Proton takes vendors on plant visit in China to accelerate development of next-gen vehicles

Proton recently joined hands with the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MECD), alongside with two government agencies to bring suppliers of government-linked companies (GLC) and Proton to attend the “Market Access, Technology Transfer & Vendor Enhancement Program” in China.

This initiative was aimed towards fostering innovation, enhance commercialisation activities and support Malaysia’s transition towards sustainable mobility.

Organised by MECD and led by the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Bhd (MIDF), the program was conducted in early July to accelerate the development of next-generation vehicles and battery electric vehicles through strategic partnerships and technological exchanges.

Representatives from MBSB Bank, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, PLUS Expressways Bhd, UEM Edgenta Bhd, Telekom Malaysia as well as 22 Malaysian vendors were brought to visit electric vehicle (EV) components plants, such as charger plants and stations, batteries and charger producers in seven places in China, including Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou.

These stops included Geely’s subsidiaries Zeekr and EV battery and charger producer VREMT at Hangzhou Bay. As a global leader in EVs, China’s comprehensive ecosystem for EV development makes this program highly significant, offering insights into manufacturing, facilities and services within the EV industry.

To facilitate interactions between Proton suppliers and Geely EV suppliers, business matchmaking sessions were held at the Geely Research Centre (GRI) at Hangzhou Bay during the programme. 95% of the participants were satisfied with the session that helps to identify potential partnerships and collaborations for EV component supply chains.

Among all participants, 87% of local suppliers expressed the intention to collaborate with China suppliers with the top five partnership by category as distributorship, collaboration in technology transfer, joint venture partner, collaboration in skill development and investment for joint business.

The government is committed to advancing the electric vehicle (EV) and green technology. Increased collaboration and partnerships aim to build essential infrastructure and support a sustainable EV ecosystem through technology transfer. By developing the local supply chain, Malaysia hopes to cut import reliance, create jobs and stimulate economic growth, according to MECD.

In a separate trip to China a month prior, Proton previewed upcoming models and design concepts to gain more insights on the development work done by the design team in meeting local and global market needs.

“This experience has provided vendors and dealers valuable insights into the global automotive market dynamics and reinforces Proton’s leadership in delivering cutting-edge vehicles tailored to diverse consumer preferences. Some of the safety technologies and luxurious interior in the model were way beyond its market segment. With strong demand for technological advanced vehicles at competitive prices, all the models are poised to make a significant impact to the market,” said Thomas Lim, President, Proton Vendors Association.

“Proton’s recent trips have demonstrated a strong commitment to product innovation and a strategic approach for introducing new models both locally and globally. This underscores the need for increased collaboration and technology exchanges to ensure the long-term resilience of the automotive sector in Malaysia and to accelerate progress towards these ambitious goals,” said Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, Proton.

Toyota Australia develops V8-powered GR Supra to race against Mustang, Camaro

Depending on the market, the Toyota GR Supra can be found with a choice of BMW engines, either a 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine (258 PS/400 Nm) or a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine producing up to 387 PS/500 Nm of power.

However, for racing purposes, Toyota will sideline the German-made heart and prioritize a V8 engine to be fitted inside the GR Supra.

The V8-powered GR Supra race machine will compete in the Supercars Championship in Australia starting in 2026, with Toyota becoming the third manufacturer to join the competition against Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

Reportedly, the V8-powered GR Supra race machine was internally developed by Toyota Australia in Altona to comply with the GEN3 Supercars Championship regulations.

The mentioned V8 engine already exists in high-performance Lexus vehicles such as the IS F, GS F, LC 500, and RC-F.

The naturally aspirated 5.0-liter aluminum heart (code 2UR-GSE) is capable of producing up to 481 PS/535 Nm of torque in the RC-F model, or 477 PS with a peak torque of 540 Nm in the LC 500 model.

Returning to the V8-powered GR Supra race machine, it will showcase the racing livery of the Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) team and will be piloted by drivers Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood.

The WAU team previously raced under the Holden brand from 1987 to 2023, before switching to the Ford brand for three seasons, and will collaborate with Toyota starting in 2026.

Don’t celebrate too early, as this V8-powered GR Supra will only exist in racing form.

The road-going GR Supra will still continue with the inline-six cylinder engine offerings until its production ceases in the coming years.

However, before that, Toyota is reported to launch the Supra GRMN model with a retuned inline-six cylinder engine, a stiffer chassis, and improved aerodynamics.

Indonesia Air Force orders 4 Airbus H145 helicopters

The Indonesian Air Force has placed an order for four Airbus H145 helicopters as part of its training modernisation programme, according to Bernama.

Details regarding charging remain unknown, but the Leapmotor global website says that the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes.

The official launch of the Leapmotor C10 is expected to take place in October. Pricing is still a hush hush, but it should be in the ballpark of its closest rivals such as the BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5.

Ford brings Stingray karaoke app to F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E

Ford owners can now kill boredom while stuck in traffic or waiting for their vehicles to charge with a new karaoke app developed in collaboration with Canadian music and media company Stingray.

Ford says the app will initially be available through a software update on the F-150 Lightning, followed by the Mustang Mach-E.

What’s particularly exciting is that the Stingray karaoke app offers a wide selection of songs from rock, country, pop, R&B, Latin, K&J Pop and family-friendly tunes. The songs are available with 38 language options, including 10 languages in local characters such as Thai, Hebrew, Russian and Greek.

Additionally, the app features a multilingual interface with 36 languages available.

This feature can be used when parked and while driving. Lyrics for the currently playing song will be displayed on the infotainment system touchscreen when the vehicle is stopped and will disappear as soon as the vehicle is moving, ensuring that the driver’s attention remains undistracted.

While the vehicle is in motion, the app will display a QR code on the screen if the vehicle detects a passenger in the front passenger seat with their seatbelt fastened.

Passengers can scan this QR code using their smartphones to access a webpage that allows them to control the karaoke app from their devices.

Through this method, passengers can add songs to their playlist, change songs, view scrolling lyrics and utilise the vehicle’s audio system.

The Stingray karaoke app will first be available for the F-150 Lightning equipped with the SYNC 4A infotainment system, followed by the Mustang Mach-E available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

Furthermore, it can also be downloaded for the Explorer and several 2025 Lincoln models, including the Navigator, Aviator, and Nautilus.

Toyota’s Advanced Rear Seat Reminder has the potential to save lives

The alarming cases of children who died after being left behind in cars have become a little too common, not only in Malaysia but also in other countries.

Recognising the seriousness of the issue, Toyota has introduced the Advanced Rear Seat Reminder system that is capable of detecting movement in the rear seats after the vehicle has been turned off and locked.

The first model to receive the new system is the 2025 Toyota Sienna, a three-row MPV available in the North American market.

While rear seat reminder systems are not new to the automotive world, Toyota’s Advanced Rear Seat Reminder is more sophisticated as it is capable of making calls to the user’s phone.

According to Toyota, the system utilises sensors concealed in the headliner and a 60GHz band millimeter-wave radar to scan the second and third row seats for potential movement.

If the system senses movement after the vehicle is shifted into park and ignition is cycled off, the driver’s door has been opened then closed and the vehicle has been locked, the initial warning will trigger the hazard lights and to flash and sound the door lock chime nine times.

If movement is still detected by the sensor and a door has not been opened approximately 90 seconds after the initial warning, the system will sound the horn as part of the escalation warning.

If the driver has opted into Advanced Rear Seat Reminder notifications via the Toyota app and has an active Safety Connect subscription, they will receive a push notification and a text message four minutes after the horn escalation warning starts.

Finally, after an additional two minutes has elapsed, the system will attempt to generate an automated phone call from Toyota Safety.

However, if the vehicle is left unlocked, the hazard lights will not activate, nor will the door alarm or horn sound. Instead, users will be notified via SMS after 10 minutes, followed by a phone call two minutes later.

Will Toyota introduce the Advanced Rear Seat Reminder system in other markets? We certainly hope so, as it has the potential to save many lives.

Proton e.MAS 7 undergoes extensive road testing

Pro-Net has revealed that the nation’s first-ever electric vehicle, the e.MAS7, is currently undergoing local road testing.

According to the company, the extensive local testing phase involves six units of the e.MAS 7, guided by expert engineers across the diverse terrains of Peninsular Malaysia.

The testing regimen includes Durability Adaptive Testing (DAT), Electrical Road Testing (ERT), Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) Road Test, and Quality Reliability Test (QRT), along with ongoing enhancements to navigation systems and Digital Head Unit (DHU) and Telematic Service Provider (TSP) services.

To date, the engineers have conducted DAT simulations that replicate Malaysia’s unique environmental factors and traffic patterns, fine-tuned the in-car navigation to accurately reflect Malaysian road maps and optimised radio frequency capture for local stations focusing on rural and mountainous routes and train stations to test internet connectivity.

The electrical system is targeted to complete a 10,000 km road test during ERT, ensuring flawless integration of all electronic functions. Meanwhile, ADAS has been rigorously tested in various scenarios, including shopping mall parking lots, road forks, and elevated roads.

Pro-Net has also localised key software components, ensuring the DHU system accurately translates the original Chinese market language into Malaysian English and adapts to local settings, rather than relying on generic translations.

This collaborative effort between Proton and Geely demonstrates that the e.MAS 7 isn’t just a rebadged vehicle but one infused with true Malaysian character.

The durability tests, including rigorous troubleshooting and system checks ensure the vehicle’s resilience under local conditions.

The company said it has requested and implemented 49 additional processes and unique features from Geely to guarantee that the e.MAS 7 meets the highest standards both locally and globally.

Toyota Prius sets world record, 2.5L/100 km for over 5,000 km trip!

A new world record for the lowest fuel consumption rate has been set in the Guinness World Record for a driving distance exceeding 5,000 km, that is 2.5L/100 km.

This is much more efficient compared to the official figure of 57 MPG (4.12 liters/100 km) released by Toyota!

Wayne Gerdes drove a Toyota Prius LE from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall, covering a distance of 5,168.7 km.

During the journey, he had to navigate routes at an elevation of 2,100 m and traverse the Mojave Desert where temperatures can reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius.

To achieve this figure, Gerdes suggested several tips that can be used to improve fuel efficiency.

These include driving slowly from stops while maintaining steady pressure on the pedal.

“For a record attempt like this, it requires meticulous planning. You need to have a plan and be able to quickly adjust that plan.

“So, if conditions change, you must alter your plan. Change your route. Think about what you can do to reach that goal,” he added.

The Toyota Prius LE has a fuel tank capacity of 43 liters, so based on a quick calculation, Gerdes may be able to achieve a distance of 1,693 km with each full tank refill.

It is indeed an impressive figure, considering Toyota’s official figure is only about 1,036 km.
