M Performance Parts make the BMW M5 Touring look devilishly good

The new BMW M5 Touring, which was introduced to the world last August, is among the heaviest cars on the market right now, weighing in at approximately 2,508 kg.

In response, BMW has unveiled a range of M Performance Parts accessories, featuring various components made from carbon fibre and high-tech fibre composite material called aramid.

While the exact weight reduction is undisclosed, the kit does enhance the M5 Touring’s aggressive overall look, complementing its supercar-like performance.

It begins at the front, where the M5 Touring receives a carbon fibre splitter that accentuates the central air intake in the bumper.

At the rear, there’s a carbon fibre diffuser that’s divided into two sections, which can be paired with M Performance tailpipe trims for an even more striking visual impact.

Additionally, the M Performance Parts kit includes side decals in Frozen Black and carbon fibre sill extensions, giving the wagon an even wider stance.

For a more menacing look, customers can also opt for M exterior mirror caps in carbon fibre and the aramid M Performance aerial cover.

Other offerings include a carbon fibre fuel cap that “ turns every refuel into a small pit stop,” M Performance floor mats with leather-look edging, an Alcantara and leather key fob cover, and M Performance tyre bags that can be used for protection and storage.

Unfortunately, these M Performance Parts do not equate to increased performance. But it’s probably the last thing it needs as the M5 Touring is already a very potent car thanks to its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine that generates 717 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W214) now in Malaysia – two CKD variants, priced from RM356k

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has officially launched the 10th generation E-Class sedan (W214) for the local market.

The luxury executive sedan is offered in two locally assembled variants: the E200 Avantgarde Line and the E350e AMG Line. Pricing starts from RM355,888 for the former and RM418,888 for the latter.

The E200 features a mild hybrid power that combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 204 hp and 320 Nm with an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) providing an additional 17 kW and 205 Nm.

As a result, it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and achieving a top speed of 240 km/h.

In contrast, the E350e is driven by a plug-in hybrid setup that produces a healthy total system output of 313 hp and 500 Nm of torque.

According to Mercedes-Benz, this variant can travel up to 118 km and reach a top speed of 140 km/h using electric power supplied by a high-voltage battery with a capacity of 25.4 kWh.

Notably, in addition to the 11 kW AC charger, the E350e also supports fast charging up to 55 kW, which enables the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.

In addition to powertrains, the E200 and E350e also differ quite significantly in appearance and features. As a range topper, the E350e adds a bit of aggressiveness to its look via an AMG Line body kit and 20-inch AMG alloy wheels.

The variant also comes with Digital Light headlights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and a panoramic sunroof.

Inside, the E350e is equipped with the MBUX Superscreen, which is made up of a 12.3-inch driver display, a 14.4-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display.

The MBUX infotainment system now includes an App Store, allowing users to download various apps such as TikTok, Angry Birds, Zoom, and Webex, to name a few.

For video conferencing apps like Zoom and Webex, users can make calls or record videos using the selfie camera located on the dashboard.

Additionally, music streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music are now integrated into the MBUX system.

Both variants feature ambient lighting (Active Ambient Lighting in the E350e) that spruces up the front section of the instrument panel as well as the doors.

Furthermore, the E-Class now offers a digital vehicle key function, enabling users to unlock or start the engine using their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Completing the package, the E350e comes standard with a Burmester 4D sound system featuring 21 speakers, including two sound resonating transducers in the backrest of each front seat for acoustic massage.

2024 Mitsubishi Xpander facelift, open for booking, RM115k

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has announced the opening of bookings for the seven-seater MPV model Mitsubishi Xpander 2024 facelift.

According to the CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, Shinya Ikeda said, “Xpander has not only gained popularity in Malaysia, but it is also popular in the ASEAN region.

“MMM introduced the Xpander to the Malaysian market in 2020, and last month we celebrated 40,000 Xpander owners on the road. As the number one non-national MPV model, the Xpander is now one of the most important models for Mitsubishi Motors,” he added.

The facelift version brings cosmetic changes, where the 2024 Xpander now features more modern and aggressive lighting units, body kits along with a rear spoiler that cater to an active lifestyle taste.

The Xpander also offers a ground clearance of 225 mm, the best in its class, and a cargo space of 837 liters when the second-row seats are folded flat.

BYD Xia breaks cover, a cheaper alternative to Denza D9?

In addition to the Denza D9 and M6, BYD now has another offering that looks capable of shaking things up in the MPV segment.

Known as the BYD Xia, it comes as the flagship model in the automaker’s Dynasty series. It is reportedly named after the oldest dynasty in Chinese history, which began ruling in 2070 BC.

Measuring 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,805 mm in height, the Xia is 105 mm shorter, 10 mm wider, and 115 mm lower than the D9. Its wheelbase is 3,045 mm, which is 65 mm shorter than that of the D9.

Without the influence of Mercedes-Benz as seen on the D9, the exterior design of the Xia is evidently not as opulent. This makes sense, as BYD targets the mass market, while Denza is BYD’s very own sub-brand specialising in luxury vehicles.

Nevertheless, the Xia is still visually appealing thanks to the trademark ‘Dragon Face’ design element and a large grille at the front, along with a vertical tail light that runs across the back.

The interior has yet to be revealed, but according to CarNewsChina, the Xia will offer seven seats in a 2+2+3 configuration, alongside features such as a large touchscreen and a flat-bottom steering wheel.

The Xia is equipped with a fifth-generation DM-i plug-in hybrid powertrain, which reportedly combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with 200 hp and an electric motor with 268 hp.

The powertrain is said to offer an electric driving range of up to 200 km, suggesting it may be equipped with a high-capacity Blade battery.

Additionally, the Xia utilises an adjustable suspension system with an electromagnetic DiSus-C system, similar to that used in the Tang and Han models. Other bells and whistles include the DiPilot ADAS and the DiLink 150 cockpit system.

The Xia is set to enter the Chinese market this year, with a starting price of 300,000 yuan (RM182,756). This makes it more affordable than the D9, which is priced between 339,800 yuan and 469,800 yuan (RM207,010–RM286,210).

Volvo Iron Women supports representation of women heavy-duty truckers

In support of developing skilled heavy-duty truck drivers, Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Volvo Trucks), has introduced its Volvo Iron Women initiative to Malaysia.

With the support of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry as strategic partner, Volvo Trucks recently celebrated the inaugural graduation of five women as fully certified heavy-duty truck drivers.

“Volvo Iron Women has enjoyed much success globally and we are very excited to see the opportunities it will unlock with Malaysia as a pioneer of the programme in the Southeast Asia region,” said Volvo Trucks International, Vice President, Johan Selvén.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Hajah Nancy Shukri, who graced the graduation ceremony, said in her address, “KPWKM’s collaboration with Volvo Trucks through the Iron Women initiative is a shining example of an impactful public-private partnership. I believe we are moving the needle steadily in addressing gender disparities in the workforce.”

Nancy also acknowledged Taipanco Sdn Bhd, who will be employing the first cohort of graduates, for being among the few industry players to recognise the value of women heavy-duty truck drivers as valuable assets to their fleet.

The Ministry stated that it would lend its support to equip the Iron Women graduates with the knowledge and skills to navigate a male-dominated industry, especially with an awareness to recognise and address any form of gender bias harassment with confidence.

This includes endorsing the Volvo Iron Women programme for counselling and training for gender bias harassment, and provision of a hotline for women drivers in need of counselling or advise should the need arise.

The Ministry also stated it would assist in identifying and recommending viable candidates as participants. By integrating a support system for the women, the Ministry hopes to create a seamless and sustainable transition of more women into new economic sectors, especially one traditionally dominated by men.

“Being in the logistics industry for over two decades, we see great potential in the empowerment and participation of women to address the industry’s growing demand for skilled truck drivers,” said Taipanco Sdn Bhd, Executive Director, Dato’ Nazari Akhbar.

The Volvo Iron Women programme is designed to empower candidates from end to end, beginning with the undertaking of lessons and examinations through an authorised driving institution to obtain a Class E license to drive heavy vehicles.

Following a full health evaluation, candidates then progress to the next stage of obtaining a Goods Driving License (GDL) by attending a seven-hour lecture and theory examination, of which all costs will be borne by the employing company. The GDL is divided into three categories, namely light vehicles, heavy vehicles and jointed vehicles. The Volvo Iron Women programme in Malaysia is focused on jointed vehicles.

Foxconn, Sharp join forces to develop the LDK+ concept, an EV minivan that can be converted into a mobile home

Japanese electronics giant Sharp has teamed up with Foxconn to develop a new concept EV called the Sharp LDK+.

Inspired by the design of commercial van cab-overs, the Sharp LDK+ is described as a compact mobile home packed with various cutting-edge technologies.

Its silver exterior and boxy shape could easily be mistaken for high-tech home hardware, further emphasized by the presence of the Sharp brand logo at the front.

The Sharp LDK+ features sliding side doors with rather large openings, revealing a cabin space that can be customized according to the user’s needs.

There are rear seats that can swivel 180 degrees, transforming the space into a more comfortable lounge area.

The side windows also come equipped with liquid crystal curtain technology for privacy, along with an AI system that can control lighting and temperature based on user preferences.

A massive 65-inch display screen is installed on the rear tailgate door, which can be used for watching movies or holding video calls with loved ones.

The same space can also be transformed into a children’s play area or a personal office for off-hours work.

The Sharp LDK+ utilizes an EV platform built by Foxconn, with a battery pack of unspecified capacity that can serve as a backup power source for home use during emergencies.

To facilitate off-grid activities, the van also supports charging using solar panels installed on the roof.

The LDK+ concept van will be officially unveiled at the Sharp Tech-Day 24 exhibition taking place in Tokyo on September 17-18.

Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono launched in Malaysia, from RM71k

Ducati Malaysia has expanded its lineup in the country with the launch of the new Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono.

The motorcycle is available in two variants – the base Hypermotard 698 Mono, priced at RM70,900, and the range-topping 698 Mono RVE variant, available from RM77,900.

Both variants are powered by a Superquadro Mono 659 cc single-cylinder engine, which is derived from the 1,285 cc Superquadro engine used in the 1299 Panigale.

Equipped with a desmodromic system, the engine generates a total power output of 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm and 64 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm.

If that’s not potent enough, fitting the available Termignoni racing exhaust will bump up the power to 84.5 hp.

The suspension system is made up of a fully adjustable Marzocchi upside-down fork and a rear double-sided swingarm mated with a Sachs rear shock with progressive linkage.

The Hypermotard 698 Mono rolls 17-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres measuring 120/70 at the front and 160/60 at the rear.

Braking power is provided by a 330 mm single disc and a Brembo M4.32 caliper at the front, as well as a 245 mm single disc with a single-piston caliper at the rear.

On the electronics front, the Hypermotard 698 Mono incorporates a plethora of technologies from the Panigale superbike series, which Cornering ABS with Slide-by-Brake, Ducati Wheelie Control, Ducati Traction Control, Engine Brake Control, and four Riding Modes.

The RVE variant sets itself apart from the base model through unique graphics and the addition of Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), which is offered as an option on the latter.

Toyota GR Starlet to be launched in 2026 as an affordable and practical FWD hot hatch

The news about the revival of the Starlet model has long been circulating online.

According to the Japanese publisher Best Car Web, Toyota is planning to reintroduce the Starlet model as a replacement for the discontinued Toyota Passo.

Not only that, the Gazoo Racing racing division also plans to produce a turbocharged hot hatch GR Starlet (unofficial name) that will serve as the basis for the WRC Rally 4 racing vehicle.

The new Starlet model may use the same TNGA-B platform as the Yaris, but with smaller dimensions.

Best Car Web estimates the dimensions of the Starlet to be 3,850 mm in length, 1,725 mm in width, 1,475 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,450 mm.

For comparison, the Toyota Yaris (TNGA platform) measures 3,940 mm in length, 1,745 mm in width, 1,500 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,560 mm.

Unlike the GR Yaris, which uses the G16E-GTS 1.6-liter turbo engine, the GR Starlet may use a more simplified powertrain.

According to sources, the new hot hatch will be equipped with a 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-three engine based on the earlier 1.6-liter turbo engine, producing about 150 hp, front-wheel drive system, and a six-speed manual transmission.

Due to the absence of the all-wheel-drive GR-Four system, it also contributes to a lighter weight, approximately 980 kg, or 300 kg lighter than the GR Yaris.

Additionally, the actual production model of the Starlet is expected to appear in 2026, while the rally car Starlet will showcase its prowess in the 2027 racing season.

Toyota lowers global EV production target by 30 percent for 2026

Like other manufacturers, Toyota has also been affected by the decline in demand for electric vehicles.

According to the latest report from the Japanese newspaper The Mainichi, Toyota has reduced its global production target for electric vehicles by 30 percent by the year 2026.

The company is now aiming to produce around 1 million units, compared to the original plan of 1.5 million EV units.

Toyota, previously characterized as a ‘stubborn’ manufacturer, changed their electrification strategy early last year when their president Koji Sato announced a sales target of 1.5 million EV units by 2026.

The global EV market initially experienced rapid growth, thanks to the popular models produced by Tesla and BYD.

However, sales in the zero-emission segment have been slow as they have failed to attract interest from other consumer groups beyond early adopters due to high costs and charging infrastructure issues.

Throughout 2023, Toyota managed to sell 104,000 EV units, a fourfold increase compared to the previous year.

This figure is significantly small when compared to the total vehicle sales exceeding 10 million units.

In comparison to EVs, Toyota’s hybrid vehicles have been well-received as they offer a more practical solution in driving carbon neutrality missions.

Despite the plans to decrease EV production, Toyota will respond to current market demand by increasing production numbers for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Super GT Race returns to shake up Sepang Circuit in 2025

Perhaps not many are aware, but Malaysia was once the official location for the Super GT race, starting from 2000 and ending in 2013.

After 11 years of silence, the Super GT race is set to return and shake up the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit for three seasons, from 2025 to 2027.

In relation to this, a signing ceremony for the agreement took place this afternoon between HARO Sports & Entertainment as the rights holder and promoter for the Malaysian leg of Super GT and GT Association (GTA) as the rights holder for Super GT.

The agreement was signed by Fahrizal Hasan (HARO Sports & Entertainment) and Masaaki Bandoh (President & CEO of GTA), and witnessed by YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.

Also present at the signing event were Azhan Shafriman Hanif, CEO of the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit, and S. N. Nanthan, Secretary General of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM).

Malaysia remains the only location outside of Japan for the 2025 racing season, after the last Super GT race outside Japan was held in Thailand in 2019.

Here are the locations for the Autobacs Super GT 2025 races:

Opening Round (April 12-13) – Okayama International Circuit
Second Round (May 3-4) – Fuji Speedway
Third Round (June 27-28) – PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit
Fourth Round (August 2-3) – Fuji Speedway
Fifth Round (August 23-24) – Suzuka Circuit
Sixth Round (September 20-21) – Sportsland Sugo
Seventh Round (October 18-19) – Autopolis International Racing Course
Eighth Round (November 1-2) – Mobility Resort Motegi

Super GT consists of two main classes, namely GT500 featuring manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, while the GT300 class comprises Subaru and Lexus participants.

This prestigious race was supposed to make a comeback in 2020, but it had to be canceled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Interestingly, the Super GT teams and drivers describe the Malaysian rounds as a unique and quite challenging experience in track racing due to the extreme heat and unpredictable heavy rains, unlike the usual conditions experienced in Japan.

Super GT 2025 will bring various attractions for its fans, such as Race Ambassadors, open pit sessions, pit walks, grid walks, and the Circuit Safari, where fans have the opportunity to experience the action on the track up close.

Proton commences CKD assembly of Saga in Egypt, to generate up to RM570mil in revenue

Proton took another step towards expanding its footprint in international markets by announcing the start of CKD operations in Egypt.

The announcement was made during an event at Proton’s Centre Of Excellence headquarters, which was highlighted by a flag off ceremony to send 120 units of left hand drive (LHD) Proton Saga CKD packs to the country.

Proton’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah said the addition of CKD operations in Egypt brings the number of plants involved in CKD and SKD activities for Proton outside of Malaysia to five.

“As the Malaysian automotive market reaches a natural saturation point, future volume growth potential will come from overseas markets where consumer demand is expected to be on an upward trend in the future,” he added.

The Proton brand has been present in the Egyptian automotive market with its partner, Ezz Elarab since 2004. Overall, nearly 17,000 CBU units have been exported to the country in that time and in 2024, it is forecast that
over 1,400 units will be shipped there.

With the local assembly targeted to start in December this year at an assembly plant owned by Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF), the targeted volume for 2025 is expected to grow to 5,000 units of the Proton Saga.

“Locally assembling the Proton Saga in Egypt, allows the company to meet the aim of the Egyptian government
to limit the number of CBU imports into the country while also encouraging local assembly activities.

“This in turn creates the potential for greater future capacity expansion in the country, especially after we launch new models, with the aim to make Egypt the hub for Proton vehicle exports in the North African region,” said Steven Xu, Director of International Sales, Proton.

For the first three years up to the end of 2026, revenue earned by Proton from the export of CKD packs to Egypt is forecast to be RM570 million with a further RM20 million projected as revenue from parts export activities.

At the same time, the local Egyptian economy is expected to earn up to RM180 million in duties and taxes on the assembly of Proton vehicles in the country.

JPJ introduces the “EV” registration series, special plate design for electric vehicles

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) today introduced the JPJePlate special plate design specifically for zero-emission vehicles (ZEV).

According to JPJ, three standards have been set for the special plate design inspired by European countries, such as:

1. Retro-reflective feature to enhance visibility at night and reduce accident rates.

2. Anti-cloning hologram sticker to minimize theft and fraud risks.

3. Integrated RFID technology that supports toll payments and vehicle parking.

The implementation of JPJePlate starts today (September 9, 2024) for new electric vehicles, with bookings available through the website jpjeplate.jpj.gov.my.

The new plate design is not mandatory for registered ZEVs, but owners can still make reservations as early as November.

A complete set of JPJePlate is priced at RM98/set, including front and rear plates, RFID mirror stickers, and standard delivery costs.

Additionally, JPJ has also launched a special registration number auction (NPI) with the “EV” index through the JPJeBid System starting today and ending on September 13, 2024, at 10:00 PM.

The “EV” registration number is reserved exclusively for ZEVs and cannot be registered on non-ZEV vehicles.

Similar to previous initiatives, a portion of the revenue from these NPIs will be channeled towards public initiatives such as free helmet exchange programs and B2 license training for the B40 group.

Volvo XC90 facelift officially revealed, boasts range of over 800 km

The last time the Volvo XC90 was given an update was back in 2019. Now, five years later, the flagship SUV has received another round of makeover that sees it adapting design elements from the Swedish marque’s electric offering.

As you can see, the XC90 sports a new grille and LED headlights with sharper ‘Thor’s hammer’ DRL signatures. The front bumper also gets a fresh look with vertical air vents and wider lower air intake.

The shape of the taillights remains unchanged, but they now appear more modern thanks to a new lighting pattern.

For the interior, Volvo has made it even more practical in response to feedback from current XC90 owners. The center console now has additional storage space and cup holders, while the wireless charger is placed behind the central tunnel for better convenience.

On top of that, the XC90 gets a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen with a sharper and brighter display with 21% higher pixel density.

There’s also the the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system which Volvo claims can “faithfully replicate the  acoustics of a stage, a concert hall or a jazz club.”

The XC90 will continue to be offered in the range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid variant. It combines a petrol engine and an electric motor that offers a range of over 800 km.

Volvo also offers B5 and B6 petrol mild hybrid variants, both assisted by a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator which can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15% in real-world driving.

The automaker has revised the suspension system so that each individual damper can adapt mechanically to current road conditions to optimise both comfort and stability.

Alternatively, customers can tick the box for the available air suspension system that works with an active chassis system to monitor the car, road and driver 500 times per second to give the most comfortable ride possible.

The air suspension system can lower itself by 20 mm or raise itself by 40 mm, making it easier for passengers to get in and out, improving aerodynamics, and increasing ground clearance for off-road driving.

Finally, Volvo has added extra insulation to certain parts of the car for less wind and road noise.
