Why ASEAN NCAP’s score is important for choosing a safe family car?

In school, exam scores in any examination are indicative of a student’s performance.

Similarly, the score obtained through the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) is crucial.

In the ASEAN NCAP, a modern car is evaluated through four main scopes, namely Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Safety Assist (SA), and Motorcycle Safety (MS).

This means that, in addition to evaluating the vehicle’s chassis safety aspects, the ASEAN NCAP also assesses the effectiveness of advanced safety assistance systems that are incorporated.

Higher scores indicate a more comprehensive level of safety offered by a manufacturer.

The scores issued by the ASEAN NCAP can serve as a guide for consumers to determine the value-for-money vehicle models.

Furthermore, nowadays buyers are increasingly conscious of considering the purchase of safer cars.

Did you know that one of the five-star ASEAN NCAP rated cars that is highly recommended for ownership is the Chery Omoda 5?

Since its launch in July 2023, the Omoda 5 has been the best-selling Chery model in the Malaysian market.

With a complete specifications package and affordable price (starting from RM108,800), the Chery Omoda 5 also offers a comprehensive list of safety features as standard for all variants.

Passive safety features such as ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control (TC), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and not forgetting the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) are included.

What’s more, both variants are equipped with Level 2 ADAS system, comprising the following functions such as Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow (LSF), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LDP), and Traffic Jam Assist (TJA).

With the advanced safety features mentioned earlier, it’s no surprise that this popular SUV has successfully achieved a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating as recently announced.

Not only that, the Chery Omoda 5 also achieved the highest score in its segment, accumulating 88.64 points, covering the four assessment scopes:
• Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) – 36.77/40.00
• Child Occupant Protection (COP) – 17.36/20.00
• Safety Assist (SA) – 19.51/20.00
• Motorcycle Safety (MS) – 15.00/20.00.

The Chery Omoda 5 has shown outstanding performance in front and side impact tests to ensure the safety of adult and child occupants.

The advanced safety features in this SUV have also been proven to ensure the safety of other road users.

In addition to the ASEAN NCAP, the Chery Omoda 5 has also received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP and Australia NCAP. This demonstrates Chery’s commitment to producing a safer, reliable, and affordable vehicle for daily use.

Ford registers patent for driver protection system from accidentally becoming drug mules

One of the major concerns while using rental cars or renting out cars to third parties is the risk of them being used for drug trafficking by irresponsible individuals.

With current advancements, Ford aims to leverage advanced technology loaded in modern vehicles to ensure that you are not the next unwitting participant.

The patent for this system of detecting unknown items has been filed by Ford in March 2023, and was publicly released on September 19th.

According to Ford, this system will utilize various sensor units and cameras to detect suspicious activities, check the vehicle’s weight, and scan for any unrecognized GPS radio frequencies.

The system will then activate the camera to record any suspicious movements and store it as evidence.

Additionally, the system will also track any changes in driving patterns and behaviors resulting from the addition of unknown weight loads.

It is just a patent for now, but it is not implausible that one day this system will be realized to combat the issue of drug trafficking.

F1 teams excited to return to Sepang Circuit – MAM President

The last time the Sepang International Circuit hosted the prestigious sport of Formula One was in 2017 since its introduction to the country in 1999.

Despite not being revved up by the roar of F1 engines for quite some time, the circuit still remains a favorite among some drivers, besides being a common mention on social media every time the name Sepang International Circuit is brought up.

Berita Harian reported that the President of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM), Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, revealed that the sport could be reintroduced at the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit, but emphasized that something fresher needs to be introduced.

Among the changes that could be made is to host races at night.

He also revealed that several F1 teams currently competing are excited at the prospect of the race being brought back to the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit.

“Perhaps if we have the opportunity to be organizers once again, we need to make a difference. F1 is no longer just about watching 20 cars race on the track, it is more than that now.

“We need complementary events to enhance the Grand Prix races both on the track and in the capital during race week. Conferences and concerts have now become part of the F1 race week.

“We could also organize races at night using lighting and it would be cooler. Bahrain has already done this from day races to night races and it proves that it is not impossible to do.”

However, Mokhzani emphasized that reorganizing F1 in Malaysia is not an easy task as it requires very high costs.

Singapore ex-transport minister pleads guilty to bribery charges

Former Singaporean Transport Minister S Iswaran has pleaded guilty to charges of receiving gifts while in government office, according to Reuters.

Iswaran is the first Singapore cabinet minister to be prosecuted in court after the last corruption case reported in 1986 could not be tried in court due to the death of the country’s minister of state.

The 62-year-old former minister, who was arrested in July last year, was accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of Singapore dollars in bribes from real estate tycoon Ong Beng Seng, some of which were to advance Ong’s business interests.

According to the charge sheet, Iswaran was alleged to have received gifts in the form of tickets to English Premier League football matches, musicals, flights on Ong’s private plane, and tickets to the Singapore Formula One GP.

According to Channel News Asia (CNA), he pleaded guilty to charges of obstructing justice and receiving gifts of value without payment or inadequate payment from someone involved with him in an official capacity.

Meanwhile, the prosecution has reduced Iswaran’s charges to five out of 35, while the remaining 30 charges will be taken into account for sentencing.

For the charge of receiving gifts, a person can be sentenced to up to two years in prison and fined, while for the offense of obstructing justice, Iswaran could face up to seven years in prison and fines.

More incentives from government to encourage people to buy EVs – Kenanga Research

Kenanga Research predicts that the government will provide more incentives to boost the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) among the people of Malaysia, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.

The research firm said that this aligns with the national target for EVs and hybrid vehicles to constitute 15 percent of the total industry sales (TIV) by the year 2030, and further, to reach 38 percent by 2040.

“The current vehicle sales are supported by new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) enjoying sales and service tax (SST) exemptions and EV facility incentives until 2025 for completely built-up (CBU) and until 2027 for completely knocked down (CKD) units.

“New registrations for BEVs surged from 274 units in 2021 to over 3,400 units in 2022, 10,159 units in 2023, and 6,617 units in the first half of 2024 (according to the quarterly report),” the research notes stated.

According to Kenanga Research, the targeted reduction in petrol fuel subsidies expected to be implemented by the government may also increase the interest of the M40 group in EVs.

“The M40 group may refrain from buying new cars, or they may choose to switch to smaller vehicles or switch to EVs to reduce their fuel bills after the rationalization of fuel subsidies,” it said.

Meanwhile, the research firm mentioned that the Malaysian government will also expedite the approval of charging stations across the country.

“The current operating number of charging stations stands at 3,951, and it is expected to nearly triple to 10,000 by the end of this year,” it said.

The research firm also maintained its forecast for new vehicle sales in Malaysia for 2024, also known as TIV, at 740,000 units (eight percent lower), which is slightly more conservative compared to the forecast of 765,000 units by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Overall, the firm said, the income visibility level of the industry remains good, supported by a balance of orders totaling 170,000 units at the end of July 2024, unchanged from the previous month.

“More than half of this balance consists of new models, indicating the attraction of new models to car buyers,” it concluded, emphasizing that the rationalization of petrol subsidies and the implementation of e-invoices could put pressure on vehicle sales in the second quarter of 2024.

Geely wants to establish assembly plant in Europe

Chinese automotive company Geely is currently scouting suitable locations to establish a large-scale production facility on the European continent.

However according to Reuters sources, Geely Auto Group’s Vice President Li Chuanhai confirmed that the plans were “not 100 percent” certain while speaking in Frankfurt, Germany last week.

Geely had previously held discussions with the Polish government, but the authorities in the country did not see Geely as an ideal investment partner.

In Frankfurt, Geely has opened a new facility where it will serve as the location for testing and developing 13 new models of electric vehicles to meet stricter European standards.

In addition to Geely, several Chinese automotive manufacturers, including Chery and GWM, are also planning to establish assembly plants in Europe to avoid higher tariffs imposed on imported EVs from the mainland.

Nissan plans to sell GT-R R35 for another 17 years

Do you know that the Nissan GT-R R35 generation is now 17 years old?

Compared to others, the Nissan GT-R is quite aged, but Nissan actually still intends to continue producing the R35 for another 17 years.

In an interview with Top Gear, Nissan’s Global Product Chief, Pierre Loing, stated, “(The Nissan GT-R) has been on sale for 17 years, and we want to continue it for another 17 years, but regulatory compliance is causing issues.”

For the past few years, Nissan has faced challenges in continuing the sales of the GT-R model.

In Europe, the supercar model’s sales were discontinued in July 2021 due to new noise regulations imposed.

It was also pulled from the Australian market due to failure to comply with stricter side-impact crash test regulations.

Normally, a manufacturer would provide a replacement model when production of the current model is discontinued.

However, this isn’t the case for the GT-R.

After ending the R35 GT-R production in 2025, there will be a gap for a long period before the successor model (Hyper Force) emerges in 2030.

“If you look at the history of the GT-R badge, we’ve had gaps before. We showed the GT-R concept in 2001, ended R34 Skyline GT-R production in 2002, then the R35 didn’t launch until 2007.”

“The gap between the ‘Kenmeri’ Skyline GT-R ending in 1975 and the R32 starting in 1989 was even larger.”

“The GT-R is strong enough to live with these gaps in its production. And we need to have a gap, because going into the electrified world, there is a lot of debate about ‘what is a GT-R in an era of electrification?’ We don’t have all the answers yet. We are in the middle of all those debates.”

It’s highly likely that when the new generation Nissan GT-R emerges in the coming years, it will be positioned as a higher-end model compared to the Z and upcoming Silvia.
