Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has recently officially launched the 2024 Yamaha MT-09, which is visibly more aggressive design-wise and features various technological upgrades.
In this article, we outline nine things you need to know about this motorcycle:
Engine
The Crossplane 3 engine is carried over from the previous version without any changes. The 890 cc, DOHC three-cylinder engine still generates 119 PS at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm at 7,000 rpm, and is paired with a six-speed transmission.
Chassis
The MT-09’s subframe has been redesigned to provide more space for electronics-related parts, resulting in a shorter tail overhang.
Additionally, the suspension now features a higher spring rate and updated damping characteristics for improved performance across various road conditions.
Slimmer fuel tank design
The MT-09’s fuel tank has been redesigned to make it slimmer, offering a more engaged forward-leaning riding position. Yamaha also claims that the seat, which has a height of 825 mm, is now more comfortable.
Adjustable handlebars and footpegs
The MT-09 features customisable handlebars and footpegs to two positions according to the rider’s
height and preference.
Acoustic grille
The Yamaha Crossplane 3 engine used in the MT-09 produces a deep roar. The exhilarating soundtrack is directed precisely to the rider’s ears through an acoustic amplifier grilles with perforated openings on the airbox cover.
Yamaha Ride Control (YRC)
The YRC feature allows riders to select engine power characteristics and degree of electronic rider aid intervention based either on their personal preference or on road conditions. There are three preset modes available: Sport, Street, and Rain, in addition to two custom modes.
Brembo brake master cylinder
The MT-09 is equipped with Brembo master cylinders, which provide linear braking power to the four-piston calipers gripping dual 298 mm discs at the front.
At the rear, the bike is fitted with a single 245 mm disc.
5-inch TFT display with Y-Connect and Garmin StreetCross
This display offers four different themes and can be connected to a smartphone via the Y-Connect app. For navigation and real-time traffic information, buyers can install the Garmin StreetCross app for free.
Moreover, there’s also a new intuitive control switch is designed to handle a wide range of functions, including smartphone connectivity, navigation and cruise control.
Price and colours
The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 is priced at RM57,998 and is available through Yamaha Big Bike dealers in two colours: Midnight Cyan and Tech Black.
WTCA Automotif, a subsidiary of Warisan TC Holdings, has launched the 2024 GAC GS3 Emzoom lineup, which now includes two new locally assembled (CKD) variants.
The range topper, the GS3 Emzoom Premium R, is produced at the company’s assembly plant in Segambut and is now sold alongside the Standard and Exclusive variants, also assembled at the same facility.
All three variants are powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, generating 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm from 1,400 to 4,500 rpm. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in eight seconds.
This performance is complemented by a fuel efficiency rating of 5.9 litres per 100 km, allowing the GS3 Emzoom to be recognised as an Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV).
Regardless of the chosen variant, the GS3 Emzoom comes equipped with LED headlights, hidden electric door handles, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Premium R variant sports a more dynamic appearance featuring an R-Style body kit and R-Style exhaust.
The Standard variant is available in Frost White and Asphalt Black, while the Exclusive variant comes in Salt Lake Blue and Superstar Silver. These colours are also offered for the Premium R variant, alongside the exclusive Graphite Grey.
Notably, Asphalt Black and Graphite Grey are exclusive to the GS3 Emzoom CKD and are not available in any other markets outside Malaysia.
Inside, a blue-black color scheme is featured across all three variants. Standard amenities include a crystal electronic gear shift, multifunction steering wheel with four-way tilt and telescopic adjustment, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, electronic parking brake, and Blind Spot Vision (BSV).
Exclusive for the Premium R are automatic headlights, High Beam Assist, Fusion Automatic Parking, six-way adjustable driver’s seat, ambient lighting system, wireless charging, hands-free tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof.
The pricing (OTR excluding insurance) for the GAC GS3 Emzoom CKD starts at RM103,800 for the Standard variant, RM116,800 for the Exclusive, and RM126,800 for the Premium R.
It comes with a warranty of five years or 150,000 km. However, the first 2,000 customers will enjoy additional coverage with a seven-year or 180,000 km warranty for the engine and transmission.
I personally like the 2025 Proton X70, which was launched to the market back in August. It is more than just a mere facelift; the changes introduced are extensive, covering both the exterior and interior.
Firstly, the C-segment SUV now features a more appealing front design compared to its predecessor. Secondly, a recent media test drive in Kota Kinabalu demonstrated that it is a notably comfortable SUV. Not the best in the market but it’s certainly up there.
The suspension feels slightly firmer than that of the original CBU version but it soaks up bumpy roads and uneven surfaces en route to Kundasang really well.
Moreover, the low-speed rumble of the three-cylinder engine is less pronounced than before and the noise from the many trucks and lorries on the roads around KK and Kundasang is also well suppressed.
However, there are still a few aspects of the car that I did not favour:
Identical rear design
As mentioned, the 2025 X70 boasts a more attractive front end carried over from the Geely Boyue facelift released two years ago. One might argue that it is already outdated but in the eyes of this writer, the front fascia still looks fresh.
Unfortunately, the rear of this SUV appears untouched. While Proton has added horizontal reflectors (which were previously vertical) and fake air vents to make it appear wider, the tailgate and lights remain unchanged, quite possibly due to constraints from Geely.
That being so, whenever you see the new X70 on the road, you are likely to mistake it for the old version.
Odd gear shift pattern
In addition to the Stone Grey Nappa leather upholstery and ambient lighting system, another new feature in the 2025 X70 cabin is the gear lever.
The design remains the same; however, in this facelift model, the ‘P’ button has been repositioned. This is not an issue though and, in my opinion, makes it even easier to use.
What is rather peculiar, however, is the new shift pattern for the manual mode. Typically, you would pull the gear shift down to upshift and push it up to downshift.
In the X70 facelift, the ‘-’ and ‘+’ symbols are positioned to the left and right, meaning you must push the gear lever left to downshift and right to upshift in manual mode.
There’s a new Auto Open function for the tailgate but…
To enhance user convenience, Proton has added an Auto Open feature to the tailgate. This means you no longer need to press a button or kick your foot under the bumper to open it.
All you need to do is stand near the tailgate (with the key in your pocket, of course), and it will open automatically. This feature is indeed very practical, especially when your hands are full.
However, in my opinion, it could be improved further, as the tailgate takes a noticeably long time—over five seconds—to open.
In addition to the luxurious MPV 009, Zeekr Malaysia is also set to launch an electric crossover known as the X to heat up the competition in the local EV market.
For your information, the X actually has ‘siblings’ that have already been launched in Malaysia, specifically the smart #1 and #3, along with the Volvo EX30.
What is the connection between the X and these three models? Interestingly, despite their very different designs, all of them share the same ‘skeleton’ that is the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform developed by Geely.
This is not surprising, as smart, Volvo, and Zeekr all operate under the Geely umbrella and platform sharing is arguably the easiest way to reduce costs.
In this article, we will compare the four models to help you choose the one that best fits your budget and needs:
Dimensions
Although they utilise the same platform, all four EVs have slightly different dimensions. The smart #1 is the smallest, measuring 4,270 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, and 1,636 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.
The #3 is slightly larger, with a length of 4,400 mm, width of 1,844 mm, height of 1,556 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.
The EX30, Volvo’s smallest car to date, measures 4,223 mm in length, 1,837 mm in width, 1,555 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,650 mm.
Meanwhile, the X stands out as the longest model, measuring 4,450 mm in length, 1,836 mm in width, and 1,572 mm in height. However, its wheelbase is identical to that of the #1, also at 2,750 mm.
Powertrain
For this category, we will compare the twin electric motor variants. Interestingly, all four have the same power output of 422 hp (315 kW) and 543 Nm of torque.
However, looking at the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h, the EX30 Ultra Twin Performance is the fastest at 3.6 seconds. The #3 Brabus follows closely at 3.7 seconds, with the X at 3.8 seconds, and finally, the #1 at 3.9 seconds.
The maximum speed for all four models is capped at 180 km/h.
Battery and Range
In terms of battery, the #1 Pro and #3 Pro come equipped with LFP 49 kWh batteries, offering ranges between 315 km and 325 km. The Premium variants of both models use nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) 66 kWh batteries, with ranges from 440 km to 455 km.
The highest variant, Brabus, uses the same battery but with a shorter range of 400 km for the #1 and 415 km for the #3.
The EX30 features a 69 kWh NMC battery, providing a range of 476 km for the single motor variants (Plus and Ultra) and 450 km for the Ultra Twin Performance variant with twin motors.
Meanwhile, the X is equipped with a 66 kWh NMC battery, promising a range of 440 km based on the WLTP cycle.
Price
This may be the most crucial aspect when comparing these four electric crossovers.
Starting with the #1, the Pro variant is priced at RM169,000, the Premium at RM209,000, and the Brabus at RM249,000.
The #3 Pro retails for RM175,000, the Premium for RM215,000, and the Brabus at RM255,000.
For the EX30, the base variant (Plus) is priced at RM188,888, the Ultra at RM208,888, and the Ultra Twin Performance at RM228,888.
As of the time of writing, the official price for the Zeekr X has yet to be announced. However, according to the company, it is expected to be priced below RM180,000.

The International Greentech and Eco Product Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM), held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, showcased a variety of electric vehicles for commercial use.
Among them is the CAM EC35 electric van, which is available in three versions: panel van, semi-panel van, and window van. The displayed unit is a window van that has been modified into an ambulance.
All three versions share the same dimensions, measuring 4,500 mm in length, 1,680 mm in width, and 1,985 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,050 mm. The gross weight is 2,600 kg, while the payload capacity ranges from 1,025 to 1,090 kg.
The panel van accommodates two seats, the semi-panel van has five seats, while the window van features a configuration for six or eight seats.
The EC35 is powered by a single electric motor located on the rear axle, generating 80 hp (60 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. Energy is supplied by a 38.7 kWh battery, which allows for a range of 268 km based on the WLTP cycle.
Standard AC charging takes approximately five hours to recharge the battery from 20% to 80%, while DC fast charging requires 80 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% or 2.5 hours for a full charge.
Additional features of the EC35 include power windows, ABS, EBD, reverse sensors, and a reverse camera with the feed displayed on an eight-inch screen.
Needless to say, several modifications must be made to convert it into an ambulance.
These include installing a LED light bar, siren, loudspeakers, PA system, and eight units of LED warning lights (two on the front grille, four on the side of the roof, and two on the rear of the roof). All rear windows are tinted with a VLT of 95%.
Inside, the vehicle features an 18 mm thick waterproof plywood floor, aluminum cabinets, and an oxygen pipeline along with related components. It is also equipped with a fire extinguisher, AC inverter, three-pin socket, USB ports, LED ceiling lights, and two stretchers.
The EC35 is priced starting at RM135,000 for the panel van, RM138,500 for the semi-panel van, and RM145,000 for the eight-seat window van.
The ambulance version will set buyers back RM199,000. It comes with a warranty of five years or 120,000 km for the vehicle, and a one-year warranty for the installation.
Isuzu D-Max demonstrates its fuel-sipping capabilities once again by completing a record-breaking 2,000 km journey on a single 76-litre fuel tank.
This is not the first time the D-Max has flaunted its prowess. Back in 2015, the D-Max completed a journey from Bangkok to Singapore, covering a distance of 1,809 km on just one tank of diesel.
Then in March 2020, Isuzu Malaysia successfully drove a 1.9-litre Single Cab model loaded with a tonne of weight, clocking a distance of over 1,000 kilometres using just its single tank of fuel.
For the latest achievement, the company fielded three units of the D-Max, which comprised the 1.9L 4X2 Auto Plus, 1.9L 4X4 Auto Premium, and the 3.0L 4X4 X-Terrain variants.
The pickup trucks were driven from the central Thai town of Phitsanulok, located approximately 300 km north of Bangkok to Klang, Selangor.
This was the first time the company put the new third-generation D-Max to the test. Besides featuring a highly aerodynamic exterior design, the 2024 models feature updated Euro 4 engines, offering superior power delivery and fuel efficiency.
The epic feat was witnessed by a technical steward from the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) who sealed the fuel tanks and observed that the vehicles were driven throughout the journey without any introduction of additional fuel.
It also earned the Isuzu D-Max a place in the Malaysian Book of Records for the ‘Longest Distance Driven In A Pick-up Truck With A Single Tank Of Fuel’.
Speaking at the arrival of the vehicles at the new Ultra Gallant Isuzu 3S Centre in Klang, Selangor after completing its 2,000km journey, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia Shunsuke Okazoe said that the achievement underlined Isuzu’s amazing engineering capabilities in developing Blue Power diesel engines that perform way beyond the call of duty.
“While we do not expect every customer to drive their Isuzu vehicles 2,000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel, it clearly demonstrates the level of engineering that goes into every Isuzu vehicle to even make a feat of this magnitude a possibility,” said Okazoe.
“With the rising costs of various daily items including the price of diesel, those who use the Isuzu D-Max in their daily operations will truly benefit from its cost-saving character,” added Light Commercial Vehicle Division COO, Kenkichi Sogo.
Ducati Malaysia has officially launched the Ducati Multistrada V4 RS, a motorcycle that combines superbike
performance with long-distance touring comfort.
The combination makes the Multistrada V4 RS equally suitable for both high-speed riding as well as cross-country exploration.
What’s interesting is that the Multistrada V4 RS is the only Multistrada to be powered by the Desmosedici Stradale, the MotoGP-derived engine used on the Panigale and the Streetfighter.
The 1,103 cc four-cylinder engine generates a healthy 180 hp, which is 10 hp more than the Multistrada V4, with a torque of 118 Nm.
Just like the Panigale V4 SP2 , the Multistrada V4 RS also features the STM EVO-SBK dry clutch in billet aluminium for that unmistakable Ducati performance and sound, complemented by an Akrapovič silencer.
In terms of appearance, the Multistrada V4 RS can be distinguished from other versions by its special livery, which includes Iceberg White, red inserts, and MotoGP-inspired graphic elements.
This is further accentuated by specialised carbon fiber components such as the front fender, hand guards, heat shield and front ‘beak’, which are exclusive items to the Multistrada V4 RS.
There’s also a unique serial number shown on the steering head on a black anodised aluminium plate.
Moreover, the motorcycle comes with a technopolymer tail and a titanium subframe, which not only add a fierce look but also reduce weight by 2.5 kg.
Further weight-saving measure includes the use of 17-inch forged aluminum Marchesini wheels, which are 2.7 kg lighter compared to standard cast rims.
The Multistrada V4 RS is equipped with Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 electronic suspension, while the braking system features dual 330 mm discs and Brembo Stylema four-piston monobloc calipers at the front, and a single 265 mm disc with a two-piston Brembo caliper at the rear.
Other features of the motorcycle include Ducati Quickshift, Cornering ABS, Full Power Mode, and a 6.5-inch TFT display.
The seat height is adjustable from 840 mm to 860 mm, or from 810 mm to 830 mm with a low seat accessory.
The Multistrada V4 RS is now available at all Ducati showrooms across Malaysia, with a starting price of RM285,900.
Proton has officially introduced the Proton S70 R3 race car, which will compete in the gruelling Sepang 1000km endurance race scheduled from November 22 to 24.
Official images released by the national car manufacturer show the S70 R3 undergoing final preparations, awaiting only the application of its racing livery.
Specifications have not been disclosed; however, based on the distinct roar heard in a video shared on October 1, there is a possibility that the car uses the 1.6-litre Campro engine, similar to those used in previous Proton racing cars.
Established in 2003, Proton R3 is the factory supported motorsports division of Proton with the acronym standing for Race, Rally, Research.
Over the last two decades, R3 have successfully campaigned Proton models both domestically and internationally in racing and rallying events, while using the knowledge gained to develop a range of performance enhancing components and limited edition models for sale to customers.
More recently, they have also ventured into the lubricants space, selling performance lubricants carrying the R3 banner.
The S70 R3 is the latest in a long line of Proton models developed for motorsports. With its debut, both Proton and its motorsports division are venturing into uncharted waters, campaigning a car co-developed with Geely and just one year after its market launch.
Proton is the most successful OEM in the 15-year history of Sepang 1000km with six wins, while R3 are the most successful team with five wins, including three in a row from 2017 to 2019.
“Having not competed in the last three Sepang 1000km races, Proton is excited to be back on the starting grid in 2024. The Proton S70 R3 marks a new milestone for the brand as we take a model developed together with Geely into the heat of competition for the very first time,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton.
“Despite being a new car, Proton is taking the challenge to field two units of the S70 R3 in the race instead of using a proven older model as a backup. We are determined to prove the abilities of the newest Proton sedan model in the racetrack and while we expect competition from teams who have actively competed the last three years, it is our belief the lessons learnt in racing will translate to us building better cars for our customers in the future,” he added.

The rapid adoption of EVs in Malaysia is a testament to the country’s progress in embracing a cleaner, greener future,” he said.
Proton announced it has recorded sales of 11,269 units (domestic + export) in September to bring its year to date (YTD) total sales volume to 112,758 units.
As a result, the national automaker remains in second position in the national automotive sales rankings with a forecast market share of 20.1% for the month and a YTD figure of 19.1% for the whole of 2024.
Total sales for the automotive industry were down in September, historically a slow month, as total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have dropped to its lowest point in 17 months.
Early estimates show the number to be at just 56,067 units, which is a reduction of 22.2% from the previous month. The estimated YTD total for TIV however remains ahead of 2023 with a total volume of just under 590,000 units being 3% better than last year.
Launched on 19 August this year, the 2025 Proton X70 enabled the company to return back to the head of the C-segment SUV market with 1,466 units sold in September. This is the highest sales volume for the model since December 2022.
The other two Proton SUV models also ended the month as sales leaders. After being updated in June, the Proton X50 continued its strong sales performance with another 1,771 units sold. The Proton X90, meanwhile, retook leadership for D-segment sales with 217 units sold to bring its YTD total to a market leading 2,724 units.
Another model leading its segment for YTD sales is the Proton S70, which remains the cumulative sales leader for the segment and added 1,013 units to bring its total to 14,768 units in its first full year of sales.
Though temporarily displaced from the top of the monthly sales leaderboard it will receive a boost with the unveiling of the Proton S70 R3 that is set to compete in the Sepang 1000km endurance race in November.
The Proton Saga continues to be the company’s bestseller, achieving 5,162 sales last month, placing it in second place for A-segment sedans. Its sedan sister, the Proton Persona, clocked up 1,295 sales while the Proton Iriz had a steady sales month with 345 units sold.
Aveta Global Marketing Sdn Bhd, the manufacturer, assembler and distributor of Aveta motorcycles, has expanded its adventure bike range with the official launch of the new VTM 250.
The dual-purpose motorcycle is available in two variants, each catering to different target groups.
The LX variant, available by the end of October, is designed for enduro enthusiasts ready to explore various trails and terrains.
By December, the M variant will hit the market, offers an affordable entry into the world of supermoto suitable for everyday use.
Both variants share a 250cc oil-cooled 4-stroke single-cylinder SOHC engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine makes 18.8 hp at 8,500 rpm and 16 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm.
The key difference lies in their ground clearance and wheel sizes. The LX boasts a higher ground clearance of 305 mm, with a 21-inch front rim and 18-inch rear rim, while the M variant offers 290 mm clearance with 17-inch front and rear aluminium rims.
The company says the aluminium rims on the M variant not only enhance durability but also reduce overall weight, improving agility and handling for street riding.
Additionally, the colour schemes differ, with the LX available in Arsenal Red or Army Green, and the M in Blazing Red or Admiral Blue.
The VTM 250 LX is priced at RM12,988 (excluding insurance and road tax) while the M variant will retail at RM13,388. Both variants come with a one-year or 10,000km warranty, whichever comes first.
To sweeten the deal, Aveta is offering an exclusive Gift with Purchase (GWP) set for the first 50 customers of each VTM 250 variant (LX and M).
At the Ducati World Premiere 2025, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer showcased two updated Scrambler models: the Scrambler Icon Dark and Scrambler Full Throttle.
The Scrambler Icon Dark features an aggressive all-black appearance, highlighted by a matte black tank and a modern version of the Scrambler logo. Its side panels and rear fairing contribute to a lighter look.
In contrast, the Scrambler Full Throttle draws inspiration from 1970s flat track motorcycles. This is evident in its black and bronze livery, along with side panels adorned with the number 62, commemorating the year the Scrambler was first introduced—1962.
Additionally, the design is emphasized with lower handlebars, a short front mudguard, a Termignoni silencer, and Ducati Performance LED indicators. Also included is an up/down Quickshifter.
As before, the Scrambler is powered by an air-cooled 803cc twin-cylinder engine, producing 73 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 65.2 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. This engine is paired with a six-speed transmission.
The suspension system consists of KYB inverted forks at the front and a monoshock rear shock absorber with preload adjustment. The bike features 18-inch wheels at the front and 17-inch wheels at the rear.
Other retained features include a 4.3-inch TFT screen, Ride-by-Wire throttle, Riding Modes, and Cornering ABS.
According to Ducati, the Scrambler Icon Dark will be available in the market starting this month, followed by the Full Throttle in December.
Typically, cars left sitting for an extended period can encounter various issues, including an inability to start. However, this is not the case for the Perodua Myvi.
In addition to having the remarkable ability to ‘fly’ and tailgate supercars on the highway, the Myvi can also be started normally, even after lying unused for years. It’s little wonder that the hatchback has earned the title of King.
The extraordinary quality of the Myvi was recently demonstrated by its owner from the United Kingdom in a video that has gone viral on social media.
The man recorded the video as a farewell to his Myvi before disposing of it. However, he was astonished when the car, which had been left neglected for nearly five years, started up easily.
Not only that, the engine also sounds like as if it had been driven regularly over the years.
In the video, the Myvi owner expressed some regret about having to dispose of his old car.
“I’m regretting it but you are not going to change my mind,” he said.
“Rather than scrapping it, maybe try to get it to the MOT (Ministry of Transport). Because someone is selling it for £2,000 still,” he added.
Sime Darby Motors (SDM) has announced that it has sold over 10,000 BYD vehicles nationwide since being appointed the official distributor of the brand in September 2022.
To celebrate this achievement, Sime Darby Motors recently organised the ‘BYD Dream Drive Melaka 2024’ convoy, which was joined by over 60 BYD vehicles.
According to the company, Melaka was chosen to coincide with this year’s 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, making it an apt destination given its historical connections with China dating back to the 15th century.
Jeffrey Gan, the Managing Director of Southeast Asia at Sime Darby Motors, stated the milestone reflected the growing adoption of electric vehicles in the region and Sime Darby’s strong position as a leader in EV.
“Our commitment to providing the best experience and services through this strategic partnership with BYD has contributed to this success,” he added.
Eagle Zhao, the Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, added, “This milestone reflects the trust and support of our customers who embrace the future of mobility with BYD. It’s been an incredible journey with Sime Darby Motors and we look forward to elevating sustainable driving experiences in Malaysia.”
BYD Malaysia said it has set its sights on reaching the next 10,000 cars milestone in a shorter timeframe.
Meanwhile, Sime Darby Motors plans to expand the BYD network in Malaysia to 30 showrooms by the end of this year. Currently, there are 26 BYD showrooms nationwide. This consists of 19 dealer partners, with 16 3S centres and 10 1S centres.
Cars are complex machines designed for driving. If not used for an extended period, believe it or not, a lot of things tend to go wrong with them.
For those who need to store their cars for a long time due to reasons such as work commitments and the like, we have compiled several useful tips for you:
Fill up the tank
Do not leave your car with an empty tank, as moisture can form and lead to rust in the fuel tank. The best approach is to fill up the tank completely and add additives or stabilizers that can help prevent rust and corrosion.
Change the oil
Engine oil or lubricant left for too long can corrode internal engine components. Before leaving your car for a long period of time, it’s best to change the engine oil and be sure to run the engine to ensure it covers all components properly.
Maintain the battery
If you plan to leave your car for an extended period, disconnect the cables from the terminals (negative terminal first, followed by the positive terminal) and store the battery in a dry place, ensuring it is not exposed to sunlight.
Clean the interior and exterior
Make sure the exterior of your car is clean before leaving it, as dirt, such as dust, tree sap, and bird droppings, can damage the paint if left for too long. For the interior, vacuum the carpets and seats, and remove any trash to prevent unwelcome visitors like cockroaches and mice.
Park in a safe place
The safest place to store your car is certainly in a porch, garage, or any covered area. Avoid parking your car outside, but if you are left with no options, use a high-quality car cover.
Avoid using the parking brake
One of the most common mistakes is using the parking brake before leaving the car for months. This can cause the brake pads to stick to the discs. Alternatively, use wheel chocks or blocks of wood to hold the tyres in place. Make sure to park on a flat surface.
Care for the wiper blades
The rubber blades on your windshield wipers can stick to the glass if left for too long. There are several ways to prevent this from happening. You can wrap the blades in plastic or cloth, remove the blades entirely, or simply stand the wipers upright.
Use a jack to elevate the car
Leaving tyres stationary for a long time can cause them to flatten or develop flat spots. This issue can be avoided by using a jack to lift your car.
If you recall from last August, we listed the top five electric vehicles (EVs) available for prices between RM100,000 and RM150,000.
Notably, all five EVs in that list were from Chinese brands. However, this isn’t necessarily a drawback, as many EVs from that country offer impressive performance, technology, and features at affordable prices.
In this article, we present the top five EVs priced between RM150,000 and RM200,000, which still includes candidates from Chinese brands. But this time, there’s good news for those wanting to try EVs from European brands, as there are three models that may suit their preferences:
Volvo EX30 Plus (RM188,888)
Recently launched in the Malaysian market, the Volvo EX30 may not be entirely European, as it uses a platform made by Geely—also employed in the smart #1 and Zeekr X—and is assembled in China. However, it is undoubtedly a true Volvo.
The Thor Hammer LED lights signify that it is a Volvo, and the minimalist interior showcases various sustainable materials, which is in line with the brand’s strategy. For performance enthusiasts, you’ll be pleased to know that the Plus variant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. Want something faster? You can opt for the Ultra Twin Performance variant but that is priced above RM200,000.
BYD Seal (RM163,800 – RM199,800)
In this writer’s opinion, no EV list would be complete without BYD. Within the price range of RM150,000 to RM200,000, you can acquire the flagship Seal sedan, which is available in three variants: Dynamic, Premium, and Performance.
These variants differ in performance (with the Performance being the fastest at 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds) and range (the Premium can travel the farthest at 570 km). Interestingly, regardless of the chosen variant, buyers get a nearly identical list of features and specifications.
XPeng G6 (RM165,000 – RM185,000)
XPeng is a new EV brand from China introduced in Malaysia by Bermaz, alleviating concerns about after-sales service, as Bermaz is well-experienced in this area.
The G6 is XPeng’s first ever model available in Malaysia, offering a premium coupe SUV design along with advanced technologies such as the Smart Electric Platform Architecture 2.0 with an 800V architecture, the XOpera surround sound system, and XPILOT 2.5 safety features for well under RM200,000.
smart #3 Pro (RM175,000)
Similar to the Volvo EX30, the smart #3 could be seen as an Eurasian blend, combining technology from an Asian company (Geely) with European design (specifically German, as it was designed by Mercedes-Benz).
The Pro is the entry-level variant in the #3 lineup. At RM175,000, it offers good value for those interested in the smart brand as it packs 272 PS and 343 Nm of torque, can reach 0 to 100 km/h in a scant 5.8 seconds, and has a range of up to 325 km on a full charge, which is 10 km further than the #1 Pro.
MINI Electric Cooper SE (RM193,888)
This writer believes many readers of Engear TV are fans of MINI. The second generation of the MINI Electric Cooper is viewed as a more worthwhile investment, featuring not only a more modern design but also vastly increased power and range.
Launched in Malaysia last July, the new Cooper SE is powered by a single electric motor on the front axle, producing 218 PS and 330 Nm (an increase of 34 PS and 60 Nm), allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. With a larger battery capacity of 54.2 kWh, it provides a range of 402 km on a full charge, almost double the range of the previous model.
BYD is set to further expand its electric vehicle lineup in Malaysia with a new MPV called the M6.
In a recent media Q&A session in Changsha, China, Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, confirmed that the fully-electric MPV will enter the Malaysian market this year.
However, the exact launch date is still unknown, along with the specifications and variants that will be offered.
It is expected that the specifications for the Malaysian market will not differ significantly from those available in Indonesia and Thailand.
In Indonesia, the M6 can be hand in six- or seven-seat configurations, while in Thailand, it is available only as a six-seater.
Both markets offer two output variants. The base variant, powered by a front axle electric motor, has 163 PS and 310 Nm of torque, whereas the more powerful variant (known as Superior in Indonesia and Extended in Thailand) gets 204 PS and 310 Nm from the same single-motor setup.
As with other BYD EVs, juice for the motor is supplied by an LFP battery, with a capacity of 55.4 kWh for the base variant and 71.8 kWh for the Superior/Extended variants. This equals to an NEDC range of up to 420 km for the former and 530 km for the latter.
The base M6 supports 85-kW DC fast charging, while the Superior/Extended can accommodate up to 115 kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in just 40 minutes. Meanwhile, AC charging is limited to 7 kW for both variants.
The M6 can be considered a replacement for the e6, which was supposed to launch in Malaysia after the Atto 3. Compared to the e6, its exterior design aligns more closely with recent BYD models, featuring a silver grille that connects to the projector LED headlights.
On the side, chrome trim is generously applied on the window frames and side skirts, while the rear boasts a full-width light strip accompanied by a chrome strip. Unlike the Atto 3, the M6 ditches the “Build Your Dream” wording with the more understated “BYD” badge.
While the interior is evidently more conventional compared to the Atto 3 or Dolphin, the M6 still offers a comprehensive equipment list, which includes a 12.8-inch rotating screen, dual wireless charging, keyless entry, a panoramic glass roof, and automatic air conditioning, to name a few.
In terms of safety, the M6 comes equipped with six airbags and plenty of ADAS features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring.
As for pricing, the M6 is sold for between 379 million to 429 million rupiah (approximately RM102,968 to RM116,481) in Indonesia, while in Thailand, it starts from 829,900 baht to 929,900 baht (around RM106,014 to RM118,788).
The Subaru Chiffon is a kei car based on the Daihatsu Tanto that has been available in the Japanese market since 2016.
Thanks to a growing interest in outdoor lifestyles, Subaru has now introduced a more rugged version of the Chiffon known as the Chiffon Try.
While the basic shape of the Chiffon remains unchanged, the Try version sports a more robust appearance brought about by a skid plate and black plastic accents on the front bumper, rear bumper, and sides.
Additionally, the car also comes equipped with roof rails. For colour options, there are 11 choices available, including five new colours: Black Mica Metallic/Lake Blue Metallic, Black Mica Metallic/Sand Beige Metallic, Black Mica Metallic/Forest Khaki Metallic, Lake Blue Metallic, and Forest Khaki Metallic.
Measuring approximately 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, 1,755 mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm, the Chiffon Try is unmistakably compact.
However, egress and ingress is an easy affair due to the lack of B-pillars. Subaru coins this particular design as the “Miracle Open Door,” which also incorporates electric sliding doors for added convenience.
The interior design is not significantly different from the base version; however, as a variant tailored for outdoor activities, the Chiffon Try features water-resistant upholstery on all seats.
Additionally, the Chiffon Try offers a flexible seating configuration, allowing the front seats to slide back up to 540 mm. The front seats can also be fully reclined, enabling passengers to rest or to accommodate longer items like surfboards.
To maximise rear legroom or cargo space, the rear seats can also slide up to 240 mm.
Powering the Chiffon Try is a 660 cc three-cylinder engine that generates 52 PS and 60 Nm of torque. A CVT is responsible for delivering power to the front wheels, with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version available for customers as an alternative.
Pricing in Japan starts at 1,665,000 yen (approximately RM48,171) for the 2WD version and 1,765,000 yen (approximately RM51,064) for the AWD version.
