School bus fire in Thailand kills 25, driver arrested

A school bus carrying elementary and junior high school students and their teachers caught fire in Pathum Thani, resulting in the tragic loss of 25 lives.

According to a spokesperson from the authorities, the bus was one of three rented by Wat Khao Phaya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani to take students and teachers on a field trip to Ayutthaya.

The spokesperson reported that the bodies of 22 students and three teachers were found after the fire was extinguished, while 19 other individuals on the bus survived.

Major General Sipakhom Iamwong, Deputy Commissioner of the Region 1 Police Bureau, confirmed that the bus was carrying 38 students and six teachers.

He noted that retrieving the bodies was particularly challenging due to the extensive damage caused by the fire.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that Thai police managed to apprehend the driver of the bus. The driver, identified as Saman Chanput, surrendered on Tuesday, just hours after the incident.

Chayanont Meesati, deputy head of the provincial police, stated that the bus suddenly lost balance on its right front tyre, causing it to swerve, collide with a car in front, and scrape against a concrete barrier.

It was believed that sparks from the collision ignited the fire which engulfed the bus. The driver claimed he attempted to extinguish the flames using a fire extinguisher taken from another bus but was unsuccessful and subsequently fled in panic.

Thai police reported that Chanput is being held on charges of reckless driving resulting in death and injury, failing to stop to assist others, and failing to report the accident.

Authorities are also investigating whether the bus company adhered to all safety standards.

MG5 fastback sedan launched in Malaysia – RM93,900

Following its preview last August, the new MG5 has now been officially launched for the local market.

The sedan with a fastback design is available in a single variant with a starting price of RM93,900.

However, in conjunction with MG’s 100th anniversary campaign, SAIC Motor Malaysia is offering a rebate of RM7,000, bringing the price down to RM86,900.

For extra peace of mind, the MG5 comes with an unlimited mileage warranty for five years and a seven-year unlimited mileage warranty for the engine and transmission.

In terms of size, the MG5 is closer to a C-segment sedan, measuring 4,675 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, 1,480 mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 2,680 mm.

However, SAIC Motor Malaysia, the official distributor of the MG brand in the country, says the MG5 will be marketed as a B-segment sedan, making it the largest in its class.

When compared to its closest competitors, such as the Honda City and Toyota Vios, the MG5 boasts a more prominent profile thanks to its sporty fastback coupe design.

Included features comprise LED daytime running lights, a 3D grille, 17-inch Tomahawk alloy wheels, a sunroof, and a ducktail spoiler at the rear.

There are five exterior colours available to choose from, namely Nuclear Yellow, Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl, and Camden Grey.

Inside, you will find black leather upholstery with contrasting red stitching, as well as a seven-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other features include a single-zone air conditioning system with a rear air vent, a PM2.5 air filter, six speakers, three USB charging slots, and a 360-degree surround camera system.

Powering the MG5 is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder DVVT engine that’s good for 114 PS at 6,000 rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm.

With an iCVT transmission with eight gear ratios driving the front wheels, the MG5 is capable of a fuel consumption figure of 17.5 km/l.

According to SAIC Motor Malaysia, the powertrain has undergone durability testing over a distance of 2.35 million km.

On the safety front, the MG5 is equipped with MG Pilot, which includes Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Collision Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets larger battery, retuned suspension

Mitsubishi has introduced the upgraded version of the Outlander PHEV, which will begin sales in Japan this autumn, followed by 20 European markets in the spring of next year.

According to Mitsubishi, the petrol variant is scheduled to launch in 2025. Both versions will be entering the North American, Australian, and New Zealand markets soon.

As before, the Outlander PHEV is powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 134 hp and 203 Nm. Augmenting the ICE is a front electric motor generating 114 hp and 255 Nm, and a rear electric motor contributing 134 hp and 195 Nm.

The combination of the internal combustion engine and dual electric motors provides the Outlander PHEV with a total output of 302 hp, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

With a larger fuel tank capacity of 53 litres, Mitsubishi claims that the Outlander PHEV can achieve a hybrid driving range of up to 844 km. Official tests also indicate it has fuel consumption as low as 0.8 l/100 km and emissions of 18 g/km.

A notable update to the Outlander PHEV’s powertrain is the lithium-ion battery pack, which is now 40% larger, with a capacity of 22.7 kWh, providing an electric driving range of 86 km based on the WLTP cycle.

Efficiency and performance can be further maximised with three drive modes: EV, Series Hybrid, and Parallel Hybrid.

The EV mode allows the vehicle to operate entirely on electric power, while the Series Hybrid mode uses the engine to generate electricity as needed. In Parallel Hybrid mode, both the electric motor and engine work in unison.

Additionally, the Outlander PHEV features Normal, EV, Save, and Charge modes. In EV mode, the SUV is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 135 km/h.

Mitsubishi says the battery pack can be charged using Type 2 and CHAdeMO chargers, and it also supports vehicle-to-home charging capabilities for emergency situations.

For the chassis, Mitsubishi has tuned the tyres, shock absorbers, and spring rates to enhance ride comfort, while the dual pinion assist electric power steering has been engineered for more manageable steering and increased feedback.

Moreover, the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system now offers enhanced grip in all driving conditions, with seven selectable modes: Normal, Eco, Power, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud.

In terms of appearance, not much has changed for the 2025 model year, except for the grille and the addition of 20-inch wheels. Inside, the Outlander PHEV now features a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a Dynamic Sound audio system with 12 speakers from Yamaha.

The safety kit includes features such as Forward Collision Mitigation, Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, and a Driver Monitoring System.

MyDigital ID not needed to log into MyJPJ on Oct 10 – Anthony Loke

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the public will not need to use MyDigital ID to log into the MyJPJ app starting October 10.

Loke stated that users of MyJPJ can log in and use the app as usual.

“The public need not worry that after October 10 they will not be able to use MyJPJ. The application will continue to be accessible easily and quickly,” he said.

The media previously reported that users will be required to log into the MyJPJ app using a MyDigital ID starting October 10.

MyDigital ID serves as a form of digital identification and self-verification of individuals, which will be utilised by both the public and private sectors to confirm user identity during online transactions.

According to Loke, the instruction regarding the necessity of using MyDigital ID in MyJPJ was issued through a pop-up announcement within the app.

He clarified that the instruction was not an official announcement from the Ministry of Transport or the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and had been retracted immediately.

“The information communicated through the MyJPJ pop-up may have caused confusion among the public. I’ve seen numerous comments on social media expressing concern and feedback regarding this information,” he said, adding that MyJPJ currently has 10.5 million users.

He noted that the ministry supports the use of MyDigital ID; however, the integration process with the MyJPJ app needs to be conducted on the backend.

“We have held discussions and reached an agreement that the use of MyDigital ID as a login for the MyJPJ app should be implemented smoothly. This is to ensure that users of MyJPJ face no issues, and we will take some time for the backend integration,” Loke added.

Malaysian-market BYD Dolphin, Atto 3 not affected by recall – Sime Darby Motors

Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, has confirmed in a statement that the BYD models sold in the country are not involved in the recall campaign announced by BYD in China.

According to Sime Darby Motors, the recall is limited exclusively to vehicles sold in the Chinese market.

In the recall announcement, BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and BYD Automobile Co., Ltd. stated that they are recalling “certain domestically produced Dolphin and Yuan Plus (also known as the Atto 3) electric vehicles.”

“The batches and models recalled within the China mainland region do not pertain to markets outside of the China mainland region,” the company said.

On September 30, CarNewsChina reported that BYD had recalled a total of 96,714 units of the Dolphin and Yuan Plus due to a potential fire risk.

Of this total, 87,762 units were manufactured between February 4, 2023, and December 26, 2023, while the remaining 8,952 units were produced between November 2, 2022, and June 19, 2023.

According to the China-based portal, there was a defect in the manufacturing process of the electric power steering column assembly (CEPS) controller.

When the equipment tool cover is closed, it may interfere with the capacitors on the controller circuit board, leading to micro-cracks in the capacitors.

These cracks could enlarge when the vehicle is in use, potentially resulting in a short circuit and an increased risk of fire.

To eliminate safety risks, BYD dealer representatives will install insulating pads on the control components free of charge.

Five reasons why the Toyota Yaris remains relevant for youth

For the younger generation or those starting a new family who are in search of a new car, what features do you desire in a daily-use vehicle?

Compact size? Practicality? Fuel efficiency? Comprehensive safety features?

The answer to these questions can be found in the Toyota Yaris, which serves as an excellent example of a car that is highly relevant for young people in Malaysia.

Despite the overwhelming variety of attractive car models in the market, many young individuals may not realise that the Yaris still holds unique advantages.

1. Hatchback with Sporty Driving Experience

Equipped with a 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine delivering 107 hp and 140 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT, the Toyota Yaris offers a quiet and smooth driving experience while being fuel-efficient.

With exciting features like front and rear disc brakes, paddle shifters, and a Sport mode, young drivers should know that the Yaris is capable of delivering a sporty driving experience.

2. The Toyota Yaris is an Ideal First Car

Although it has a compact footprint, the Toyota Yaris can still provide a practical cabin layout and ample legroom for rear passengers.

Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels have been enhanced with acoustic glass to reduce outside noise. Moreover, the audio volume is also lowered when you shift into reverse.

The 286-litre cargo space is adequate for personal belongings, making the Yaris an ideal first car for young people.

3. Comprehensive Safety Features

For a car priced under RM100,000, the Toyota Yaris comes equipped with excellent safety features, ideal for young people wanting to protect their families.

Examples include Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), a 360-degree Panorama View Monitor (PVM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), as well as Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), which displays live camera feed on the screen when the turn signals are activated.

The Toyota Yaris also comes with Toyota Safety Sense, which comprises Pre-Collision System (PCS) and Lane Departure Alert (LDA), ensuring a safer driving experience.

With seven airbags and six parking sensors (two front, four rear), the Toyota Yaris does not compromise on safety compared to more expensive vehicles.

4. Features Highly Appreciated by Women Drivers

The sporty package means little if the car lacks driver-friendly functions.

In addition to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, there’s also an auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic folding side mirrors, and a full-size spare tyre.

Not to forget, the Toyota Yaris now comes with front and rear dashcams!

For the ladies who are solo drivers or often drive home in the middle of the night, you’ll appreciate the “Follow Me Home” feature available in the Toyota Yaris.

5. Outstanding After-Sales Support from Toyota

An extensive specification list does not inherently guarantee user loyalty.

What gives young people confidence in the Toyota Yaris is the comprehensive and high-value after-sales support network from Toyota, covering aspects of purchasing, ownership, as well as service and maintenance.

The Toyota Yaris is available starting from RM88,000, and with promotions worth up to RM9,500, you can enjoy monthly installments as low as RM658.

We drove Proton e.MAS 7’s twin, the Geely Galaxy E5

Last week, the Proton Centre of Excellence (COE) served as the final destination for Geely’s Galaxy E5 world tour, which kicked off in China.

Despite being dubbed a ‘world tour’, the convoy, consisting of several left-hand drive Galaxy E5 units, actually traversed just three Southeast Asian countries: Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Nevertheless, the 3,700 km journey was deemed sufficient to showcase the Galaxy E5’s capabilities and durability in real-world conditions.

According to a representative from Geely, the convoy successfully completed the journey without issues, with each unit arriving at the COE in good condition, despite having to face floods in Laos caused by Typhoon Yagi.

Taking advantage of the cars being here, Proton invited media representatives to test drive the Proton e.MAS 7 twin on its famed test track at the COE. Additionally, select media personnel were also given the opportunity to drive the EV on public roads for a more realistic driving experience.

From my observation, the test drive session provided clear hints as to the design, technology, and performance of the e.MAS 7, which will soon be launched in the local market.

Is the Exterior Design Similar?

Proton previously emphasised that the e.MAS 7 is not merely a rebadged Galaxy E5. This claim holds true on a technical front, as the e.MAS 7 was developed concurrently with the Galaxy E5. According to Proton, over 100 of their engineers were involved in this project.

However, in terms of exterior design, it is fair to say that Proton may not have all the freedom to make significant changes to the e.MAS 7, aside from altering the logo and badges. Elements like the Infinite Weave design found in other Geely-based models are also absent, as the e.MAS 7 lacks a front grille.

It is also interesting to note that the Galaxy E5 that we test drove came with 19-inch wheels, one inch bigger than that of the e.MAS 7.

A Spacious Yet Luxurious Interior

Similar to its exterior, the cabin design of the e.MAS 7 is expected to be quite similar to that of the Galaxy E5. This is a good thing, as the interior design of this Chinese EV is quite impressive in terms of layout and materials used.

The leather upholstery appears luxurious and feels soft to the touch. Importantly, it is applied extensively, not only on the seats but also covering a substantial part of the dashboard and door panels.

In addition to white, Geely offers choices in brown-red and dark blue. Will Proton offer the same colour options with the e.MAS 7? We look forward to finding out.

Roomy and Practical—Perfect for Malaysians

With a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the Galaxy E5 offers a spacious and comfortable cabin. I was quite impressed with the rear legroom, which is comparable to that of D-segment vehicles, even though this is a C-segment SUV.

The rear seats provide adequate thigh support, but what’s more intriguing is the front passenger seat, which comes with Ottoman functionality—a feature typically found only in luxury MPVs.

For those who often carry a lot of items, fret not: the Galaxy E5 includes 33 storage compartments, including a drawer beneath the rear seats. Although the trunk space is modest (461 litres) for an SUV, there is an additional 51 liters of storage under the trunk floor.

Packed with Technology

Both the Galaxy E5 and the e.MAS 7 are powered by the same operating system, Flyme Auto, driven by the 7 nm Longying One Chip, which is touted as the first smart cockpit chip from China. Besides smartphone integration, this OS also offers voice command features for various tasks—think of it as your personal assistant.

The EV also boasts a Flyme Sound audio system with a capacity of 1,000 watts and 16 speakers, including those in the headrests. Additionally, there are external speakers useful for playing music during a gathering.

You can also use the external speakers to issue warnings to pedestrians or other road users. Notably, the sound choices available are quite unconventional, featuring sounds like “Hi,” roar of a tiger, a cat’s meow, supercar engine revving, and more.

The Galaxy E5 is Designed for Comfort—What About the e.MAS 7?

While brief, the driving session on both the Proton test track and public roads effectively revealed the character of the Galaxy E5. It was clear that the EV is tuned for a more relaxed driving experience, unlike other Chinese EVs I have tried, such as the smart #1.

The Galaxy E5 is equipped with a single electric motor at the front axle, generating 218 PS and 320 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 184 km/h.

In today’s landscape, where EVs can easily match supercars, these figures may not seem impressive. However, I believe that the Galaxy E5 is sufficiently fast for the average driver. The throttle response is calm and unhurried, even when depressed aggressively.

Moreover, the Galaxy E5’s suspension system is very soft. During our drive to Puncak Alam, the vehicle proved adept at soaking up bumps from uneven surfaces almost seamlessly within the cabin. Nevertheless, the Galaxy E5 tend to bounce when cruising at high speeds or being driven on undulating roads.

Conclusion

As mentioned, the test drive session was valuable as it provided considerable insight into the upcoming Proton e.MAS 7.

In terms of exterior and interior design, as well as infotainment systems and technology, I personally do not expect significant changes, as the Galaxy E5 package is already appealing.

However, regarding driving dynamics—particularly throttle response and suspension tuning—Proton will undoubtedly apply its expertise to ensure the e.MAS 7 is well-suited for Malaysian road conditions while meeting the expectations of local EV buyers.

Volvo EX30 first impression: small on the outside, BIG on the inside

Developed on Geely’s SEA platform, which also underpins the smart #1 and Zeekr X, the EX30 is the smallest vehicle from Volvo to date.

That being said, don’t let its compact size fool you. The EX30 encompasses everything buyers in this segment desire—style, technology, practicality, and of course, performance.

Thanks to the well-thought-out though (though slightly unusual) activities organised during a recent media test drive by Volvo Car Malaysia, we gained a clear insight into the true capabilities of the EX30 and why it stands out in the market.

But before delving into the whole experience, let’s first explore the exterior and interior of this rather interesting EV. With dimensions of 4,223 mm in length, 1,837 mm in width, and 1,555 mm in height, it is indeed smaller than both the #1 and X.

Nevertheless, the EX30 boasts well-balanced and sporty proportions, featuring equally long front and rear overhangs, a lengthy wheelbase of 2,650 mm, and large wheels to complete the look.

Even though the test units were wrapped in camouflage, it’s easy to pinpoint it as a Volvo at first glance, thanks to the prominent Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights. Of course, the brand logo is also clearly displayed on the front of the car.

As one would expect from the Swedish marque, the interior of the EX30 is stylish and well-organised. In line with its sustainability efforts, Volvo has chosen to apply generous amounts of renewable and recyclable materials throughout nearly every nook and cranny of the cabin.

Aside from the window controls on the center console, you won’t find any physical buttons in the EX30. In fact, there’s no traditional gauge cluster in this vehicle. All functions and information—like vehicle speed and gear position—must be accessed through a 12.3-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen.

The minimalist approach effectively creates a spacious cockpit; however, those accustomed to conventional controls will take some getting used to. Even adjusting the side mirrors and opening the glovebox must now be done via the touchscreen.

While the interior of the EX30 is undeniably compact, I don’t believe most users will struggle to store their belongings. This is because Volvo has creatively maximised storage space. Firstly, instead of conventional door-mounted speakers, you’ll find a Harman Kardon soundbar covering the entire width of the dashboard to make room in the door panels.

Furthermore, the cupholders in the center console can be slid out fully. Located below this is another substantial storage area where you can place items like a wallet. Interestingly, the floor of this compartment can be opened to create a deeper space, right behind which is a removable tray.

Now, returning to the previously mentioned media test drive. From Volvo Malaysia’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya, we departed for the old airport in Sungai Besi where we did two driving activities: a drag race and a slalom run.

While slalom isn’t new to me, this time it was a bit different as we had to perform it in reverse. The bright and clear video feeds from the exterior cameras helped me avoid the cones.

Next, racing against a Volvo V60 T8 demonstrated the true potential of the EX30 on a straight line. The Twin Motor Performance variant we drove has a ‘secret’ Performance All-Wheel Drive mode that, when activated, generates a maximum power output of 428 PS and 543 Nm.

Just like that, the EX30 blasts from 0 to 100 km/h in a scant 3.6 seconds, surpassing the plug-in hybrid wagon that is actually significantly more powerful.

After the activities in Sungai Besi, we moved to Bamboo Hills for a demonstration of the Park Pilot Assist feature. The feature is incredibly user-friendly and can instantly detect available parking spaces. You simply need to select your desired spot, and the car will handle the rest for you.

Next, we headed to Ikea Damansara for a unique shopping experience. Each team, composed of six media members, was given a budget of RM2,000 to buy as many items as possible to cram into the tiny EV.

Thanks to the boot space, which can accommodate up to 904 litres (when the back seats are folded), a 61-liter compartment beneath the boot floor, and a 7-litre frunk, our team successfully packed several chairs, a futon mattress, pillows, and many other items without a snag.

It is uncustomary for car manufacturers to let motoring media run wild in a mall as part of a media drive but this activity showcased that even though the EX30 is compact, its interior is versatile enough for weekend getaways in the Klang Valley and surrounding areas.

From Kuala Lumpur, we then headed to Janda Baik as the final stop of the media drive. The journey from the capital to this popular resort was enjoyable, especially when cruising along the Karak Highway, given the EX30’s stable and solid handling.

Even after an aggressively spirited day of driving, including the drag race earlier, we arrived in Janda Baik with about 45% battery power remaining. Just imagine the range if driven more conservatively.

For your information, the Twin Motor Performance variant features a 69 kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery, promising a driving range of approximately 450 km based on the WLTP cycle.

The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes using a 153 kW DC fast charger, while AC charging at 11 kW takes about 7.5 hours for a full charge.

Conclusion

For an electric vehicle, the Volvo EX30 offers numerous advantages. Its modern and attractive design—both exterior and interior—is eye-catching, yet never overwhelming.

While the lack of physical buttons might lead to potential buyers feeling a little hesitant, based on my experience, all functions and features can be easily accessed. It just takes a bit of time to learn how to use them.

For me, the key strengths of the EX30 lie in its performance and practicality, making it an ideal choice for young individuals with an active lifestyle.

Six-month-old Proton X50 experiences system failure after trip to Phuket

A woman vacationing in Phuket, Thailand faced a torrid time when her Proton X50 that she drove all the way from Malaysia suddenly experienced a system malfunction.

In a post on the Facebook group ‘X50 Owners Club Malaysia,’ Amira Murad claimed that her car key unexpectedly stopped working and could not be detected, preventing the engine from starting.

For your information, the X50 is equipped with a Remote Engine Start feature that allows the engine to be started remotely using the key fob.

Amira further explained that her X50’s engine could only be started via the Atlas app. However, the engine would immediately shut down every time she opened the door.

In her post, Amira mentioned that she managed to get assistance from Proton service technicians, but they were unable to identify the issue affecting her X50.

This is what she wrote in the post (directly translated):

“The remote battery has been changed. All methods have been tried, but still, no success.

“Proton We Care advised towing it back to Malaysia, as they only cover services within the country. We had to bear the costs for everything, even though the car had a problem due to their product. It’s only been six months since I bought the car.

“The most frustrating part is the ACC system that caused all four tyres to lock. We couldn’t just use ordinary towing. I had to sit in the car on the tow with the windows up. I was stuck in the car for seven hours without being able to open the windows.

“I requested towing service under Proton while waiting at the duty-free area in Bukit Kayu Hitam. They refused, claiming it wasn’t covered. So now we have to figure out how to tow the car to the Malaysian border, as towing services in Thailand only cover up to Thai immigration,” she wrote.

Additionally, in one of the videos she posted, Amira showed that her car door could not be opened, even though the app indicated that it was unlocked.

Some commenters suggested that Amira should have used the physical key hidden inside the key fob to manually unlock the door.
