MG HS pricing announced – RM129,900 for Standard, RM145,900 for Lux

SAIC Motor Malaysia has announced the official prices for the C-segment SUV showcased last August, namely the MG HS.

For the Malaysian market, the MG HS will be available in two variants – Standard and Lux – with prices starting from RM129,900 and RM145,900 respectively.

It comes with a vehicle warranty of five years with unlimited mileage, along with a seven-year warranty for the powertrain, also unlimited mileage.

In celebration of MG’s 100th anniversary, SAIC Motor Malaysia is offering an exclusive introductory discount of RM5,000.

In terms of features, the HS is equipped with LED headlamps with DRL, LED taillights, dual exhaust outlets, and 17-inch alloy wheels for the Standard variant, while the Lux variant gets 18-inch ‘Diamond Cut’ wheels.

Also included are sporty touches such as red brake calipers, a rear spoiler, roof rails capable of carrying a load of up to 50 kg, and a Super Sport driving mode.

Customers can choose from four exterior colours, namely Black Pearl, Arctic White, Camden Grey, and Dynamic Red.

Inside, the HS features black leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with a 360-degree camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the MG iSmart phone connectivity system.

At the rear, there is a cargo space of 463 litres, which can be expanded to 1,287 litres by folding down the back seats. This space is accessible via a powered tailgate.

Powering the HS is a 1.5-litre turbo engine that delivers 162 PS at 5,600 rpm and 250 Nm from 1,700 to 4,400 rpm. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).

For safety, the HS is equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) under the MG Pilot brand.

Kia Carnival is a worthy alternative to Alphard/Vellfire – Test Drive

In Malaysia, when discussing luxury MPVs, whether one likes them or not, the vehicles that invariably come to mind are the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire.

From time to time, names like the Mercedes-Benz Vito and Lexus LM may cross the lips of those with a penchant for the luxurious, but ultimately, the Alphard and Vellfire are consistently top of the list.

This is hardly surprising, as this writer is certain that both models are indeed impressive and worthwhile purchases. However, if you are seeking something different, their closest competitor, the Kia Carnival, proves to be a worthy alternative.

Why, you may ask?

First and foremost, it’s about size. In this writer’s opinion, those who purchase MPVs often rank size as one of the highest criteria before making a decision.

Therefore, if you desire a vehicle that is spacious and roomy, look no further than the Carnival, which is appreciably larger than the Alphard/Vellfire.

For comparison, the Carnival measures 5,155 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, and 1,740 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,090 mm.

In contrast, the Alphard/Vellfire duo is somewhat smaller, with a length of 5,010 mm (5,005 mm for the Vellfire), a width of 1,850 mm, a height of 1,950 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.

In terms of design, the Carnival boasts a sportier appearance that resembles a sleek long wagon due to its lower and wider body shape. This is further accentuated by 19-inch black alloy wheels replacing the previous 18-inch versions.

While the Toyota MPVs are not unattractive, their boxy design does come across as somewhat conventional when positioned alongside their Korean counterpart.

As for the interior, this writer can confidently assert that the quality and features offered by the Carnival are on par with those of the Japanese models, even though the price difference among these vehicles can be as much as RM300,000.

It’s true that the Alphard/Vellfire feel a touch more luxurious due to their Lexus-like touches and higher-grade materials such as genuine Nappa leather upholstery. However, the Carnival still impresses.

The materials covering the seats, dashboard, and door panels feel sufficiently high-quality, as do all the physical buttons present throughout.

The Carnival is replete with features, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a three-zone climate control system, heating and ventilation functions for the front seats, and a Bose audio system with 12 speakers.

Moreover, the High variant of the Carnival is now equipped with Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM) that displays video feed from the side mirror cameras on the digital instrument cluster, a feature that can be activated when you use the turn signals.

In summary, this writer can confidently say that the quality and features provided by the Carnival justify its price tag of almost RM250,000.

The unit that this writer recently test drove was the eight-seat variant featuring a 2-3-3 configuration. The centre seat in the second row is larger enough for adult passengers, and when not in use, it can fold down to create a small table complete with two cup holders.

What’s even more interesting is that this seat can be rotated backwards to face the third-row seats or can be completely removed if desired.

For any MPV, the best seat in the house is usually in the back, and the Carnival does not disappoint in this regard, ensuring passenger comfort with its individual climate control for the rear, as well as retractable sunshades and a sunroof.

Additionally, children need not dispute over charging points for their gadgets, as every seat in the Carnival comes with its own USB port.

It is common for three-row vehicles to have limited cargo space when all seats are in use, but with the Carnival, this is not a concern, as there is a generous, deep storage area located beneath the third-row seats.

Now, how does it perform on the road?

The Carnival is powered by a Smartstream 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels.

This engine generates 202 PS at 3,800 rpm and an impressive 440 Nm of torque, available from as low as 1,750 rpm. While the 2.4-litre turbo engine in the Alphard offers slightly more horsepower, the Carnival’s torque advantage (10 Nm more) does not go unnoticed.

As expected from a diesel engine, the torque is readily available in the lower rpm range, making the Carnival feel smooth from a standstill. In fact, its acceleration is fairly smooth and quick, which is not something you can always say about a vehicle weighing close to two tonnes.

On the highway, the engine remains exceptionally quiet. Should you find yourself needing to overtake, there’s no need for concern over power since it consistently feels adequate, even in Normal mode.

The gearbox is responsive, allowing you to quickly accelerate everytime the accelerator pedal is depressed. It also promptly downshifts to deliver the necessary power for easy overtaking.

With the recent diesel subsidy rationalisation, some may harbour concerns regarding the Carnival’s fuel consumption.

For your information, this writer recorded a fuel efficiency of around 15 km/l or 6.7 l/100 km during a mixed driving cycle that included both urban and highway conditions.

The Carnival boasts a 72-litre fuel tank, meaning that theoretically, the vehicle could be driven nearly 1,080 km before needing to refuel.

If you’re paying full price for diesel at RM3.35 per litre, a complete fill-up would cost approximately RM241.20. Is it worthwhile to spend RM241.20 for a driving range exceeding 1,000 km? That’s for you to decide.

Lastly, the Carnival’s suspension tuning and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) are noteworthy. The suspension is relatively soft, allowing for a confident ride over uneven surfaces without the constant need to apply the brakes.

Nevertheless, there is something about this suspension setup that instils a sense of confidence and stability, especially at higher speeds. This is what makes the MPV enjoyable to drive fast.

The NVH aspect has been carefully addressed, ensuring that as a passenger, you experience a comfortable journey, with wind and tyre noise significantly minimised. The sound of the diesel engine is only noticeable if you stand outside the vehicle.

In conclusion, there is little more that this writer can say about the Carnival except that it is exceptionally good, enjoyable to drive, and packed to the brim with features and tech to meet the needs of buyers in this segment. What’s even better is that its competitive pricing makes it accessible to a broader range of potential MPV buyers.

However, it cannot be denied that the rationalisation of diesel subsidy may lead some to reconsider their decision to purchase the Carnival.

But, for this writer, if you are in a position to spend over RM200,000 on a large MPV, you are likely capable of managing the fuel costs without subsidy.

5th gen Kia Sportage to debut at KLIMS 2024 – CKD, 2 engine choices

Dynamikjaya Motors (DJM), the official distributor of Kia vehicles in Malaysia, has confirmed that the fifth generation Kia Sportage will make its debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2024 this December.

According to the company, the C-segment SUV is locally assembled (CKD) in Kulim, Kedah. Bookings have already opened at all authorised Kia dealerships nationwide, although the pricing has yet to be announced.

As can be seen, the soon-to-be-launched Sportage is the pre-facelift model and not the recently introduced facelift version.

In a FAQ, DJM stated that currently, the facelifted Sportage is only available in South Korea but the SUV is expected to arrive in the local market within the next two years.

The Sportage will be offered with two engine options: the Smartstream 2.0-litre petrol engine (156 hp/192 Nm) paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the Gamma II 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (177 hp/265 Nm) with a seven-speed DCT.

Features-wise, it will come equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, and a Harman Kardon audio system for the higher variants.

Safety systems will include Forward-Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance (RCCA), and more.

Finally, DJM will offer a five-year warranty and a complimentary five-year service package.

Govt to continue providing incentives for EV charging infrastructure development

The government has stated that incentives for the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure will continue, even though these incentives were not specifically mentioned in Budget 2025.

According to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), among the incentives are Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) programme, which allows charging point operators (CPOs) who meet the tax incentive criteria to receive a 100% tax exemption in the form of an Investment Tax Allowance for five years.

This allowance can be used to offset up to 100% of statutory income for each tax assessment year.

“In addition, incentives in the form of income tax exemptions are also being offered to companies manufacturing EV charging equipment in the form of a full income tax exemption on statutory income from the assessment year 2023 until the assessment year 2032,” MITI said.

The ministry said this in a written reply on the Parliament website on Monday in response to a question from Tan Kok Wai (PH-Cheras) regarding the specific allocations for EV charging infrastructure development in the current budget.

MITI also said the government expects the total number of electric-powered vehicles (xEV) on the road to reach at least 400,000 passenger and commercial vehicles by 2030.

As of 30 September, the total annual sales rate for vehicles, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), stood at 33,319 units. The overall figure for 2023 was 35,723 units.

Meanwhile, to support the development of EV charging bays (EVCB), the ministry noted that Petronas subsidiary Gentari and Tenaga Nasional Bhd have committed to making investments and had spent approximately RM76 million up to June 2024.

With the significant financial involvement of both companies, more EVCBs are expected to be built across Malaysia, supported by other CPOs that also provide EV charging services to the public.

“This positive development has helped boost the confidence of EV enthusiasts in purchasing and using these vehicles,” MITI added.

Hyundai Elantra N TCR Edition – from the track to the street

Thanks to its aggressive styling and an exhaust that pops and bangs everytime you lift your foot from the throttle, the Hyundai Elantra N certainly stands out, even in its standard guise.

However, perhaps sensing that the high-performance sedan still has room for improvement, the Korean automaker has unveiled the Elantra N TCR Edition.

Inspired by the race cars competing in the TCR World Tour, the Elantra N TCR Edition comes with multiple upgraded performance parts.

The most notable addition is of course the carbon swan neck spoiler, which is adjustable to provide optimal downforce settings for various driving conditions and preferences.

On top of that, the Elantra N TCR Edition features lightweight 19-inch forged wheels that are highly rigid. Hidden behind these wheels is the Hyundai’s N Performance four-piston braking system.

For some reason, the TCR Edition’s striking blue, red, and white livery, with an oversized ‘N’, is exclusively available in the South Korean market.

Inside, the cabin boasts an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, adorned with a Performance Blue 12 o’clock marker, matching Performance Blue seat belts, and an exclusive TCR Edition badging.

The engine remains untouched. Like the standard version, the Elantra N TCR Edition delivers 280 PS and 392 Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Elantra N is offered with two transmission options: an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and a six-speed manual. Official images released by Hyundai show the DCT variant, but it remains uncertain whether the manual option will be available for this special edition.

The Elantra N TCR Edition is set to launch in South Korea this December, with a global rollout anticipated next year.

Foul stench in car leads to discovery of unwelcome visitors

Cars have a great amount of small and cramped spaces that can easily serve as hiding spots for various unwelcome creatures and critters.

Animals getting inside a vehicle is a pretty common occurrence yet in many cases, vehicle owners remain unaware until a foul smell begins to permeate the inside of their vehicle.

Such was the experience of a woman in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, not long ago. In a TikTok video uploaded by Baihaki Automotive, it was said that this woman had visited their workshop to investigate the source of an unpleasant odour in her car.

According to the video, the stench was so nauseating that one of the workshop staff nearly fainted from it.

This, however, did not deter them from uncovering the source of the smell. After two days of dismantling the poor car, they finally discovered the true origin of the repugnant aroma.

It turned out that a family of squirrels had made themselves quite comfortable, nesting within the left side of the car’s frame. They had to use a borescope camera just to have a peek into the space.

Baihaki Automotive revealed that the unpleasant smell was actually caused by a decomposing squirrel left in that confined area.

Such unfortunate incidents can happen to anyone, especially those who leave their cars parked outside their homes.

Fortunately, there are several steps that can be taken to prevent such occurrences. These include parking your car in a garage, closing all windows securely, and ensuring that no rubbish or food is left inside the vehicle.

Honda says the 2026 Passport is its most off-road capable SUV ever

Honda may not be the first brand that springs to mind when discussing off-road vehicles, but the company is hoping to change it with the all-new fourth-generation Passport.

Much like its predecessors, the Passport will be exclusively available in the North American market. For the 2026 model year, it will be offered in three distinct variants, RTL, TrailSport, and TrailSport Elite, with prices starting from the mid-$40,000s (approximately RM178,708).

Each variant boasts a unique appearance. The RTL features sleek black trim and grille, a roof spoiler, and a silver skid garnish front and rear. It rides on 18-inch Gloss Shark Gray wheels fitted with 265/60 R18 all-season tyres.

In contrast, the TrailSport and TrailSport Elite present a more rugged aesthetic, equipped with exclusive off-road hardware such as bright orange heavy-duty recovery hooks, thick steel skid plates, and General Grabber all-terrain tyres in a size of 275/60 R18.

When compared to the third-generation model, the new Passport’s wheelbase has been extended (+2.75 inches) for better ride comfort, alongside wider tracks (+1.3 inches at the front and +1.5 inches at the rear) that contribute to improve cornering stability.

What’s particularly noteworthy is the matte black finish of the rear roof section, which is there to enable owners to lean skis, fishing poles and other equipment without fretting over scratches or damage.

Inside, Honda describes the Passport as perfectly suited for both daily routines and weekend adventures. The RTL variant features luxurious leather upholstery, while the TrailSport variants come with easy-to-clean synthetic leather.

Honda claims the 2026 Passport has the most cargo room in the model’s history, boasting up to 83.5 cubic feet behind the first row and 44 cubic feet behind the second row, which includes a larger redesigned underfloor storage area.

The cargo area is also offers plenty of space for those who enjoy the great outdoors, accommodating full-sized golf bags laid sideways, a large stroller, or two adult mountain bikes (with front wheels removed) when the rear seats are fully folded down.

On the equipment front, the Passport includes a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen—54% larger than its predecessor—featuring Google integration, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Under the hood, the Passport is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine that delivers 285 hp and 355 Nm of torque, representing a 5 hp increase over earlier models. Power is directed to the wheels through a newly fine-tuned 10-speed automatic transmission specifically calibrated for the Passport.

Moreover, this SUV is equipped with the second-generation torque vectoring i-VTM4 all-wheel drive system, capable of handling 40% more torque and providing 30% faster response. This results in optimised traction across various driving scenarios.

Also enhanced is the suspension system, now featuring stronger forged steel suspension arms and cast-iron knuckles, alongside retuned MacPherson and multilink struts for a more confident handling feel. The steering ratio has also been recalibrated to provide quicker response.

Can Nissan Kicks e-Power help Tan Chong get back on its feet? – First impression

The official distributor of Nissan in Malaysia, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM), has been rather quiet in recent years.

The last all-new model launched by the company was the second-generation Almera, which made its debut somewhere late 2020. Since then, it appears as though Nissan has vanished from the radar.

But ETCM appears to be far from defeated; having been the custodian of the Nissan brand in Malaysia for over 60 years, the company is determined to maintain its presence in the market.

The first step in ETCM’s revival strategy is the introduction of the long-awaited B-segment crossover, the Nissan Kicks e-Power.

The Kicks e-Power for the Malaysian market will be fully imported (CBU) from Thailand, which means we will be getting the facelifted version of the first-generation model that was originally launched in The Land of the Smiles four years ago.

While this car may not be the freshest offering on the market, it does present something new for the Nissan brand in Malaysia: the e-Power powertrain.

What’s even more exciting is that this facelifted model features the second-generation e-Power system, which is lighter and more powerful.

But before delving deeper into the e-Power, you might be wondering how big is the Kicks? It measures 4,290 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width, and stands 1,605 mm tall, making it nearly 100 mm shorter than the Honda HR-V.

In terms of design, some say it resembles a mini version of the Nissan X-Trail. Whatever the case is, this writer can’t help but feel that the Kicks appears somewhat ‘aged’ despite yet to hit the market.

Don’t get me wrong; its appearance is certainly appealing, yet it lacks the ‘X’ factor that would make it stand out in a showroom.

As you might already know, beauty, design, and aesthetics are subjective— not everyone desires a flashy car; some prefer a more understated and casual look, which is exactly what the Kicks offers.

The interior of the Kicks is tidy and simple, but much like its exterior, it is starting to show signs of age.

The layout is approximately 95% identical to that of the Almera’s cabin but Kicks comes with a more sophisticated gear knob that feels somewhat awkward to use due to its shape.

The level of standard equipment is decent. The Kicks is fitted with Zero Gravity seats, an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a seven-inch TFT display, three USB ports, and manual adjustments for the driver and front passenger seats.

The top-of-the-range VLT variant adds a premium touch with two-tone leather upholstery adorning the seats and dashboard.

Nevertheless, there are elements that make the Kicks appear and feel somewhat inexpensive, one of which is the hard plastic trim on the door panels. Additionally, the air-conditioning control switches look like it came out 10 years ago and could benefit from a redesign.

Although the wheelbase is 5 mm longer than that of the HR-V, the rear passenger space in the Kicks feels a touch cramped, exacerbated by the somewhat upright seating position.

However, the boot space is fairly generous, offering a capacity of 423 litres. According to Nissan, it can accommodate two standard-sized golf bags, a large suitcase, and a medium-sized luggage. Sounds perfect for a weekend of golf.

The Kicks may have arrived fashionably late to the market, but as this writer has mentioned, it does bring something intriguing to the table: the e-Power powertrain.

So, what exactly is e-Power?

Nissan insists on not labelling it a hybrid, although the system integrates an internal combustion engine (ICE), an electric motor, and a battery. Thus, technically, it is a hybrid.

However, unlike conventional hybrid systems, the ICE in the e-Power setup does not drive the wheels. Its sole purpose is to charge the 2.1 kWh lithium-ion battery located in the middle of the frame. The wheels are powered entirely by the electric motor fed by this battery.

In essence, the wheels are propelled 100% by the electric motor, offering a driving feel akin to that of an electric vehicle, but with the added benefit that you need not worry about charging, ever.

How does it perform in the real world?

As soon as the accelerator pedal is depressed, the car pulls almost instantly and this is done without the roar of an ICE engine familiar in traditional vehicles.

Similar to a real EV, the powertrain delivers responsive acceleration and instant torque, allowing this writer to overtake other vehicles with ease, even when space was limited.

Yet, let’s not set our expectations too high, as the Kicks e-Power’s acceleration won’t melt your face like some high-performance EVs do. It delivers a modest 129 PS and 280 Nm—not particularly impressive, but still adequate to meet the needs of consumers in this segment.

The Kicks e-Power features three driving modes: Normal, Eco, and Sport. In this writer’s experience, the Normal mode is perfectly suitable for everyday driving, while the Sport mode can provide that extra power when needed.

Another advantage of the e-Power system is its single pedal driving capability known as e-Pedal Step. This feature is activated only in Eco and Sport modes, where the regenerative braking force is heightened, allowing the driver to slow down without depressing the brake pedal.

Moreover, with stronger regenerative braking, the battery charges more quickly. With a full battery, the EV mode can be activated, enabling the vehicle to travel up to 2.5 km on electric power at a speed of 40 km/h, with the engine completely turned off.

In addition to its addicting eagerness, the Kicks is a joy to driver, particularly on winding roads. Whatever magic the Nissan engineers have conjured for the suspension tuning, the crossover proves incredibly adept when tackling sharp bends.

Sound, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels are also highly commendable. At higher speeds, wind and tyre noise are effectively suppressed. However, during aggressive acceleration, one may occasionally hear the engine working hard to recharge the battery.

Conclusion

Whether this model will help ETCM back on its feet is still uncertain, but in the Kicks, the company has a solid product, albeit one that is a touch aged.

This writer believes that by hyping up the strengths of e-Power and having an effective pricing strategy, ETCM may well find an opportunity to win back the hearts of consumers in this country.

What is hydroplaning and how you can avoid it

The rainy season has arrived once more, and given the frequency of rainfall over the past few days, it is certain that the roads are always wet and slippery.

Not only that, the presence of water puddles on the road surface can lead to an unwanted phenomenon known as hydroplaning if you are not careful enough.

If you fall victim to hydroplaning, the likelihood of an accident occurring is significantly high, as you will lose control of your vehicle.

In this article, we dive into ways to avoid hydroplaning and what you should do if it happens to you.

But before we go any further, let’s first understand what hydroplaning is. Also known as aquaplaning, it is a condition where the tyres lose contact with the road surface when driving on wet roads.

This occurs when the tyres are unable to disperse water quickly enough, causing water to come in between the tyre surface and the road.

As a result, the tyres cannot grip the road effectively, and you may lose control of your vehicle.

How can hydroplaning be avoided?

First and foremost, ensure that your vehicle’s tyres are in good condition before you start driving. Tread depth plays a vital role in effectively dispersing water, so if the tyres are worn down, the likelihood of hydroplaning increases.

Also, remember to regularly rotate your tyres to ensure they wear evenly.

Don’t forget to check your tyre pressure as well. Excessively high pressure will reduce the contact patch between the tyre and the road, which can certainly increase the risk of hydroplaning.

Additionally, you can reduce the risk by driving more slowly in the rain. If possible, avoid driving through puddles and standing water.

But sometimes things can go wrong unexpectedly. If hydroplaning occurs while you behind the wheel, the first and best thing you can do is to remain calm and not panic.

Next, ease off the accelerator pedal to allow the vehicle to slow down gradually. Though it may sound the most logical thing to do, avoid slamming on the brakes as this can worsen the situation.

Finally, try to control the direction of the car by gently steering. Do not turn the steering wheel aggressively, as this can cause the car to spin.

Nissan Kicks e-Power set for December launch – 2 variants, CBU from Thailand

Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) has unveiled the specifications of the Nissan Kicks e-Power, which is set to launch in the local market this December.

According to ETCM, the B-segment SUV will be available as a fully imported (CBU) model from Thailand and will be offered in two variants, namely VL and VLT.

Both variants feature an e-Power powertrain that combines a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 2.1 kW/h lithium-ion battery. The combination produces a total output of 129 PS and 280 Nm of torque.

Unlike conventional hybrid powertrains, the engine in the e-Power system acts solely as a generator to charge the battery. The power is then sent to the electric motor, which drives the front wheels.

This means the Kicks e-Power is entirely propelled by the electric motor, much like a real electric vehicle, but without the need for external charging.

Fuel efficiency is rated at a 21.7 km/l based on the NEDC cycle, and with a 41-litre fuel tank, the car is said to be capable of achieving a total range of up to 900 km.

In addition to Normal, Sport, and Eco modes, there is also an EV mode where the engine remains completely off, allowing for a driving experience akin to that of a true EV.

However, the mode can only be activated when the battery is fully charged and is limited to a range of 2.5 km due to the small battery size. Also featured is a one-pedal driving system called e-Pedal Step.

In terms of equipment, the Kicks e-Power comes standard with automatic LED headlights, LED fog lights, automatic folding side mirrors, speed-sensing wipers, and a tyre repair kit (no spare tyre included).

Inside, the SUV boasts Zero Gravity seats upholstered in fabric, manual six-way adjustment for the driver’s seat and four-way adjustment for the front passenger seat, an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a seven-inch TFT meter display, and three USB ports.

Safety features include Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control System, Hill Start Assist, Intelligent Driver Alertness, Cruise Control, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Forward Emergency Braking.

Those opting for the VLT variant will enjoy added features such as two-tone leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera, an Intelligent Rear View Mirror, Intelligent Cruise Control, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The Kicks e-Power will be available in five striking colours: Black Star, Sunrise Orange, Brilliant White Pearl, Brilliant Silver, and Red Pearl.

The VLT variant can also be ordered with a Super Black roof for the Sunrise Orange, White Pearl, and Red Pearl colours. Alternatively, buyers can opt for the two-tone Dark Metal Grey.

First locally-assembled Chery Omoda E5 rolls off production line at Kulim plant

Chery Auto Malaysia has announced that it has commenced local assembly operations for the Chery Omoda E5, eight months after it was launched in CBU form. The first unit of the EV has rolled off the production line at the Inokom Plant in Kulim, Kedah.

The accomplishment demonstrates Chery’s commitment to improving local manufacturing capabilities, promoting Malaysia’s industrial growth, and contributing to the country’s transition to a sustainable, electrified automotive future.

The Omoda E5 is the Chery’s fourth vehicle to be assembled in the country, following the Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro, and Omoda 5.

“By assembling our cars locally, it not only allows us to provide more competitive pricing but also signifies Chery’s long-term commitment in Malaysia, fostering job creation and skill development within the local workforce,” said Leo Chen, President of Chery Auto Malaysia.

Leo Chen added that the initiative is in-line with the government’s policy of localisation compliance and will support and assist Malaysia to become a regional hub for electric vehicles.

Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, Group Chief Executive Officer of Sime Darby Berhad said the significant milestone reflects the strengthening partnership and shared vision between Sime Darby and Chery.

“Our expertise spans the entire automotive value chain, and assembly is a crucial area of growth and a key enabler for our Motors division. We look forward to achieving many more milestones together as we expand our facility and reaffirm our commitment to advancing sustainable mobility solutions,” he added.

During the line-off event YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry said, “Chery should be congratulated for the fact that 99% of their assembly workforce here are Malaysians. The industrialisation of Malaysia must mean better jobs and better pay for Malaysians, not more jobs for unskilled foreign workers. Whenever possible, we should automate more and use more technology, instead of hiring unskilled foreign workers.”

He added that, as of 30 September 2024, there were 32,543 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) registered on Malaysian roads. However, 98% of these BEVs are imported as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units.

“With this line-off ceremony, Chery joins the ranks of brands assembling EVs in Malaysia, marking a significant advancement in localizing electric vehicle production.

“Localising as much as possible in terms of manufacturing of vehicles has a balance of payment dimension. In 2023, the automotive sector recorded a total import value of RM62.14 billion, while total export value was RM18.01 billion,” said YB Liew.

Malaysian-made RXZ Twin Boss V2 set to wow crowd at Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show

FNG Works’ RXZ Twin Boss V2 became the talk of Art Of Speed 2024 after clinching both the Jury Pick and Public Choice Award at the Art of Speed Invitational Bike Build Off.

As the overall winner of the build off, the RXZ Twin Boss V2 will be showcased at the 32nd Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show 2024 in Japan, alongside the best custom vehicles from across Japan and the world.

FNG Works is owned and operated by Mohamad Irwann Bin Mohd Azlan. The 33-year-old, affectionately known as Cheng, is a graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from UiTM Shah Alam.

Some of his inspirations come from motorcycles crafted by Khalid “The Rusty Factory”, Omar Jumiran, Padin Musa, Hills Angels, Azizan Rahim, and Acid Welding. As for International builders, Cheng admires the works of Maxwell Hazan, Allen Millyard, Ed Roth, Arlen Ness, and Sure Shot.

The story of the Twin Boss V2 harksback to Art Of Speed 2017 with the debut of the original RXZ Twin Boss. In its V1 design, the Twin Boss was also powered by two Yamaha RXZ 135cc engines but configured with one engine in front of the other and connected at the crank via chain-drive. The original Twin Boss was completed in a ‘Digger’ style and became the lucky draw giveaway prize of AOS 2017.

For the 13th Annual Art Of Speed Malaysia 2024, Cheng took a new and evolved approach for the RXZ Twin Boss V2, this time fully combining two Yamaha RXZ 135cc engines into a single two-cylinder engine.

Cheng explains, “I wanted to create a bike that looks beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. Some might categorise it as a ‘Board Tracker’ or a ‘Land Speed Racer’ style, but I started with two Yamaha RXZ engines that I merged into one unit.

“From there I built a motorcycle around the engine that, in my opinion, has the right proportions and lines. For the final touch I aimed for the highest level of fabrication precision that I could achieve.”

Art Of Speed Malaysia (AOSM) is proud to finance Cheng’s entry for the event, with a budget of RM60,000 to send the bike to Japan, including flight, hotel, transportation, and logistics.

To celebrate this event, the AOS team will be producing a short film to commemorate the RXZ Twin Boss V2’s journey from Ipoh, Malaysia to Yokohama, Japan.

The film project will feature Cheng, together with co-star Farid Nabawi, the Creative Director of AOS. Hanif Sulhi, who won Best Documentary Series Award 2023, Fail Mahkamah TV3, brings his talent in storytelling and will serve as the Director of the short film.

Titled “RXZ Balik Kampung: Dari Ipoh ke Yokohama”, this cohesive, powerful message aims to empower creativity among youth, foster fun, and create unforgettable memories.

The short film will be divided into a series of six episodes, premiering across all AOS social platforms on Christmas Day, 25 December 2024. It will also be submitted for various International Film Festivals, notably the Motorcycle Film Festival (Toronto, Canada), VAHNA Motorcycle Film Festival (USA), and Dubai Motorcycle Film Festival (Dubai).

AOSM believes that Malaysia’s participation in this event will highlight talented Malaysians on a world stage and bring global attention to Malaysia’s creative industry especially in the world of customization.

The AOS team will be in Japan for six days with 15 members to support and cheer on FNG Works.
