Mercedes to stop using EQ for future EV models, revert to traditional naming

MERCEDES is reported to be considering discontinuing the use of the ‘EQ’ name for future fully electric vehicle (EV) models. According to a report by AutoExpress, this step will be taken after the end of life of all current first-generation EVs.

The German manufacturer will return to using traditional naming structures for their non-EV models. Currently, almost all Mercedes EV models have ‘EQ’ in their names, from EQA to EQS.

An exception was made for the G-Class, which was launched in Beijing last month. It was not called EQG as expected, but instead was named G580 with EQ Technology. This signifies a new direction in the naming of the brand’s EV models.

“EQ is a technical beginning, Mercedes-Benz in the future will not become EQ,” said Mercedes’ product manager, Tobi Mantele. “EQ is a technical platform for us. Once you move towards full electrification, you don’t want to undermine a brand like the S-Class, for example,” added another Mercedes spokesperson.

This direction also indicates that Mercedes wants to normalize EV as a regular model line and will use naming conventions similar to petrol and diesel models.

At the same time, Mercedes will not only offer pure EVs, but their electrification will also include plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. “We don’t want to completely eliminate the opportunities with our existing ICE platforms. We have top-performing PHEVs in the range, and we will update them,” said the spokesperson.

Youths who cooked at petrol station in Genting investigated by police

Recently, a video of a group of teenagers gathering and cooking instant noodles at a gas station in Genting Highlands went viral. In response, the police have initiated an investigation.

The District Police Chief of Bentong, Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar, stated that they received reports regarding a video clip showing a group of individuals engaging in this behavior, which circulated on social media.

“The investigation revealed that the video clip was uploaded on May 13 before it went viral on social media platform X. The video, which lasted approximately 50 seconds, depicted a group of vehicle owners cooking at the gas station,” he said in a statement.

He mentioned that a joint operation would be conducted more frequently in the area, especially on weekends and public holidays. Stringent action will be taken against anyone engaging in activities that disrupt public peace.

“The police have received information and complaints that the location in question is often a gathering place for vehicle owners who engage in activities that disturb public peace. An investigation has been opened under Section 268 of the Penal Code (causing public nuisance) and Section 336 of the Penal Code (acts endangering life or personal safety).

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to come forward to assist in the investigation,” he added.

Get up close with GWM Tank 300 on the upcoming Malaysia Autoshow 2024

Great Wall Motor Malaysia has announced that GWM will debut their new SUV, the Tank 300, at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 next week. The GWM Tank 300 was previously showcased a few months ago, but its public debut will take place at the upcoming motor show.

Initially scheduled for release in the third quarter of this year, the latest development indicates an earlier launch in the second quarter. Therefore, it is not far away.

For the Malaysian market, the Tank 300 is expected to be offered in a non-hybrid variant, featuring a 2.0-liter turbo petrol 4-cylinder engine generating 217hp and 380Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a part-time all-wheel-drive system with 2H, 4H, and 4L functions. The system is also equipped with front and rear differential locks.

Notably, the GWM Tank 300 features a ‘tank turn’ function. When activated, it locks the inner rear tires to enable the SUV to make tight turns in confined spaces. This maneuver is reminiscent of tracked vehicles such as tanks and excavators.

As can be seen, the SUV presents a classic 4×4 appearance with a boxy design and thick side cladding. Its front end boasts round LED headlights, while fog lights are integrated into the bumper.

At the rear, there’s a spare tire mounted on the outside of the swinging door, reminiscent of classic Jeeps. The Tank 300 comes with 18-inch rims and Michelin Primacy SUV tires.

Internally, you’ll notice that the interior exudes a premium feel, possibly inspired by the Mercedes G-Class. With a vertical dashboard, turbine air vents, front passenger grab handle, and a pair of 12.3-inch screens each.

The center console of the Tank 300 houses a slightly angular-shaped gear lever with control buttons for the drive system, electronic parking brake, and driver assistance system. Other features include automatic air conditioning, power seats, leather upholstery, Harman Infinity audio system, power sunroof, wireless charging pad, and paddle shifters.

The GWM Tank 300 also comes equipped with active safety systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Furthermore, Great Wall Motor Malaysia will also showcase another upcoming SUV, the Haval H6 HEV. These models can be viewed at Hall A, MAEPS, Serdang during the Malaysia Autoshow 2024, running from 22nd to 26th May.

Got a lemon car? Here’s what you can do through consumer tribunal

IT can be frustating when our newly purchased car still smells like a store and is already problematic. To worsen the situation, if the manufacturer or sales representative refuses to take responsibility, we feel like “rubbing salt into the wound.”

Do not worry, do not feel alone. Did you know that you can actually report or file a claim with the Consumer Claims Tribunal?

Many may have heard about this tribunal, but do they know how to actually file a claim? As consumers or buyers, we have our own rights under the law.

So in this article, let’s look at some frequently asked questions about the consumer tribunal and how you can assert your rights as an aggrieved buyer.

The objective of the Consumer Claims Tribunal, according to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs website, is as follows:

  1. To provide an alternative forum to the civil court for consumers to make compensation claims related to goods or services affordably, easily, and quickly.
  2. To hear and adjudicate claims freely, fairly, and impartially.
  3. To develop laws regarding consumer protection.

How do you make a claim if the car or product you bought has issues that are not your fault? There are two ways, either personally go to any Consumer Claims Tribunal counter nationwide, or file online through the portal https://ttpm.kpdn.gov.my. Each application filed will incur a fee of RM5.00.

According to the website, the tribunal has the authority to hear:

  1. Claims for compensation for purchases of goods and services allowed under the tribunal’s jurisdiction as specified under Act 599;
  2. Claims with amounts not exceeding RM50,000.00; and
  3. Claims accrued within three years from the claim.

Does the tribunal have legal authority to investigate consumer complaints? The Consumer Claims Tribunal does not have the legal authority under Act 599 to act on any complaints. The tribunal is an alternative forum to the civil court for consumers to bring compensation claims against sellers/manufacturers and service providers for purchases allowed under Act 599.

What is a judicial review? Every award made by the Tribunal under subsections 112(2) and 107(3) of Act 599 is final and binding on all parties to the proceedings as stated under section 116 of Act 599. However, parties dissatisfied with the tribunal’s award may apply for a Judicial Review at the High Court.

We hope the information we have shared can help you to some extent if you are facing consumer issues. Let’s fight for our rights as consumers together!

2025 Kia EV6 to get bigger battery, 10-80% charging in 18 minutes only

The first Kia EV, the EV6, has been in the global market since 2021, and now over 210,000 units have been sold. Kia is now set to introduce the first update or facelift for this model.

It will still come in standard and GT Line options, with the GT Line featuring a new front light bar. Both variants will also showcase a new front bumper, along with the choice of 19- and 20-inch rims.

The cabin space doesn’t seem to have changed much, but upon closer inspection, the steering wheel now sports a new three-blade design, alongside a new dual-screen setup.

It will include fingerprint recognition, a 12-inch head-up display, and a digital rearview mirror. The main update for this facelift is the larger battery.

The 2025 Kia EV6 will receive an 84kWh capacity pack, replacing the previous 77.4kWh. It can also be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes, with a 350kW capacity.

The EV6 Long Range rear-wheel-drive variant also offers a longer driving range of 494km. Another update is in the unseen areas. The EV6 will be equipped with side airbags for rear passengers, as well as larger B-pillars for enhanced body rigidity.

The electric motor is said to be quieter, and comfort has been improved through new shock absorber tuning. Kia has also added sound insulation materials to the rear motor area.

Lastly, the OTA (over-the-air) updates can now cover more than just navigation functions, with wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity becoming standard features.

smart #3 tested ahead of 21 May unveiling, here’s our verdict

Recently, smart Malaysia conducted a preview session for its latest model, the smart #3, exclusively at the Pro-Net headquarters. We had the opportunity to get a closer look and even test drive the smart #3 on the Proton test circuit in Shah Alam. But first, a little background.

Background

For those who are uninitiated, smart is now owned by Geely and Mercedes-Benz, focusing solely on producing fully electric vehicles (EVs) at the moment.

The smart #3 is not just a sportier coupe version of the #1; it comes with several technical differences. Firstly, it is built on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform shared with the #1 and several models under the Geely group.

In broad terms, the smart #3 is longer and wider than the #1 but lower, with approximately an 80mm difference between the two. Therefore, theoretically, the smart #3 is expected to offer more stable handling, right? We’ll discuss this further.

Unique features of smart #3

One distinctive feature of the smart #3 is its curved coupe-style roof, unlike the straight roof of the #1. The roof of the smart #3 has unique color play on the A-pillar and C-pillar, giving it a ‘floating roof’ effect.

Other features include front and rear LED lights, flush door handles, frameless windows, and illuminated logos. The smart #3 is also more aerodynamic than the #1, with a drag coefficient of 0.27 (0.29 for the #1).

Specification details

The lineup offers variants similar to the smart #1: Pro, Premium, and Brabus. The Pro variant has a 49kWh battery, while the Premium and Brabus variants come with a 66kWh battery.

The Pro and Premium variants have a single rear electric motor with an output of 272hp and 343Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 acceleration in 5.8 seconds.

On the other hand, the smart #3 features two motors on the front and rear axles, delivering a total power of 428hp and 543Nm of torque.

As the #3 Brabus is an AWD vehicle, its 0-100 acceleration is much quicker, around 3.7 seconds. The maximum speed for all variants is 180km/h, with a driving range of approximately 455km for Pro and Premium, and 415km for Brabus.

Initial impressions

So, how was the initial drive of the smart #3? From our experience on Proton’s high-speed oval track, the smart #3 accelerates smoothly.

The Premium variant reaching 100km/h in 5.8 seconds is more than sufficient. Imagine cruising this smart #3 on the highway; a smooth acceleration means easier lane changes and smoother traffic flow. Agree?

We also tested the dynamics at Pro-Net’s provided dynamic section, including figure-8, slalom, and straight-line acceleration. The smart #3’s chassis felt sturdier and agile due to its stiffer springs, shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars compared to the #1, giving it a sportier character.

The technical changes seem crucial and complement the sporty appearance of the #3. Turning in the figure-8 felt stable, with smooth torque delivery at low speeds.

This makes it suitable for everyday city driving by regular motorists. Among our experiences, the slalom tested the chassis stability, tire grip limits, and power delivery. The smart #3 easily reaches grip limits due to its rapid torque delivery, following your right foot’s commands.

However, the safety systems and strengthened chassis ensure the car remains in control and assists the driver in navigating through various situations. Body roll is noticeably reduced, making the smart #3 more nimble and agile when changing directions while accelerating and braking.

Overall, the smart #3 exhibits a distinct character compared to the #1, suitable for young buyers seeking an enjoyable EV for daily driving. Stay tuned for our extensive daily test drive report in both city and long-distance driving once we receive the smart #3 test unit shortly.

In the meantime, you can visit the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 from May 22 to May 26, 2024, as the smart #3 will make its debut appearance there. smart Malaysia representatives will be at Hall A2 (Premium Hall), MAEPS, Serdang.

RMAF to negotiate with Kuwait for F/A-18 Hornet

THE Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will be sending a team to Kuwait to negotiate the acquisition of F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets from the country.

Air Force Chief, General Tan Sri Mohd. Asghar Khan Goriman Khan, stated that a technical visit to the country will take place soon, with the executing team to be formed next month.

“Possibly in June (the visit), God willing, we will establish a team to carry out the technical visit there. Through this visit, the government and RMAF will decide on the number of Hornet aircraft to be acquired to strengthen the country’s air defense,” he said after presiding over the Conclusion Parade of the Young Airmen Training at the Air Force Academy recently.

Mohd. Asghar Khan mentioned that RMAF currently operates eight F/A-18D Hornet aircraft from the United States purchased in 1995 and started operating two years later.

“Kuwait has 39 Hornet aircraft with two-seater and single-seater variants. From this visit, we will determine the required number. If the visit yields positive results until 2035, RMAF may decide to purchase them,” he said.

Kuwait is set to retire the aircraft purchased in 1991 and replace them with more modern fighter jets.

RMAF has shown interest in acquiring Hornets from Kuwait since late 2021, considering the good condition of the fighter jet fleet and their relatively low flight hours. Let’s hope this process goes smoothly, and RMAF can strengthen their fleet.

Tamiya showcases real-life Lunchbox monster van at Shizuoka Hobby Show

As fans of vehicle toys, we often imagine what it would be like to drive that car in the real world. One way to make this a reality is by producing the vehicle in a 1/1 scale size.

This is exactly what Tamiya did recently. The toy manufacturer unveiled a full-sized Lunchbox to be showcased at the Shizuoka Hobby Show 2024, which took place recently.

No technical details were disclosed, but this monster van bears a striking resemblance to the 1/12 scale radio-controlled (RC) version.

The real Lunchbox comes in the iconic yellow color, with a front bumper bar, chrome grille and exhaust, “Vanessa’s Lunchbox” graphics on the side, and even a wheelie bar at the back, mirroring the RC version.

What’s most amusing is the battery pack found underneath the chassis, even though the actual truck surely runs on a petrol engine.

The only difference is the tires, which are not the giant monster truck ones. Instead, the real version uses regular off-road tires, and its chassis looks like a four-wheel-drive (4WD) drive when looking at the front and rear axles.

The 1/12 scale RC version is rear-wheel-drive (RWD) with a motor at the back. Despite this, the real version retains its height, ensuring that Tamiya RC fans will recognize it immediately.

Tamiya has previously produced a full-sized Monster Beetle model, and an external company once offered the Wild One MAX buggy.

Ferrari 12Cilindri: A powerhouse with disappointing name

THE Ferrari 12Cilindri, while packing a punch with its powerful engine, falls short in the nomenclature department. The name does not do justice to its remarkable performance.

The 12Cilindri proudly boasts a 6.5-liter naturally-aspirated V12 engine, generating an impressive 819hp and 678Nm of torque.

Placed in a front-mid configuration with a characteristic long front hood, it embodies the classic Ferrari aesthetic. The front-mid configuration, positioned ahead of the cabin but behind the front axle, ensures optimal balance.

This V12 unit has a longstanding heritage, dating back to the Enzo. Remarkably, the 12Cilindri achieves stringent standards without hybrid assistance or electrification. This allows the engine to deliver its peak power with unadulterated sound and force.

The V12 engine incorporates Aspirated Torque Shaping technology, utilizing electronics to modulate torque delivery in gears three and four. Paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox located at the rear for weight distribution, it boasts a 30% faster gear shift compared to its predecessor, the 812.

Ferrari claims the 12Cilindri accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds and achieves 200km/h in under 7.9 seconds. The Spider variant, slightly less swift, accomplishes 0 to 100km/h in 2.95 seconds and reaches 200km/h in 8.2 seconds. Both models boast a top speed exceeding 340km/h.

The Ferrari 12Cilindri is equipped with advanced chassis control systems, including Side Slip Control 8, four-wheel steering, a choice of 20 or 21-inch rims, and Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport tires. The chassis is also 15% stiffer than its predecessor, the 812.

As expected, the 12Cilindri comes with a high price tag, retailing at USD423,000 (RM2.006 million) for the coupe and USD466,000 (RM2.209 million) for the Spider. Given Ferrari’s high demand for V12 engines, these models are likely to be quickly sold out.

In conclusion, while the Ferrari 12Cilindri impresses with its power and performance, its nomenclature may not reflect its true capabilities. However, it is anticipated that the allure of Ferrari’s V12 engines will continue to drive strong consumer demand.

Malaysia’s Hayden Haikal won first GT4 race in Thailand Super Series

Malaysia’s Hayden Haikal proved he has what it takes to move up the ranks in the Thailand Super Series Championship when he raced to victory in his first ever drive in a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT4. His victory also gave the newly-minted Racing Aurora – a Malaysian team – its first GT4 Class and international win.

The 19-year-old completed the 1-hour + 1 lap race around the 4.554km Chang International Circuit, 26 seconds clear of his nearest contender K. Kantadhee in a Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport.

Having competed and finishing third in the Super Eco Class 30 minutes earlier, Hayden joined The Super Series Supercar GT4 race 27 minutes after the start, taking over from his Racing Aurora team mate Peter Hackett at the mid-point compulsory driver change. Up to that point, Kantadhee had been in the lead with an 8-second advantage.

In a series of events that unfolded during the stop, AAS Motorport’s Kantadhee was held back in the pit as mechanics worked to remove a delaminated wrap on his bonnet, while another contender, the ZW Zoomies pair of P. Prakhun and A. Warren in another Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport was slapped with a 2-second stop-and-go penalty for breaching the minimum pit stop time limit.

Unaware of these incidents, Hayden piled on the pressure at the head of the GT4 pack gradually extending his lead from a mere 8 seconds to finish well clear of any opposition.

“Pulling double duty (competing in the Super Eco and GT4 Class) and to come away with my first race win in GT4 is just a phenomenal feeling and I would like to thank Peter (Hackett), Racing Aurora and sponsors for making all of this possible,” said Hayden.

“I look forward to this being the start of a strong season ahead for both the team and I.”

2024 Porsche Panamera now in Malaysia, features 2.9 V6, matrix LED, from RM1.3 mil

The new third-generation Porsche Panamera has now arrived in Malaysia, brought exclusively by Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP). This four-door sports sedan is offered at a starting price of RM1.3 million. Let’s see what you can get for this price.

This new Panamera is powered by a 2.9-liter V6 twin-turbo petrol engine capable of producing 353PS and 500Nm of torque. This represents an increase of 23PS and 50Nm compared to its predecessor.

With this output, the 2024 Porsche Panamera can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds, with a top speed of 272km/h if given sufficient space.

In addition to being faster, braking performance has also been enhanced. Manufactured in Leipzig, Germany, this sedan is equipped with 360mm brakes with 6 pistons at the front and 330mm with 4 pistons at the rear. The electric booster in the braking system has been upgraded for better feel and precision.

The car features 19-inch rims wrapped in 265/45 tires at the front and 295/40 at the rear. The Panamera 2024 comes with a dual-chamber air suspension system with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard. This system can absorb impacts from uneven roads while ‘holding’ the car body for dynamic driving on the track. Rear-wheel steering can also be added for more precise handling.

Externally, the 2024 Porsche Panamera is equipped with matrix LED headlights with 32,000 pixels each, providing precise illumination up to 600 meters.

Inside the cabin, the Panamera has a design that Porsche describes as “balancing digital and analog control elements”. Essential controls are placed within the driver’s reach, while the gear lever is now located on the steering column.

There are two main displays on the dashboard, a 12.6-inch curved screen in front of the driver, and a 12.6-inch touch screen in the center. Additionally, there is a third 10.9-inch screen in front of the front passenger.

Technological features in the Panamera include the MyPorsche app (iOS only), Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity, massage seats, ambient lighting, Siri voice assistance, and enhanced driving assistance features.
