Volvo EX90 will have a battery passport system where you can check battery health level

The electric SUV Volvo EX90 had already been officially launched at the end of 2022, but production of the model will only begin in South Carolina, United States, this month.

The production delay is due to the complexity of the LIDAR system that will be incorporated into the Volvo EX90. However, one thing is certain, the Volvo EX90 will be the world’s first car to have its own battery passport system.

This documentation system will record all essential information about the battery pack, including the origin of raw materials, components, recycled content, and the overall carbon footprint.

This passport will also record current information regarding the battery health for up to 15 years. This is crucial for customers in determining the current value of an EV, especially as the Volvo EX90 begins to enter the used vehicle market.

Volvo took over five years to develop this passport system in collaboration with the UK startup company Circulor, with an expected cost of approximately $10 (RM47) per vehicle.

In addition to the Volvo EX90, this battery passport will be expanded for use in other Volvo EVs. According to a Reuters report, every EV sold in Europe will be required to have a battery passport starting in February 2027.

Bugatti to reveal new V16 engine in June 20, a hybrid with up to 1,800hp

IN this era of electrification, as we can see, many manufacturers are starting to offer fully electric (EV) or hybrid models.

Bugatti is also making an impression, but they seem to not be ready for EVs, opting instead for the hybrid route. With a name like Bugatti, you can certainly expect it to be no ordinary hybrid.

Indeed, it is a hybrid with a V16 engine package capable of delivering up to 1,800hp of peak power. This engine will be unveiled to the world on June 20th.

It is a naturally-aspirated (NA) engine, unlike the quad-turbo engines found in the Veyron and Chiron models. The V16, which will replace the W16, is a hybrid with three electric motors – two on the front axle, one at the rear.

The rear electric motor will also be housed in an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Rumors suggest that this engine has a displacement of 8.3 liters, able to rev up to 9,500rpm and generate up to 1,000hp.

The electric motors contribute additional power, resulting in a total output of 1,800hp. We already know that Bugatti is set to launch the successor to the Chiron this year.

Therefore, this engine is sure to be the heart of this upcoming new hypercar. According to Bugatti, the hypercar is being “completely designed from the ground up.” It draws inspiration from past models such as the Type 57 C Atlantic, Type 41 Royale, and Type 35.

The hypercar is also expected to accelerate to 100km/h in less than two seconds, reach 200km/h in five seconds, and achieve 300km/h in under 10 seconds. The top speed is limited to 446km/h.

It is said that only 250 units will be produced. This is more exclusive compared to the Veyron and Chiron, with 450 and 500 units produced respectively.

Perodua might need a third factory for its EV production

PERODUA is currently evaluating the construction of a new plant by 2025 to support the production of the new generation Myvi, as reported by Wapcar.

As you might have known, the new generation Myvi will also feature a fully electric (EV) variant.

At present, Perodua operates two plants located in Rawang. The first plant, Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PMSB), currently produces Alza, Aruz, and Myvi, along with the Toyota Veloz under contract.

The second plant, Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PGMSB), currently manufactures Axia, Bezza, and Ativa. The third plant is referred to as the ‘BEV plant’ for electric battery vehicles.

At the same time, Perodua is exploring other options. An alternate plan is to collaborate with other manufacturers on a contract basis.

Speaking during the public unveiling of the Perodua EMO-1 concept last week, its President and CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said, “I cannot disrupt the current plants. They are operating at over 300,000 units (per year).”

“As I mentioned earlier, our target is to produce around 340,000 to 350,000 units. This already exceeds our normal capacity.

“So, I cannot disrupt the current plants. This EV (battery) is something we have to consider to build a new plant, or seek a partner, who has the capability in Malaysia to enable us to carry out the installations,” he added.

The new generation Perodua BEV is being developed independently, without technical assistance from Daihatsu.

Starting from scratch, this project is being carried out in collaboration with three local universities and electric vehicle conversion experts from Australia, namely EV North.

Led by chief engineer, Puan Jehan Adnan, this project utilizes a prototype with support from 60 local vendors, ensuring that Malaysia has a supply chain for domestic EV production.

Based on the Myvi, this prototype is equipped with a 55.7kWh battery pack giving it a driving range of up to 350km.

It features a single electric motor at the front wheel with an output of 161hp and 220Nm of torque.

It is understood that the first Perodua EV model is planned to be launched by the end of 2025 with a price not exceeding RM100,000.

Toyota GR Supra production to end in 2026, Magna Steyr plant lays off 500 workers – report

THIS is an unpleasant news, as you only have a two-year window to acquire a Toyota GR Supra grand tourer model before production ceases in 2026.

This is due to reports from Automobilwoche stating that vehicle manufacturer Magna Steyr, based in Graz, Austria, will lay off approximately 500 workers after the production of several key models like the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, and the Fisker Ocean comes to an end.

For your information, the same factory is also utilized to assemble the non-identical twin models BMW Z4 and Toyota GR Supra since 2019. Carscoops quoted Vice President of Toyota Motor North America, Dave Christ, who explained, “we collaborated with BMW, and it has been a success.”

He further added, “we will reassess the situation going forward. I think, if we want to build something, we will think about how to do it.” These statements suggest that Toyota is likely to develop a new generation of the GR Supra independently or potentially engage in a partnership with a different manufacturer.

The Toyota GR Supra is a high-performance mass-produced car created by Toyota Gazoo Racing, following its previous offerings of limited production models under the sub-brand GRMN (Gazoo Racing Meister of Nurburgring).

It comes in two engine versions, a 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 258 hp and 400 Nm, or a 3.0-liter inline-six engine generating up to 382 hp and 500 Nm, powering the rear wheels.

Initially, the GR Supra was only available in an automatic version, with a specially developed manual transmission becoming available in 2022, limited to inline-6 engine Supra models.

Porsche 911 hybrid arrives – Carrera GTS guise, 3.6-litre, 0-100 in 2.9s

THIS is big news. Despite only a facelift, the Porsche 911 is now entering a new era. This is because the sports car has received a hybrid for the first time in its history.

As we reported earlier, the Porsche 911 will become a hybrid, and it arrives to update the 992 generation (called 992.2) in the Carrera GTS variant.

For 2025, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS retains its identity with the rear-mounted flat-six engine, but now with an electric motor and an electric turbocharger. This boosts power to 532hp and 608Nm of torque.

The engine used is a new 3.6-liter unit replacing the previous 3.0-liter one. This engine alone produces 478hp and 569Nm of torque. The hybrid system replaces the previous twin-turbo package with a single electric turbocharger.

It functions like a traditional exhaust-gas turbocharger but with an 11kW (14.7hp) motor positioned between the turbine and the compressor. This motor can spin the turbo very quickly for a fast response, drastically reducing turbo lag. It can also send power back to the 400-volt battery.

There is also a generator motor of 32.6hp sandwiched between the flat-six engine and the 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Both are powered by a very small 1.9kWh battery located under the front hood.

The T-Hybrid powertrain is designed to enhance performance at all rpm ranges while operating at the ideal air-fuel ratio of 14.7:1 at almost all times. This hybrid also means no more manual transmission for the 911 Carrera GTS.

This new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is heavier than the previous model, partly due to standard features like rear-wheel steering, but the additional power overcomes this weight increase. It is also the first Carrera GTS capable of accelerating to 100km/h in less than 3 seconds, specifically 2.9 seconds.

In addition to the T-Hybrid, the 2025 Carrera GTS receives a new active aerodynamic flap at the front for better cooling without compromising drag. There are also cosmetic changes on the front and rear, as well as new wheel options.

The rear tires are wider now, measuring 315/30/21, while the front remains at 245/35/20. Inside, the biggest change is the fully digital instrument cluster. Yes, no more analog tachometer needle.

The base 911 (992) Carrera 2025 receives turbos and an intercooler from previous GTS and Turbo models. This provides an additional 9hp while torque remains at 448Nm.

For 2025, only the Carrera and Carrera GTS receive facelifts, while other variations such as Turbo, GT3, GT3 RS, and GT2 will follow later. The Porsche 911 992.2 2025 is expected to arrive towards the end of this year.

Application for RM200 monthly diesel subsidy opens today

Application for the Subsidy Assistance Program BUDI MADANI, involving private diesel vehicle owners, small farmers, and small commodity planters, will open today (May 28, 2024).

Qualified recipients will receive BUDI MADANI assistance of RM200 per month in line with the implementation of diesel subsidy distribution.

Second Finance Minister, Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said, private diesel vehicle owners meeting specific eligibility criteria can apply under the BUDI Individual category.

While small farmers and small planters can apply under the BUDI Agri-Commodity category.

“The follow-up implementation statement to the Prime Minister’s National Address by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week regarding the Cabinet’s decision to implement diesel fuel subsidy distribution involving consumers in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

For the BUDI Individual category, applicants must be Malaysian citizens, own registered private diesel vehicles with the Road Transport Department besides luxury vehicles under 10 years old.

The owned vehicles must have active road tax and individual or spouse annual income of RM100,000 and below.

As for the BUDI Agri-Commodity category, applicants must be registered as small farmers or planters with relevant agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) or the Ministry of Agriculture and Commodities (KPK).

Applicants should be active commodity small farmers or planters with annual agricultural sales between RM50,000 and RM300,000.

“Each application received will be cross-checked with data under the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDNM) to exclude luxury vehicle owners under 10 years old and high-income individuals (T20),” he said.

Applications can be made online at the website https://budimadani.gov.my, which will be open throughout the year.

For applications made and approved before June 3, the first BUDI MADANI will be received by mid-June, with subsequent assistance distributed monthly.

BMW Concept Skytop features design traits from Z8 and 503

BMW enjoys showcasing their new cars at the Villa d’Este event. This year, they revealed the Skytop, a two-seater convertible that is said to be inspired by the Z8 and 503.

“BMW Concept Skytop is a unique model with an exotic design, following the tradition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design.

“It offers a combination of dynamic and elegant driving at the highest level, following previous models such as the Z8 or BMW 503.”

The relationship between the Concept Skytop and the Z8 is quite evident. The slim taillights with a shark-like nose are a clear inspiration from the early 2000s roadster. The sculpted hood design, small front lights, and upright rear deck also remind us of the 503 from the 1950s.

BMW did not provide any details or performance specifications, but if guessed, it might use a 4.4-liter V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive from the M8 Competition.

The theme, like the M8, continues to the interior. The dashboard seems to be taken directly from the 8-Series, with a digital instrument display, infotainment, and a central console as we usually see.

But the unique roll bar behind the seats looks truly exceptional for this concept, featuring a power window. The roof is also with a two-part mechanism that can be manually removed and stored in the trunk.

Although the Skytop looks like a concept that makes sense to be realized, we don’t feel it will be released officially.

BMW already has the 8-Series coupe and convertible, so there’s certainly no reason to produce a targa version like this, even though it looks so cool.

Kia EV3 made global debut – Up to 600km range, Volvo EX30 rival?

KIA continues to expand their lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) with the introduction of the EV3, a compact SUV. This model joins the existing lineup, including the EV5, EV6, and EV9.

The Kia EV3 is built on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) but does not feature the 800-volt architecture found in the EV6 and EV9. Instead, it comes with a 400-volt architecture similar to the EV5, enabling DC charging from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes.

With a full charge, it can be driven up to 600km based on WLTP cycle. This range applies to the Long Range model, while the Standard Range variant offers a slightly shorter distance.

Power is supplied by nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, known for offering better power and longer lifespan.

Both variants are equipped with the same electric motor, mounted on the front axle. This motor has an output of 201hp and 283Nm of torque, allowing the EV3 to accelerate to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds. The maximum speed is limited to 170km/h.

The Kia EV3 is equipped with eDTVC (Electric Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control) for optimal grip, as well as a new feature called i-Pedal 3.0, which functions as regenerative braking.

The EV3 offers a cargo space of 460 liters, and since it has no engine, it also has an additional 25 liters of space under the front hood.

In terms of appearance, the Kia EV3 features the ‘Tiger Face Star Map’, a result of the design of the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) and main headlights. The grille also comes in two different bumper design options, depending on the variant.

Despite its boxy and angular shape, the Kia EV3 maintains aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient as low as 0.263.

The cabin design showcases a minimalist concept. There is a single horizontal air vent, dividing the dashboard into two sections. Several physical buttons are located on the center console.

The screen on the dashboard is quite large, consisting of a 12.3-inch instrument display, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, and a 5-inch air conditioning panel.

Some parts of the cabin are made from recycled materials, with the option of Air, Earth, or Water trim.

Other features include the Harman Kardon audio system, AI assistance, Automotive Content Platform, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Renault-Volkswagen low-cost EV is not happening

With the abundance of affordable electric vehicles (EV) from China, European manufacturers are beginning to feel worried.

Renault took the initiative to collaborate with Volkswagen in this competition, but it seems unsuccessful. The jointly developed low-cost EV will not be continued.

Renault’s CEO, Luca de Meo, stated that the discussions between the two parties have ended. He described the project as a “lost opportunity,” but mentioned that Renault is still open to cooperation with other manufacturers: “Maybe there are others.”

VW declined to comment, but it is confirmed that the two automotive giants will not continue their collaboration. Meanwhile, Renault will continue to produce the new generation Twingo, expected to arrive in 2026.

The current generation Twingo is still available, with options for traditional engines and EV. The upcoming new generation model will only be offered as an EV, with an expected price of less than €20,000 (RM101,965). On VW’s front, their plans after concluding discussions with Renault are still unclear.

Currently, the German manufacturer has the compact EV ID.3. The successor to the e-up! is also in development, expected to arrive in 2027, possibly named ID.1.

Volvo introduces first EV bus for Malaysia, Rapid KL to conduct testing operation

VOLVO Buses, a part of the Volvo Group, together with Gemilang International Ltd, has launched a fully electric bus (EV).

The all-new Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range is a premium low-floor urban electric bus with two doors, the first of its kind assembled in the country (CKD) by Volvo.

The manufacturer has also collaborated with Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd for the trial operation of the Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range.

The trial is set to commence in July 2024 and is expected to last for a minimum of six months to a year.

A Volvo electric bus will operate on Route 581, covering the journey from Desa Tasik to LRT Bandar Tasik Selatan.

The chassis and powertrain components with efficient energy from Volvo BZL have been engineered and built to the highest standards at Volvo’s manufacturing plant in Sweden.

This bus can accommodate up to 91 passengers with a capacity of 33 seats, including safety seats, seats for specific groups, foldable seats, and standing passenger space.

It features a completely flat and low floor design from the front to the back, providing stability and easier access for passengers.

An electric powertrain system with a power output of 540hp and immediate torque.

The EV bus is also equipped with various advanced braking technologies, including Volvo disc brakes, Electronic Brake System (EBS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Acceleration Slip Regulator (ASR), Brake Blending, Hill Assist System (HAS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Additionally, other safety features such as warning alerts, collision warnings, 360 cameras, and e-mirrors to assist the driver will be offered as options.

In the event of an unlikely breakdown, the battery cells and surrounding area are designed to ‘self-extinguish’ by automatically releasing temperature extinguishing agents to prevent nearby battery cells from damage. This feature has been proven effective through repeated testing.

The Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range electric bus offers flexible charging through the OppCharge interface hardware for automatic high-power charging and CCS charging sockets.

The energy storage is placed on the roof, providing more spacious passenger areas and optimizing weight distribution.

Perodua showcases first working EV prototype, up to 350km range

PERODUA has unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV) prototype – known as the Myvi Conversion – which will serve as the foundation for the compact car manufacturer in developing its electric technology.

As the name suggests, the prototype is based on the Myvi but equipped with a 55.7kWh battery pack, providing a driving range of up to 350km. It features a single electric motor at the front wheel, delivering an output of 161hp and 220Nm of torque.

The EV prototype consists of three main components: the power bench, the power converter system, and the overall frame design, all made in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the development of the power conversion technology is carried out in collaboration with a company based in Australia. Perodua is also cooperating with three local universities for this project.

“The process of developing the power bench is carried out by Perodua in collaboration with three local universities, namely Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, and Universiti Putra Malaysia,” said Perodua’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“This collaboration aims to fully understand the technology used.”

This collaboration, which began in September 2022, sees Perodua and the three universities working together to develop the EV power converter system from the basic stage.

The collaboration opens up opportunities for all parties to enhance their expertise and capabilities in the field of EV.

It is understood that Perodua’s first EV model is planned to be launched at the end of 2025 with a price not exceeding RM100,000.

“We chose the Perodua Myvi as the model of choice for this project because it is our car model that has won the hearts of most Malaysians,” said Zainal.

“Although the actual appearance of our EV is different from what is being showcased here, rest assured that Perodua’s electric car will make its presence in the market.

“Meanwhile, we invite the public to visit the Perodua booth at the Malaysia Auto Show 2024 to see the Perodua Myvi Conversion for themselves and participate in various attractive campaigns that we have prepared.

“We also welcome customers to interact with our staff here to obtain further information about Perodua, such as our newly implemented Standard Outlet aimed at providing a seamless experience to customers at our 3S center,” said Dato’ Sri Zainal.
