Afeela EV presented with closer to production specs

Sony and Honda at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 event last year have surprised the world with the debut of the new EV brand Afeela.

The collaboration, later named Sony Honda Mobility, has now unveiled the updated prototype of the Afeela electric sedan at the CES 2024 event in Las Vegas.

What you see here is the Afeela EV with specifications closer to the actual production model. Compared to the previous model, the sedan brings several changes, such as the use of traditional side mirrors, slimmer main headlight units, and a new bumper design.

The charging port door is now larger, while the rocker panel and rear bumper sections have also been updated. The cabin design is almost the same as the original prototype model, except for the larger center console structure, followed by a redesigned steering wheel.

Additionally, there are two wireless smart device charging slots and a camera module positioned above the full-width screen panel.

The Afeela EV will feature dual single electric motor setups, each delivering 241 hp, along with a 91.0 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The sedan supports fast DC charging up to 150 kW, and 11 kW AC charging. The air suspension system is standard with a multi-link setup at the rear, along with 21-inch rims (245/40 front tires, 275/35 rear tires).

It is noted that reservations for this sedan will open in 2025 before it goes on sale in 2026. However, before that, Afeela will allow the sedan to be driven for the first time through the Gran Turismo 7 racing simulation game this year.

TOGG T10F – Turkish first electric sedan with up to 435PS

Perhaps not many are aware, but behind the flood of electric vehicle (EV) brands from China, the world is now also welcoming the arrival of a new EV brand from Turkiye, namely Togg.

Togg, or its full name Türkiye’nin Otomobili Girişim Grubu (the Turkish Automobile Joint Venture Group), recently unveiled the T10F electric sedan at CES 2024, which is set to be marketed in Europe next year.

It is a fastback sedan in the C segment, where Togg describes this model as a connected smart device, not just a car. Based on a brief reference on the official website, this Togg T10F can be equipped with a single electric motor or dual electric motors.

The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, thanks to the powerful 218 PS electric motor and 350 Nm of torque.

The all-wheel-drive (AWD) version is even faster, going from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, with two more powerful electric motors (435 PS/700 Nm).

For full charging, the battery pack, whose capacity is not disclosed, can allow a range of 530 km (AWD) or up to 600 km (RWD version). The T10F supports rapid DC charging up to 180 kW, and charging from 20 to 80 percent can be completed in 28 minutes.

Togg also revealed the interior layout of this electric sedan, featuring a 12.3-inch cluster screen, a 29-inch infotainment screen, and a third 8-inch screen for HVAC control. Other features include a 500-liter cargo space, a heated steering wheel, and wireless smart device charging.

Lexus RZ450e F Sport Performance unveiled as an EV SUV, 100 unit only, RM379k in Japan

Lexus is attempting to steal some attention in the high-performance electric SUV market by introducing the special model RZ450e F Sport Performance.

It is actually the actual production version of the RZ Sport Concept model that was previously showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023.

Lexus utilized the expertise of aerobatic pilot Yoshihide Muroya to develop up to 17 aerodynamic components for this RZ450e model.

These include carbon fiber wings, followed by turning vanes on the sides using aircraft aerodynamic technology. In addition, the RZ450e also features a hood, roof, as well as front and rear spoilers made from carbon fiber.

The driving aspect relies on the expertise of racer Masahiro Sasaki, where the SUV suspension system has been retuned before being fitted with 21-inch ENKEI aluminum rims at all four corners.

Lexus uses a combination of black, silver white called Hakugin, and blue accents for the exterior. Meanwhile, the cabin carries a combination of black and blue on the dashboard, Ultrasuede-wrapped seats, synthetic leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum sports pedals, and F Sport Performance scuff plates.

In Japan, the Lexus RZ450e comes with a setup of two electric motors, each producing 204 PS/266 Nm (front) and 109 PS/169 Nm (rear), as well as a 71.4 kWh battery pack.

Prices start from 11,800,000 yen (RM379,132) with only 100 units of the RZ450e F Sport Performance slated for production. Each eligible buyer will be notified by their respective dealers on February 22, 2024.

Porsche Macan EV in final testing phase, global premiere 25 Jan

PORSCHE engineers are preparing the all-new Macan, which now is also an electric model (EV), for its global debut soon.

The SUV is currently in its final phases and has undergone various extreme tests. As previously reported, this second-generation Macan is an electric model replacing the first generation after 10 years on the market.

The Porsche Macan EV is built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE).  It remains a sporty Porsche but will become more efficient.

“When we develop a new model, it’s always about the driving dynamics and precision. That’s Porsche. It’s in our DNA. But it’s always about efficiency too. And design,” says Jorg Kerner, Vice President of the Macan Product Line.

The key to the new Macan’s aerodynamics is its drag coefficient (Cd) as low as 0.25. One of the challenges is maintaining the successful Macan identity while meeting new aerodynamic requirements.

This is achieved with Porsche Active Aerodynamic (PAA), which includes an active spoiler at the rear, active cooling flaps at the front, and a flat and closed underbody like a racing car.

Over 500km driving range

The Porsche Macan EV will be equipped with a 100kWh lithium-ion battery and 800-volt construction on the PPE platform.

This allows the Macan to receive fast DC charging up to 270kW, meaning the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. AC charging remains at 11kW. The driving range is over 500km for all variants.

Tested and ready for global launch

The Macan EV is currently in its final testing phase, and prototypes with overall camouflage have been driven over 3.5 million km on test tracks and public roads worldwide.

“We cover all temperature ranges. From minus 30 degrees Celsius in Scandinavia to plus 50 degrees Celsius, as we experienced in Death Valley in California,” said Kerner.

“Of course, an SUV also has to work on any surface. That’s why we test not only on roads, but also off-road, on gravel, snow and ice.” he said.

Systems such as all-wheel drive, two electric motors, Porsche Traction Management, Launch Control, Porsche Active Suspension Management, all have been tested on these surfaces.

Look out for our report after the official launch of the Porsche Macan EV on January 25th.

TAS: 2024 Toyota GR Yaris unveiled, gains 8-speed auto option

You may have read the report before this that the Toyota GR Yaris will be offered with an 8-speed automatic gearbox option.

Now it’s official, as it was launched by Toyota at the ongoing Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) event. Toyota has dubbed this gearbox the Direct Automatic Transmission.

Founded on a torque-converter unit, it has been tuned for quicker gear changes, and even features a mode for track use. In addition, the 2024 GR Yaris has undergone changes in several other areas.

The Circuit package will bring improved cooling system with an additional radiator, intercooler sprayers, and a redesigned intake system.

The automatic version also comes with a specific cooler for the gearbox. Both coolers can be seen from the side air vents. Interestingly, the automatic version only adds around 18kg in weight.

Chassis rigidity has been increased, and the suspension has been further enhanced to accommodate more power from the engine. It’s not just a regular tune-up, but a “strengthened” one.

There are new materials for the exhaust valve, higher pressure for direct fuel injection, a new air pressure sensor, and lighter wheels.

Finally, the GR Yaris has been given a facelift both externally and internally. The front bumper is more aggressive, while the cabin space is more driver-focused. The new 12.3-inch screen is from the GR Corolla.

Previously, the GR Yaris was among several vehicles offered with a manual gearbox option only, alongside the Honda Civic Type R. With the addition of an automatic option, does it make the GR Yaris less ‘hardcore’?

Hyundai Supernal S-A2 flying taxi ‘lands’ in CES 2024

Located at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2024), Hyundai presented its second eVTOL (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) concept model, the S-A2, in a concept form ready for future production.

The S-A2 is actually an enhanced version of the S-A1 concept model showcased at CES 2020, featuring up to eight fan blades to assist in the vertical takeoff and landing process.

According to Hyundai, the S-A2 can fly at speeds of up to 193 km/h at altitudes of up to 457 meters. Despite this capability, Hyundai explains that the eVTOL is designed for short-range flights ranging from 40 to 64 km initially, particularly in large cities with high traffic density.

Hyundai also ensures that the eVTOL’s flight operations do not produce disruptive noise for surrounding residents, with sound levels of only 65dB during takeoff and approximately 45dB while flying—quiet like a home dishwasher.

For short-range flights, the S-A2 cabin space does not require plush and comfortable seating, but Hyundai still ensures it is made of aircraft-grade materials for safety purposes.

Currently, the Supernal S-A2 is not yet ready for operation, but at CES 2024, they have provided an exhibition space offering virtual flights across the airspace of Los Angeles to visitors.

Pilot project to test diesel subsidy card system, petrol firms’ fleet card next month – KPDN

A pilot project to test the MySubsidi Diesel system of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Fleet Card system of petrol companies through six selected goods transport companies will be implemented with effect from February 1.

Its minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the implementation of the pilot project was for the expansion of granting subsidised diesel quotas to the land transport (goods) sector through the Subsidised Diesel Control System 2.0 (SKDS 2.0).

The six companies are Perceptive Logistic Sdn Bhd, Multimodal Freight Sdn Bhd, Mun Chuen Transport Sdn Bhd, Tan Swee Hee Sdn Bhd, Sim Yew Enterprise Sdn Bhd and Rantau Panjang Haulage Sdn Bhd which were selected after their Skid Tank quotas expire this month.

“An engagement session was held to give exposure to pilot companies and petrol companies about the guidelines to apply for quotas and reporting under MySubsidi Diesel System and the Fleet Card system,” he said during a press conference.

Earlier Armizan made a working visit to review the preparations of Syarikat Perceptive Logistics for the implementation of the pilot project in Port Klang.

He explained that SKDS is currently given through two channels, namely Skid Tank which involves manual application and processing and Fleet Card which uses the MySubsidi Diesel KPDN system.

“At this point, only the land transport sector (public) uses the Fleet Card channel while the goods transport sector (land), river passenger boats as well as ferries and boats to the main island still use the Skid Tank channel,” he said.

He said the use of Fleet Card can reduce the offence of misappropriation and smuggling of subsidised diesel since the system will be digitally monitored by KPDN and oil companies while Skid Tank only involves reporting by the companies involved.

“KPDN will continue to monitor the implementation of this pilot project and get feedback from the industry to ensure the effectiveness of the implementation of the system which is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of this year,” he said

Owners surprised to find Proton X70’s resale value less than 50% after only 3 years

The owners of Proton X70 are generally surprised to find that the resale value of their cars is less than 50 percent only after three years of purchase.

Screenshots from the vehicle sales website are being shared on several forums and Facebook groups. A brief survey by Engear also discovered that the 2018 Proton X70 is being resold at prices below RM50,000, approximately RM47,800.

The 2019 model, on the other hand, is advertised at around RM59,000, with a range between 50,000 and 94,000. For us, this depreciation is not too severe, it’s still quite normal. However, only some units of the 2020 Proton X70 are being sold for as low as RM56,700 for the 1.8 Executive AWD variant.

This model was priced at RM115,800 at launch, so indeed its value has depreciated by less than 50 percent over three years. But not all units are the same, as there are still 2020 models priced at over RM80,000.

In reality, the depreciation of a vehicle depends on many factors, including the vehicle’s age, condition, accident records, service history, mileage, and perhaps accessories.

Prices also vary between direct sales from owners and used car dealerships. Another thing to consider is, even if the depreciation value is significant, why? Did you buy the car solely for resale?

If the purchased car serves us well, is enjoyable to drive, and we are satisfied with the purchase, then that should be enough. Not everyone buys a car for resale.

Geely Galaxy E8 launched in China – 800 volt battery, up to 665km range

Geely has just launched the Galax E8 in China, which is the third model in the Galaxy series. This sedan EV is built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform with a sleek and sporty body design.

The design is not just for aesthetics, as the Galaxy E8 reportedly has a drag coefficient of only 0.199, lower than the Mercedes EQS (0.202) and Nio ET7 (0.208).

As usual, there’s no front grille, but the Geely Galaxy E8 features sharp headlamps and DRL. The side profile is free of any protruding objects that would disrupt airflow, and the door handles are retractable.

The interior of the cabin is striking, with a large 45-inch 8K resolution screen that stretches across the dashboard. Chinese companies seem to favor these large screens.

The Galaxy E8 also comes with a flat-bottomed and flat-top steering wheel, meaning it’s not circular. The central console is compact with six buttons, a rotary knob, a wireless charger pad, and storage space. Other features include ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof.

For the mechanical aspect, the Geely Galaxy E8 is available in several configurations. The first is a 400-volt version with a 62kWh lithium phosphate (LFP) battery, a 272hp rear axle motor, and a driving range of 550km.

Another version has a 272hp motor but is equipped with a larger 76kWh battery pack, extending the driving range to 665km.

The highest variant has an 800-volt battery, a 224hp front motor, a 421hp rear motor, and a 76kWh battery pack. This variant can be driven up to 665km on a single charge.

BYD sold over 3 million NEV cars in 2023, beats Tesla in EV sales for Q4

WHILE Tesla maintains its position as the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in 2023, its competitor, BYD, has set a new record as the leading new energy vehicle producer globally.

Throughout 2023, BYD successfully distributed approximately 3,024,417 new energy vehicles, including EVs, hybrids, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

This achievement has placed BYD among the top 10 largest vehicle manufacturers in the world. Out of this total, 1.57 million units comprised electric vehicles (for comparison, Tesla sold 1.8 million units), while another 1.4 million consisted of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

In recent years, BYD has consistently narrowed the gap left by Tesla. In 2022, BYD’s sales figures were nearly 400,000 units lower than Tesla’s, but the difference was reduced by almost half in 2023.

Furthermore, in the fourth quarter of 2023, BYD successfully surpassed Tesla in EV sales, indicating a significant challenge ahead for the American EV manufacturer to maintain its leadership position in the coming year.
