Always hoping that ICE and manual transmissions stay relevant and don’t disappear. It’s more about balance than just power.

This is the final ICE Nissan GT-R that Malaysians won’t be able to buy

NISSAN Malaysia, under the umbrella of Edaran Tan Chong Motor, has recently slowed down their operations. There have been no new model launches, and several promised SUV models are still yet to make an appearance in the Malaysian market.

Meanwhile, in the Japanese market, Nissan has recently introduced updates for the high-performance GT-R 2025. Speculations suggest that this model might mark the conclusion of the R35 series before production ceases.

The updated version closely resembles the exterior of the previous year’s facelift model. Additionally, the GT-R Premium Edition now offers the option of Blue Heaven upholstery, giving its cabin a classic appearance.

One of the notable changes brought by the update is the inclusion of exclusive engine components that were previously only available for the Nismo Special Edition. This includes the use of Nismo components such as piston rings, connecting rods, and a balanced crankshaft.

Consequently, the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine in the Nissan GT-R Premium Edition T-Spec and Track Edition now provides quicker engine revs and turbo spooling. The horsepower remains the same, standing at 565 hp for the standard model and 600 hp for the Nismo edition.

Despite these minor changes, the selling price of the Nissan GT-R 2025 has significantly increased, ranging from ¥14,443,000 (~RM457,361) for the standard version to ¥30,613,000 (~RM969,411) for the GT-R Nismo Special Edition.

Looking towards the future of the GT-R, there are recent indications. At the Japan Mobility Show late last year, Nissan unveiled the fully electric concept model, Hyper Force.

Although its appearance may seem overly aggressive for a supercar, the Nissan GT-R “R36” is reported to be capable of generating up to 1,341 hp with an all-wheel-drive e-4ORCE system and two driving modes: GT (Grand Touring) and R (Racing).

In all likelihood, the newly launched Nissan GT-R 2025 in Japan will only enter the Malaysian market through third-party channels, provided there is a demand.

Volvo Safety Driving Experience provides opportunity to face emergency situations, experiencing advanced safety systems

When asked what comes to mind with Volvo, undoubtedly safety springs to mind. The Swedish manufacturer is synonymous with safety and takes pride in it.

Recently, Volvo Car Malaysia organized their first Volvo Safety Driving Experience at the country’s first air base (former) in Bandar Malaysia, Sungai Besi.

The event, held on a Saturday a few weeks ago, saw over 240 Volvo owners and enthusiasts learning driving skills through exercises such as braking, steering, and quick lane changes.

For us in the media industry, such activities are not entirely unfamiliar, but it was the first time with Volvo, making it still something interesting to observe.

The first driving activity involved changing lanes to the left or right followed by maximum braking until the vehicle stopped. Using the Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, this activity was performed at speeds of 60 or 70 km/h.

Even at this speed, it was evident that it could feel aggressive for passengers despite the car remaining stable. Imagine having to perform this emergency maneuver while driving at 110 km/h on the highway…

Next, we were taken to the braking activity on a straight road while avoiding obstacles. Here, it could be seen that the ABS allowed the car to remain controllable even when braking hard.

Most importantly, the driver’s ability to react and focus during driving to reduce the risk of collisions in emergency situations is crucial.

Next, we were shown demonstrations of the safety systems present in the latest Volvo models.

Among them was the Cross Traffic Alert, which warns the driver of traffic behind when attempting to reverse out of a parking spot. The warning provided is accurate depending on the direction and distance of the traffic.

We also had the opportunity to try the Pilot Assist system with the Volvo V60, which helps the driver control speed in traffic along with steering assistance.

Crucially, Pilot Assist is also capable of braking automatically if the traffic ahead slows down, and it does so smoothly and naturally, like a real driver. This can undoubtedly reduce the burden and fatigue on the driver in everyday situations.

The last activity included a slalom course and high-speed acceleration. During the slalom, we could feel the agility of the Volvo S90, V60, XC60, and XC90 being driven through narrow routes adeptly, but in a safe manner.

Despite most of these models weighing around two tons, they were still stable and agile and had very convincing braking performance.

Lastly, for the high-speed driving activity, we were given the opportunity to accelerate on the Sungai Besi Airfield runway, which is 1.8 km long, although we were not pilots wanting to take off.

Instead, we pushed these Volvo plug-in hybrid models to their maximum speed of 180 km/h and demonstrated the stability of these models when braking from high speeds. This maximum speed could also be achieved very quickly, in about 20 seconds.

Overall, the Volvo Safety Driving Experience provides participants the chance to experience and test the capabilities of Volvo models in safety-related situations.

Moreover, in the hangar, there was an exhibition of all Volvo models, sponsored by Pirelli, the main tire sponsor, and family activities such as Småland for children, as well as an exhibition by PURAS.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets bigger battery, now with rear wiper

Whether you realize it or not, it has been three years since Hyundai launched the Ioniq 5 electric crossover in 2021. For the South Korean market, the EV has now been updated with several changes in terms of exterior design, a larger battery pack, and the introduction of the new N Line variant.

The intended design changes are not very significant. What has changed are the front and rear bumper units that have been revised, more aerodynamic alloy rims, the addition of a rear wiper, and a larger rear spoiler. Due to the bumper design, the length dimensions of this EV have also increased by 20 mm to 4,655 mm.

Regarding the cabin space, the layout of the dashboard seems to have remained largely unchanged, except for the addition of physical control buttons on the center console for functions such as seat heating and steering wheel heating, as well as parking assistance buttons. Meanwhile, the control panel for the air conditioning system has also been redesigned for easier operation.

If you’ve noticed, the Ioniq 5 now comes equipped with a side view camera system, where the images from the camera are displayed through two screens at the end of the dashboard.

The facelifted Ioniq 5 also received a larger 84 kWh battery pack compared to the previous 77.4 kWh unit, which is seen to have a positive impact on the driving range compared to the pre-facelift model. As a reference, the previous Ioniq 5 was able to travel up to 507 km using the 77.4 kWh battery pack (WLTP data).

Behind the fresher exterior appearance, Hyundai engineers have reworked aspects of the suspension for smoother driving, as well as increased the rigidity of the cowl crossbar component to reduce steering wheel vibration.

The facelifted Hyundai Ioniq 5 is also now safer, thanks to the reinforcement of the rear wheels, underbody, doors and B-pillars, as well as the addition of airbags on the second-row sides – making a total of eight airbags!

Finally, Hyundai has improved the sound insulation of the rear electric motor, making the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels quieter.

As for the new variant, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is now available in the N Line trim, offering specific body kits, N Line badges, new 20-inch alloy wheels, a different steering wheel design, sports seats, new accents on the dashboard, and steel pedals.

Hyundai also mentions a more dynamic driving experience, indicating that the Ioniq 5 N Line has received special tuning on the chassis for an enhanced driving experience.

This is the 2024 Ypsilon, Lancia’s first new car in 13 years!

Who would have thought this would happen, but here it is, the all-new Lancia. The problem is, this Italian brand has not produced cars for the past 13 years.

Stellantis is determined to keep all 14 of its subsidiary brands under the FCA-PSA merger. This also means Lancia has the opportunity to improve its image.

This new 2024 Ypsilon becomes Lancia’s first electric vehicle (EV), although hybrid and petrol versions are set to follow.

It is built on the shared CMP/eCMP platform with the Peugeot 208/e-208, with different exterior styling. Lancia stated that the design of its front and rear lights is inspired by their iconic rally car. The round rear lights are reminiscent of the Stratos.

There are also ‘Y’ motifs on the front and rear lights. Meanwhile, the wheel arches, side mirrors, and rear pillars are finished in black. The interior of the cabin is quite different from its Peugeot counterpart, but given that we are in 2024, there are still two screens on the dashboard.

There are also several physical buttons for air conditioning control. Lancia has provided wireless charging pads, three USB-C sockets, and connectivity for Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Additional features include ambient lighting and a cabin filter.

The Lancia Ypsilon is powered by a front-mounted electric motor with an output of 154hp and 260Nm of torque. Power is supplied by a 51kWh battery pack, providing a driving range of 403km.

For charging, the battery can reach 80 percent from 20 percent in just 24 minutes using a DC charger.

What are your thoughts on this Lancia Ypsilon? Are there fans who miss the Lancia brand?

This Honda CR-V Hydrogen could power your coffee machine

Honda has collaborated with General Motors to develop a new generation fuel cell system that will become part of the FCEV package for the CR-V.

Revealed in a new video, it shows the CR-V as the indirect successor to the discontinued Honda Clarity, which ceased production in 2021. However, Honda is making a slight difference this time as the new CR-V will combine fuel cells with a battery pack.

The promotional video showcases the benefits of dual charging, where the owner charges their coffee machine in a remote area using the car’s battery, then proceeds to a hydrogen station to refill the H2 fuel in the rear tank. In reality, this dual charging system is not new.

Many electric vehicles (EVs) offer this functionality, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Leaf, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Chery Omoda E5.

Additionally, adding a battery pack will certainly enhance the practicality of the Honda CR-V Hydrogen, especially considering the limited availability of hydrogen refueling stations.

Honda has not shared much further information, but it is evident that the CR-V Hydrogen will be produced at the Performance Manufacturing Centre (PMC) in Ohio. This is the same facility that once manufactured the Honda NSX hybrid.

The prototype in this video is clad in a blue wrap, clearly indicating the United States (US) version as it features side marker lights on the bumper. Compared to the standard CR-V, this model has clear taillights and a charging port on the front fender.

‘Mr. Bean’ blamed for slow EV car sales in UK

ACTOR Mr. Bean, Rowan Atkinson, has been criticized following the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) in the United Kingdom that is reported to be sluggish or less appealing, as reported by Sky News.

Atkinson’s name was mentioned during a climate change and environment meeting at the House of Lords last week. They said that Atkinson’s comments worsened EV sales in the UK.

The comment was published in The Guardian on June 3, 2023, where Atkinson said, “electric vehicles are not as environmentally friendly as claimed.”

He also commented on the impact of EVs on the environment, their production, alternative fuel sources, car lifespan, and “our honeymoon with EVs is over.”

The following week, The Guardian published another article by Simon Evans, deputy editor of Carbon Brief, who confirmed the inaccuracies of Atkinson’s claims.

In the meeting, the Green Alliance provided its opinion on the main obstacles facing the UK government in the process of phasing out diesel and petrol cars before 2035.

They said, “One of the most damaging articles is the written comment by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian, which has been proven wrong.”

“Unfortunately, fact-checking will not reach as widely as the initial false claims.”

Last year, the UK government announced the postponement of the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2035. According to them, the change is “more practical, suitable, and realistic,” alleviating the burden on workers.

Ferrari is spotted testing Tesla Model S in Maranello

THE Prancing Horse brand is reported to be testing an electric-powered model near its manufacturing plant in Maranello.

Based on a video by the Varryx YouTube channel, Ferrari engineers were seen selecting a Tesla Model S Plaid equipped with high-voltage stickers and 19-inch rims.

This is part of Ferrari’s preparation to launch an electric vehicle expected to debut in 2025.

By using the Tesla Model S Plaid as the test car, Ferrari’s first electric vehicle is likely to feature two to three electric motors and power that could potentially match the Lanzador model from its competitor, Lamborghini.

For reference, the Tesla Model S Plaid is capable of producing up to 1,020 hp, while the Lamborghini Lanzador can reach up to 1 megawatt (1,341 hp).

In recent years, many parties have begun using Tesla electric cars to study the engineering behind EVs, such as Porsche, Volvo, and Ford.

This is because Tesla was among the earliest to enter the EV arena and one of the first to offer electric vehicles with a relatively long range.

Therefore, it makes sense for other manufacturers to try to learn from the strengths and weaknesses of Tesla to apply them to their own products.
