Modenas to launch the Ninja ZX-25RR in February

THE launch of the Modenas Ninja ZX-25R SE for the local market around September last year certainly received an encouraging response.

The motorcycle has quickly captured the interest of buyers in Malaysia, especially those seeking high-performance machinery without the need to upgrade from a B2 to a full B license.

However, Modenas is set to bring good news for the four-cylinder motorcycle as it is said to introduce the top variant, the Ninja ZX-25RR, this February.

Although the Ninja ZX-25RR shares the same components as the Ninja ZX-25R SE, the main difference lies in the rear monoshock equipped with a fully adjustable Showa BFRC (Balance Free Rear Cushion). This premium monoshock is the same component used in the larger Ninja ZX-10R.

Meanwhile, the RR version continues to be powered by the same 249.8cc four-cylinder engine found in the SE variant, producing 51hp (with Ram-Air) and 22.9Nm of torque.

In terms of pricing, we anticipate a difference of approximately RM2,000 to RM3,000.

Government considering ‘lemon law’ to protect car buyers

The government is now in the early stages of reviewing and investigating the possibility of establishing a “lemon law,” said Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Armizan Mohd Ali.

Speaking to FMT, Armizan stated that Malaysia is actively addressing consumer protection issues related to damaged vehicles and analyzing international practices before adapting them for local use.

He commented on the demand by the Penang Consumers Association (CAP) for the introduction of a “lemon law,” which is a legal remedy for consumers who purchase faulty vehicles, whether new or old, that fail to meet specific quality and performance criteria within a specific period.

The United States, Singapore, South Korea, China, and the Philippines are among the countries that implement such laws.

However, Armizan mentioned that the Consumer Protection Act 1999, which is enforced in Malaysia, also protects consumers from faulty vehicles.

“The Act protects consumers in several ways related to faulty vehicles, even though it is not specifically a ‘lemon law’ and does not offer specific remedies such as repurchasing a car that cannot be repaired. It provides various provisions that can be used to address faulty vehicle issues.”

Recently, there have been two reports of newly purchased vehicles breaking down, which have been widely shared on social media.

A clerk, S Nagakanni, reported that her new Perodua Bezza broke down eight hours after purchase, and she had to continue paying the monthly loan of RM537, even though the car was stranded at the service center.

Noriya Mamat from Terengganu also stated that her newly purchased Honda HR-V was stranded at the service center for months after sending it for servicing one month after the purchase upon reaching a mileage of 1,000km. She mentioned that she had to make monthly payments of RM1,500 for a car that she couldn’t drive at all.

Malaysia car sales hit record high of 799,731 units in 2023

THE Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) has reported that the total industry volume (TIV) of the Malaysian automotive industry rose to a record high of 799,731 units in 2023, representing an 11% increase from the 721,177 units recorded in 2022.

According to MAA President Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain, the increase was primarily driven by the passenger cars sub-segment, following a resilient domestic economy and stable socio-political environment.

He further added that the growth was also propelled by tax incentives, new launches including competitively priced electric vehicles, and improved industry supply chain environment.

“The industry’s sales growth last year marked the second annual gain since the downturn in 2020-2021 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was also the second consecutive year the TIV exceeded the 700,000-unit mark,” he said.

The Nissan X-Trail Mountain Rescue gets snow tracks and DJI drone

NISSAN has transformed the X-Trail from a regular SUV into an emergency vehicle for complete rescue operations, complete with snow chains, a winch, and rescue equipment.

The Nissan X-Trail Mountain Rescue Concept was showcased at the Cervinia ski resort in Italy. It was designed to remind the public to engage in skiing activities responsibly and ethically.

In addition to the four snow chain-equipped tires, enabling the X-Trail to carry out rescue missions in snowy mountains, Nissan has provided a special roof rack.

It comes with special lights, emergency sirens, a winch, and even includes skis and a snow shovel. The X-Trail is also fitted with larger and wider fenders, tow points, a winch cable, floodlights, and a 23cm higher ground clearance.

Upgrades continue inside where the vehicle is equipped with a Garmin GPS and Motorola communication devices. A major modification is in the rear, where the seats have been removed to accommodate stretchers. Additionally, it features rear-facing treatment seats.

Finally, there is a storage cabinet containing emergency supplies such as a snow depth gauge and a thermal blanket. There is also space for accommodating a DJI drone!

Although this concept outlines responsible skiing ethics, it also showcases the e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system on the X-Trail.

According to Nissan, it can respond to changes in grip at a rate of 1/10,000th of a second, which is over 1,000 times faster than conventional systems. The e-4ORCE can also distribute power according to grip levels.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail JAOS is what happens when luxury meets ruggedness

JUST in case you didn’t know, JAOS or JApan Offroad Service, has been producing and selling off-road parts since its inception back in 1985.

Perhaps due to its broad experience in the off-road segment, Lexus has decided to join forces with JAOS to develop a very interesting concept model for the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon. Introducing, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail JAOS version.

To begin with, JAOS has enhanced the durability and ruggedness of Lexus’ premium off-road SUV by deploying a front bumper guard and a 4 mm-thick aluminum skid plate underneath the bumper.

Additionally, the JAOS-spec GX 550 Overtrail is also equipped with matte black fender guards, steel tubular side steps, as well as a full set of mudguards that come with EVA flaps and aluminum plates.

Its robust tough appearance is further reinforced with a Battlez Lift Kit suspension system which includes titanium springs and adjustable dampers. The chunky fenders are matched with equally chunky Toyo Open Country A/T III tyres wrapped around 18-inch Tribe Cross rims.

Also included is a 1,250 mm x 1,400 mm aluminum roof rack, as well as LED lights on the front bumper guard.

Lexus has not stated whether this concept model received a powertrain upgrade, but more horsepower may be the last thing the GX 550 needs. This is because, in its standard version, the GX 550 already offers a healthy output of 349 hp and 650 Nm.

Its off-road credentials are further cemented by a host of features including 4WD, Torsen limited-slip differential, rear locking differential, Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor.

Sepang International Circuit rental rates to increase starting April 1

SEPANG International Circuit (SIC) has confirmed that track rental rates will be increased by as much as 45% effective April 1.

According to NST, the new rate card will see track rental on weekdays for daytime sessions increase by 27% from RM55,000 to RM70,000, while weekend rates will go up by 32% from RM60,500 to RM80,000.

For evening sessions, the rental rates on weekdays will increase by 41% from RM55,000 to RM78,000, while weekend rates will go from RM60,500 to RM88,000, representing a hike of 45%.

The mentioned prices are inclusive of technical and medical personnel assistance, ambulances and car, cleaning services, security staff, and access to relevant facilities.

According to SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif, the price hike was to ensure that the FIA grade one standard circuit continues to operate at the “highest standards.”

“As part of SIC’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards in facilities and services, we have announced an adjustment to our track and facility rental pricing which will take effect on 1 April 2024,” said Shafriman.

“This decision was vital to uphold the quality of our facilities, enhance services and facilitate ongoing improvements that will contribute to a better customer experience.

“This advance notice was provided to ensure transparency and allow ample time for all clients and stakeholders to make necessary preparations.

“Rest assured that we are fully committed to facilitating a smooth transition for our clients and stakeholders,” he said.

In January last year, Shafriman was quoted as saying the increase was inevitable due to increasing operating and maintenance costs. SIC has not raised its rental prices since 2013.

“Let’s keep on making engines” – Toyota Chairman

The world’s largest car manufacturer, Toyota, is determined not to concede in the internal combustion engine race. The company aims to uphold this commitment, driven by the direction of its chairman and car enthusiast, Akio Toyoda.

He is adamant about safeguarding millions of jobs in Japan while simultaneously offering choices to future car buyers.

“To those who have been producing engines from the past until now, let’s continue to develop engines,” Toyoda stated during the Tokyo Auto Salon 2024 (TAS2024) event.

“As car enthusiasts, we are tasked with shaping the future. My desire to enjoy cars leads me to want to explore various technologies. This is something I take seriously,” he added.

Highlighting that over 5.5 million workers are involved in engine manufacturing in Japan, Toyoda emphasized the importance of retaining these jobs.

He outlined Toyota’s multifaceted plan for future mobility, stating, “The approach to carbon neutrality depends on the country and region. However, shouldn’t we consider the desires for cars that we need?”

Toyoda noted that outside of the country, Toyota has numerous colleagues with similar interests and desires. He expressed that Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are not the sole means to achieve carbon neutrality, as Toyota has been developing hydrogen technology for the past three years.

“Last year, we tested liquid hydrogen and drove it at Le Mans. There is still work to be done in engine technology to achieve carbon neutrality. So, let’s refine engine technology. Let’s start that project,” Toyoda concluded.

Autozam AZ-1 transforms into Ferrari F40 courtesy of Liberty Walk

WHEN I think of Liberty Walk, the first thing that comes to my mind are high-powered vehicles such as the Lamborghini Aventador, Nissan GT-R and McLaren 650S wearing outlandish body kits.

For their latest project, however, the renowned Japanese tuner has taken a slightly different approach by developing a body kit for a much more docile car, the Autozam AZ-1.

The AZ-1 is a kei sports car with a mid-engine configuration produced by Mazda under the Autozam brand in the early 90s. And the latest body kit from Liberty Walk will transform it into a Ferrari F40.

Needless to say, due to its miniature size, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this is not a genuine F40. That being said, there’s no denying that its front end bears a striking resemblance to the fabled Italian supercar.

Not only that, this body kit also includes canards, a front splitter, and of course, Liberty Walk’s staple, wider front and rear fenders to ensure complete transformation. The left and right door panels have embossing in the shape of NACA ducts, inspired by that of the F40.

At the rear, you’ll find a tall, fixed spoiler with big endplates and a diffuser with long strakes to help enhance aerodynamic efficiencly. Like the F40, the Liberty Walk-kitted AZ-1 also boasts centre-exit triple muffler tips.

According to the company’s website, the AZ-1 body kit package is priced starting from 2,226,000 yen (RM71,405), excluding the front and rear lights.

Additionally, customers looking to complete the F40-inspired look on their AZ-1 can opt for LB forged wheels measuring 16 inches in the front and 17 inches in the rear, priced at 1,430,000 yen (RM45,871).

Chery Malaysia, Carsome join forces to revolutionise car trade-ins

CHERY Malaysia announced that it has recently signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
Carsome and Carsome Academy.

The primary focus of these partnerships is to revolutionise vehicle trade-ins and enhance soft skills within the brand’s network of representatives.

Carsome is making the process seamless for new Chery customers walking into their showroom. Upon opting for a trade-in, customers can have Carsome conduct a vehicle inspection at their preferred location.

Following the inspection, Carsome will promptly offer a price for the trade-in vehicle. Once the offer is accepted, customers can then hand over their old vehicle before or while collecting their new Chery vehicle.

Carsome also threw in a special campaign to Chery dealers by offering an additional RM500 on top of the trade-in offer price for their customers who trade in their vehicles from 15 January to 15 February 2024.

Meanwhile, the second MoU aims to bolster soft skills within Chery’s network of representatives. The agreement will centre on four aspects, namely Upskilling Workfore, Peneraju Skil Motor Vehicle Inspection Programme, Training & Placements and Marketing Initiatives.

Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President Lee Wen Hsiang said both collaborations were timely for Chery Malaysia’s growing customer base over the months since the brand debut in July last year.

“The collaboration with CARSOME will be beneficial and important for our dealers, especially with the increase in customers who seek to trade in their old cars for a new Chery vehicle,” he said.

Additionally, with plans to expand showrooms to 48 outlets by the end of 2024, there will be an increase in the workforce, including sales representatives and managers. Therefore, ensuring the importance of Chery’s customer service becomes a crucial step for the brand’s future success.

TAS: 2024 Toyota GR Yaris unveiled, gains 8-speed auto option

You may have read the report before this that the Toyota GR Yaris will be offered with an 8-speed automatic gearbox option.

Now it’s official, as it was launched by Toyota at the ongoing Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) event. Toyota has dubbed this gearbox the Direct Automatic Transmission.

Founded on a torque-converter unit, it has been tuned for quicker gear changes, and even features a mode for track use. In addition, the 2024 GR Yaris has undergone changes in several other areas.

The Circuit package will bring improved cooling system with an additional radiator, intercooler sprayers, and a redesigned intake system.

The automatic version also comes with a specific cooler for the gearbox. Both coolers can be seen from the side air vents. Interestingly, the automatic version only adds around 18kg in weight.

Chassis rigidity has been increased, and the suspension has been further enhanced to accommodate more power from the engine. It’s not just a regular tune-up, but a “strengthened” one.

There are new materials for the exhaust valve, higher pressure for direct fuel injection, a new air pressure sensor, and lighter wheels.

Finally, the GR Yaris has been given a facelift both externally and internally. The front bumper is more aggressive, while the cabin space is more driver-focused. The new 12.3-inch screen is from the GR Corolla.

Previously, the GR Yaris was among several vehicles offered with a manual gearbox option only, alongside the Honda Civic Type R. With the addition of an automatic option, does it make the GR Yaris less ‘hardcore’?
