Toyota Hilux gets new looks, mild-hybrid power in Australia

The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V, which was launched in Europe last December, has now been introduced in Australia through a facelifted version of the pickup truck.

Similar to the European model, the facelifted Hilux for Down Under combines the existing 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with mild hybrid technology consisting of a motor generator, 48-volt battery, and DC/DC converter.

According to Toyota, the technology provides the Hilux with a Stop/Start system, helps the engine run smoother and improves fuel efficiency by approximately 6% to 10%, depending on variant.

For the Australian market, the 48V mild hybrid technology is equipped as standard in the 4X4 Rogue and SR5 double cab automatic variants, and optionally available on the 4X4 SR double cab.

In addition, all mild hybrid variants are made more capable off-road with the standard fitment of the Multi-Terrain Select system, which offers six driving modes.

However, unlike in Europe, the facelifted Hilux in Australia has been given a fresher look. The octagonal grille has been redesigned, while the front bumper now appears more prominent thanks to a trapezoid-shaped air intake and new fog lamp housings.

Some variants also feature a tough-looking black honeycomb mesh grille and a tailgate damper.

In terms of features, all SR double cab automatic variants now come with six parking sensors (two in the front, four in the rear), while the SR5, Rogue, and GR Sport variants receive a wireless charging pad and two USB-C ports.

The facelifted Hilux will arrive in Toyota showrooms across Australia starting this March, with prices ranging from AUD54,130 to AUD71,530 (RM167,800 to RM221,739) for the mild hybrid variants.

First recall campaign for Tesla Cybertruck, issue with warning lights on screen too small!

Just a few months out of the factory, the Tesla Cybertruck is now facing its first recall campaign. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 2.2 million Tesla vehicles built between 2012 and 2024 are being recalled due to issues with warning lights on the dashboard screen being too small.

“The Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights are displayed in a font size that is not appropriate. As a result, affected vehicles fail to meet the requirements of numbers 105 ‘Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems’ and 135 ‘Light Vehicle Brake Systems’ as set forth in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard regulations.”

It is understood that this recall campaign involves all 2,193,869 units of Tesla vehicles sold in the United States market.

Due to Tesla’s use of screens to replace analog gauges, owners do not need to take their vehicles to a Tesla service center; instead, they only need to await an over-the-air (OTA) update.

EDOTCO works with ChargeSini to install more than 200 new EV chargers nationwide

EDOTCO, the leading telecommunications infrastructure service company in Malaysia, has announced a collaboration with ChargeSini to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in the country.

This collaboration aligns with the national agenda outlined in the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030, which aims to have 10,000 public EV charging stations installed nationwide by 2025.

EDOTCO and ChargeSini are expected to support this initiative by planning to install over 200 EV charging stations at indoor building locations within the next two years.

EDOTCO’s extensive experience in telecommunications infrastructure will facilitate this process by providing power supply and parking space at the selected locations.

“With over 13,000 EVs in Malaysia today, we are ready for a sudden increase to half a million EVs by 2025,” said Gayan Koralage, Malaysia Country Director at EDOTCO Group.

“Our infrastructure available at strategic locations such as shopping malls, airports, hospitals, universities, and smart street poles, seamlessly integrates with the growing EV ecosystem,” added Gayan.

Meanwhile, James Goh, CEO and founder of ChargeSini, stated, “This collaboration demonstrates the synergy between EDOTCO’s experience and ChargeSini’s approach to EV charging technology.

“Our collaboration is not only about developing EV infrastructure, it also accelerates the adoption of sustainable mobility in Malaysia,” he said.

2024 Ford Mustang ‘lost’ 52hp for Europe

The increasingly stringent emission regulations have compelled vehicle manufacturers in Europe to take measures such as reducing the number of cylinders or adding turbochargers.

Remarkably, the Ford Mustang for the European market still retains its delicious 5.0-liter V8 naturally-aspirated engine, but there comes some bad news. The engine’s output has been reduced.

The standard version, which previously boasted 440hp, has now been reduced by 40hp to comply with the stringent regulations.

The torque has also been ‘only’ 540Nm, which is 28Nm less than the American version. Nevertheless, European consumers should be grateful that Ford can still offer a car with a V8 engine in today’s era.

The power is still quite impressive. For those who feel it’s not enough, there’s the Dark Horse version. This top-of-the-line Mustang produces 448hp and 540Nm of torque (a reduction of 52hp and 28Nm), and you can even pair it with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

It can accelerate to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 263km/h. Opting for the 10-speed automatic model can achieve 0-100 acceleration in 4.4 seconds, but the top speed is limited to 250km/h.

This new Ford Mustang was introduced in Europe since September 2022; however, it is only now being officially sold. In the UK, it is offered at a price of £55,585 (RM331,842) for the GT model, and £65,585 (RM391,542) for the Dark Horse variant.

Mitsubishi Xpander HEV, Xpander Cross HEV launched in Thailand

MITSUBISHI Motors Corporation has officially launched hybrid versions of the Xpander and Xpander Cross in the Thai market.

This marks the first time the seven-seater crossover has embraced electric hybrid power since it was launched into the market back in 2017.

Unlike the pure petrol version, which is powered by a 1.5-litre engine, both the Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV feature a 1.6-litre engine capable of producing 95 hp and 134 Nm on its own.

When combined with an electric motor, the Xpander HEV boasts a total system output of 116 hp and 255 Nm, which is channeled to the front wheels.

According to Japanese automaker, the Atkinson cycle engine boasts higher combustion efficiency and an electric water pump to reduce fuel consumption by up to 34% for urban driving and 15% for mixed driving conditions.

Dubbed the e:Motion, the hybrid powertrain offers seven driving modes, namely Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Mud, Wet, Charge, and EV.

Additionally, it also includes Active Yaw Control (AYC) that controls the braking force between the left and right front wheels.

In terms of design, the HEV models sport the facelifted front fascia introduced in 2022. That said, they can be set apart from the petrol versions by the HEV badge on the grille and tailgate, and the Hybrid EV badge on the front door.

Following the trend adopted for electrified vehicles, Mitsubishi has also incorporated blue accents to the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and wheels.

The interior features an 8-inch LCD meter, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electronic parking brake, as well as a new gear lever with Shift-by-Wire technology.

Sound absorbing and soundproofing materials have also been added at key locations to keep the interior quiet not only during driving on pure electric power but also when the engine activates during acceleration or when driving at high speeds.

In Thailand, the Xpander and Xpander Cross HEV are sold at 933,000 baht (RM124,544) and 961,000 baht (RM128,282), respectively.

Lewis Hamilton to drive for Ferrari in 2025?

The recent news surrounding Formula One (F1) has been plentiful. Following the rumors of Petronas aiming to bring F1 back to Sepang, there are now reports suggesting that Lewis Hamilton is set to drive for the Ferrari team next year.

The seven-time world champion is reported to have agreed to move from Mercedes-AMG Petronas to Scuderia Ferrari for the 2025 season. This news has been widely publicized by major news outlets such as Autosport and PlanetF1.

Hamilton, who will be approaching 40 years old by 2025, is expected to partner with Charles Leclerc, who recently signed a contract with Ferrari last week.

While Hamilton still has a contract with Mercedes until the end of 2025, it seems that the second year of the contract is merely an option for him to take.

As of now, it has not been confirmed whether Hamilton has indeed signed a contract with the Italian giant. Ferrari and Mercedes have both declined to provide any comments regarding this development.

BBC Sport has begun reporting that they have confirmed the move as a “strong possibility.”

Hamilton has dominated the F1 sport with Mercedes in the turbo hybrid era, securing six out of seven championships and eight constructor titles with the team.

The news of Hamilton’s transfer has been a sensation for the past few years. We eagerly anticipate further developments, and we will report as soon as we receive the latest updates on this matter.

GAC Emkoo, Aion Y Plus set for Malaysian launch this year

IN addition to the GS3 Emzoom, WTC Automotif (WTCA) also previewed two more models that it will soon bring into the Malaysian market, namely the GAC Emkoo and GAC Aion Y Plus.

The Emkoo is a mid-size SUV that will compete with the likes of the Honda CR-V and Proton X70. No exact date has been given but it is said to enter our market later this year.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II launched in Malaysia, from RM2.5 million

AFTER the launch of the Spectre last year, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur is debuting yet another new model to the local market, namely the Phantom Series II.

The eighth generation Phantom was introduced back in 2017 as the first Rolls-Royce car to utilise the brand’s all-aluminium spaceframe dubbed the ‘Architect of Luxury’, which has gone to underpin every new Rolls-Royce.

For the latest iteration, only the slightest of changes have been incorporated to meet the demand of the clients, who have implored Rolls-Royce not to make any major changes to an already iconic car.

On the outside, you’ll find a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon grille, as well as a subtle geometric change to the grille itself to futher accentuate the RR badge and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

The headlights feature intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, while the Phantom’s side profile is further enhanced with new 3D, milled, stainless steel wheels with triangle facets that can be had in either fully or part-polished finish.

Alternatively, customers may opt for disc wheels inspired by 1920’s Rolls-Royce motor cars.

Not only that, Rolls-Royce also offers a darkened chrome grille surround, as well as black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers.

The Phantom’s interior remains largely untouched, save for the steering wheel, which has been made slightly thicker for a more engaging driving experience.

Under the bonnet is a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that is capable of making 563 hp at 5,000 rpm and 900 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. With an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Phantom sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds.

In Malaysia, the Phantom is available in base and Extended versions, priced at RM2.5 million and RM2.9 million before tax, respectively.

Ducati Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini launched in Malaysia – RM460,900

Ducati Malaysia today launched the introduction of the Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini for the local market. Yes, you read that right.

The latest edition of the Streetfighter V4 combines the power and performance of Ducati with the luxury and elegance synonymous with Lamborghini.

When you look at its color and livery, you will know that the Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini is inspired by the Lamborghini Huracan STO (Super Trofeo Omologata). Its rims are sleek and aerodynamic, coupled with titanium locking nuts on the rear wheel.

This bike also features a carbon fiber texture like the Huracan STO. Additionally, the front mudguard, belly pan, fuel tank cover, and passenger seat cover resemble the air intakes and exhaust pipes found on the V10 supercar.

Speaking of the engine, the Ducati Streetfighter V4 is powered by a 1,103cc Desmosedici Stradale engine generating 208hp. The engine is also paired with a dry racing clutch and an Akrapovic titanium and carbon fiber exhaust silencer.

The Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini features the STO livery and the number 63, referring to the year of Lamborghini’s inception. The Verde Citrea green color dominates the body of this bike, with contrasting Arancio Dac.

“We are proud to have two of these limited edition motorcycles in Malaysia,” said Dennis Michale, CEO of Ducati Malaysia.

“The Ducati Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini is more than just a motorcycle; it symbolizes the shared history and passion for innovation between Ducati and Lamborghini.

“This formula brings together the best of two different worlds, resulting in a creation that is sought after by fans and collectors in Malaysia,” he said.

The Ducati Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini will only be produced in a limited quantity of 630 units worldwide. Interested? It is available for sale at a price of RM460,900.

Honda Malaysia retains No.1 spot in non-national passenger car segment

HONDA Malaysia announced that it has recorded more than 80,000 units of total sales, achieving its annual sales target for 2023.

This remarkable achievement has enabled Honda Malaysia to retain its No.1 position in the Non-National Passenger Vehicle Segment for the tenth consecutive year since 2014.

According to Honda Malaysia, the year 2023 was one of gradual recovery and a positive outlook. The company launched a total of four new models in the second half of the year, namely the WR-V, City, Civic Type R and CR-V.

The three top-selling models in 2023 are City, HR-V and City Hatchback contributing 30%, 25% and 13% respectively to the overall sales. In addition, the WR-V, HR-V, CR-V and Civic emerged as No.1 in their respective segments.

Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Hironobu Yoshimura said, “2023 proved to be a challenging year where we faced a competitive market. However, Honda Malaysia managed to overcome and achieved our sales target in 2023 with strong support from our dealers and the Malaysian Government.

Additionally, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all Honda customers who have played a crucial role in this achievement through their unwavering support towards the Honda brand.”

Honda Malaysia’s remarkable achievement this year was largely contributed by the launch of the WR-V in July. The small SUV received overwhelming response from the market with more than 7,800 units sold within the first six month of launch. The RS variant is the largest contributor, accounting for 60% of the total sales to-date.

Besides that, sales for e:HEV hybrid models also increased from more than 4,100 units in 2022 to more than 7,700 units in 2023, representing a 87% growth. In 2023, Honda’s e:HEV models contributed 28% to overall hybrid sales in Malaysia, which is a significant contribution to the growth of xEV’s in the country.

Second generation Porsche Macan now an EV – two variants, up to 630hp

Ladies and gentlemen, here is the all-new, second-generation Porsche Macan. As reported previously, this SUV has evolved to become a fully electric vehicle (EV), no longer offered with an internal combustion engine (ICE).

Does this mean that the Porsche Macan has become a less appealing model? Not at all. It is offered with two options: the 402hp Macan 4 and the Turbo Macan with up to 630hp.

This new Porsche Macan is built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) developed in collaboration with Audi. This platform utilizes an 800-volt electrical architecture.

It is powered by a 95kWh Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery, which can be fast-charged with up to 270kW DC chargers. The Macan 4 and Macan Turbo are driven by two synchronous permanent magnet electric motors. The rear motor rotates 180 degrees to provide a slightly rear-biased weight distribution.

As mentioned earlier, the maximum output for the Macan 4 is 402hp and 650Nm of torque, while the more powerful Macan Turbo generates up to 630hp and 1,130Nm of torque. However, these figures are based on Overboost mode during Launch Control.

What about performance? The Porsche Macan 4 can accelerate to 96km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the Macan Turbo can achieve the same in just 3.1 seconds. Their respective top speeds are 218km/h and 260km/h.

The maximum speeds for an EV seem quite high, don’t they? This is because the new Porsche Macan features a gear reduction system and does not use a two-speed gearbox like the one used in the Taycan.

As for the suspension, it utilizes a multi-link system at the front and rear. Air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) are provided as standard. A new feature of the Macan is the rear-axle steering system, which can turn up to 5 degrees depending on the situation.

Now, let’s talk about the design. In this regard, it’s typical Porsche – an evolution rather than a revolution. The Macan retains a coupe-like shape, although it features Taycan-like daytime running lights at the front.

The front lights are now integrated into the bumper, and there is no longer a hood clamshell. Since there’s no engine, the hood is lower as well.

Porsche states that the Macan has a drag coefficient of only 0.25, achieved through active aerodynamics such as the rear spoiler, underbody paneling, and front bumper flaps.

The interior space is similar to the latest Porsche models. It features a digital instrument panel with a curved screen, and in the middle, there is the latest generation infotainment system.

What is your opinion on the all-new, fully electric Porsche Macan generation?

Porsche Malaysia works with Krithin to inspire more dreamers

Similar to Ferry Porsche 75 years ago who wanted to build his dream sports car, Krithin Paul Pereira also has a dream.

An artist, designer, and engineer, Krithin also has a deep interest in sports cars. Despite having Cerebral Palsy, he overcomes challenges every day and expresses his passion through unique artistic works.

After making an appearance during the launch of the Porsche Cayenne CKD a few months ago, Krithin is now collaborating with Porsche Malaysia for a special project. He painted the Cayenne on a T-shirt to raise funds for Amirs Therapy Gym – where Krithin receives treatment.

Porsche Malaysia first met Krithin at the opening of the Porsche Club Malaysia office in Sungai Besi. Later, Krithin was invited by Porsche Malaysia to several important events, including the CKD Cayenne assembly plant in Kulim, Kedah, which is also the first Cayenne factory outside Europe.

Krithin’s work also attracted the attention and recognition of Porsche AG, and he received an invitation to visit the company’s factory in Stuttgart. Krithin had the opportunity to interact with designers and experience the sensation of driving the 911 GT3 on the Hockenheimring circuit.

“I would like to thank Porsche Malaysia for this opportunity. Amirs Therapy Gym holds a special place in my heart, where they help me build my physical and mental strength,” said Krithin.

“Despite facing various challenges in life, I always tell myself that I can do it because I am a limitless dreamer. And I also want to help others achieve their dreams in life,” he added.

Christopher Hunter, CEO of Sime Darby Auto Performance, representing Porsche Malaysia, said: “Since I met Krithin, he has inspired us in many ways. We gave him the opportunity to be with us for the launch of the Cayenne in Malaysia and now we are excited to continue this journey to inspire others as well,” said Christopher.
