Kia EV3 made global debut – Up to 600km range, Volvo EX30 rival?

KIA continues to expand their lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) with the introduction of the EV3, a compact SUV. This model joins the existing lineup, including the EV5, EV6, and EV9.

The Kia EV3 is built on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) but does not feature the 800-volt architecture found in the EV6 and EV9. Instead, it comes with a 400-volt architecture similar to the EV5, enabling DC charging from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes.

With a full charge, it can be driven up to 600km based on WLTP cycle. This range applies to the Long Range model, while the Standard Range variant offers a slightly shorter distance.

Power is supplied by nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, known for offering better power and longer lifespan.

Both variants are equipped with the same electric motor, mounted on the front axle. This motor has an output of 201hp and 283Nm of torque, allowing the EV3 to accelerate to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds. The maximum speed is limited to 170km/h.

The Kia EV3 is equipped with eDTVC (Electric Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control) for optimal grip, as well as a new feature called i-Pedal 3.0, which functions as regenerative braking.

The EV3 offers a cargo space of 460 liters, and since it has no engine, it also has an additional 25 liters of space under the front hood.

In terms of appearance, the Kia EV3 features the ‘Tiger Face Star Map’, a result of the design of the DRL (Daytime Running Lights) and main headlights. The grille also comes in two different bumper design options, depending on the variant.

Despite its boxy and angular shape, the Kia EV3 maintains aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient as low as 0.263.

The cabin design showcases a minimalist concept. There is a single horizontal air vent, dividing the dashboard into two sections. Several physical buttons are located on the center console.

The screen on the dashboard is quite large, consisting of a 12.3-inch instrument display, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, and a 5-inch air conditioning panel.

Some parts of the cabin are made from recycled materials, with the option of Air, Earth, or Water trim.

Other features include the Harman Kardon audio system, AI assistance, Automotive Content Platform, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Renault-Volkswagen low-cost EV is not happening

With the abundance of affordable electric vehicles (EV) from China, European manufacturers are beginning to feel worried.

Renault took the initiative to collaborate with Volkswagen in this competition, but it seems unsuccessful. The jointly developed low-cost EV will not be continued.

Renault’s CEO, Luca de Meo, stated that the discussions between the two parties have ended. He described the project as a “lost opportunity,” but mentioned that Renault is still open to cooperation with other manufacturers: “Maybe there are others.”

VW declined to comment, but it is confirmed that the two automotive giants will not continue their collaboration. Meanwhile, Renault will continue to produce the new generation Twingo, expected to arrive in 2026.

The current generation Twingo is still available, with options for traditional engines and EV. The upcoming new generation model will only be offered as an EV, with an expected price of less than €20,000 (RM101,965). On VW’s front, their plans after concluding discussions with Renault are still unclear.

Currently, the German manufacturer has the compact EV ID.3. The successor to the e-up! is also in development, expected to arrive in 2027, possibly named ID.1.

Naomi Campbell wraps a BMW XM in ultramarine velvet for Cannes Film Festival

WHAT you’re looking at here is not a handiwork of West Coast Customs custom shop from the reality TV show Pimp My Ride. It is in fact a one-off BMW XM that has been co-created with Naomi Campbell for the Cannes Film Festival.

Called the Mystique Allure, it is the first vehicle in the brand’s history to be designed using materials from the high fashion industry.

Nearly the entire upper body of the XM Mystique Allure is covered in velvet in a deeply saturated ultramarine shade, while the lower part of the SUV adorned with shimmering Frozen metallic sequins casting hues ranging from intense violet to deep ultramarine;

Its interior is equally luxurious, featuring purple velvet upholstery that touches every nook and cranny, including the roof, door panels, and the M Lounge in the rear.

We’re not sure if Ms Campbell is a fan of fast cars but if the answer is yes, the British supermodel will be more than happy with the XM seeing as how the SUV is the most powerful series-produced model from BMW M.

The XM Mystique Allure is based on the Red Label variant, meaning it has a potent 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that works with an electric motor to make a total power output of 748 PS and 1,000 Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 290 km/h if equipped with the M Driver’s Package.

While not receiving any power upgrades, the XM Mystique Allure has a unique acoustic character thanks to a bespoke adaptation of the BMW IconicSounds Electric developed by renowned composer Hans Zimmer.

This marks BMW’s third consecutive year as the official automotive partner of the Cannes Film Festival. For this year’s event, the company provides an exclusive shuttle service of more than 200 vehicles, including the i7, iX, i5, and XM.

Mercedes to stop using EQ for future EV models, revert to traditional naming

MERCEDES is reported to be considering discontinuing the use of the ‘EQ’ name for future fully electric vehicle (EV) models. According to a report by AutoExpress, this step will be taken after the end of life of all current first-generation EVs.

The German manufacturer will return to using traditional naming structures for their non-EV models. Currently, almost all Mercedes EV models have ‘EQ’ in their names, from EQA to EQS.

An exception was made for the G-Class, which was launched in Beijing last month. It was not called EQG as expected, but instead was named G580 with EQ Technology. This signifies a new direction in the naming of the brand’s EV models.

“EQ is a technical beginning, Mercedes-Benz in the future will not become EQ,” said Mercedes’ product manager, Tobi Mantele. “EQ is a technical platform for us. Once you move towards full electrification, you don’t want to undermine a brand like the S-Class, for example,” added another Mercedes spokesperson.

This direction also indicates that Mercedes wants to normalize EV as a regular model line and will use naming conventions similar to petrol and diesel models.

At the same time, Mercedes will not only offer pure EVs, but their electrification will also include plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. “We don’t want to completely eliminate the opportunities with our existing ICE platforms. We have top-performing PHEVs in the range, and we will update them,” said the spokesperson.

Alfa Romeo says arrivederci to Quadrifoglio with limited-run Super Sport models

Earlier this year, the Chief Operating Officer of Alfa Romeo USA, Larry Dominique, confirmed that sales of the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio would be discontinued in the country in April 2024.

Additionally, Dominique stated that production of the Quadrifoglio models for the US and Canada markets would cease in June. Both biturbo V6 models are assembled at the Stellantis factory in Cassino, Italy.

As a farewell gesture, Alfa Romeo has introduced a special edition model known as the Super Sport, which is inspired by the 6C 1500 Super Sport racing car that won the Mille Miglia race in 1928.

The Super Sport models are limited globally to 275 units for Giulia and 175 for Stelvio. Out of these numbers, 72 Giulias and 52 Stelvios are specifically allocated for the US.

Pricing starts from $86,770 (RM408,067) for the Giulia Quadrifoglio Super Sport and $94,370 (RM443,809) for the Stelvio Quadrifoglio Super Sport.

The Quadrifoglio Supersport models can be distinguished by a number of design elements, including the ‘reintepreted’ Quadrifoglio logo with a black background instead of white.

There are also carbon fibre parts such as the roof (optional on Giulia only), in the “V” of the grille shield, and the sideview mirror caps.

These are complemented by dark-coloured 19-inch five-hole alloy wheels for the Giulia and 21-inch for the Stelvio, along with Brembo brake calipers painted in black.

The Super Sports can be had in Rosso Etna, Nero Vulcano metallic, and Bianco Alfa, which is available for the Giulia only.

The sportiness is further highlighted by 3D red carbon fibre trim on the entire dashboard, center console, and door panels. The steering wheel is upholstered in leather and Alcantara with black stitching and carbon-fibre accents.

The front headrests are embroidered with the “Super Sport” logo in red and the car’s number in black to distinguish them as part of the exclusive limited series.

Both models are powered by an all-aluminum 2.9-litre biturbo V6 engine capable of delivering 505 hp and 600 Nm, channeled to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and mechanical LSD derived from the Giulia GTA.

Suzuki Jimny XL Heritage – 500 units, only for Australia

SUZUKI Jimny enthusiasts know that the small SUV has a long history that dates back to the 1970s era.

To commemorate this, Suzuki has introduced a limited edition model for the Jimny XL  (Jimny 5-Door) known as the Heritage. Only 500 units will be produced, all destined for the Australian market.

What makes the Jimny XL Heritage stand out?

The limited-run model is adorned with retro-style decals in orange and red on the sides and rear. This is complemented by the classic rhino logo on the rear shoulder and red mudflaps on all four corners.

Additionally, there are five exterior colours to choose from – White, Chiffon Ivory + Bluish Black Pearl, Jungle Green, Bluish Black Pearl, and Granite Grey Metallic.

Elsewhere, it’s exactly the same as the non-Heritage version. Under the hood, there is still a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 101 hp and 130 Nm.

The Jimny XL is normally available with either an automatic or manual transmission, but for the Heritage, Suzuki only offers a five-speed manual transmission.

Needless to say, the AllGrip Pro all-wheel-drive system is onboard to help channel power to the wheels.

Other niceties include a nine-inch touchscreen multimedia system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a cargo tray.

The selling price of the Jimny XL Heritage starts from AUD36,490 (RM114,047), about AUD1,500 (RM4,688) dearer than the standard version.

But pricing won’t be a problem, seeing as how the 3-door Jimny Heritage sold out in just two days.

BYD Shark launched in Mexico with a starting price of RM250k

BYD has officially introduced its first pickup truck, the Shark, in Mexico. BYD Chief of Americas Stella Li said Mexico was chosen due to the increasing demand for pickup trucks in the country.

It is interesting to note that the Shark was launched just hours after Joe Biden announced a tariff increase from 25% to 100% on EVs from China.

Reuters reported that BYD does not have any plans to sell the Shark in the United States.

As previously reported, the Shark uses a new plug-in hybrid powertrain known as the DMO (Dual-Mode Off-Road).

The PHEV powertrain features a combination of a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and two electric motors that generate a total power of 430 hp, allowing the Shark to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The battery specifications are not disclosed, but this truck offers an electric driving range of up to 100 km (NEDC cycle) and a total driving range of 840 km. The fuel consumption rate is approximately 7.5 litres per 100 km.

Like the Leopard 5, the Shark is built on a ladder frame chassis. It measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, 1,925 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,260 mm, making it larger than the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

The chassis is combined with an independent suspension system at the front and rear, which BYD claims can offer a balance between handling performance and comfort.

The Shark is a true and true pickup truck, so it boasts a maximum towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg. The truck bed offers a cargo space of 1,450 litres with a payload limit of 835 kg. For off-road driving, there are three selectable modes: Sand, Mud, and Snow.

Inside, you will find several elements synonymous with the BYD brand, including a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Additionally, it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the “Hi BYD” voice command system, karaoke function (microphone sold separately), a 50W wireless charger, and a 12-inch head-up display.

The safety system includes six airbags and ADAS features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent Navigation System (ICC), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Rear Cross Collision Warning (RCTA), Rear Cross Collision Braking (RCTB), and more.

In Mexico, the Shark is available in two variants, namely the GL and GS. The selling price starts from 899,980 pesos (RM250,356) for the former and 969,800 pesos (RM269,777) for the latter.
