Lamborghini Urus SE now in Malaysia, RM1.028 million before taxes and options

LESS than two months after making its debut at Auto Shanghai 2024, the Lamborghini Urus SE has now been launched in Malaysia at a price of RM1,028,000 before taxes, duties and customisations.

The Urus SE is not a special edition model as some may have thought, but rather a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model based on the Urus S.

It features a new design, optimised aerodynamics, and a new hybrid powertrain that not only offers the highest output in its lineup but also reduces emissions by up to 80%.

Powering the Urus SE is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 620 PS and 800 Nm, paired with an electric motor on the rear axle generating 192 PS and 483 Nm. When combined, the powertrain generates total of 800 PS and 950 Nm.

With an 8-speed automatic transmission, it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.1 seconds faster than the Urus S) and achieve a maximum speed of 312 km/h (7 km/h faster than the Urus S).

Six existing driving modes from the Urus S (Strada, Sport, Corsa, Neve, Sabbia, and Terra) are now accompanied by four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS) modes: EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge.

In EV Drive, a 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery located under the floor and above the rear differential provides a driving range of over 60 km and a maximum speed of 135 km/h.

Depending on the driving mode selected, the vehicle’s air springs adjust for ground clearance, with travel ranging from 15 mm in Corsa up to 75 mm when the lifting system is activated.

Styling-wise, the Urus SE sports a new bonnet with a floating design, as well as newly designed matrix LED headlights, bumper, front grille, taillights and diffuser. The addition of a new spoiler increases the rear downforce by 35%, while new under-body air vents and revamped air ducts improve air cooling by 30%.

The cabin has also been updated, now featuring a larger 12.3-inch screen, as well as new seats and dashboard. The mechanical pushbutton panel gives a more tactile feel.

Needless to say, Lamborghini offers a wide range of customisation options. For instance, there are three dedicated P Zeros tyre, from 21 to 23 inches, to meet customers’ different requirements for comfort and sportiness.

Customers can also choose from over 100 exterior colours (including two new colours, Arancio Egon and Bianco Sapphirus), as well as 47 colour combinations and four types of embroidery for the interior.

Proton introduces 5-star after sales rating initiative

PROTON has announced the commencement of a 5-Star Rating initiative to further raise the level of after sales service for customers at its outlets nationwide.

The new initiative recognises Proton dealers who have achieved an outstanding level of after sales service and is an extension of the Proton Operational Excellence (POE) initiative that was begun on March 6, 2024.

The new rating is awarded to dealers based on their POE score and Service Quality, encouraging all outlets to achieve and maintain a high level of customer service and satisfaction.

Service Quality is evaluated in two categories, namely Speed and Compliance, and these are then measured over six focus areas. The end goal is for outlets to manage customers concerns effectively and to deliver the best customer experience.

Proton’s POE initiative emphasizes adherence to a thorough list of requirements such as service process, technician competency, stock inventory and customer management.

“It was launched with the primary aim of enhancing the business performance of outlets and improving the operations efficiency of service centres nationwide,” the company says in a statement.

Each outlet is assessed on a monthly basis and the results shared with all dealers to clearly indicate where they stand within the network.

The automaker’s After Sales Division works closely with the outlets to proactively raise their service levels and scores with quarterly roadshows also held to give recognition to top achievers as well as reinforce standards by the sharing of best practices.

With the beginning of the 5-Star Rating initiative, five dealerships will be awarded the top accolade every month, marking them out as centres of excellence for after sales and customer service.

To ensure parity and buy-in from its network, KPI’s for the initiative are set based on feedback from all outlets as well as after benchmarking of best practices from other OEMs.

To mark the commencement of the 5-Star initiative, a launch event was held at Melinau Auto in Kuching, one of the top three Proton outlets to be recognised for meeting all the requirements to earn the new accolade.

Following the launch the 5-Star Initiative, the list of outlets to obtain the ranking will be published on Proton’s corporate website, www.proton.com, accompanied by a distinctive badge for dealership recognition.

VEP mandatory for Singaporean cars entering Malaysia from Oct 1

All foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia will be required to have a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tag starting October 1 this year.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the move is to ensure compliance with road regulations in the country.

He added that the rule will be enforced at the entry points of both Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes in Johor, namely at Sultan Iskandar Building in Tambak, Johor and Sultan Abu Bakar Building at the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.

Effective October 1, enforcement action will be taken against anyone driving a foreign motor vehicle without a VEP as required under Section 66H (7) Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

The law provides a compound or a fine of not more than RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months upon conviction.

Yusof Mat Isa/Malay Mail

“The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has the authority to stop any foreign vehicle that does not have a VEP from entering Malaysia.

“Enforcement of the VEP allows us to track foreign vehicles coming and leaving Malaysia and if there is a (traffic) summons, it has to be settled before the vehicle leaves the country,” added Loke.

Loke said the VEP registration had been implemented since April 2019 for foreign vehicles crossing at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Building in Johor, but the regulation was not enforced.

Based on records, about 70,000 Singapore-registered motor vehicles have activated the VEP tags from more than 200,000 vehicles registered, he said.

The process of obtaining the VEP has been made easier with the RFID VEP tag being delivered to the applicants at their respective addresses.

Loke said that a fee of RM10 is imposed for each VEP tag, which is valid for five years.

Perodua might need a third factory for its EV production

PERODUA is currently evaluating the construction of a new plant by 2025 to support the production of the new generation Myvi, as reported by Wapcar.

As you might have known, the new generation Myvi will also feature a fully electric (EV) variant.

At present, Perodua operates two plants located in Rawang. The first plant, Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PMSB), currently produces Alza, Aruz, and Myvi, along with the Toyota Veloz under contract.

The second plant, Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PGMSB), currently manufactures Axia, Bezza, and Ativa. The third plant is referred to as the ‘BEV plant’ for electric battery vehicles.

At the same time, Perodua is exploring other options. An alternate plan is to collaborate with other manufacturers on a contract basis.

Speaking during the public unveiling of the Perodua EMO-1 concept last week, its President and CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said, “I cannot disrupt the current plants. They are operating at over 300,000 units (per year).”

“As I mentioned earlier, our target is to produce around 340,000 to 350,000 units. This already exceeds our normal capacity.

“So, I cannot disrupt the current plants. This EV (battery) is something we have to consider to build a new plant, or seek a partner, who has the capability in Malaysia to enable us to carry out the installations,” he added.

The new generation Perodua BEV is being developed independently, without technical assistance from Daihatsu.

Starting from scratch, this project is being carried out in collaboration with three local universities and electric vehicle conversion experts from Australia, namely EV North.

Led by chief engineer, Puan Jehan Adnan, this project utilizes a prototype with support from 60 local vendors, ensuring that Malaysia has a supply chain for domestic EV production.

Based on the Myvi, this prototype is equipped with a 55.7kWh battery pack giving it a driving range of up to 350km.

It features a single electric motor at the front wheel with an output of 161hp and 220Nm of torque.

It is understood that the first Perodua EV model is planned to be launched by the end of 2025 with a price not exceeding RM100,000.

Toyota GR Supra production to end in 2026, Magna Steyr plant lays off 500 workers – report

THIS is an unpleasant news, as you only have a two-year window to acquire a Toyota GR Supra grand tourer model before production ceases in 2026.

This is due to reports from Automobilwoche stating that vehicle manufacturer Magna Steyr, based in Graz, Austria, will lay off approximately 500 workers after the production of several key models like the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, and the Fisker Ocean comes to an end.

For your information, the same factory is also utilized to assemble the non-identical twin models BMW Z4 and Toyota GR Supra since 2019. Carscoops quoted Vice President of Toyota Motor North America, Dave Christ, who explained, “we collaborated with BMW, and it has been a success.”

He further added, “we will reassess the situation going forward. I think, if we want to build something, we will think about how to do it.” These statements suggest that Toyota is likely to develop a new generation of the GR Supra independently or potentially engage in a partnership with a different manufacturer.

The Toyota GR Supra is a high-performance mass-produced car created by Toyota Gazoo Racing, following its previous offerings of limited production models under the sub-brand GRMN (Gazoo Racing Meister of Nurburgring).

It comes in two engine versions, a 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 258 hp and 400 Nm, or a 3.0-liter inline-six engine generating up to 382 hp and 500 Nm, powering the rear wheels.

Initially, the GR Supra was only available in an automatic version, with a specially developed manual transmission becoming available in 2022, limited to inline-6 engine Supra models.

Toyota to assemble Hilux BEV in Thailand by end-2025

Toyota is currently testing the battery-electric Hilux BEV to assess its performance as it prepares to commence the production of the truck in Thailand by the end of 2025.

According to Reuters, Thailand is a critical market for Toyota, with pickup trucksmaking up more than half of total vehicle sales. The company also has a large manufacturing plant in the country.

“Our intention is to be producing the Hilux BEV over here,” Pras Ganesh, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Asia told Reuters.

Ganesh did not provide any details on pricing or production volume for the Hilux BEV, which would be Toyota’s first electric pickup truck offering.

He added that the pickup truck will be primarily targeted at the Thai domestic market but Toyota will also consider exporting the model.

The Japanese automaker is testing the Hilux BEV for various use cases in different road and temperature conditions.

“The more range I have to put on it, the more battery I have to put on it, which means the weight of the vehicle also becomes significantly heavier, which means the loading can be much less,” Ganesh said.

“So ‘Is it going to meet the customer’s usage needs?’ is always our biggest issue. We are always trying to understand what they do,” he added.

Meanwhile, Toyota’s closest rival Isuzu Motors also plans to assemble its electric D-Max pickup truck in Thailand.

Tan Chong to launch first Nissan e-Power model in H2 2024

EDARAN Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) recently showcased the Nissan Kicks e-Power at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024.

Khoo Cheng Pah, Chief Executive Officer of Edaran Tan Chong Motor, confirmed that the company will launch their first e-Power model in the second half of this year.

The specific model to be launched has not been disclosed, but there are rumors suggesting that ETCM will introduce the Serena e-Power.

E-Power is a Nissan’s hybrid technology that integrates internal combustion engine with an electric motor. It offers an immediate throttle response as the latter can generate maximum torque instantaneously.

With this technology, the engine is only utilised to generate electricity, while the wheels are 100% driven by a high-output motor.

The main components of e-Power include consists of a Lithium-ion battery, a high-power electric motor, inverter, generator and a combustion engine with class-leading thermal efficiency.

Unlike conventional self-charging hybrids where the wheels are primarily and directly driven by the engine, the e Power’s intelligent control system regulates engine operation independently based on factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, degree of acceleration and battery charge levels.

As a result, the driving experience is quiet and refined with less frequent engine operation compared to conventional hybrids.

At low to medium speeds, such as in urban areas, the vehicle is mainly driven by the electric motor powered by the lithium-ion battery for an EV-like performance.

When driven at high speeds where rolling noise is elevated, the engine runs at optimal RPM to generate sufficient electricity to power the motor, and when strong acceleration is required, the motor combines the electricity generated by the engine and the electricity from the lithium-ion battery to power the vehicle.

Like EVs, e-Power also offers the convenience of single-pedal driving where brake pedal operation can be reduced by nearly 70% through regenerative braking which can slow the vehicle while replenishing the battery.

Porsche 911 hybrid arrives – Carrera GTS guise, 3.6-litre, 0-100 in 2.9s

THIS is big news. Despite only a facelift, the Porsche 911 is now entering a new era. This is because the sports car has received a hybrid for the first time in its history.

As we reported earlier, the Porsche 911 will become a hybrid, and it arrives to update the 992 generation (called 992.2) in the Carrera GTS variant.

For 2025, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS retains its identity with the rear-mounted flat-six engine, but now with an electric motor and an electric turbocharger. This boosts power to 532hp and 608Nm of torque.

The engine used is a new 3.6-liter unit replacing the previous 3.0-liter one. This engine alone produces 478hp and 569Nm of torque. The hybrid system replaces the previous twin-turbo package with a single electric turbocharger.

It functions like a traditional exhaust-gas turbocharger but with an 11kW (14.7hp) motor positioned between the turbine and the compressor. This motor can spin the turbo very quickly for a fast response, drastically reducing turbo lag. It can also send power back to the 400-volt battery.

There is also a generator motor of 32.6hp sandwiched between the flat-six engine and the 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Both are powered by a very small 1.9kWh battery located under the front hood.

The T-Hybrid powertrain is designed to enhance performance at all rpm ranges while operating at the ideal air-fuel ratio of 14.7:1 at almost all times. This hybrid also means no more manual transmission for the 911 Carrera GTS.

This new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is heavier than the previous model, partly due to standard features like rear-wheel steering, but the additional power overcomes this weight increase. It is also the first Carrera GTS capable of accelerating to 100km/h in less than 3 seconds, specifically 2.9 seconds.

In addition to the T-Hybrid, the 2025 Carrera GTS receives a new active aerodynamic flap at the front for better cooling without compromising drag. There are also cosmetic changes on the front and rear, as well as new wheel options.

The rear tires are wider now, measuring 315/30/21, while the front remains at 245/35/20. Inside, the biggest change is the fully digital instrument cluster. Yes, no more analog tachometer needle.

The base 911 (992) Carrera 2025 receives turbos and an intercooler from previous GTS and Turbo models. This provides an additional 9hp while torque remains at 448Nm.

For 2025, only the Carrera and Carrera GTS receive facelifts, while other variations such as Turbo, GT3, GT3 RS, and GT2 will follow later. The Porsche 911 992.2 2025 is expected to arrive towards the end of this year.

Ducati wins the prestigious “Red Dot: Best of the Best” award with the Diavel V4

The Ducati Diavel V4 has been awarded “Best of the Best” in the Product Design category at the 2024 Red Dot Awards. This recognition, among the most illustrious at an international level, every year celebrates excellence in the world of design and confirms the uniqueness that characterize the motorcycles designed and created in Borgo Panigale.

Founded in 1955, the Red Dot Award celebrates the most original and deserving proposals for style and innovation. The award is given by a jury of experts in product design, communication design and design concepts, who this year gave the Diavel V4 the important title of “Red Dot Award 2024: Best of the Best”, the highest recognition of the competition, reserved exclusively for creations capable of setting a new standard in the benchmark sector.

This award represents the latest in a series of successes recognized for Ducati design. The same award was in fact obtained by the 1199 Panigale in 2013, by the XDiavel in 2016 and by the Diavel 1260 in 2019, demonstrating how a Ducati motorcycle can combine Style, Sophistication and Performance in an unmistakable way.

With its refined style and muscular and elegant lines, with masses visually concentrated on the front and an agile and slender rear, with fine details such as the footrests and the retractable passenger handle, the Diavel V4 stands out as an authentic style icon in the motorcycle design scene.

The V4 Granturismo engine is a distinctive element both for style and performance of this motorcycle, whose bold aesthetics are enhanced by unmistakable elements, such as the spectacular LED lights, the imposing 240-section rear tyre on the machined five-spoke alloy rear wheel, and the eye-catching four-way silencer.

Almost two years after its presentation, the Diavel V4 has obtained recognition from the most authoritative institutions in the field of design and the international press.

Among the recognitions stand out the prestigious Good Design® Award, the oldest global recognition in the design sector, and the Special Mention at the German Design Award 2024, assigned by the German Design Council.

The 2024 Red Dot Award ceremony will be held on June 24th in Germany, at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. The award winners will be exhibited in the Red Dot museum in Zollverein, also located in Essen and now part of the UNESCO world heritage.

Application for RM200 monthly diesel subsidy opens today

Application for the Subsidy Assistance Program BUDI MADANI, involving private diesel vehicle owners, small farmers, and small commodity planters, will open today (May 28, 2024).

Qualified recipients will receive BUDI MADANI assistance of RM200 per month in line with the implementation of diesel subsidy distribution.

Second Finance Minister, Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said, private diesel vehicle owners meeting specific eligibility criteria can apply under the BUDI Individual category.

While small farmers and small planters can apply under the BUDI Agri-Commodity category.

“The follow-up implementation statement to the Prime Minister’s National Address by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week regarding the Cabinet’s decision to implement diesel fuel subsidy distribution involving consumers in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

For the BUDI Individual category, applicants must be Malaysian citizens, own registered private diesel vehicles with the Road Transport Department besides luxury vehicles under 10 years old.

The owned vehicles must have active road tax and individual or spouse annual income of RM100,000 and below.

As for the BUDI Agri-Commodity category, applicants must be registered as small farmers or planters with relevant agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) or the Ministry of Agriculture and Commodities (KPK).

Applicants should be active commodity small farmers or planters with annual agricultural sales between RM50,000 and RM300,000.

“Each application received will be cross-checked with data under the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDNM) to exclude luxury vehicle owners under 10 years old and high-income individuals (T20),” he said.

Applications can be made online at the website https://budimadani.gov.my, which will be open throughout the year.

For applications made and approved before June 3, the first BUDI MADANI will be received by mid-June, with subsequent assistance distributed monthly.

While for applications approved after June 3, the first BUDI MADANI will be received within two weeks and subsequently on a monthly basis.

BUDI MADANI will be credited to the recipient’s bank account every month, while recipients without bank accounts can claim BUDI MADANI in cash at any National Savings Bank (BSN) branch across Peninsular Malaysia.

Amir Hamzah said that the BUDI MADANI Program complements the Government’s existing efforts in targeting diesel subsidies through the MySubsidi Diesel system managed by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

So far, nearly 90,000 fleet cards have been issued to companies in the public land transport sector and the land freight transport sector.

“As frequently emphasized by the Prime Minister, diesel subsidy distribution is among the fiscal reform measures under the MADANI Economic framework, to build Government financial sustainability and enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness.

“The BUDI MADANI initiative reflects the integrated efforts of the MADANI Government machinery to ensure that the diesel subsidy distribution mechanism is comprehensive, efficient, and effective, so that the logistics sector and the majority of the people are continuously protected,” he added.

BMW Concept Skytop features design traits from Z8 and 503

BMW enjoys showcasing their new cars at the Villa d’Este event. This year, they revealed the Skytop, a two-seater convertible that is said to be inspired by the Z8 and 503.

“BMW Concept Skytop is a unique model with an exotic design, following the tradition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design.

“It offers a combination of dynamic and elegant driving at the highest level, following previous models such as the Z8 or BMW 503.”

The relationship between the Concept Skytop and the Z8 is quite evident. The slim taillights with a shark-like nose are a clear inspiration from the early 2000s roadster. The sculpted hood design, small front lights, and upright rear deck also remind us of the 503 from the 1950s.

BMW did not provide any details or performance specifications, but if guessed, it might use a 4.4-liter V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive from the M8 Competition.

The theme, like the M8, continues to the interior. The dashboard seems to be taken directly from the 8-Series, with a digital instrument display, infotainment, and a central console as we usually see.

But the unique roll bar behind the seats looks truly exceptional for this concept, featuring a power window. The roof is also with a two-part mechanism that can be manually removed and stored in the trunk.

Although the Skytop looks like a concept that makes sense to be realized, we don’t feel it will be released officially.

BMW already has the 8-Series coupe and convertible, so there’s certainly no reason to produce a targa version like this, even though it looks so cool.
