Chris Bangle is a highly talented automotive designer who has a… well, talent for dividing opinions among car enthusiasts. In other words, you either love or detest whatever this American-born designer comes up with.
Bangle began his career with Opel in the early 1980s, but he first gained significant attention while serving as the chief designer for the Fiat Coupe in the early 90s.
Interestingly, he made the decision to leave Fiat to join BMW around a year before the Coupe was launched onto the market.
In Munich, many of Bangle’s designs received positive feedback from the market, although they also sparked controversy, leading some to launch a petition for his removal.
Regardless, any car designed by Bangle himself or cooked up under his leadership is sure to provoke a reaction.
Let’s take a look at seven of Bangle’s most iconic designs:
Fiat Coupe
While the Coupe was still in development, Fiat opted for Bangle and his team’s design over Pininfarina’s. The car features retro design elements such as round headlights, combined with contemporary features like the diagonal lines on its wheel arches.
BMW 5 Series (E60)
When Bangle first joined BMW, the automaker’s bread-and-butter models—3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series—sported conventional designs, all sharing a similar ‘face’ albeit in different sizes. Refusing to walk the same path as the ones before him, Bangle gave the fifth-generation 5 Series striking eagle eye-shaped headlights that remain iconic today.
BMW Z3
Although the Z3 was originally designed by Joji Nagashima, it has come to be seen as the first BMW roadster birthed under Bangle’s leadership. Its design is much tamer compared to its predecessor, the Z1, yet the Z3 still captivates with its long bonnet, short rear deck, and distinctive ‘shark gill’ air intakes.
BMW Z4
While the basic form of the roadster was retained, the Z4 exudes greater elegance than the Z3, thanks to a design technique known as flame surfacing, which blends sharp lines with smoother concave and convex surfaces. With the right lighting, you can discern the letter ‘Z’ formed by the diagonal crease between the front wheels and the doors.
BMW 7 Series (E65)
Similar to the 5 Series, Bangle steered the fourth generation of the 7 Series into new territory with a design inspired by the Z9 Gran Turismo concept car unveiled at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its rounded rear design elicited varied responses, leading to the coining of the term “Bangle Butt.”
MINI Hatch (R50)
Creating a new design is not particularly challenging for a designer of Bangle’s calibre; however, refreshing an iconic design without compromising its essence presents a different challenge. This was the daunting task faced by Bangle and his team with the Mini Hatch but they rose to the challenge.
Rolls-Royce Phantom
During his time at BMW, Bangle was also responsible for overseeing design operations of another brand under the BMW umbrella, Rolls-Royce. Under his supervision, Serbian designer Marek Djordjevic succeeded in crafting a modern Phantom without sacrificing the iconic timeless appearance that the affluent adore so much.
Recently at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) marked its revival with the launch of the Nissan Kicks e-Power.
The Kicks e-Power for the Malaysian market will be fully imported (CBU) from Thailand. This means we are getting the facelifted version of the crossover, which was originally launched in that country four years ago.
Although it is not the freshest product on the market, the Kicks offers something new: the e-Power powertrain. It features an internal combustion engine, but unlike conventional hybrids, the petrol mill serves only as a generator.
The wheels are driven 100% by an electric motor at all times, allowing you to enjoy a driving experience that is almost akin to that of an electric vehicle (EV) without having to get in a fluster about charging.
This is indeed appealing and certainly helps improve fuel efficiency; however, during a recent media test drive, I found three shortcomings.
Outdated exterior design
As mentioned, the Kicks e-Power is actually a product that is somewhat aged. This is evident in its exterior design, which appears rather dated when compared to its closest competitors.
Don’t get me wrong; its appearance is not unattractive, but it lacks any elements that might make it stand out in a showroom.
However, as you may know, appearance, design, and related matters are subjective. Not everyone desires a car that is overly flashy—some prefer a more casual and understated look.
Underwhelming interior
The interior of the Kicks is neat and simple, but like its exterior, it is beginning to show its age.
This is because the layout is approximately 95% identical to that of the Almera’s but Kicks does come with a more sophisticated gear knob that feels somewhat awkward to use due to its shape.
Additionally, the use of hard plastic finishes on the dashboard and door panels detracts from the overall appeal of this car. The rear passenger space also feels somewhat cramped, despite the fact that its wheelbase is 5 mm longer than that of the HR-V.
Reasonably spacious boot, but…
The Kicks e-Power features a boot space that is quite generous, offering 423 litres of capacity. Unfortunately, lift the boot floor and you will not find any spare tyre. Instead, there is a tyre repair kit.
Was the decision to exclude a spare tyre made for cost or technical reasons? It is plausible that cost played a role, as the car market in Malaysia is generally quite price-sensitive so there’s a chance that ETCM may have taken this step to ensure that prices remain competitive.
Technical factors also make sense, as hybrid powertrains like e-Power involve additional components, and some of these components may encroach under the boot floor where spare tyres are usually found.
The Tiggo 7 Pro marks the fourth model launched by Chery Malaysia, following the Omoda 5, Tiggo 8 Pro, and Omoda E5.
Like its three predecessors, the Tiggo 7 Pro plays a crucial role in Chery’s efforts to cement its brand presence in Malaysia for the second time. It enters the fiercely competitive C-segment SUV market, going head-to-head with well-established rivals like Proton’s X70 and the immensely popular Honda CR-V.
As a newcomer, the Tiggo 7 Pro faces significant challenges, as its closest competitors boast impressive credentials proven by encouraging sales figures. However, this Chinese SUV has proven itself capable of standing up to the competition.
What makes the Tiggo 7 Pro particularly compelling is its pricing, which falls below RM130,000. It offers exceptional value, especially in terms of features, performance, and safety, making it a worthy alternative for those seeking quality without breaking the bank.
Aesthetics-wise, the Tiggo 7 Pro may not be as striking as the 2025 X70 or CR-V, but it certainly exudes a stylish, mature image that is capable of appealing to professionals.
While it may not scream for attention, pleasant details such as the Mercedes-esque diamond studs in the grille, the full-width rear light, and tasteful blue accents on the front bumper help it stand out subtly.
The vehicle sports attractive 18-inch alloy wheels, which hide red brake calipers—an unexpected touch for a family-oriented SUV, yet appealing to those who has a desire for sporty touches on their vehicles.
Measuring 4,513 mm in length, 1,862 mm in width, and 1,696 mm in height, the Tiggo 7 Pro is slightly shorter than the X70 and CR-V but boasts greater height compared to both models. Its wheelbase spans 2,670 mm, matching that of the X70 but falling 30 mm short of the CR-V.
Despite its smaller dimensions, the Tiggo 7 Pro’s cabin feels remarkably spacious and accommodating for a family of five. The materials used throughout convey quality rather than cheapness, justifying the already wallet-friendly price tag.
You’ll find leatherette upholstery enveloping much of the dashboard, seats, and steering wheel, complemented by touches of wood trim and glossy black and aluminium accents.
Notably, the dashboard is accented with nice-looking faux carbon fibre trim, complementing the sporty image initiated by those red brake calipers.
In terms of features, buyers will find everything they could possibly desire in a vehicle of this market category. For example, the infotainment system and essential vehicle information are displayed on a sizeable 24.6-inch screen, which actually comprises two separate displays of 12.3 inches each.
Additional offerings include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Sony audio system with eight speakers, a 50W wireless charger, and ambient lighting with 64 colour options.
Convenience features such as dual-zone climate control, six-way power adjustments for the driver’s seat, four-way adjustments for the front passenger, a panoramic sunroof, and Keyless Entry with Walk-Away Auto Lock make for a comfortable and user-friendly driving experience.
Don’t let the Tiggo 7 Pro’s smaller footprint fool you; it’s well-suited for family use. The rear seats are spacious, providing ample thigh support and a comfortable seating angle. The conventional SUV body shape also grants generous headroom for taller passengers.
The boot space, while smaller than that of the X70 and CR-V at 475 litres, remains plentiful. If you need extra room, simply fold down the rear seats for a vast total capacity of 1,672 litres.
On the safety front, there’s no cause for concern, as Chery has equipped this SUV with a host of active and passive safety features, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Multi-Collision Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Traffic Jam Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, and more.
If that’s not enough, it also boasts seven airbags and a comprehensive 540-degree camera system complete with markers to assist drivers in tight spaces.
Despite its Chinese origins, the Tiggo 7 Pro does not compromise on quality; the camera displays are notably bright and sharp, outshining some of the more expensive SUVs on the market.
The design is appealing and the features provided are more than adequate but how does the Tiggo 7 Pro perform on the road?
Open the bonnet, and you won’t see much, as the 1.6-litre turbo engine and its associated components are neatly concealed beneath a large plastic cover.
That said, you won’t have any problem feeling the power as the four-cylinder engine produces 197 PS and 290 Nm of torque, surpassing the outputs offered by the three-cylinder engines found in Proton and Honda’s X70 and CR-V.
With a seven-speed DCT transmission driving the front wheels, this SUV is claimed to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 205 km/h.
Undeniably, the combination of engine and transmission endows the Tiggo 7 Pro with impressive acceleration, making it a joy to drive on wide-open motorways.
However, navigating busy city streets, I found the powertrain to be less smooth at times, with occasional jerks when initially pulling away.
According to Chery, the powertrain should achieve fuel consumption figures of around 7 l/100 km (14.2 km/l). In my mixed driving of both highways and urban areas, I recorded a consumption of about 8.9 l/100 km (11.2 km/l)—not too shabby considering the slightly aggressive driving style.
The suspension system is quite typical for a Chinese brand; it’s soft and comfortable, providing satisfactory shock absorption, which inspires confidence when tackling uneven roads.
Nevertheless, the softness of the suspension can make the Tiggo 7 Pro feel a bit precarious at higher speeds. While it handles corners well for an SUV, overly spirited driving can lead to the vehicle struggling to maintain composure.
In other words, I believe the Tiggo 7 Pro is better suited for relaxed and leisurely driving, even though it boasts a rather powerful engine and features aggressive design elements like red brake calipers and carbon fibre trim.
Conclusion
If you’re on the lookout for a versatile C-segment SUV that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro might just be your ideal choice.
While its design may not be the most eye-catching in its class, it makes up with an impressive list of features and satisfying performance.
Concerned about after-sales support? Rest easy, as Chery Malaysia offers a generous seven-year/150,000 km warranty, 24/7 free towing service, and a five-year complimentary service package for the Tiggo 7 Pro.
The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is finalising amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) to tackle the issue of Mat Rempit.
According to its Deputy Minister, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, the amendment aims to provide clearer definitions of dangerous acts by Mat Rempit, such as reckless motorcycle riding or participation in illegal street racing.
He added that the amendments are are intended to act as a deterrent for those involved in such activities.
He was replying to a question from Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis) regarding the most effective measures to curb Mat Rempit groups, whose stunts endanger themselves and other road users.
Hasbi said the amendments would also introduce harsher penalties for offences related to dangerous stunts and illegal street racing, adding that the proposal has been submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) for consideration.
“These measures are being taken to ensure that penalties imposed serve as an effective deterrent and preventive step against offenders,” he added.
On enforcement efforts to tackle Mat Rempit activities, Hasbi noted that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the police work closely, conducting joint enforcement operations, such as Ops Samseng Jalanan, involving various agencies and local authorities.
Additionally, he said that MOT, through JPJ, collaborates with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to curb the sale and modification of motorcycles that do not meet specifications.
“The government will continue to implement consistent and effective enforcement actions to address road offences, particularly illegal racing activities involving youths or the Mat Rempit phenomenon,” he added.

Proton recorded sales of 12,194 units (domestic and export) in November, reflecting a slight decrease of 4.7% compared to October.
The company stated that the decline is in line with the contraction in total industry volume (TIV) of 4.1% for Malaysian automotive sales.
This brought Proton’s year to date (YTD) total sales volume to 137,751 units, allowing the automaker to maintain its position as the second most popular brand in the national sales ranking.
The company estimates that its market share for November stands at 18.2%, leading to a YTD figure of 18.8% for the whole of 2024.
Sales of the X70 2025 model increased by 7.7% compared to October, with 1,065 units delivered, bringing its YTD total to 7,536 units.
Meanwhile, the X50, X90, and S70 ended November leading their respective segment for YTD sales.
The X50 continued to lead the B-segment SUV sales with 1,911 units delivered, bringing its total sales to 21,033 units to date.
The X90 retained its position as market leader for D-segment SUVs with a 13.1% month-on-month growth to 277 units, contributing to a YTD sales total of 3,246 units.
The S70, which made its maiden race outing in the 2024 Sepang 1000km and celebrated its anniversary on November 28, recorded sales of 1,312 units, bringing its YTD total to 17,512 units.
Meanwhile, the Saga recorded 5,916 units sold (YTD 66,094 units), while the Persona and Iriz recorded 1,394 units (YTD 17,325 units) and 319 units (YTD 4,762 units), respectively.
In addition to Malaysia, the Saga is also performing well in international markets. A total of 480 units of the left hand drive (LHD) Saga were exported to Egypt last month, a remarkable 300% growth compared with the 120 units shipped to the country a month prior.
To-date, 2,203 units of the Proton Saga have been exported this year, leading to total exports volume for 2024 already exceeding the number for the whole of 2023.
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has offered small relief to flood victims who are facing issues with lost or damaged physical road tax, grants or licence.
According to the department, these documents do not need to be replaced as they can all be accessed through the MyJPJ app.
JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that this is in line with JPJ’s transition towards full digitalisation in the future.
He added that by registering on the application, enforcement agencies such as JPJ can also verify the authenticity of the documents.
Meanwhile, individuals who do not yet have MyJPJ only need to register to access digital documents such as driving licences, road tax, grants, and the Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC).
“There is no need to worry, as those affected (by the floods) do not need to make replacements.
“The responsibility for determining the validity of licences or road tax lies with the enforcement agency itself, and we are also moving towards digitalisation,” he said.

The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) has announced that the Neta V has received a zero-star rating in an assessment conducted at the MIROS Provisional CRASE Crash Centre (PC3).
According to ASEAN NCAP, the Neta V is the first electric vehicle (EV) to be tested at the facility, as well as the first model to receive a zero-star rating under the ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 protocol.
Launched in Malaysia in October last year, the EV scored a total of 28.55 points, comprising 7.89 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 13.51 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP), 7.14 points for Safety Assistance (SA), and 0 points for Motorcyclist Safety (MS).
The Neta V, which is also marketed in Brunei, Indonesia, and Thailand, comes equipped with two airbags, a seatbelt reminder system for the driver, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard.
In the front offset collision test for the AOP category, the Neta V received no points as the driver received poor protection on the head, neck, chest, and right leg.
In the side impact test, it scored only 6.31 out of 8.00 points, as the crash test dummy received marginal protection for the chest. The absence of Head Protection Technology (HPT) resulted in a score of zero for this assessment.
In the dynamic assessment for the COP category, the Neta V performed well in both frontal offset and side impact tests. However, it received low marks for the installation of Child Restraint System (CRS). Although it is equipped with Isofix and a top tether, more than half of the CRS recommended by ASEAN NCAP were found to be difficult to install.
The electric hatchback also lacks features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
Making things worse, all evaluated technologies under the MS category, including Blind Spot Technology (BST), Auto High Beam (AHB), and Pedestrian Protection (PP), are also absent.

For the uninitiated, the term ‘defensive driving’ refers to a set of techniques and practices designed to reduce the risk of accidents while on the road.
However, defensive driving isn’t just about focusing solely on your own driving; a truly skilled defensive driver anticipates the behaviour of others and recognizes potential hazards on the road.
While there are numerous defensive driving courses available, you certainly don’t need to spend hundreds or thousands of ringgit to learn how to drive defensively. Instead, just follow these simple yet effective tips:
1. Ensure your driving position is correct
Many drivers overlook the importance of posture while behind the wheel. A proper sitting position not only helps prevent back pain and fatigue but also enhances your ability to control the vehicle in emergencies. So, adjust your seat and mirrors to ensure you are comfortably and correctly positioned for optimal visibility and control.
2. Look far ahead
It goes without saying that eyesight is crucial when driving. In defensive driving, your eyes should be engaged in scanning both the road and traffic conditions. A good practice is to look 10 t0 15 seconds ahead of your vehicle. The forward gaze allows you to identify potential hazards and traffic flows well in advance, giving you time to react accordingly.
3. Always keep an eye on your mirrors
Again, your eyes are your best allies when it comes to driving defensively. While it’s important to watch the road ahead, don’t forget to regularly check your side and rear-view mirrors. This will give you a comprehensive view of your surroundings and help mitigate blind spots, enabling you to make informed decisions swiftly.
4. Maintain a safe distance between vehicles
One common bad habit among drivers in Malaysia is tailgating. The irresponsible behaviour significantly increases the risk of accidents, as drivers often don’t have enough time to react to sudden stops. Always maintain a safe distance of at least three seconds from the car ahead to ensure ample reaction time.
5. Minimize distractions while driving
Many distractions can divert your attention on the road, including smartphones, infotainment screens, food, and drinks. To maintain focus, avoid using your phone and refrain from eating or drinking while driving. If you need to use a navigation system, ensure that you enter your destination before you start your journey.
You may assume that the Perodua Myvi is still the ‘King of the Road’. Sadly that is no longer the case, as the title has been taken over by the Bezza, which recorded sales of 56,735 units last year.
In addition to its affordable price and practicality (this small car boasts a boot space of 508 litres!), the Bezza becomes a Malaysian favourite due to its low maintenance costs.
In this article, we will explore the service costs for the Perodua Bezza 1.3 automatic up to a mileage of 100,000 km or five years of ownership:
10,000 km
The first service for the Bezza must be carried out at a mileage of 10,000 km. Three items need to be replaced: full synthetic engine oil 0W-20 (RM161.10), drain plug gasket (RM3.80), and engine oil filter (RM12.50). No labour charge is applied, resulting in a total amount to be paid of just RM177.40.
20,000 km, 50,000 km & 70,000 km
For these three services, owners must replace the same three items: full synthetic engine oil 0W-20, drain plug gasket, and engine oil filter; however, this time, a labour charge of RM44.00 applies. Including 8% SST (RM3.52), the total amount payable is RM224.92.
30,000 km & 90,000 km
At a mileage of 30,000 km and 90,000 km, Perodua will add a cabin filter (RM24.20) to the list of items to be replaced, alongside the engine oil, drain plug gasket, and engine oil filter. With a labour cost of RM61 and 8% service tax (RM4.88), the total cost is RM267.48.
40,000 km & 80,000 km
Now it is time for major service. This time, you will need to replace the engine oil, drain plug gasket for the engine oil, engine oil filter, air filter (RM103.20), transmission oil (RM109.50), drain plug gasket for the transmission (RM3.80), and brake fluid (RM26.40). The labour cost for this service amounts to RM165, resulting in a total of RM598.50.
60,000 km
The items to be replaced are the same as for the 30,000 km and 90,000 km services: engine oil, drain plug gasket, engine oil filter, and cabin filter. However, for the 60,000 km service, Perodua will use 4 litres of engine oil instead of the usual 3.5 litres. The overall cost remains the same at RM267.48.
100,000 km
After reaching six figures, you will need to fork out RM480.96 for a service involving the replacement of 3.5 litres of engine oil, drain plug gasket, engine oil filter, and spark plugs (RM220.40).
Conclusion
The total cost of periodic servicing for the Perodua Bezza 1.3 automatic is RM3,332.56 for a mileage of 100,000 km/five years of ownership. This means that, on average, owners will need to spend RM666.51 annually or RM55.54 monthly on servicing.
This calculation is crucial because, in addition to the monthly installments, customers should also consider service costs and other expenses such as fuel, insurance, and tolls before making a decision.
