Always hoping that ICE and manual transmissions stay relevant and don’t disappear. It’s more about balance than just power.

Mercedes wants to put big chunks of its budget into combustion engines

After realizing that their electrification goals may be too ambitious, Mercedes is now allocating a significant portion of their budget to internal combustion engines.

According to an interview with the German media Wirtschaftswoche, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius stated that ICE (internal combustion engine) technology “will persist until after 2030”. Significant investments are needed to ensure that these engines continue to comply with increasingly stringent standards.

Källenius mentioned that the S-Class and its facelift are expected in 2026, stating, “We have invested significantly more in updating the S-Class model with combustion engines than we typically do for a facelift.”

Mercedes’ goal is to ensure that their conventional engines are at the “highest level of technology”. Without significant investment in petrol and diesel engines, the luxury brand “will abruptly halt combustion engine sales around 2027 or 2028”.

Mercedes realized the need to acknowledge that the transition to EVs was not progressing as planned. Three years ago, they mentioned that PHEV and EV vehicles would represent approximately 50 percent of annual sales by 2025.

However, it seems unlikely. At one point, Mercedes stated they would be fully electric by 2030 in some countries “if market conditions allow”.

Now, their new goal is for PHEV and EV to represent half of sales by the end of this decade (2030). However, according to Källenius, the objective for carbon neutrality by 2040 remains unchanged.

Mazda CX-5 2.5T AWD: The letter T that makes it all – test drive

The writer did not expect that the 2024 Mazda CX-5 facelift would still be offered with the 2.5T variant, or its full name, the CX-5 2.5G Turbo AWD. It’s not that the writer didn’t want or like it, but there wasn’t really a need for a high-performance variant for the CX-5.

However, high-performance vehicles usually show up uninvited and unexpectedly, which is what makes them intriguing.

The writer had driven the old CX-5 2.5T a few years ago, but had not yet shared the experience here, so let’s follow the writer’s journey. We will also examine the updates and determine if it’s worth buying.

Simple appearance with hidden weapons

Interestingly, it is difficult to determine whether the CX-5 you see is the regular version or the turbo petrol one. From the outside, there is only an emblem at the back that reads “2.5T”. No fins, spoilers, decals, stickers, or large markings.

It’s like a hidden weapon. Looks ordinary, but if you mess around, here you go! Some people may like this, but not the Type R FK8 owners. It’s a ‘you know it if you know it’ situation.

The CX-5 still receives the facelift updates like the other variants, including a new front end, grille, paddle shifters, and the most noticeable change, the DRL graphics shaped like two Ls on each side.

It still looks sleek like the CX-5 we all know, just the mentioned updates make it slightly fresher for 2024. Is it enough to compete with the CR-V?

The 2.5T variant is also equipped with a 7-inch instrument display with new graphics, seats with cooling functions, Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity (wireless), a 360-degree camera, and wireless charging.

The writer also noticed a new Off-Road driving mode, in addition to the existing Normal and Sport modes. However, the infotainment screen in the middle with an 8-inch size feels a bit ‘stingy’, too small for a car like this. A 12.3-inch screen would be more fitting.

Power in mind all the time

Driving this Mazda CX-5 2.5 turbo petrol, the writer frankly admits that power is at the forefront of their thoughts. The 4-cylinder DOHC engine produces 228hp at 5,000rpm and 420Nm at 2,000rpm.

This is generous power, ladies and gentlemen. While the infotainment screen may be lacking, the power is abundant, surpassing the 2.5 naturally-aspirated (192hp and 258Nm) or the 2.0 (162hp and 213Nm) engines.

The 420Nm torque of the 2.5 petrol engine is almost on par with the 450Nm torque from the 2.2 diesel engine. However, the diesel model is only 2WD, while the 2.5 petrol is AWD, which the writer finds more balanced. The power is distributed more effectively, with both the front and rear axles receiving engine output.

Driving the CX-5 2.5T is quite straightforward. It’s quiet, can stay in any gear, even in 4th gear at 2,000rpm, and when you gently press the accelerator, it doesn’t need to downshift. The car continues to move forward smoothly.

The writer tested it on high-speed twisty roads in Karak and low-speed twisty corners around Jengka, Pahang. This high power can be seen as a safety feature, providing the confidence to overtake on highways. Less time is needed to be in the opposite lane. What do you think?

The handling is not as sporty as the Mazda MX-5 even though the CX-5 is much more powerful. It’s still an SUV.

However, it’s enjoyable to control the heavy and large body smoothly with braking while downshifting, steering inputs while releasing the steering, keeping the right foot on the pedal for positive traction in corners, and then gradually pressing the pedal to the floor when the road straightens.

Upshift as the rpm approaches redline, then repeat as the next corner approaches.

Yes, Mazda is equipped with G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) and the Jinba-Ittai philosophy. Both these elements provide controlled, precise, calm, and non-fatiguing driving, in the writer’s opinion.

Even though it ‘only’ comes with a six-speed gearbox, all gears are sufficient for powerful acceleration even with a heavy load (passengers and cargo), while allowing the engine to operate at reasonable rpms when cruising on highways.

However, the compromise for the abundant power is its fuel consumption. The writer can report that the Mazda CX-5 2.5T is not fuel-efficient. The writer struggled to achieve over 10km per liter. After around 1,10km of driving, the writer only managed 9.4km per liter (and a smile). AWD becomes more significant.

Earlier, the writer mentioned that the CX-5 2.5T now comes with an Off-Road driving mode. Although the pre-facelift version also had AWD, it did not have an Off-Road mode.

The writer had the chance to briefly test this mode on a sandy beach. The delivery of its power can be felt smoother and more relaxed. This mode should assist you in crossing mild off-road terrains without any incidents of tires ‘digging’ into the ground/sand.

Is it worth buying?

If you desire an SUV that appears modest but has the ability to outshine hot hatches at traffic lights, you should consider checking out this CX-5 2.5T AWD. It is a unique offering by Bermaz Auto Berhad, with hardly any close competitors.

It still maintains its power and capability, but the upgrades make it more current, sophisticated, easier to use daily, and safer.

All variants of the Mazda CX-5 2024 in Malaysia come with a 5-year or 100,000km warranty, with a complimentary maintenance package for the same duration and distance.

Nearly half of EV owners in the US want to switch back to ICE cars – study

Several years ago, vehicle manufacturers presented their plans to transition their model lineups to electric vehicles (EVs). Some even set dates for phasing out the production of oil-based vehicles (diesel and petrol).

However, many are now reassessing the future. Sales are dwindling, customer interest is waning, and now nearly half of EV owners in America are considering switching back to petrol. What is happening?

According to a study by McKinsey & Co.’s 2024 Mobility Consumer Pulse, they found that 46 percent of EV owners in the United States want to revert back to petrol due to inadequate charging infrastructure.

This figure is significantly higher than the global average of 29 percent who want to switch back to fossil fuels. 35 percent of global respondents said public charging networks are not good enough.

34 percent said the ownership costs of EVs are still very high, and 32 percent said EVs heavily impact their long-distance driving habits. As of May, the U.S. had 183,000 EV public chargers, but it is still insufficient.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021 allocated a $5 billion grant to build fast chargers, but the implementation is taking too long.

Other reasons given by owners for switching back to petrol include the inability to charge at home (24 percent), concerns about charging (21 percent), and the need for charging mobility (16 percent).

Only 13 percent said they dislike the driving experience. Some drivers prefer combustion engine vehicles, such as 18 percent in the U.S. and 28 percent in Germany.

Interestingly, Americans are not the largest group considering a switch back to petrol, but Australia, with 49 percent of EV owners. On the other hand, Japan has the lowest percentage, with only 13 percent of EV owners willing to revert to petrol.

Other countries with low percentages include Italy (15 percent), France (18 percent), Germany (24 percent), and China (28 percent).

This is the new Honda Freed, two engine choice and with waterproof interior fabric!

WHO still remembers the Honda Freed that previously entered the Malaysian market? The third generation of the Freed has just been launched in Japan with options for a 1.5-liter NA engine and a hybrid variant. Let’s take a closer look at the details.

The 1.5-liter petrol 4-cylinder engine offers 117hp and 142Nm of torque, with a CVT transmission sending power to the front wheels. There is also an option for all-wheel drive.

The hybrid variant is equipped with the e:HEV system, comprising a 1.5-liter engine producing 105hp and 127Nm, paired with an electric motor generating 121hp and 253Nm. This system is similar to the e:HEV found in the City and Civic models.

In terms of dimensions, this new Honda Freed measures 4,310mm in length, 1,720mm in width, and up to 1,780mm in height, with a wheelbase remaining at 2,740mm.

The design of the new Freed is more angular with flat surfaces on the body sides. The front end is more upright, featuring trapezoidal headlights and dotted DRLs. The central grille has only a small opening, while the lower apron is more open.

Visible on the side are sliding rear doors, and there are side lines drawn from the front lights passing through the door handles. Opting for the Crosstar variant provides a unique rugged appearance and styling.

The interior design also appears upright, emphasizing space and practicality. The instrument display is now digital, and the dashboard is wrapped in a fabric finish. According to Honda, the fabric used is water and oil repellent.

Depending on the variant, you can choose a 2+2+2 or 2+3+2 seating configuration, but the Crosstar variant only offers seating for five or six individuals.

The Japanese Honda Freed comes equipped with Honda Sensing safety features, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and more. The price starts at 2.5 million Yen (RM73,536).

Would it be interesting to bring this model to Malaysia? We believe it could be a choice for small business owners and weekend adventurers.

Aston Martin Valiant is a hardcore road-legal supercar with a manual transmission

ASTON Martin has unveiled a track-focused vehicle that is road-legal. Introducing Valiant, a supercar packed with aerodynamic packages and based on Valour.

It is powered by the desired heartbeat of Aston Martin enthusiasts, the V12 twin-turbo engine producing over 730hp. What’s even more intriguing, this engine is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. According to Aston, the Valiant model is inspired by their Formula 1 team driver, Fernando Alonso.

On the Valiant’s body, you can see a large front splitter, big rear spoiler, and a substantial diffuser. Its body is made of carbon fiber and shaped for optimal airflow.

21-inch magnesium wheels are wrapped in aero discs to enhance airflow, inspired by the Aston RHAM/1 that raced at Le Mans in the late 1970s. The brakes are 16.1 inches at the front and 14.1 inches at the rear.

There are several interesting components within the body. Valiant uses a 3D printed rear subframe, titanium torque tube, lightweight lithium-ion battery, all reducing weight by 51 pounds.

Its suspension is equipped with Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) dampers. According to Aston, this system “can adjust each damper in less than six milliseconds”.

The V12 twin-turbo engine in Valiant produces 735hp and 752Nm of torque. The manual gearbox is mounted at the rear for better weight distribution, along with a mechanical LSD.

As expected, the interior resembles a racing machine, where Valiant features a half-cage, Recaro Podium seats, and four-point harnesses. The dashboard trim is made of Alcantara and carbon fiber, with exposed gear knobs.

Only 38 Valiant units will be produced by Aston Martin, and each unit has been sold. But if you’re curious about the price, it’s around 2 million pounds (RM11.95 million).

Deliveries will commence in the fourth quarter of 2024; meanwhile, this Aston Martin Valiant will make an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month.

Vendor for EV plate number to be finalised – Ministry

THE development of special number plates for electric vehicles (EVs) is in its final stages, awaiting technical finalisation before the official launch.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government is in the process of appointing a vendor to oversee the implementation.

“We are currently finalising the technical aspects. Once this is completed, we will promptly make the announcement,” he told reporters at a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between Batik Air and Kia on a new private terminal transfer service.

Loke emphasised that while the adoption of these plates will initially be voluntary, new EVs will be required to bear them as a mandatory measure.

“For existing EV owners, they will have the option to switch to the new plates,” he said.

Previously, the Transport Ministry announced that all EVs across the country will eventually be issued special number plates beginning with ‘EV’ followed by the registered number and so forth (e.g. EV1, EV2).

The ministry also said the road tax pricing structure for EVs would undergo a thorough review.

The government intends to align its policies with the goal of promoting EV adoption in Malaysia as part of its sustainability objectives.

The special number plates are also said to incorporate RFID technology as an additional feature.

No specific timeline was given when these initiatives will be implemented.

Bugatti Tourbillon – 16 cylinders, 3 electric motors, 1,800hp, 0-100 in 2 secs

Although at first glance it may appear to be a Chiron, this is the Bugatti Tourbillon, a completely new model. The monocoque chassis, suspension, and engine are all new.

Let’s delve into the details and engine figures first. As reported earlier, Bugatti will be releasing a hypercar with a new 16-cylinder engine, here it is.

Behind the cockpit of this Tourbillon is the jam-packed 8.3-liter V16 naturally-aspirated hybrid engine capable of spinning up to 9,500rpm and producing 1,000hp on its own.

But this is not the Tourbillon’s overall output. This is because it receives hybrid assistance developed by Cosworth. There are two electric motors on the front axle, and a third motor at the rear along with the engine.

A 25kWh battery pack supplies 800hp to this electric system, making the total output 1,800hp. Combined with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, the Bugatti Tourbillon can accelerate to 100km/h in just 2 seconds.

Then, if you continue to press the pedal to the floor, 200km/h is reached in 5 seconds, and 300km/h in under 10 seconds.

A maximum speed of 380km/h is achieved in less than 25 seconds. Then, if you have the special Speed Key, the Tourbillon’s rear spoiler will ensure the car remains stable up to 444km/h.

Although more complex and more powerful, Bugatti states that the Tourbillon is lighter than the Chiron. It also uses an 800-volt system and can be driven up to 60km in electric mode.

Watch enthusiasts will notice that the Tourbillon showcases many mechanical components that require precision and high quality. It is equipped with electrically powered dihedral doors, and three analog displays for instruments designed by the watchmaker, Switch.

These displays are fixed on the steering column. In the center console, there is a row of aluminum switches, rotary knobs, and crystal buttons to start the V16 engine.

All of these are designed to give the Tourbillon a timeless look. In terms of external design, you will immediately recognize it as a Bugatti at first glance. This Chiron-like design is equipped with a diffuser that starts from the rear of the cabin, almost invisible from a normal view.

The air intakes in the front lamps channel air into large side air inlets, then the iconic horseshoe grille in the front ‘feeds’ air to the radiator while generating downforce.

The active rear spoiler, as usual, also functions as an air brake. The Tourbillon comes with a completely new suspension that is 45 percent lighter than the Chiron.

The Bugatti Tourbillon is expected to enter the market in 2026 with the first 250 units to be produced. Prices start at 3.6 million Euros (RM18.2 million).

Diesel subsidy: 180,000 commercial vehicle have yet to apply Fleet Card

ROUGHLY 180,000 commercial vehicles have not yet applied for the Fleet Card through the Subsidized Diesel Control System 2.0 (SKDS 2.0).

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Fuziah Salleh, stated that according to records, there are 389,000 registered commercial vehicles with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), but only 209,000 have applied for the Fleet Card in the SKDS 2.0.

“The total of 209,000 has been approved for diesel subsidy,” she said when approached by reporters. She explained that there are 33 vehicle categories, including 10 categories of public transportation such as school buses and express buses, while the remaining 23 categories involve vehicles for goods transportation and logistics.

“In the goods transportation category, there are 389,000 registered with JPJ, but only about 209,000 have registered to get the Fleet Card, meaning roughly another 180,000 have yet to register.

“Perhaps those who have not registered think they are not eligible or only have one or two vehicles and find it difficult.

“Actually, even one, two, or three vehicles are eligible, no need to have 20 vehicles in a company. As long as they fall under the 23 categories of listed goods transportation vehicles,” she advised applicants in those 23 categories not to worry as those who apply will qualify immediately.

She gave an example, if the Fleet Card application from five oil companies takes time to process, the applicant can keep the receipt and then receive a refund.

“When you have a Fleet Card, discounts are immediately available at the gas station,” she said.

Regarding claims that the RM200 subsidy is insufficient for commercial vehicles, Fuziah stated that no Fleet Card quota has been set for goods transportation vehicles so far.

“The targeting of diesel subsidies under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs is for companies and we use the Fleet Card system. It’s different from the other two,” she said referring to the Budi Individu or Budi Agri-Commodity system.

Toyota wants to make more sports cars for you, admits hard to work solo

For Toyota enthusiasts, they may be eagerly anticipating the emergence of new sports car models such as the successors to the MR2 or Celica.

However, Toyota cannot haphazardly spend money on research and development (R&D) for a product targeted towards a niche group.

Previously, Toyota has collaborated with Subaru to develop the GR86/BRZ, followed by BMW for the GR Supra/Z4. The Japanese brand is determined to release more sports cars, but they acknowledge the challenges of going solo in this endeavor.

Speaking to the Australian media, Toyota Gazoo Racing President Tomoya Takahashi stated, “the sports car market is shrinking in the future. We cannot sustain sports cars as a single brand, Toyota. Collaboration between brands will increase in the future.”

He further expressed, “this mission is not about helping manufacturers survive but to protect car enthusiasts. This is why we need to collaborate to share costs and subsequently implement sports car projects.”

Similar to a rapidly expanding restaurant, Toyota has a few new ‘menus’ that will be served to its customers. Among those on the list are the affordable FR coupe S-FR, the FWD hot hatch Starlet, the Celica coupe, MR2, and a Toyota GR GT3 race car prototype already spotted at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

However, before launching impractical sporty models, Gazoo Racing will likely introduce a lineup of high-performance SUVs tailored for families seeking more space.

Malaysia Airlines flight made emergency landing due to engine issue

Malaysia Airlines confirms that flight MH199 from Hyderabad to Kuala Lumpur made an emergency landing in Hyderabad after one of its engines experienced sparks of fire.

The incident occurred after the aircraft took off from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport early this morning.

Fisker recalls Ocean SUV before files for bankruptcy

Fisker may not be widely recognized by the younger generation today, but the company is among the earliest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers alongside Tesla.

However, recently, Fisker has filed for bankruptcy through Chapter 11 protection. This makes them the second EV company to do so after Lordstown Motors.

This news comes less than two weeks after Fisker issued a recall for nearly all 6,864 units of its Ocean SUV, related to an issue with the Motor Control Unit (MCU).

“Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic headwinds that have impacted our ability to operate efficiently,” Fisker wrote in a statement.

“After evaluating all options for our business, we determined that proceeding with a sale of our assets under Chapter 11 is the most viable path forward for the company.”

According to Fisker’s statement, the previously announced cessation of production operations will continue until further notice.

The company hopes to resume operations on a smaller scale, including paying employee salaries and benefits, maintaining some customer programs while selling assets, and restructuring debts.

Fisker was launched in Manhattan Beach, California in 2016 by automotive designer Henrik Fisker, who has since become the company’s chairman and CEO.

In year-on-year comparison, the total industry volume (TIV) last month saw a nine percent increase compared to May 2023, which recorded 63,158 units.

The association stated that the sales recorded in May 2024 were a result of a longer working month in May 2024 and steady performance by local manufacturers.

“From the beginning of the year until May 2024, TIV is eight percent higher at 328,901 units compared to the same period in 2023 with 303,575 units,” said MAA in a statement.

In May 2024, passenger vehicles recorded sales of 62,862 units, an 11 percent increase compared to the same month in 2023 with 56,448 units.

However, commercial vehicle sales decreased by 14 percent to 5,803 units in May 2024 compared to 6,710 units in the same month in 2023.
