Always hoping that ICE and manual transmissions stay relevant and don’t disappear. It’s more about balance than just power.

Suzuki Jimny 5-Door launched, 340mm longer, same engine, RM200k

We all know and love the Suzuki Jimny – a compact four-wheel drive vehicle that is perfect for outdoor lifestyles. Now, there is another option, the Jimny 5-Door. Yes, a 5-door version.

It has been ‘stretched’ by 340mm from the 3-door version, making its length now 3,985mm. The wheelbase has also increased, now at 2,590mm. This means more legroom for rear passengers, while cargo space has increased from 85 liters to 211 liters.

In terms of mechanics, there are no changes, meaning it is still powered by a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine, with 102hp and 130Nm of torque. Transmission options are a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

The drive system remains the same, the Suzuki AllGrip which is a part-time 4WD with a transfer case for low range.

The Jimny 5-Door still has a ground clearance of 210mm, but the approach, departure, and break-over angles have been reduced.

In terms of styling, the Jimny 5-Door has a different grille with five slots. Other features are similar, such as round LED headlights, flared fenders, rear bumper-mounted tail lights, 15-inch rims, and a spare tire mounted on the rear door.

The interior is equipped with a rugged upright dashboard like the 3-door model, a four-seat configuration, and a larger 9-inch instrument panel.

Pricing for the longer Suzuki Jimny 5-Door starts at RM199,950.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro – When value meets perception

IT has been a year since the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro officially entered the Malaysian market. Although we have just received a test unit for evaluation, this segment-D SUV is not unfamiliar to Engear, as we previously conducted a brief test drive when Chery first arrived in Malaysia at the end of 2022.

Since then, for some reason, we focused on the Omoda 5 and Omoda E5. However, it is certainly not too late to thoroughly test the Tiggo 8 Pro. In fact, until now, we still receive inquiries about it, whether through social media DMs or during coffee shop conversations.

Attractive package, worth it?

One of the main attractions that led you to include the Tiggo 8 Pro on your list is its appealing price. It’s “only” RM159,800 for a seven-seater segment-D SUV.

And it certainly doesn’t feel cheap at all. You get high-end features such as a 2.0-liter turbo engine, three driving modes, full LED front and rear lights, 19-inch rims, a pair of 24.6-inch wide display panels with two screens, wood and chrome trim, leather seats, electronic gear knob, Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity, and a full ADAS package.

Not only that, everything you can see and touch feels premium and is worth its price, such as the wood and chrome trim on the dashboard and door panels, and switches and buttons with satisfying movements, and interior lighting.

If you were to scrutinize the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro in detail and later told someone that it was worth RM240,000, they might still believe it.

Not satisfied with that, the Tiggo 8 Pro can be equipped with automatic side steps for an additional RM2,999. These steps open automatically every time you open the door, just like in a Range Rover, which costs three or four times as much.

This is the cheapest non-national segment-D SUV, even cheaper than some segment-C SUVs. This makes the writer wonder how they can sell it at this price. Is there no profit at all?

Brand perception

However, it cannot be denied that there is a significant issue that balances the value offered above, that is brand perception.

We all know where Chery comes from, and if you are of the same age as the writer, growing up listening to Limp Bizkit and wearing Adidas Superstar on the weekends, you would certainly know that this is not Chery’s first time in Malaysia.

However, you must know that industrialization in China has progressed rapidly. They started later than Malaysia, but just look at their technological advancements today. And this also has an impact on the automotive industry.

You would likely agree if the writer were to say that vehicles from China can no longer be underestimated. They are now serious in the industry, striving to be the best, and developing rapidly.

For example, look at the mobile phone industry. Apart from their own brands, there are leading global brands that have opened manufacturing plants in China. Are the quality of their products different from those produced in other countries?

If you are truly interested in vehicles like the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, brand perception is indeed something you cannot avoid.

Ehem, Proton X90, how is it?

Oh yes, when talking about the Tiggo 8 Pro, you can’t avoid discussing the Proton X90 as well. The prices are quite close, ranging from RM123,800 for the Standard to RM152,800 for the Flagship.

The engines are different, with the X90 having a 1.5-liter turbo direct-injection (TGDI) powertrain with a hybrid system, while the Tiggo 8 Pro has a 2.0-liter turbo. Of course, the outputs are different, with the X90 at 177hp and 255Nm, while the Tiggo 8 Pro offers 257hp and 390Nm of torque.

Both SUVs are in the same segment, similar in size, and both can accommodate seven passengers.

Which one to choose? In terms of design, the writer finds the Tiggo 8 Pro to be more stylish overall and with more attractive details. However, you certainly get better value for the X90, as its price is lower due to its national car status (even though both SUVs are designed and developed in China).

Okay, the X90 may not be 100 percent developed in China, as Proton engineers have provided input for the suspension tuning. This is why the Proton X90 has a multi-link rear suspension compared to the Geely Haoyue.

The X90 also benefits from lower road tax, but if you need power and frequently carry many passengers, you might be willing to spend more and choose the Tiggo 8 Pro.

Solid and high-quality feel

Even more enticing, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro feels very solid, sturdy, and high-quality. Whether examining the exterior details, simply sitting inside the cabin, or driving it, all these aspects give you a premium feeling.

For example, on the exterior, there is an illuminated front logo, automatic side steps as mentioned earlier, and just the right amount of chrome trim, not excessive. The cabin is spacious and the front seats are very comfortable. The first time the writer sat in the driver’s seat of the Tiggo 8 Pro, it felt like being in a car that costs twice as much.

Then, the high dashboard and center console reinforce the premium feel of this SUV. At the same time, all buttons and switches are easily accessible. As for driving, the writer felt that it has more than enough power for daily driving. The writer gained good confidence in handling this Chery Tiggo 8 Pro even on sharp corners.

Only the steering wheel feels a bit light, but the gas pedal and transmission are all quite responsive and have good tuning. In terms of fuel consumption, the writer recorded around 9.9km per liter, considered very good considering the size and driving style of the Tiggo 8 Pro.

Of course, such fuel consumption is not very suitable for daily city driving, unless you can afford it. But it is perfect for taking the family on weekend outings outside the city. Overall, the package offered by the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is quite appealing with a combination of size, features, and price. This makes the writer excited to see the future Chery models. Perhaps we will also test drive the recently launched Tiggo 7 Pro.

Did the diesel technology came from the Gobek Api of the Malays?

Diesel engines with their more compact, rugged mechanical components capable of delivering more torque make them a suitable choice for heavy vehicles.

This technology was designed by the German designer and mechanical engineer Rudolf Diesel, after conducting extensive thermodynamic research and testing to achieve greater efficiency compared to petrol engines.

Diesel engines use compressed air to ignite the fuel, unlike petrol engines that use a spark or ignition system. The story and development of this are recorded in history books, yet the original inspiration for Diesel to conceive this technology remains unknown.

In a discovery reported by the New Straits Times, Diesel seemingly may have drawn inspiration from the blowpipe, a primitive tool used in the Southeast Asian region.

It consists of a closed cylinder or tube on one side and open on the other, with a piston attached that can be pressed into the cylinder.

The portion of the piston that enters the cylinder must be rounded and airtight to create a vacuum with pressure when the piston is pushed in or pulled out.

At the “face” of the piston, there is a small recess to accommodate a flame that will not be extinguished when the piston is pushed in. Initially made from wood, animal horns, or bamboo, the blowpipe was small in size – 7cm to 15cm – to fit into pockets.

The rapid compression of air when the piston is pressed into the cylinder causes a sudden increase in the internal temperature to 260 degrees Celsius, enough for the flame to ignite with a spark. This flame can then be transferred before being blown to ignite a larger fire.

So, what is the relevance of the traditional blowpipe’s operating principle to the modern diesel engines we know today?

A History from the 19th Century

Moving back a bit, in the late 19th century, Carl von Linde, an engineer, returned to his homeland in Germany after traveling extensively.

He had visited various places, including the Malay Peninsula. As a renowned faculty member at Munich Technical University, he was supposed to present his findings to the entire faculty and students.

During the lecture, he paused for a moment and took out this small wooden tool from his pocket to light a cigarette. He called it “ein Feuerkoben” and it was a gift from someone he met in Penang.

He pressed the piston and the inner flame ignited. He took the ember and lit his cigarette. For most students there, it was merely a matter of lighting a fire from a wooden tool.

But for Diesel, who was present and was one of the top students in Linde’s class, the concept made him wonder if the same thermodynamic principles could be applied to ignite fuel in combustion engines.

The chemical equation involving pressure, volume, and temperature states that when pressure increases in the same volume, the temperature will also rise.

This same reaction became the operating principle of Diesel engines when air is compressed to ignite the fuel, hence eliminating the need for spark plugs like in petrol engines.

From 1983 to 1987, Diesel continued to develop his idea at Maschinenfabrik-Augsburg AG (later known as Maschinenfabrik-Augsburg-Nürnberg or MAN). He began testing prototypes and successfully demonstrated a diesel engine with an efficiency of 26.2 percent.

So, did the blowpipe truly serve as inspiration for MAN trucks and buses as well as other diesel engines we recognize today? It remains vague, but what is clear is that Diesel was the one responsible for connecting the blowpipe concept with heavy machinery engines.

2025 Ducati Panigale V4 – Lighter, quicker, no more single swing-arm

Ducati has unveiled the seventh-generation Panigale at the World Ducati Week event in Misano, Italy. The iconic superbike has been refreshed in terms of its cosmetic, performance, and technical aspects. Its new design features a fresh aero package with a four percent lower drag, reminiscent of the style from the 916 and 1098 models.

The distinctive single-sided swingarm that has been the machine’s identity since 2018 has been replaced with double-sided arms made from shell-cast aluminum with large cutouts to showcase the 17-inch rear rim.

The new suspension reduces lateral stiffness by 37 percent, enhancing grip and rider feel when cornering, while also shedding 3.8kg in weight.

As for aesthetics, the fierce front headlight has been replaced with a sleeker design akin to the Desmosedici-RR. Mirrors are now integrated into the front fairing for easier removal during track days.

The rear section has been slightly elongated to avoid the need for a long license plate, providing more space for the rider to position their body during directional changes on the track. Powering this new Panigale is the 1,103cc Desmosedici Stradale V4 engine, now Euro5+ rated and 1kg lighter than before.

The engine features a counter-rotating crankshaft to reduce inertia, with peak power now achieved at 500rpm higher. The output stands at 224.9hp and 124Nm of torque, courtesy of the lighter 6.6kg Akrapovic exhaust system.

The bike’s suspension system comes from Ohlins, utilizing the NPX-30 fork and TTX 36 shock absorber. The wheels are aluminum, wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP V4 tires.

The 2025 Panigale is equipped with Brembo Hypure brakes with 330mm discs. Other features include a 6.9-inch color TFT display, six-axis IMU system, Traction Control, Wheelie Control, Launch Control, Quickshifter, and the Race eCBS brake system.

Koenigsegg Gemera with 2.0L 3-cylinder engine is not happening, clients prefer the V8

KOENIGSEGG surprised the world by announcing the Gemera engine with a three-cylinder. This is a departure from the usual V8 engines associated with the Swedish manufacturer.

The powerful 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine, combined with electric motors, did not attract many Koenigsegg customers. They are more interested in the V8-powered Gemera.

The CEO, Christian von Koenigsegg, revealed in an interview about the cancellation of this three-cylinder engine. He mentioned that they are not completely abandoning this technology.

Christian stated that they will continue to develop this engine, which may be used in the Gemera or other versions. However, the V8 engine seems to be more popular, unfortunately.

The 2.0-liter engine named Tiny Friendly Giant is part of a hybrid system consisting of the three-cylinder unit along with three electric motors. This package provides a total output of 1,700hp and 3,499Nm of torque.

The four-seater supercar can reach 100km/h in just 1.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 400km/h.

For now, the Gemera will only be offered with a V8 engine, according to Christian, who is not surprised by its popularity.

The V8 5.0-liter twin-turbo engine produces 2,300hp and 2,750Nm of torque using E85 fuel. Production is scheduled to start at the end of this year, with deliveries expected to begin early next year.

Only 300 units are planned for production.

2024 Maserati Grecale now open for booking in Malaysia, two trims, from RM635k

The latest 2024 MASERATI Grecale is now open for booking in the Malaysian market. Those interested can choose between two variants, namely the GT starting from RM634,889 or the Trofeo starting from RM1,100,000.

Grecale GT

The Grecale GT is still equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine with a mild hybrid BSG system. This package delivers a total output of 300hp at 5,750rpm and 450Nm from 2,000 to 4,000rpm.

This output is transmitted to all wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox and an AWD system with the option of a rear limited-slip differential (LSD).

The acceleration performance is 5.6 seconds for 0 to 100km/h, while 0-200 can be achieved in 23.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 240km/h. The Grecale GT is also equipped with double-wishbone suspension at the front and multilink at the rear.

There are options for active and adaptive shock absorbers as well as air suspension. The brakes are 350mm at the front and 330mm at the rear, with 20-inch rims.

Grecale Trofeo

Meanwhile, the Grecale Trofeo is a more powerful variant, with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, generating 530hp at 6,500rpm and 620Nm from 3,000 to 5,500rpm.

The transmission is the same, with an all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. However, the Grecale Trofeo comes with standard electronic rear LSD.

The higher output allows the Grecale Trofeo to accelerate to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, and to 200km/h in 13.8 seconds. The maximum speed is also higher, at 285km/h. Air suspension comes standard for the Trofeo.

The brakes for the Grecale Trofeo are 360mm at the front and 350mm at the rear, with 21-inch rims. Other standard features of the Maserati Grecale 2024 include the Vehicle Dynamic Control Module (VDCM) with four modes: Comfort, GT, Sport, and Off-Road.

The 2024 Grecale also comes with a 12.3-inch display for the driver’s instruments and another 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The third screen is 8.8 inches for additional controls.

The audio system is still Sonus Fiber, as before, with 21 speakers, in addition to Saffionao leather trim on the dashboard and door panels. All Maserati Grecale models in Malaysia also come with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty, which can be extended to ten years.

Mazda CX-5 2.5T is great and fast and all, but there’s 3 issues – Test drive

WE have driven the performance variant test of the CX-5, with the 2.5T turbo petrol engine delivering 228hp and 420Nm of torque, alongside the all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

Undoubtedly a unique offering from Mazda, with no clear close competitors, it provides more options besides naturally aspirated petrol and diesel.

However, due to demand, we also list some issues or problems with this Mazda CX-5 2.5T. Yes, as good as the car is, even though it’s advanced and powerful, issues can still arise. We have identified three main issues.

You’ll be loved by petrol station owners

Being loved is usually a positive thing, right? But that’s if you’re loved by your parents, loved by your wife. If you’re loved by petrol station owners, it’s not so great.

With the CX-5 2.5T, you will often visit petrol stations because this SUV truly gulps down petrol, unlike most of its competitors that just sip petrol. Throughout the writer’s experience driving this turbocharged CX-5 for over 1,000km, the writer could only achieve an average of 9.4km per liter. The writer tried very hard to achieve 10km per liter but failed.

It’s also enjoyable to experience the strong 420Nm torque, similar to a diesel, available as early as 2,000rpm, but with great power comes some sacrifices. Oh, the struggles…

The addition of the AWD and only six gears in the gearbox doesn’t help with fuel efficiency. Perhaps if Mazda offered this variant with an 8-speed gearbox, it would help achieve better fuel economy.

2. It looks too similar!

The second issue is that this 2.5T AWD turbo petrol version looks too similar to the other CX-5 variants. Obviously, we identify a car by its design and external identity.

With the CX-5 2.5 turbo, only the rear emblem with the red letter “T” indicates that this is the high-performance turbo petrol version. If you see this red “T”, just forget about poking fun at this CX-5, you’ll be way off the mark.

For owners who want to stand out a bit, they might feel unsatisfied with the too modest appearance of this CX-5 2.5T. Perhaps it should have larger rims with a unique design, additional red stripes on the front grille, or a rear roof spoiler. Anything that can make this performance SUV stand out more, Mazda knows better; the writer is not a designer.

3. A bit of identity confusion

The third and final issue is a slight identity confusion with this 2.5T CX-5. It’s not a significant problem, just that to the writer, this CX-5 is not quite an SUV, and not quite a sports car either.

It’s not as efficient (in fuel consumption) as other SUVs or other CX-5 variants, but it also doesn’t provide maximum satisfaction like driving a Mazda MX-5 Miata or Mazda3. This 2.5T CX-5 is too in the middle. No SUV satisfaction, nor true sports car satisfaction. Hence, the writer says it has a bit of identity confusion, not knowing which one it wants to be.

Conclusion

Those are the three issues the writer has experienced during the test drive of the Mazda CX-5 2.5T AWD. But there are many other great aspects about this model, which you can read about here.

And the writer still wants to thank Mazda for producing this unique performance SUV, even though there may not really be a need for it. It demonstrates Mazda’s capability and their identity of not caring about others; just producing enjoyable cars that will be appreciated by their fans.

Ford Super Duty will receive some sort of electrification

Ford will begin to introduce some electrification for their Super Duty truck lineup. This news may not be very significant for the Malaysian market as the model is not sold here, but for those of you following the developments in the automotive world, this is a sign of the direction of a major global manufacturer.

Ford announced that they will build a third Super Duty assembly plant at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada, which will start producing vehicles in 2026. This move will increase the production figure for the trucks to 100,000 units per year.

There are not many details available at the moment, but Ford stated that the Oakville plant will “pave the way to bring multi-powertrain technologies to the new generation of Super Duty trucks, giving customers more freedom to choose and support Ford’s electrification plan”.

We can infer that “multi-powertrain” refers to hybrid technology. However, whether it’s a plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid, or hydrogen fuel cell, we do not yet know.

This announcement comes as Ford, like other vehicle manufacturers, is reconsidering its future plans for fully electric vehicles (EVs). The Oakville plant was originally established to produce a three-row EV SUV.

Ford still has plans to produce this EV SUV, but has not decided when and where it will begin production. It was initially planned for 2025, then delayed until 2027. It could be delayed further.

Currently, the Ford Super Duty in North America is offered with the option of a 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine with 500hp and 1,626Nm of torque, as well as a 7.3-liter V8 petrol engine with an output of 430hp and 657Nm of torque.

“Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can’t meet the demand,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley.

“This move benefits our customers and supercharges our Ford Pro commercial business. At the same time, we look forward to introducing three-row electric utility vehicles, leveraging our experience in three-row utility vehicles and our learnings as America’s number two electric vehicle brand to deliver fantastic, profitable vehicles.”

Volvo Cars reports record core operating profit of SEK 8.2 billion in Q2 2024

Volvo Cars today reports an operating profit (EBIT), excluding joint ventures and associates, of SEK 8.2 billion for the second quarter of 2024, the highest-ever in a single quarter and an increase of 28 per cent versus the same period in 2023.

The corresponding core EBIT margin reached a record high of 8.1 per cent, versus 6.3 per cent in the same period last year. This improvement in the underlying profitability was a result of the company’s focus on pricing discipline, internal cost control and sustained growth in sales.

During the quarter, global retail sales rose by 15 per cent year-on-year to 205,400 cars. This was driven by the performance of the company’s electrified cars – both plug-in hybrids and electric cars – sales of which grew by 43 per cent in the second quarter, versus the same period last year.

48 per cent of Volvo Cars’ global sales volume during the quarter consisted of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric (EV) cars, while its EV-only share of sales rose to 26 per cent. The strong demand for the company’s electrified cars was demonstrated by the EX30 small SUV, which was among the top three best-selling EVs in Europe, while the XC60 plug-in hybrid continues to be the best-selling PHEV in Europe in recent months.

The EX30 has proved popular with customers in Europe and other markets. This has been reflected in Volvo Cars’ gross margins, which increased to 22.8 per cent from 19.0 per cent last year. Gross margins on its EVs reached a new high of 20 per cent in the period, demonstrating that Volvo Cars continues to make the transition towards electrification profitably.

Revenue for the second quarter came in at SEK 101.5 billion, versus SEK 102.2 billion reported in the same period last year. The slight revenue decline was due to reduced income from contract manufacturing and a normalisation of sales to rental companies. Volvo Cars’ core revenues from operations during the quarter, excluding income from contract manufacturing, remained stable.

“We delivered a strong second quarter performance in 2024 with record underlying profitability, demonstrating our ability to create value despite a complex geopolitical and economic environment,” said Jim Rowan, chief executive of Volvo Cars. “Our core operational momentum remains on a firm footing, thanks to the strength of our balanced strategy, product portfolio and our agility in responding decisively to headwinds.”

“Our brand and values around safety and sustainability, as well as our unique technology approach, continue to resonate strongly with customers,” added Jim Rowan.

The EX30, EM90 and EX90 are clear examples of where Volvo Cars is going, as it continues its journey towards full electrification. Together with its plug-in and mild hybrid cars, these EV models provide Volvo Cars with a balanced portfolio that serves as a clear bridge to an all-electric future.

This transition will not be a linear development. Many consumers are not yet able to go fully electric, particularly in areas with low infrastructure development or because of the early withdrawal of incentives by governments. These factors make Volvo Cars’ balanced line-up of fully electric, plug-in and mild hybrid models important as a bridge.

Volvo Cars continues to invest across the breadth of its product range, both in new models and ongoing improvements to existing ones. During its Capital Markets Day in September, Volvo Cars will reveal more details on its technological roadmap as well as forthcoming models and updates.

Yet like all global companies, Volvo Cars operates in a complex geopolitical environment that impacts trade and tests supply chain resilience. In the short term, potential tariffs from the EU commission affecting EVs from China will affect the EX30.

However, as the company previously announced, it will start producing the EX30 in its Ghent, Belgium plant next year, as part of its ‘Build where we sell’ strategy. The company aims to start production of the EX30 in Ghent during the first half of 2025, with volumes ramping up during the second half of that year.

Ongoing Ukraine war among the reasons in delay of Blackhawk deliveries

The ongoing war in Ukraine has become one of the reasons for the delay in the acquisition of UH-60A Blackhawk helicopters, according to Deputy Defense Minister Adly Zahari.

He stated that this matter was communicated by Aerotree Defence and Services Sdn Bhd, the company responsible for the helicopter leasing services acquisition contract.

“The approval process by the United States regulatory authorities has also been tightened for the modernization of technical specifications and avionics system integration on the UH-60A Blackhawk aircraft,” he said.

The work program timeline and the expected delivery of the aircraft to Malaysia have been reviewed and updated by the Slovak Training Academy and all involved parties based on the current supply chain conditions and the expected approval timeline by the US regulatory authorities.”

He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN-Tanah Merah) regarding the reasons for Aerotree Defence and Services’ failure to supply UH-60A helicopters to the Malaysian Army within the stipulated time and the ministry’s subsequent actions during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.

Adly stated that the company was supposed to deliver two helicopters on October 30, 2023, and another two on December 30, 2023. He emphasized that the Ministry of Defense viewed this delay seriously as it had an impact on the operation of the Army Air Forces helicopter units as outlined in the contract.

“Furthermore, if there is any delay in the delivery of these helicopters, the government, through this contract, will impose fines for the delays caused by the company. However, if the company still fails to make the deliveries according to the set dates, the ministry can also cancel this acquisition and re-tender as required by the contract,” he added.

This 20 years old Kia Bongo is still updated, receives modern equipment and EV variant

THE Kia Bongo is a small one-ton truck that has been launched since 2005, but it is still being updated for 2025. This fourth-generation model is being refreshed not for the third world market, but in South Korea itself.

Available in two- and four-door variants, the design of this Kia Bongo looks like it’s from the early 2000s, but this is indeed the 2025 version.

Standard equipment has been added, with the truck now equipped with power side mirrors, cruise control, and a fire extinguisher. Higher variants are equipped with chrome door handles and a new parking brake handle.

Specifically designed for small businesses, the Bongo comes with an automatic transmission, previously only available in manual. There are also options for two-wheel and all-wheel drive.

Despite being founded over two decades ago, it has received additional modern features such as heated/ventilated seats, start/stop button, and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen.

Safety features include Forward Collision Avoidance Assist and Lane Departure Warning. The engine remains the same, a 2.5-liter unit with an output of 157hp and 294Nm of torque for the automatic transmission.

The manual model has power of 136hp and 254Nm of torque. For those more environmentally friendly, the Kia Bongo is also offered in a fully electric (EV) version with an output of 181hp and 394Nm of torque.

It can be driven up to 210km. Prices start at around RM68,726 in Korea. It would definitely be interesting if it were sold in Malaysia, wouldn’t it?

Former BMW/Rolls-Royce designer murdered at home

IAN Cameron, the designer of BMW and Rolls-Royce, was tragically murdered at his residence in Bavaria on 12th of July. He was 74 years old. His wife, Verena Kloose, managed to escape from the house and notify the authorities, but the police were unable to apprehend the suspect.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news about our former Rolls-Royce designer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during these difficult hours,” said BMW in a statement published by Automotive News.

CEO of Rolls-Royce, Chris Brownridge, said, “Ian played a significant role in shaping Rolls-Royce from when it was first acquired by BMW Group and moved to its Home at Goodwood, West Sussex.

“During Ian’s tenure, he led the design team for all Phantom family and Ghost models, creating thoroughly contemporary motor cars that remained sympathetic to the marque’s design lineage. My thoughts are with Ian’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

Cameron was also part of the design team that created the BMW Z8. His most popular design was the Rolls-Royce Phantom 2003, which has influenced the design direction of every Rolls-Royce to this day. He was involved in the exterior design of the Range Rover L322 when the brand was under BMW.

However, Cameron’s career began at Pininfarina in 1975, and he had his own design firm after retiring from BMW. According to investigators, the murder suspect is believed to have been attempting to steal Cameron’s collection of luxury cars at his residence in Lake Ammersee.

The Times reported that the power to Cameron’s house was cut and the security cameras were disabled, so there is no recording of the attacker, but the German police are actively pursuing the case.

Pitch Black 2024 takes off, RMAF deploys a contingent

The Opening Ceremony of Exercise Pitch Black 2024 (PBK24) recently took place officially at the Darwin Convention Centre, Australia.

But what is Exercise Pitch Black 2024? Pitch Black is the largest exercise in the southern hemisphere organized by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and is held every two years.

This year’s edition is scheduled from July 12 to August 2, and it is said to be the largest ever held. It is joined by 20 countries from around the world with more than 140 fighter aircraft and 4,400 military personnel.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) also deployed a contingent this year consisting of three F/A-18D Hornets and an Airbus A400M. This is not the first time the RMAF has participated in Exercise Pitch Black.

First held in 1981, Pitch Black brings together various air forces from around the world for a series of exercises involving complex scenarios with fighter aircraft and support such as tanker aircraft, as well as control and early warning (AEW&C) aircraft.

Most aircraft will operate from RAAF Base Darwin, but there will also be aircraft operating from Tindal and Amberley bases.

The air forces returning to Darwin for Pitch Black 2024 are from France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

There are also air force units participating for the first time, such as from the Philippines, Spain, Italy, and Papua New Guinea. Some personnel from Fiji and Brunei will also join, as well as from Canada and New Zealand.

This exercise is not only anticipated by participants from the military but also eagerly awaited by aerospace and military enthusiasts in the Darwin area and beyond.

This is because they have the opportunity to see advanced fighter aircraft from various countries, which are not always present at Darwin base, such as the F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Falcon, F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, FA-50, Dassault Rafale, Saab Gripen, and Sukhoi Su-30.

The exercise involves various activities and situations that will test the skills of pilots and crews to work together with each other and with colleagues from other countries.

In addition, for the local community, the sidelines of Pitch Black involve an open day at Darwin Air Base and an air show at Mindil Beach.

For additional information, the RMAF contingent began their journey several days ago. They departed from Butterworth last week, made a stop in Kuching and Bali before continuing their journey to Darwin.

Some air forces also made Malaysia a stopover, such as the Italian air and naval forces, which stopped in Subang a few days before continuing their journey.

Among the aircraft taking part in the event are:

Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) – Boeing EA-18G Growler, F/A-18F Super Hornet, E-7A Wedgetail AEW&C, Lockheed Martin F-35A, C-130J Hercules, Airbus A330/KC-30A MRTT
