Pilot testing of AWAS using AI to detect speeding drivers on PLUS and KLK starting this June

Pilot testing of the Automatic Awareness Safety System (AWAS) using point-to-point methods will be implemented by June, reported Berita Harian.

This method will be used to detect drivers who exceed speed limits by measuring the duration and distance traveled, in addition to using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Initially, two highway locations will be selected for this pilot project: the route from Genting Sempah Tunnel to Gombak Rest Stop (KL-Karak Highway), and from Senawang Toll Plaza to Simpang Ampat Toll Plaza (North-South Highway).

The system will also be installed at locations where accidents frequently occur, such as the route from Menora Tunnel to Sungai Perak Rest Stop.

In an interview with Berita Harian, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport (MOT), Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan, stated that the system can detect drivers who violate speed limits if they arrive at their destination quicker than the estimated time.

“This system, installed at toll plazas, will record travel time based on distance.

“For example, if a driver travels from Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Malim, Perak, and arrives earlier than expected, the vehicle’s license plate will be detected and an automatic summons will be issued,” he said.

With the help of AI, this system can detect how long a driver stops at any location to extend their travel time to avoid detection.

He also mentioned that a company has been appointed to handle the proof-of-concept (POC) process without incurring financial impacts on the government.

Previously, Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that the AWAS camera system would be enhanced with the point-to-point method compared to the static method implemented earlier.

This is because the implementation of the AWAS cameras at present is seen as not achieving the goal of reducing vehicle speed and minimizing accident risks.

PLUS to begin trial of barrierless toll system this April

The Edge news portal reports that highway concessionaire PLUS Expressways Bhd will start a pilot trial of its own barrierless toll system beginning this April.

The Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, developed in-house, aims to prevent misuse and exploitation of profits during its implementation.

Additionally, the company will collaborate with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to impose penalties on users who fail to pay their outstanding tolls.

According to an industry executive, the objective of the partnership with JPJ is to ensure that users with outstanding toll payments settle their debts before they are allowed to renew their road tax.

The Edge also reported that PLUS has a unique advantage, as the company owns a subsidiary, Teras Teknologi Sdn Bhd, which currently provides electronic toll payment systems to other highway concessionaires.

In addition to PLUS, other concessionaires that have already begun trials of the MLFF system include Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) and Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat (ALR).

2.12 million cars to hit expressways during Christmas, year-end holiday

PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) has stated that it expects a 14% increase in traffic volume on its expressways, with the number of vehicles reaching 2.12 million per day compared to 1.85 million on normal days during the Christmas and year-end holidays from December 20 to January 2 next year.

In light of this, PLUS advises highway users to plan their journeys in advance and to obtain their digital travel itinerary via MyPLUS-TTA.

“This digital travel schedule aims to make it easier for people to plan their journey, as well as help distribute traffic for a smoother and more comfortable journey.

“It is also to prevent vehicles from accumulating in one location on the highway at the same time and possibly getting stuck in traffic,” the statement reads.

Alternatively, highway users can also access the latest traffic information through the Virtual Assistant – PUTRI, the X@plustrafik app, electronic signboards (VMS) at selected locations, or through major national radio station channels.

“The public can also contact the PLUSLine at 1800-88-0000 if they require assistance in case of an emergency. We also recommend using the PLUS app, Waze, or Google Maps to plan and check the current traffic status during this festive season,” it added.
