Powering the Countryman S ALL4 is a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that produces 204 hp and 300 Nm of torque. With an eight-speed automatic transmission and ALL4 all-wheel-drive system, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 228 km/h.

5 best EVs priced between RM150,000 and RM200,000

If you recall from last August, we listed the top five electric vehicles (EVs) available for prices between RM100,000 and RM150,000.

Notably, all five EVs in that list were from Chinese brands. However, this isn’t necessarily a drawback, as many EVs from that country offer impressive performance, technology, and features at affordable prices.

In this article, we present the top five EVs priced between RM150,000 and RM200,000, which still includes candidates from Chinese brands. But this time, there’s good news for those wanting to try EVs from European brands, as there are three models that may suit their preferences:

Volvo EX30 Plus (RM188,888)

Recently launched in the Malaysian market, the Volvo EX30 may not be entirely European, as it uses a platform made by Geely—also employed in the smart #1 and Zeekr X—and is assembled in China. However, it is undoubtedly a true Volvo.

The Thor Hammer LED lights signify that it is a Volvo, and the minimalist interior showcases various sustainable materials, which is in line with the brand’s strategy. For performance enthusiasts, you’ll be pleased to know that the Plus variant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. Want something faster? You can opt for the Ultra Twin Performance variant but that is priced above RM200,000.

BYD Seal (RM163,800 – RM199,800)

In this writer’s opinion, no EV list would be complete without BYD. Within the price range of RM150,000 to RM200,000, you can acquire the flagship Seal sedan, which is available in three variants: Dynamic, Premium, and Performance.

These variants differ in performance (with the Performance being the fastest at 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds) and range (the Premium can travel the farthest at 570 km). Interestingly, regardless of the chosen variant, buyers get a nearly identical list of features and specifications.

XPeng G6 (RM165,000 – RM185,000)

XPeng is a new EV brand from China introduced in Malaysia by Bermaz, alleviating concerns about after-sales service, as Bermaz is well-experienced in this area.

The G6 is XPeng’s first ever model available in Malaysia, offering a premium coupe SUV design along with advanced technologies such as the Smart Electric Platform Architecture 2.0 with an 800V architecture, the XOpera surround sound system, and XPILOT 2.5 safety features for well under RM200,000.

smart #3 Pro (RM175,000)

Similar to the Volvo EX30, the smart #3 could be seen as an Eurasian blend, combining technology from an Asian company (Geely) with European design (specifically German, as it was designed by Mercedes-Benz).

The Pro is the entry-level variant in the #3 lineup. At RM175,000, it offers good value for those interested in the smart brand as it packs 272 PS and 343 Nm of torque, can reach 0 to 100 km/h in a scant 5.8 seconds, and has a range of up to 325 km on a full charge, which is 10 km further than the #1 Pro.

MINI Electric Cooper SE (RM193,888)

This writer believes many readers of Engear TV are fans of MINI. The second generation of the MINI Electric Cooper is viewed as a more worthwhile investment, featuring not only a more modern design but also vastly increased power and range.

Launched in Malaysia last July, the new Cooper SE is powered by a single electric motor on the front axle, producing 218 PS and 330 Nm (an increase of 34 PS and 60 Nm), allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. With a larger battery capacity of 54.2 kWh, it provides a range of 402 km on a full charge, almost double the range of the previous model.

The 2024 MINI Countryman S Electric is modernized and environmentally-friendly while retaining its sporty characteristics

If your car is an expression of your style, the MINI is your perfect match. With its iconic design and sporty drive, it’s where fashion meets function.

These qualities shine in the latest MINI models like the new Countryman S Electric, combining iconic style and go-kart-like sportiness with a modern twist.

Eco-friendly material

In the latest generation, the MINI Countryman S Electric introduces fabric made from high-quality recycled materials, featured on the dashboard and door panels. This fabric, sewn with unique 2D techniques, offers a distinct, stylish appearance and a refined texture. The dashboard fabric also serves as a canvas for ambient lighting, transforming with each MINI Experience Mode to enhance the unique interior vibe.

If you’re concerned about maintaining this stylish fabric, rest assured—MINI designed it to be easy to clean. So, feel free to bring the kids along without any worries in your MINI Countryman.

Modern technology with classic look

The MINI Countryman S Electric is modernized with the first circular OLED display in any car. This high-resolution screen delivers crystal-clear information while seamlessly blending with MINI’s signature high-style aesthetic.

The OLED display also offers MINI Experience Modes, featuring themes like Vivid, Core, Go-Kart, Timeless, Balance, Trail, and Personal. Each mode creates a distinct atmosphere and driving experience to match your mood. For instance, if you’re feeling tired after work, you can switch to Balance mode for a more relaxing vibe.

If you love vintage and retro vibes, choose the Timeless mode, which features a display meter inspired by the classic MINI Cooper from Mr. Bean’s era. Plus, you’ll even hear sounds from the classic MINI through the audio system, adding to the nostalgic experience!

Agile like a go-kart

A MINI wouldn’t be a MINI without that signature go-kart-like handling, and the new MINI Countryman S Electric is no exception. Even as the largest MINI ever produced, it retains the iconic driving feel that makes every ride a thrill.

The suspension system and steering have been finely calibrated for agile and precise responses, ensuring a dynamic driving experience. The thick steering rims add to the excitement, inviting you to fully enjoy the drive in the Countryman S Electric.

With 313PS and 494Nm of torque from its dual electric motors, the ALL4 all-wheel drive system delivers instant acceleration and thrills. It rockets from 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds, ensuring a grin every time you accelerate from a traffic light or toll booth.

Overall, the MINI Countryman S Electric offers super-responsive acceleration, precise steering feedback, and a finely-tuned suspension, making it feel like a five-seater go-kart. You’ll find yourself eager to seek out corners where the regenerative braking system enhances the sporty handling, before effortlessly accelerating out with a smile.

Like other electric vehicles, the 66.5kWh battery pack in the Countryman S Electric is positioned under the chassis, lowering the center of gravity and enhancing stability in all driving situations.

Stylish, fun to drive, from only RM2,777 per month

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed test driving the new MINI Countryman S Electric. It’s stylish, eye-catching, and effortlessly handles both traffic jams and highway cruising.

Heading to a campsite or beach is a breeze with the Countryman’s higher ground clearance and rugged bumpers and side skirts.

This vehicle adds joy and excitement to your daily drive, making it anything but boring. With sustainable materials in the cabin and an electric power system that offers up to 433km on a single charge, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing you’re driving a car that contributes to environmental preservation.

MINI launches new generation Cooper and Countryman – EV and petrol, from RM194k

Today, MINI introduced not one or two, but four new generation models for the Malaysian market. Their names are quite similar, so let’s look at the brief facts for each model.

MINI Cooper SE

This is a fully electric MINI Cooper (EV). It comes with a 54.2kWh battery capable of delivering up to 402km of driving range. Its electric motor provides an output of 218hp and 330Nm, enough to accelerate this hatchback from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.7 seconds.

Among the key features of the MINI Cooper SE are the octagon front grille, 18-inch Night Flash rims, a steering wheel with 3D textile trim, a 240mm round OLED display with iconic toggle switches, MINI Experience Modes, Go-Kart Mode, Driving Assistant, and Parking Assistant Plus.

The MINI Cooper SE is priced at RM193,888 and is available in Blazing Blue, Nanuq White, Chili Red II, Legend Grey, Sunny Side Yellow, Midnight Black II, British Racing Green, and Melting Silver.

MINI Cooper S

As the name suggests, this is the most basic MINI Cooper model, a compact hatchback with a petrol engine. It can be said that this is also the most iconic model, but this new generation has been updated in every aspect.

It features a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 204hp and 300Nm of torque, paired with a 7DCT dual-clutch gearbox. It can accelerate to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of 242km/h.

Standard features of the Cooper S include the classic octagon grille, adaptive LED headlights, customizable signature lights with three modes, and 18-inch Slide Spoke rims. The suspension has also been tuned for agile driving, including special shock absorbers, high load stabilizers, and Servotronic steering.

Other features include a 240mm OLED display, Classic steering wheel, Head-Up Display, Comfort Package Plus, MINI Experience Modes, MINI Maps Package, and MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The price is RM279,888 and it comes in Ocean Wave Green, Legend Grey, Nanuq White, and Chili Red.

MINI Countryman SE ALL4

The next model is the electric SUV, the MINI Countryman SE ALL4. It features a 66.5kWh battery providing an output of 313hp and 494Nm of torque for its electric motor.

It can accelerate to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds, thanks to the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system, with a top speed of 180km/h.

Key features of the Countryman SE include adaptive LED headlights, an additional 6cm ground clearance, Favoured Trim with unique exterior finishes, 20-inch Windmill Spoke rims, recycled fabric interior trim, JCW seats, a 240mm OLED display, MINI Maps Package, MINI Experience Modes, and MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant.

It is priced at RM258,888 and is available in Smokey Green, Legend Grey, Nanuq White, Melting Silver, Blazing Blue, and Chili Red.

MINI JCW Countryman ALL4

Finally, there is the MINI JCW Countryman ALL4, a petrol SUV model. It is also the most sporty model as it carries the John Cooper Works (JCW) name.

The MINI JCW Countryman is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine producing 300hp and 400Nm of torque. Paired with the ALL4 drive system, it can reach 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Key features include adaptive LED headlights, red roof and side mirrors, black and red finishes on some body parts, JCW Performance Brakes, 20-inch JCW Flag Spoke rims, textile trim on door panels, JCW steering wheel, JCW sports seats, and grey-red finishes. The suspension is also specially tuned for the JCW with a wider track, adaptive JCW suspension, high-load anti-roll bar, and integrated brakes.

The MINI JCW Countryman ALL4 can be yours for RM389,888. It also comes in Legend Grey, Nanuq White, Midnight Black, and Melting Silver.

MINI Cooper SE now available with John Cooper Works Trim package

OWNERS of the new MINI Cooper SE looking to give their car a more menacing look will be happy to know that the automaker is now offering a John Cooper Works Trim package for the electric vehicle.

However, this package is limited to aesthetic changes, which means the Cooper SE retains the single electric motor setup with 208 PS and 330 Nm just like the standard version.

Well, not that it is in dire need of additional power as even with a rather modest output, the car only needs 6.7 seconds to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint.

Needless to say, the 54.2-kWh battery is also retained to give the Cooper SE a range of up to 402 km on a single charge. The battery pack that can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes via 95-kW DC fast charging.

Nevertheless, the JCW Trim package does make the Cooper SE look more aggressive on the road. At the front, you’ll find a high-gloss block finish on the radiator grille surround and logo as well as JCW-specific individual light signatures featuring two horizontal stripes as daytime running lights.

Also included are 18-inch wheels in Lap Spoke two-tone design with ten spokes, red JCW brake calipers, front and rear diffusers, hood stripes, as well as Chilli Red accents on the roof and side mirrors.

Similarly, the interior gets racing-inspired cues which include a black and red theme, JCW seats upholstered in synthetic leather with multi-coloured knitted material in the shoulder section, and 2d-knit on the door and the dashboard.

The central OLED display now has a JCW-inspired Go-Kart mode, which colours the display and interior lighting anthracite red and pumps go-kart sound into the cabin. This mode also optimises throttle response of the accelerator pedal.
