Petron Malaysia launches 2025 road safety campaign

In conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025 celebrations, Petron Malaysia, in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), launched the Road Safety Program at the Petron MRR2 station in Selayang.

The objective of this program is to enhance road users’ awareness of the importance of safe driving practices.

According to Shaliza Mohd Sidek, Head of Retail Business at Petron Malaysia, “Safety is indeed an important agenda at Petron. We have conducted specific programs in selected schools and universities, particularly in areas with high rates of road accidents and fatalities, to foster a more caring and responsible attitude among new drivers and riders.”

“At the same time, we are also establishing a strategic partnership with PDRM in the Go-To-Safety-Point (GTSP) Program, which has designated Petron stations as safe points for all customers and local communities in times of emergency.

“We hope today’s program serves as a reminder for everyone to remain vigilant and drive responsibly, especially as Hari Raya approaches,” she further stated.

Petron is also collaborating with strategic partners such as Carro and Rider Gate to offer free car and motorcycle inspections.

Gramp’s Asia is providing samples of fresh-scented botanical car sprays to raise awareness of micro-sleep, while IGL Coatings is supplying products for car windshields to enhance visibility and reduce eye fatigue.

Customers can also receive samples of coffee and roselle products from NesQ.

Since 2013, Petron stations have served as community assistance centers through the GSTP program, and in 2024, 54 Petron station operators were recognized by PDRM for their outstanding contributions.

Express bus drivers dropping off passengers in unauthorised areas will be fined on the spot

The Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) has warned express bus drivers not to drop off passengers in unauthorised areas.

According to its director, Stien Van Lutam, express bus drivers caught committing the offence will be fined on the spot.

He added that so far, two violations have been detected during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025 Special Operation, which was launched from 24 March to 8 April this year.

“JPJ personnel in disguise detected a 29-year-old bus driver who, while travelling from Ipoh to Sungai Petani, dropped off passengers in an unauthorised area or outside the bus terminal.

“Another 27-year-old express bus driver was also found committing the same offence while travelling from Alor Setar to Kelantan, in addition to overtaking on a double line,” he stated.

He remarked that dropping off passengers in prohibited areas not only endangers the passengers but also contributes to accidents and traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, Stien mentioned that the 14-day special operation involves 271 JPJ personnel throughout the state, whose leave has been suspended to ensure the smoothness and safety of road users, as well as in efforts to minimise the rate of accidents and fatalities due to road incidents.

He stated that the JPJ will continue to prioritise nine major offences, including failure to comply with speed limits, running red lights, overtaking in prohibited areas, driving in emergency lanes, and using mobile phones.

“Users returning to their hometowns are advised to remain patient while driving, not to let their emotions take over, and to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before starting their journey to avoid any unwanted incidents,” he said.

Runners found selling RM3.50 appointment slots for up to RM750, says PUSPAKOM CEO

PUSPAKOM chief executive officer Mahmood Razak Bahman revealed that there are middlemen (more commonly known as runners) profiting nearly RM750 by reselling appointment slots at its premises.

According to him, one of the tactics is to use the same chassis number but with different registration numbers to secure multiple appointment slots.

“One appointment slot costs only RM3.50, yet some are selling it for up to RM750. Investigations are ongoing with the assistance of the Road Transport Department (JPJ). We are looking into who is involved and why they are doing this, and we will call in these intermediaries,” he said.

Previously, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke stated that PUSPAKOM will no longer allow double inspection bookings for the same registration number after discovering that runners were selling slots to others at inflated prices.

The measure is taken to prevent misuse by intermediaries found selling inspection slots to others for excessive profits.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of JPJ, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said that they are seeking assistance from related agencies such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to determine the appropriate actions against the involved runners.

“We are trying to locate these runners, but currently, we have exhausted all communication channels, and they are uncontactable. We are looking for alternative methods,” he said.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently announced a recall campaign involving 41,688 vehicles.

In a press release, the department stated that this initiative aims to inspect the vehicles due to defects in their structure, equipment, or systems, in addition to preventing potential accidents.

According to JPJ, each affected owner will be contacted by their respective vehicle manufacturers to schedule an inspection appointment.

Any components associated with the identified issues will be replaced, and the cost of replacements will be borne by the respective vehicle manufacturers.

JPJ will also monitor the implementation of this recall campaign to ensure that all affected vehicles are confirmed as safe.

“JPJ Malaysia hopes that this initiative will facilitate the digital ownership of the Malaysian Driving Licence (LMM) without lengthy procedures, thus becoming part of JPJ’s efforts to reduce counter congestion.

“JPJ is always committed to enhancing the quality and standards of service delivery for the public,” he said.

JPJ launches Ops Khas CNY 2025, to focus on 9 main offences

The Department of Road Transport (JPJ) has launched the 2025 Chinese New Year Special Operation, which will take place over 20 days from 20th January to 9th February.

According to the department, the 2025 Chinese New Year Special Operation aims to monitor, detect, and take action against road users who violate traffic regulations or laws.

JPJ will focus on nine main offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), which are as follows:

  • Driving above the speed limit
  • Jumping the red lights
  • Overtaking on a double line
  • Driving on the emergency lane
  • Queue cutting
  • Using a mobile phone
  • Not wearing seat belts or helmets
  • Driving heavy vehicles on the fast lane
  • Overloading

At the same time, JPJ is also launching a road safety campaign themed ‘Pandu Cermat, Sampai Selamat’, which will see the implementation of methods and approaches for road safety advocacy through more than 30 programmes.

Among the programmes to be held are exhibitions, awareness talks, distribution of road safety kits, and advocacy programmes in collaboration with strategic partners, including the media.

In conjunction with the 2025 Chinese New Year, JPJ urges road users to always adhere to traffic regulations, ensure that their vehicles are in good condition, and plan their journeys.

JPJ officers to be equipped with bodycams for transperancy

The Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke has announced that the use of bodycams for Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel will be introduced to enhance the transparency of enforcement.

Loke stated that equipping JPJ officers with bodycams in the field would improve their effectiveness, particularly concerning heavy vehicles.

He added that the Director-General of JPJ, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, had previously requested that the department’s personnel be equipped with body cameras to ensure that the image, safety, and integrity of officers on duty are maintained at the highest level.

“… the use body cameras not only protects the image and integrity of JPJ but also safeguards the officers themselves.

“As I have mentioned before, sometimes our officers face criticism, humiliation, and various accusations. With the body camera, JPJ officers are protected, as any evidence during their enforcement actions can be captured,” he said.

Previously, JPJ Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations) Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi was reported stating that the use of body cameras for enforcement officers is essential to enhance integrity among officers and improve public trust.

He pointed out that the cameras would also prevent common misunderstandings that often arise during enforcement.

“(Discussions are underway) to secure immediate funding for the procurement, and I hope that JPJ officers will be equipped with the body cameras within this year,” he stated.

JPJ offers RM150 flat-rate for three offences over six-month period

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is offering a special flat-rate compound fee of RM150 for three types of offences over a six-month period starting tomorrow (Jan 3), said Transport Minister Anthony Loke according to Bernama.

He said the special compound payment covers certain types of JPJ summons notices, namely Summons 53A (AwAS Summons) for speeding violations or running red lights captured by the AwAS camera system, Notice 114 (Interview Notice) and Notice 115 (Sticker Summons Notice by JPJ).

“Payment for this special offer can be made through various channels, including JPJ counters and kiosks, public portals and the MyJPJ app,” he said at the launch of the department’s new office here today.

Loke said the special compound payments cannot be made via MyEG or Pos Malaysia.

“The regular compound rate for these three notices is usually RM300. We are introducing this special compound rate for six months, starting Jan 3, to allow people to settle their outstanding summons.

“There are two million outstanding AwAS summonses, and there are restrictions for those who do not settle them. This six-month special rate encourages individuals with unpaid summonses to pay them promptly.

“If they fail to settle these summonses, they will be unable to renew their driving or motor vehicle licences,” he explained.

Loke added that the accumulation of demerit points would be temporarily suspended from Jan 3 to June 30, during which the JPJ’s Enforcement Division would review the system’s implementation method.

JPJ Perak collects RM2.36 mil from ‘ANU’ series

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) of Perak reported that it collected revenue of RM2.36 million from the registration number series ‘ANU’ during the five days that bidding was open.

According to its Director, Mohammad Yusoff Abustan, the bidding was conducted through the JPJeBID system from 19 to 23 December, as announced in a public notice.

“During this five-day period, we also recorded more than 1,768 bidders out of 1.99 million registered bidders nationwide. The highest bid was RM269,000 for ‘ANU 1’,” he said.

He added that any remaining registration numbers that were not bid for would be made available to the public at the minimum set price.

So far, he stated, the ‘AMG’ plate, aimed specifically at fans of Mercedes-Benz AMG cars, remains in first place for sales of registration plates in JPJ Perak.

“Previously, ‘AMG’ had recorded a total sales figure of over RM6mil and still holds the record for the highest sales of popular plates,” he said.

RTD issued 5,306 offence notices during ‘Ops Khas Gempur Teknikal’

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 5,306 offence notices after inspecting 17,729 commercial and public service vehicles during a five-day Special Technical Raid Operation that concluded today, according to Bernama.

Transport Ministry (MoT) secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan said the notices involved vehicle detentions, inspection orders and for questioning.

“Additionally, out of this total, action was taken against 1,787 vehicles, with 16 seized, 15 of which were commercial and a public service vehicle.

“JPJ is not out to find faults by issuing notices; we only aim to ensure road safety and optimal road conditions. Notices are not issued arbitrarily,” he told reporters during the Special Technical Raid Operation at the Seremban Southbound Rest and Service Area (RnR) today.

He said a recurring issue with commercial vehicles, such as lorries and trailers, is using unsuitable or retreaded tyres on the road.

He said this issue is a key operation focus, ensuring brakes and tyres are in proper condition. Vehicles will be stopped from continuing their journey if violations are found.

“During checks earlier, we observed several vehicles using retreaded tyres with the outer layer nearly peeling off. Suppose these come off while on the road, it could pose significant danger to road users. This is precisely the situation we aim to prevent,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jana Santhiran said that JPJ has deployed over 1,500 personnel nationwide to strengthen enforcement of trade-related offences, including overloading, technical issues, documentation and traffic violations, particularly during festive seasons.

“We have increased the number of personnel. Previously, it was fewer than 1,000 officers, but now we have deployed them to highways, urban roads, and other areas, especially during festive periods,” he said.

He also advised all heavy vehicle drivers to place cones or road barriers when their vehicles stop in emergency lanes due to breakdowns to signal other road users.

“Recently, there have been several accidents caused by lorry drivers failing to use cones or place them behind their vehicles to indicate an emergency stop. I hope everyone pays full attention to road safety regulations,” he said.

No second drivers, JPJ issues summonses to 25 express, tour buses

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued summonses to 25 express and tour buses for not having a second driver for trips exceeding 300 kilometres (km) or four hours continuously during a special operation at three toll plazas in Penang.

JPJ said the operation started at 10 pm yesterday and ended at 7 am today, and was conducted at both sides of the Juru, Bukit Tambun and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah toll plazas.

“JPJ also compounded an express bus as the driver had no driving licences as well as a container lorry as the driver was underaged,” the department said in a Facebook post today.

The department also took action against 23 buses for not having driver’s logbooks or not maintaining them and one for not having a tour guide.

Overall, 273 summonses were issued.

Flood victims do not need to replace damaged or lost road tax, licence – JPJ

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has offered small relief to flood victims who are facing issues with lost or damaged physical road tax, grants or licence.

According to the department, these documents do not need to be replaced as they can all be accessed through the MyJPJ app.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that this is in line with JPJ’s transition towards full digitalisation in the future.

He added that by registering on the application, enforcement agencies such as JPJ can also verify the authenticity of the documents.

Meanwhile, individuals who do not yet have MyJPJ only need to register to access digital documents such as driving licences, road tax, grants, and the Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC).

“There is no need to worry, as those affected (by the floods) do not need to make replacements.

“The responsibility for determining the validity of licences or road tax lies with the enforcement agency itself, and we are also moving towards digitalisation,” he said.

Road blocks info, to share or not to share?

We are used to seeing information and updates regarding roadblocks or road closures being shared through mobile applications like WhatsApp and Telegram.

Automatically, we press the Share button to spread it to more people. Hopefully, it is beneficial, they say. Yes, it may be beneficial for some people. But should we share and help in informing about the existence of roadblocks?

Before that, let us examine its purpose first. Roadblocks can be set up for purposes such as road construction, closure of specific roads, law enforcement operations, and hunting down criminals.

We understand, you share and distribute information about roadblock operations due to law enforcement because there may be you or people around you with vehicles that are not roadworthy, expired road tax, non-compliant number plates, or have made certain modifications.

So, you share information about roadblock operations so that your friends and members of your car club WhatsApp group are not fined.

But, what if the roadblock is set up to track down criminals? When the criminal reads your sharing, they will divert to alternative routes or flee at different times.

Authorities fail to catch the criminal, and the case remains unresolved. Are you happy because you were not fined? If the criminal has just assaulted you, and they can escape because others shared information about the roadblock, are you still happy?

At this moment, we at Engear want to emphasize not to share information on the presence of roadblocks. There is no need to be overly caring or act as unlicensed reporters just to avoid friends getting fined. It could more so inconvenience the work of law enforcement agencies. Let’s make a change together!

Motorcycles with 150cc and above should be fitted with ABS as standard beginning 2025 – MIROS

New motorcycles with engine capacities of 150cc and above sold in this country must be equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) beginning January 1, 2025. This was stated by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS).

According to a report by The Star, this mandatory requirement follows a two-year study by the Ministry of Transport to address the increasing number of motorcycle-related deaths.

“ABS can reduce motorcycle accidents and deaths by up to 30 percent. It helps to prevent skidding so that riders do not lose control of their motorcycles,” said MIROS chairman, Dr. Wong Shaw Voon.

When asked whether ABS can be retrofitted to older motorcycles purchased before January 1, 2025, he said it depends on the model. Wong cautioned motorcycle owners not to install ABS if it cannot be done.

This system uses sensors on both tires to determine the wheel speed and ensure that the wheels do not lock, and these sensors act 10 times per second. This improves motorcycle stability and allows the rider to better control the motorcycle if the tires do not skid.

Currently, ABS is only offered on larger capacity motorcycles such as 400cc and above. However, there are also motorcycles with capacities between 160cc and 200cc equipped with ABS.

According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), it is estimated that one death occurs every two hours due to motorcycle accidents in Malaysia. In 2022, 6,080 people were killed in road accidents nationwide. Last year, the figure increased to 6,443.

Malaysia Traffic and Road Safety psychologist, Prof. Dr. Rozmi Ismali, outlined the drastic increase in motorcycle accidents among food delivery riders since 2020.

“Most of them have just finished school, and the quickest way to earn income at this time is to become a food delivery rider. Because they are still young, they tend to ride fast and violate traffic laws in order to make more deliveries in a day,” he said. Rozmi suggested that food delivery riders be given additional road safety training.

He said that training modules like this can cover mental and emotional aspects to become better motorcycle riders. “Incentives can also be given to delivery companies with a good safety record among their riders,” he added.

JPJ cracks down on tour buses, three drivers detained for having no license, failing drug test

In a major crackdown on tour and express buses carried out by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) today, two drivers were found to have no driving licenses while one was found positive for marijuana.

According to the Director of JPJ Enforcement, Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, they inspected a total of 22 tour buses in the operation that began at 6 am.

As of 9 am this morning, Kifli said they had detained two tour bus drivers for driving without a driving and a public service vehicle (PSV) license.

“These offences should not have occurred if the companies and drivers were responsible,” he said, adding that the department will impound the buses until the companies replace their drivers.

The integrated operation was conducted in collaboration with the police, the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MoTAC).

AADK also conducted urine tests on all 22 drivers, with one of them testing positive for drugs.

“The driver in his 30s was found positive for marijuana and further action will be taken,” he said.

Kifli said that they also found a Thai van that did not have an International Circulation Permit (ICP), while MoTAC identified three tour buses without tour guides.

He also warned tour and express bus operators to comply with road traffic laws.

Sultan Ibrahim acquires RM1.75 million ‘FFF 1’ number plate

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar has won the ‘FFF 1’ number plate with a record-breaking bid of RM1.75 million.

In a Facebook post, Sultan Ibrahim expressed hope that the proceeds from the bid, channeled to the Federal Government, can be used to benefit the people.

Last February, Sultan Ibrahim emerged as the owner of the special edition ‘GOLD 1’ vehicle registration number plate with a bidding value of RM1.5 million, which was the highest bid in the country at that time.

Last year, the ‘FF1’ vehicle registration plate also went to Sultan Ibrahim following a bid of RM1.2 million. In 2016, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was reported to have bought the ‘F1’ number plate for RM836,660.

The special FFF plate series was launched by Road Transport Department (JPJ) in May this year in conjunction with the celebration of the department’s 78th Anniversary.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook mentioned that the special plate series was open for bidding from May 11 and ended on the night of May 15, with the bid results announced the following day.

“The introduction of this new plate series is a continuation of the yearly JPJ anniversary celebration, having previously issued series like F, FA, FB, FC, and FF.

“Moreover, earlier this year, the GOLD plate series was launched, which successfully generated returns of RM17 million, so we hope that the FFF series can achieve a collection value of RM20 million,” he said.
