2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA debuts as an electric sedan, hybrid version to follow

With the A-Class sedan no longer on offer, the third-generation CLA-Class coupe sedan now bears the heavy responsibility of being Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level sedan.

Competing against the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, the CLA features larger dimensions, measuring 4,722 mm in length (+41 mm) and with a wheelbase now increased by 61 mm to 2,789 mm.

However, these dimensional changes primarily benefit the driver and rear passengers, who will enjoy more legroom.

Rear passengers, on the other hand, will have to contend with slightly reduced leg space.

To start, the CLA-Class is available in a fully electric (EV) version with two variants offered.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ with EQ Technology comes equipped with a rear-wheel-drive electric motor producing 268 hp and 335 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h in just 6.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 209 km/h.

Meanwhile, the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology features a dual-motor setup (349 hp/515 Nm) and an all-wheel-drive system, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

With an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, this entry-level electric sedan can achieve a range of 672-771 km, or up to 694-792 km for the 250+ variant.

The 800-volt electrical architecture provides DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 320 kW, allowing owners to add up to 325 km of range in just 10 minutes.

A hybrid variant is also expected to be introduced later, which will feature a 1.5-liter engine paired with a 1.3 kWh battery pack, 48-volt technology, and an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In terms of exterior design, the EV variant of the CLA features a grille panel adorned with a glowing three-pointed star, while the hybrid variant sports a more traditional grille structure.

The Mercedes star element is also incorporated into the front and rear headlight units.

Compared to its predecessor, the 2026 CLA has an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.21, thanks to its flush door handles, sleeker roofline, and more aerodynamic wheel designs (ranging from 17 to 19 inches).

To make the cabin feel more luxurious, Mercedes offers the MBUX Superscreen system, which includes a 10.25-inch instrument cluster display and a pair of 14-inch screens.

The MBUX Superscreen is powered by the Mercedes-Benz Operating System and features artificial intelligence capabilities, showcasing ChatGPT-4, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini.

In addition to its focus on screens, the 2026 CLA will also come equipped with a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, heated front seats, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and a single-zone climate control system.

For the first time, a Mercedes vehicle offers a front trunk (frunk) with a capacity of 71 liters, complementing the rear cargo space of 405 liters.

For fans of internal combustion engines (ICE), unfortunately you cannot enjoy this feature.

Toyota Crown Estate HEV & PHEV officially launched in Japan

The sixteenth generation of the Toyota Crown family is now available in Sedan, Crossover, and Sport versions.

Meanwhile, the Estate PHEV version is equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack that allows for a zero-emission driving range of up to 89 km.

Built on the TNGA-K platform, the Toyota Crown Estate measures 4,930 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, 1,625 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

The suspension system features MacPherson struts in the front, followed by Multi-link setup in the rear.

Driving dynamics are enhanced with the inclusion of a Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) system for more agile handling, as well as Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) to ensure passengers remain comfortable and enjoy a high-quality ride.

The exterior design of the Crown Estate follows the design language shared with its siblings.

The front features hammerhead shark-like elements with thinner daytime running lights, a neatly integrated grille structure in the bumper, and 21-inch wheels.

The cabin layout is similar to what is featured in the Crossover, Sport, and Sedan models, with a 12.3-inch cluster display paired with a similarly sized infotainment screen.

Using an island architecture, the dashboard layout is designed to minimize eye movement during driving.

The Crown Estate’s cargo space can accommodate up to 570 liters of goods, or up to 1,470 liters with the second-row seats folded flat.

2025 Mitsubishi Xpander HEV Play, injects sporty elements without power increase

In terms of appearance, not much needs to be changed on the Mitsubishi Xpander, as this minivan already boasts a sporty design.

However, in the Thai market, there is a far sportier version of the Xpander HEV, thanks to the addition of an aggressive body kit specifically designed for motorsport enthusiasts.

Named the Xpander HEV Play, this three-row MPV features enhancements to its front bumper, including larger air intakes and an integrated splitter.

The Dynamic Shield design element is given a black finish, complemented by the same treatment on the headlight housing and alloy wheels.

Meanwhile, the rear section comes equipped with a diffuser, roof spoiler, and clear lens light housing with a smoky effect.

The same offerings are also provided on the Xpander Cross HEV, where this crossover MPV can be distinguished by protective plastic wheel arch cladding, roof rails, and a different grille and front bumper finish.

For the Xpander HEV, color options include White Diamond or Graphite Gray, while the Xpander Cross HEV is offered in an additional Green Bronze color.

Despite its sporty appearance, the Xpander HEV Play (as well as the Cross variant) does not receive any power upgrades.

This means that the 1.6-liter hybrid engine still produces a total output of 116 hp and 255 Nm, driving the front wheels through an eCVT transmission.

Pricing starts at THB 981,000 (RM 128,626), which is slightly higher compared to the base model Xpander HEV.

Lamborghini’s first EV to offer up to 2,000 PS, 980-volt architecture

Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume has revealed that the first electric vehicle from Lamborghini could have up to 2,000 PS on tap.

The figure is significantly higher than the 1,341 hp (1,360 PS or 1 MW) touted by the Italian automaker when introducing the Lanzador concept car nearly two years ago.

As a refresher, the Lanzador is an electric grand tourer with a high ground clearance and a 2+2 seating configuration. It will serve as the basis for Lamborghini’s first EV, which is slated to enter the market in 2028.

The aforementioned substantial power increase may be attributed to “a joint electric kit that will benefit from synergies across brands” that the EV is expected to adopt.

He also added that the EV will be built on a platform that development of is being led by Porsche for Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche.

The platform in question is said to be capable of supporting power outputs of up to 2,000 PS and 980 volts for faster charging and improved energy efficiency. Currently, EVs under the Volkswagen Group use a 400V and 800V architecture.

Blume also confirmed that the EV will be produced at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata in Italy, although details regarding the battery are still under wraps.

Toyota FT-Me breaks cover, rival to Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-e

Alongside the C-HR+, Toyota Motor Europe has also introduced another electric vehicle, though this one is significantly more teeny and occupies only half a parking space.

Known as the FT-Me, it is a concept vehicle that embodies Toyota’s vision for all-electric micromobility that combines premium design with affordability.

The EV is indeed very small, measuring less than 2.5 metres in length and featuring just two seats. Its rather eccentric design is inspired by a jet helmet, and most components you see here are made using recycled materials, helping to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.

Battery specifications have not been disclosed but according to Toyota, its propulsion system consumes three times less energy per kilometre than a high-capacity battery electric car.

The propulsion system is complemented by solar panels on the roof that can add an extra 20 to 30 km of range, depending on weather conditions.

In addition to being small enough to fit in the narrow European streets, the FT-Me can be operated via hand controls, making it usable to wheelchair users without any aftermarket modification.

It is uncertain whether the FT-Me is intended for production, but Toyota states that the vehicle is designed for people with entry-level driving licences, including those as young as 14 years old in some markets.

This means that the FT-Me will be classified as a quadricycle, similar to the Citroën Ami and Opel Rocks-e, if it ever sees the light of day.

Toyota C-HR+ debuts in Europe, e-TNGA 2.0 platform, range up to 600 km

Toyota now has a new electric vehicle (EV) model, and it no longer uses the ‘bZ’ prefix seen in models like the bZ4X and bZ3.

Instead, it adopts the existing name, C-HR+.

Although it carries the C-HR+ name, this electric vehicle does not share the same platform as the standard C-HR; rather, it utilizes the e-TNGA 2.0 platform, which is the same as that of the bZ4X.

This is evidenced by its length of 4,520 mm and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, significantly larger than the second-generation C-HR.

For the European market, the C-HR is available in a single electric motor version with 165 hp, offering acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, a 57.7 kWh battery pack, and a driving range of 455 km.

A more powerful version produces 221 hp with a swift 0-100 km/h time of 7.4 seconds, accompanied by a 77 kWh battery pack that allows for a range of up to 600 km.

There is also an all-wheel-drive version equipped with two electric motors, generating 338 hp and achieving acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. With the same 77 kWh battery pack, this AWD variant can travel up to 525 km.

In terms of exterior design, the C-HR+ closely resembles the standard C-HR, with the exception of more streamlined taillights, a roof spoiler, and a ducktail spoiler at the rear.

Standard features for the C-HR+ include AC charging at 11 kW (or up to 22 kW) as well as DC fast charging of up to 150 kW.

To ensure optimal charging operation, the C-HR+ is equipped with a battery pre-conditioning system that can be activated manually or automatically.

Inside the cabin, there is a 14-inch infotainment display complete with physical control knobs, dual wireless device charging slots, and a mapping navigation system capable of identifying charging points based on the SUV’s driving range.

Finally, the C-HR+ is equipped with advanced safety features as standard, including a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive high beam assistance, and parking brake support.

Features such as a surround-view monitoring system and parking assistance are reserved for the more premium variants.

According to Toyota, the C-HR+ is set to launch in several selected European markets by late 2025.

“It’s a car, not a phone”: Volkswagen reintroduces physical control buttons

After several years, Volkswagen has finally admitted that the minimalist approach taken in the design of their vehicle cabins was a significant mistake.

This minimalist approach involved cramming all vehicle control functions into a central touchscreen and completely removing physical control buttons from the cabin.

In a report by Autocar, VW’s head of design Andreas Mindt acknowledged this mistake and promised to revert to a previous approach.

“Starting with the ID.2all model and beyond, we will reintroduce physical control buttons for the five most important functions – audio volume, temperature control for both the driver and passenger sides, airflow control, and hazard lights – beneath the main screen.

“This functionality will be reimplemented in every vehicle we produce. This time, we will not repeat this mistake.

“On the steering wheel, we will also bring back physical buttons. They provide feedback, create a real experience, and people will appreciate this feature.

“To be honest, it’s a car, not a phone,” he added.

The measures taken by VW are also a response to requirements set by Euro NCAP, which starting in 2026, will not allow a vehicle to achieve the maximum five-star rating unless it features physical controls for the horn, windshield wipers, turn signals, hazard lights, and SOS functions.

Since Tesla pioneered this minimalist approach, more manufacturers have attempted to follow the trend by offering simpler cabin layouts — meaning drivers must rely entirely on the screen to change necessary settings, especially while driving.

The situation has worsened with some vehicle models that do not have physical levers for turn signals, windshield wipers, or transmission.

In fact, in the name of cost savings, some manufacturers have even relocated window switches to the central console. While this creates a minimalist appearance, it ultimately complicates the user experience.

Police probe video of individuals driving recklessly on Genting road

The Bentong police have opened an investigation paper concerning a viral video showing a group of vehicle owners driving recklessly on the Genting Highlands road.

According to Bentong District Police Chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar, the video footage came to their attention after being shared by the public via private messages on the Bentong Police Facebook page.

“As a result of the investigation, the video clip was found to have been uploaded on social media.

“There are several recordings showing activities believed to be carried out by a group of vehicle owners driving dangerously on the bends of Genting Highlands Road, causing concern and anxiety among the community,” he said in a statement.

In response, Zaiham said that the police have initiated an investigation under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act (RTA) 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving in public.

He urged members of the public who witnessed the incident and have information to come forward to assist the police in their investigation.

He added that the police would take firm action and conduct integrated operations in the area, particularly during weekends and public holidays, when it is believed that vehicle owners tend to engage in disruptive activities that upset other road users.

Can you imagine a future for Volvo without wagons?

Honestly, we believe Volvo has been one of the best manufacturers of beautiful wagon designs since the first model (the Duett) was introduced in 1953, and that reputation continues to this day.

However, the expertise that Volvo is known for may not be needed in the future.

According to CEO Jim Rowan in an interview with AutoExpress, the future of Volvo will no longer include wagon models; instead, the brand will focus on sedan and SUV models.

This represents a significant shift for a brand widely recognized for its elegant wagon tradition over the years.

Rowan explained that it’s quite costly to introduce different vehicle models to the market and keep them there.

“It’s more cost-effective to drive higher volumes through the same platform and body style,” he said.

With the absence of wagon models, Volvo aims to position its existing SUV lineup with various offerings, such as the Black Edition and Cross Country, which are more tailored for specific customer segments.

Interestingly, this recent announcement comes shortly after a statement from Volvo UK’s commercial director, Robert Deane, who admitted that the decision to stop selling the V60 and V90 models in 2023 was a mistake.

“When you tell customers that a model (wagon) is no longer available, they will start looking for alternatives from other brands,” he added.

Undoubtedly, aside from Volvo, several other manufacturers, such as Audi and BMW, still offer wagon models, even though that market is dwindling year by year.

Further explaining Volvo’s direction, Rowan stated that the company is intentionally narrowing its focus at this time.

“We’re making very conscious choices about where we want to play the game. Where we’re differentiating is with SUVs; nice high ride height, very safe – and we think we can protect that beachhead against the competition.

“It’s much easier than us becoming distracted by too many models.”

For 2025, Volvo has already planned to introduce five new models, including the ES90 sedan and the upcoming EX60 electric SUV.

One thing is clear: wagons are no longer a priority for Volvo at this time.

First Xiaomi SU7 Ultra crashed on track

This isn’t the first time news of accidents involving Xiaomi’s electric sedan has been reported.

If you recall, last year a Xiaomi SU7 Max was reported to have skidded off the track due to an unsuitable braking system.

According to Xiaomi, the electric sedan is not designed for serious driving on the circuit.

So what about the fast sedan, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra?

According to Xiaomi, the SU7 Ultra, with specifications of 1,526 hp and a price tag of RMB 529,900 (approximately RM 324,000), is confirmed to be suitable for track use.

However, just a few days after the first small batch of SU7 Ultra vehicles was distributed to owners, one of them was reported to have skidded on the racetrack.

In a video that surfaced on the social media platform Weibo, the sedan was seen traveling at over 120 km/h on a straight section of the track.

However, the driver of the vehicle braked too late, causing the SU7 Ultra to skid off and collide with a barrier made of tires.

As a result, the hood, front bumper, fender, and headlight unit were severely damaged. Fortunately, the airbag deployed correctly, ensuring the driver remained safe.

According to Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi Auto, SU7 Ultra owners need to focus entirely on safety and are advised to undergo formal training before entering the track.

Despite the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra boasting a power output of up to 1,526 hp and 1,770 Nm of torque, those figures are limited to 900 hp with a maximum speed of 140 km/h for the initial 300 km driving range.

At full power, the SU7 Ultra can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.98 seconds before reaching a top speed of 359 km/h.

Proton sales up 13.2% to 11,232 units in February

Proton has announced its sales performance for February 2025, during which it sold 11,232 units of vehicles. The figure includes both the domestic market and export sales, as well as the Proton eMAS and smart electric vehicles.

The number reflects an increase of 13.2% compared to January’s record. Proton said it estimates a market share of 17.2% from a forecast total industry volume (TIV) of 65,276 units.

The national automaker also revealed that three of its models lead their respective segments for Year-To-Date (YTD) sales. The S70 remains the best-selling C-segment sedan in Malaysia with 2,340 units sold in the first two months of the year.

The X90 continues to dominate D-segment SUV sales, with 746 units sold last month, while the X50 cements its position atop the class with a sales of 1,824 units.

As for the eMAS 7, Proton noted that the popularity of the EV is surging, with over 4,500 bookings received since its launch. February saw 580 units of the eMAS 7 delivered to customers, bringing the total number of deliveries to over 1,000 units.

Aside from domestic sales, the MAS 7 is also in line to make waves in export markets. 50 units were shipped to Nepal in February ahead of its future launch while a small number of units have also been sent to Singapore and Trinidad & Tobago for evaluation purposes.

Along with increases in sales, February also brought new developments to Proton’s export operations with the roll out of the CKD version of the LHD Proton Saga at the Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF) in Egypt. The new facility was built with an investment of USD50 million, with an annual production capacity of 40,000
vehicles.

“Sales for Proton recovered in February after a slow start to 2025. There is some lingering uncertainty regarding buyer liquidity but for now, our volumes are on an upward trend. Therefore, as a whole, Proton is continuing to chase sales volumes for our range of ICE products while setting the pace in the EV market.

“The Proton e.MAS 7 has proven to be an early success so our challenge now is to keep it in the spotlight while aggressively planning for our other model introductions later this year,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.

X-Wedge set to debut in Malaysia: A new motorcycle brand inspired by American lifestyle

When it comes to high-displacement cruisers and iconic American lifestyle brands, Harley-Davidson is the name that comes to mind.

However, did you know that there is a new brand poised to compete with Harley-Davidson in the Malaysian market? Introducing X-Wedge.

For your information, X-Wedge is a motorcycle brand that originated in China under the auspices of Hisun Motors.

Hisun Motors initially started as a company responsible for producing powersports products, including utility task vehicles (UTVs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

But with X-Wedge, the focus has shifted toward creating larger displacement cruiser models reminiscent of Harley-Davidson.

Interestingly, KISKA Design is responsible for the design and styling of the X-Wedge models— the same company that developed designs for GasGas, Husqvarna, and KTM motorcycles.

At the X-Wedge showroom located in Chongqing, we had the opportunity to closely examine a range of models with engine displacements ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 cc, including:

  • Ranger RX2000
  • Rover RL2000
  • Voyager VS2000
  • Walker WR1000
  • Vanguard VT2000

The majority of X-Wedge models share a common V-Twin engine with a displacement of 1,976 cc, capable of producing 102 hp at 5,000 rpm and 158 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm.

Meanwhile, the Walker WR1000 features a liquid-cooled V-Twin engine with a displacement of 975 cc, generating 80 hp at 7,500 rpm and 80 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm.

In addition to its range of large-displacement motorcycles, X-Wedge also produces various lifestyle products, including helmets, leather jackets, riding boots, as well as accessories and customization services for motorcycle appearances.

This premium brand is expected to make its entry into the Malaysian market around July or August, through MForce Bike Holdings.

We have been informed that MForce is working to establish four X-Wedge exhibition centers located in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, and Sabah.

KAMAX Cub X set to enter Malaysia, expected in August or September, priced below RM10,000

The official distributor of the Kamax brand, KTNS Holdings Sdn Bhd, is expected to introduce another model of motorcycle to the Malaysian market, namely the KAMAX Cub X 150.

This announcement was made during a recent media tour of the KAMAX exhibition center located in Jiulongpo, Chongqing.

Unlike the previously launched Super Pro motorcycle, the Cub X features a 150 cc engine that produces 9.1 hp at 7,500 rpm and 10.5 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm.

As a cubcross machine, the Cub X comes with more aggressive specifications, including tubeless off-road tires, 17-inch spoked rims, a single seat covered in leather, and a cargo rack in place of a passenger seat.

The suspension system of the Cub X consists of 26 mm telescopic forks in the front, followed by dual shock absorbers at the rear, each offering a wheel travel of 88.9 mm and 91.4 mm, respectively.

Additional features include:

  • LED lighting system
  • LCD cluster display
  • 3.8-liter fuel tank
  • Chrome side mirrors
  • Engine protector
  • Two-channel ABS system
  • Saddle height of 790 mm
  • Smart key system

According to KTNS, this model is expected to enter the Malaysian market around August or September, with a price tag below RM10,000.

This positions the KAMAX Cub X to compete with models in its class, such as the Yamaha PG-1 and Aveta Ranger Max 130.
