McLaren is now fully-owned by Bahrain

THIS is official, McLaren Group has announced that it has a new owner. The Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, the government investment arm of the country, now has full control over the sports car manufacturer.

Previously, Mumtalakat held a 60% stake, which has now been increased to 100%.

Paul Walsh, Chairman of McLaren Group, stated that this change “will help us to be more focused on achieving our long-term business plans.” This includes investments in new products and technologies.

McLaren Automotive is also likely to have the necessary financial support for the development of new models, including electric vehicles.

A year earlier, McLaren also sold its headquarters and Formula One factory. The company appointed a new CEO in 2022 and launched the 750S in 2023.

There are rumors indicating that McLaren will unveil their hypercar towards the end of this year. Reportedly, it has been “refined” and is said to feature a V8 plug-in hybrid engine with over 1,000hp.

It is reported that the hypercar will not feature McLaren’s signature dihedral doors but instead will have gullwing doors, in addition to a new carbon fiber chassis and 3D-printed suspension components.

SDAC-Ford sets new sales record in 2023 with 8,858 units Ranger, Everest sold

SIME Darby Auto Connexion-Ford (SDAC-Ford) has announced its sales performance for the year 2023, which saw the company achieve a record-breaking sales with 8,858 units of the Ford Ranger and Everest sold.

According to SDAC-Ford, the achievement reflects Malaysian consumers’ growing trust and preference for Ford vehicles’ exceptional performance, advanced technology, and superior quality.

A key contributing factor to the company’s success is the steady expansion of its dealership network to raise the bar in the Ford service experience.

Last year, it broke ground on the latest RM12 million Ford Signature dealership in Penang strategically located on Jalan Baru in Seberang Prai.

The state-of-the-art facility spans 46,000 square feet, showcasing a cutting-edge Ford 3S centre that follows the latest Ford Signature Corporate Identity and features 16 service bays and four vehicle display areas. The center will be fully operational by the end of Quarter 2 2024.

SDAC-Ford has also significantly expanded its presence across East Malaysia. Recognising Sabah as the third largest pickup market in the country, the company launched two key dealerships in the state – Ford Kota Kinabalu (Inanam) by Boston Auto Dealership and Ford Kota Kinabalu (Penampang) by Rightpower Corporation.

In Sarawak, the company opened Ford Kota Samarahan, Jimisar Aruna dealership in October 2023, located in the UniVista Commercial Centre, Jalan UniVista Off Jalan Express Way in Kuching.

These openings have solidified the brand’s footprint in East Malaysia, bringing a total of nine Ford dealerships across the area and 38 dealerships nationwide.

Proton sold 13,602 cars in February, S70 sales up by 60.5%

PROTON continued its positive growth trajectory to start the year by reporting 13,602 sales (domestic and export) in February. By doing so, total sales for the first two months grew to 26,484 units, an increase of 3% over the same time period from 2023.

The achievement is particularly noteworthy as automotive sales are traditionally slower at the beginning of the year after the year-end sales push in December.

After the first two months of 2024, total-industry-volume is estimated to have grown by 13.8% year-to-date to 129,353 units as an influx of new brands launching both traditional and EV models generates a lot of buyer interest.

The national carmaker’s market share is forecast to be at 20.5%, placing it comfortably in second position in the overall national automotive sales ranking.

Launched at the end of November 2023, the S70 has unlocked pent up demand and interest from buyers in both domestic and international markets. Sales increased by 60.5% to 2,314 units in February, as production continues to ramp up.

About to enter its 39th year of continuous production, the Saga recorded sales of 6,212 units in February, making it the fifth consecutive month the car has exceeded the 6,000 unit a month barrier.

More impressively, with a total of 12,341 units sold in the first two months of 2024, year-to-date sales for the model are now 10.9% higher than the previous year.

Apart from the S70, other models also ended February as sales leaders for their respective segments. The Persona and the X90 both continued to reign in their categories respectively with 1,859 and 374 units sold, respectively.

The X50 meanwhile ended February in second place for B-segment SUVs with 1,816 units, while the X70 saw an uptick of 19.6% to 445 units. The Iriz added 3.8% to close at 543 units.

Finally, although production has ended for the Exora, 39 units were sold in February and to date, over 194,250 units of the model have been sold, making it the most successful C-segment MPV in Malaysia’s automotive history.

Notably, its export business leapfrogged by 223% to 346 units in February as compared to January this year while year-to-date export growth stands at 50.5% with 453 units sold to overseas markets this far.

Porsche Leipzig plant awarded Factory of the Year

The Porsche production plant in Leipzig has been awarded the Factory of the Year by the consultancy firm Kearney, in collaboration with Süddeutscher Verlag Veranstaltungen and the magazine Produktion.

The sports car brand manufacturing facility has surpassed nearly 100 other factories worldwide. Last autumn, the jury panels visited this Leipzig plant.

Porsche utilizes the Smart Factory approach for a smart and connected plant. All processes are smart, efficient, and eco-friendly. For instance, the car ‘marriage’ process in the plant is intricate yet organized. The ‘marriage’ process involves the assembly of the chassis with the body of the car.

In Leipzig, this process can encompass three different powertrains – combustion engine, hybrid, or electric – in the same assembly line. Cameras are used for monitoring alongside automated measurement systems for checking screw threads.

In the painting section, whereas it was previously inspected by several individuals in a team, it now employs the Automatic Error Detection (AFE) process.

In just 70 seconds, two robots scan the entire outer surface of the car using light strips. Over 100,000 photos enable these robots to detect even minor errors.

Another aspect contributing to the Leipzig Porsche plant’s victory is sustainability and commitment to the local community. The Zero Impact Factory vision balances the economy, biodiversity, and air quality.

Since 2017, this plant has solely used electricity from renewable sources. It has been carbon-neutral since 2021, with part of the electric power being generated by the plant itself.

Porsche’s social commitment also contributes to education, culture, social issues, sports, and the environment. One strategy involves protecting various animal species in the plant’s vicinity for over 20 years. Species in the surrounding area include Heck cattle, Exmoor ponies, bees, and a variety of plants.

In 2002, the Leipzig plant commenced operations as Porsche’s second production center after Stuttgart. Currently, the Leipzig plant plays a pivotal role in the economy of central Germany, with over 4,600 employees building Macan and Panamera models here.

The Porsche Leipzig plant also houses the Porsche Experience Centre with an FIA-certified track and off-road courses.

Mercedes Vision EQXX completed 1,000km journey with 300km range left!

MERCEDES has once again sent their electric vehicle (EV) concept car – Vision EQXX – on a long-distance journey to test its efficiency. This time, it was tested in the Arabian Peninsula to demonstrate that EVs can be driven long distances even in desert heat.

The Vision EQXX recently traveled a distance of 627.6 miles (1,010km) from the Mercedes-Benz Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to the Mercedes-Benz Brand Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The journey took 14 hours and 42 minutes.

Despite temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius, the EV remained efficient with a power usage of only 7.4kWh per 100km. For comparison, it recorded 8.3kWh/100km during a test from Germany to England.

The Vision EQXX also had a remaining range of 192 miles (309km) when it reached its destination in Dubai. This theoretically means that the EV can be driven for up to 820 miles (1,319km) on a full charge.

This test result is a positive outcome for Mercedes engineers as extreme temperatures (too hot or too cold) can have a negative impact on the driving range of EVs. To mitigate the impact of temperature on the batteries, the Vision EQXX uses a special heat pump to cool the cabin, which Mercedes claims has minimal effect on the driving range.

To further enhance power efficiency, the Vision EQXX test unit is equipped with 117 solar cells. During the test, these cells generated 1.8kWh of energy, adding a range of 15 miles (24km). Mercedes stated that they will incorporate this feature into the production cars.

Also tested during this driving trial is the smart assistance system. This system provides recommendations to the driver on how to drive more efficiently, and it is indeed intelligent.

In this case, it also takes into account crosswinds from the coast to help the driver maximize the battery range. During stops, it assists in finding the most ideal parking space to receive sunlight for recharging the solar system.

This is the final ICE Nissan GT-R that Malaysians won’t be able to buy

NISSAN Malaysia, under the umbrella of Edaran Tan Chong Motor, has recently slowed down their operations. There have been no new model launches, and several promised SUV models are still yet to make an appearance in the Malaysian market.

Meanwhile, in the Japanese market, Nissan has recently introduced updates for the high-performance GT-R 2025. Speculations suggest that this model might mark the conclusion of the R35 series before production ceases.

The updated version closely resembles the exterior of the previous year’s facelift model. Additionally, the GT-R Premium Edition now offers the option of Blue Heaven upholstery, giving its cabin a classic appearance.

One of the notable changes brought by the update is the inclusion of exclusive engine components that were previously only available for the Nismo Special Edition. This includes the use of Nismo components such as piston rings, connecting rods, and a balanced crankshaft.

Consequently, the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine in the Nissan GT-R Premium Edition T-Spec and Track Edition now provides quicker engine revs and turbo spooling. The horsepower remains the same, standing at 565 hp for the standard model and 600 hp for the Nismo edition.

Despite these minor changes, the selling price of the Nissan GT-R 2025 has significantly increased, ranging from ¥14,443,000 (~RM457,361) for the standard version to ¥30,613,000 (~RM969,411) for the GT-R Nismo Special Edition.

Looking towards the future of the GT-R, there are recent indications. At the Japan Mobility Show late last year, Nissan unveiled the fully electric concept model, Hyper Force.

Although its appearance may seem overly aggressive for a supercar, the Nissan GT-R “R36” is reported to be capable of generating up to 1,341 hp with an all-wheel-drive e-4ORCE system and two driving modes: GT (Grand Touring) and R (Racing).

In all likelihood, the newly launched Nissan GT-R 2025 in Japan will only enter the Malaysian market through third-party channels, provided there is a demand.

Volvo Safety Driving Experience provides opportunity to face emergency situations, experiencing advanced safety systems

When asked what comes to mind with Volvo, undoubtedly safety springs to mind. The Swedish manufacturer is synonymous with safety and takes pride in it.

Recently, Volvo Car Malaysia organized their first Volvo Safety Driving Experience at the country’s first air base (former) in Bandar Malaysia, Sungai Besi.

The event, held on a Saturday a few weeks ago, saw over 240 Volvo owners and enthusiasts learning driving skills through exercises such as braking, steering, and quick lane changes.

For us in the media industry, such activities are not entirely unfamiliar, but it was the first time with Volvo, making it still something interesting to observe.

The first driving activity involved changing lanes to the left or right followed by maximum braking until the vehicle stopped. Using the Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, this activity was performed at speeds of 60 or 70 km/h.

Even at this speed, it was evident that it could feel aggressive for passengers despite the car remaining stable. Imagine having to perform this emergency maneuver while driving at 110 km/h on the highway…

Next, we were taken to the braking activity on a straight road while avoiding obstacles. Here, it could be seen that the ABS allowed the car to remain controllable even when braking hard.

Most importantly, the driver’s ability to react and focus during driving to reduce the risk of collisions in emergency situations is crucial.

Next, we were shown demonstrations of the safety systems present in the latest Volvo models.

Among them was the Cross Traffic Alert, which warns the driver of traffic behind when attempting to reverse out of a parking spot. The warning provided is accurate depending on the direction and distance of the traffic.

We also had the opportunity to try the Pilot Assist system with the Volvo V60, which helps the driver control speed in traffic along with steering assistance.

Crucially, Pilot Assist is also capable of braking automatically if the traffic ahead slows down, and it does so smoothly and naturally, like a real driver. This can undoubtedly reduce the burden and fatigue on the driver in everyday situations.

The last activity included a slalom course and high-speed acceleration. During the slalom, we could feel the agility of the Volvo S90, V60, XC60, and XC90 being driven through narrow routes adeptly, but in a safe manner.

Despite most of these models weighing around two tons, they were still stable and agile and had very convincing braking performance.

@engear.tv #Volvo haritu jemput kita untuk join Safety Driving Experience untuk tambah ilmu memandu. #safety #engeartv #malaysia #fyp #carsoftiktok ♬ original sound – Engear TV

Lastly, for the high-speed driving activity, we were given the opportunity to accelerate on the Sungai Besi Airfield runway, which is 1.8 km long, although we were not pilots wanting to take off.

Instead, we pushed these Volvo plug-in hybrid models to their maximum speed of 180 km/h and demonstrated the stability of these models when braking from high speeds. This maximum speed could also be achieved very quickly, in about 20 seconds.

Overall, the Volvo Safety Driving Experience provides participants the chance to experience and test the capabilities of Volvo models in safety-related situations.

Moreover, in the hangar, there was an exhibition of all Volvo models, sponsored by Pirelli, the main tire sponsor, and family activities such as Småland for children, as well as an exhibition by PURAS.

McLaren Artura Spider has 700 PS and a hardtop that opens in 11 seconds

THREE years ago, McLaren took the covers off the Artura, its first series-production High Performance Hybrid supercar. Now, the range has been further expanded with the introduction of the convertible version called the Artura Spider.

McLaren says the Spider has significant upgrades over the original model, including more power, more performance and greater driver engagement.

First and foremost, the 3.0-litre V6 hybrid engine has been reworked to bump up the total system output by 20 PS to 700 PS. Torque remains at a healthy 720 Nm but its delivery has been optimised thanks to minor changes to electronic mapping.

The engine is paired with an electric motor housed in the gearbox. The motor generates 95 PS and 225 Nm, and is coupled with a 7.4 kWh capacity battery that provides an electric range of up to 33 km.

With a recalibrated eight-speed transmission, the Artura Spider can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.4 seconds. Despite being a convertible, it can reach a maximum speed of 330 km/h.

The powertrain benefits from new mounts that are tuned to improve control within the chassis. This limits powertrain movement, especially when under load and in turn improves stability, steering feel and overall vehicle agility.

The Artura Spider uses a retractable one-piece hard-top that operates electrically in just 11 seconds, at speeds of up to 50km/h. It has a kerb weight of 1,560 kg, just 62 kg more than the Artura coupe.

To provide a full convertible experience, McLaren has fitted a revised valved exhaust system incorporating a tuned resonator and upward conical shape to the tailpipes to further refine the engine note at the middle and higher points of the rev range.

An optional sports exhaust system is available, should the buyers want an enhanced, clearer tone overall. This system uses an exhaust symposer that channels authentic sound waves from the tailpipe into the cabin.

Ride and handling is enhanced through revised response rates of the Proactive Damping Control suspension system. The rates have been increased by up to 90%, improving reaction to driver input and changes in road surface.

For braking, the Artura Spider utilises carbon ceramic discs measuring 390 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear. Each are coupled with six- and four-piston aluminum monobloc calipers, respectively.

Volkswagen Touareg returns to Malaysia – CKD, RM470k

VOLKSWAGEN Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has officially launched the Volkswagen Touareg R-Line, marking the re-entry of the flagship SUV into the local market after more than a decade.

We’re getting the facelifted third-generation model introduced globally in May of last year, in a sole R-Line variant.

The Touareg R-Line is locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang, and comes with a rather hefty price tag of RM469,990, including the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP).

The Touareg has a more aggressive look thanks to the R-Line package, redesigned front section, ‘R’ insignias on the doors and grille, and 20-inch Braga alloy wheels.

The design of the rear end is also sharper with its continuous horizontal LED strip for the taillight clusters. The rear VW logo is now illuminated in red, a first as this was previously only available in markets such as China and the US.

There are also new IQ.Light HD Matrix headlights, which have more than 38,000 interactive micro-LEDs to illuminate the road more precisely than ever before. In addition, entry and exit puddle lighting illuminates the ground by the doors with the Volkswagen logo.

Taking centrestage inside is the Innovision Cockpit, which consists of a 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit instrument display in front of the driver and a 15-inch touchscreen featuring the Discover Pro Max infotainment system and Wireless App-Connect.

Other creature comforts include wireless charging, five USB-C Type C ports with 45W capacity, four-zone air conditioning, Active Climate seats for the driver and front passenger, and the 730W Dynaudio Consequence audio system with an 80W amplifier and 13 speakers including a subwoofer.

The Touareg R-Line is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 TSI engine producing a respectable 340 PS and 450 Nm, delivered to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Air suspension with Automatic Self-Levelling is standard. Aside from providing comfort, it automatically adapts the vehicle height to match terrain conditions and can lower the ride height by 40 mm for easier loading or unloading of cargo. Wading level is an impressive 550 mm.

Safety-wise, the Touareg comes equipped with the IQ.Drive system offering features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist, Automatic Post-Collision Braking, Lane Assist, Lane Keeping, Park Assist, Front Cross Traffic Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Also included is Night Vision, which provides uses an infrared sensor in the camera to detect thermal signatures from humans or animals up to 130 metres ahead to keep the driver aware of potential collision.

The Touareg is available in five exterior colours, namely Lapiz Blue, Silicon Gray, Grenadilla Black, Oryx White and Dolomite Silver.

The aforementioned Volkswagen Assurance Package includes five years free maintenance, five years unlimited mileage warranty, and five years complimentary roadside assistance.

Volvo XC40, C40 Recharge renamed to EX40, EC40

VOLVO is standardising the names for two of its fully electric models, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, in line with its transformation towards becoming a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030.

Effective immediately, said models are renamed to EX40 and EC40 respectively, following in the footsteps of other Volvo fully electric models, which are the EX30, EX90 and EM90. The XC40 name remains for internal combustion-powered variants of the model.

The update also includes the removal of Recharge badging from Volvo’s plug-in hybrid models, which are now denoted simply by the T6 or T8 suffix indicating different levels of power output.

The new and streamlined model name standard makes it even easier for existing and new customers to understand which of the Volvo models are fully electric and which are hybrids.

The Swedish automaker is also introducing a new Performance software pack for the EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants, and as an upgrade for the previous model year in selected markets.

The Performance software pack, which increases power output by 25 kW (34 hp) for faster acceleration, also includes unique pedal mapping for quicker accelerator response and a ‘Performance’ drive mode to unlock the full 325 kW (436 hp).

In available markets, the Performance software will be offered as an optional upgrade pack via the Volvo Cars app when ordering a new car, while drivers of previous model year 2024 C40 and fully electric XC40 Recharge can purchase and download the software from the comfort of their sofa.

Additionally, B5 mild hybrid petrol variants of XC60 and XC90 now employ a more efficient engine combustion cycle, expected to result in CO2 emission reductions and fuel economy improvements of up to around 4% for the XC60 and around 2% for the XC90 based on the WLTP cycle.

There are also a special Black Edition of the EX40, EC40 and the XC40. The Black Edition models come with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black and the choice between microtech or textile charcoal interiors.
