Zeekr 009: Comparison with 4 popular premium MPV models in Malaysia

Zeekr Malaysia has recently announced the upcoming launch of a premium MPV model, the Zeekr 009.

It is set to offer stiff competition in the premium MPV segment, especially against the popular Alphard/Vellfire twin models that are well-known among the Malaysian populace.

For this article, we will share the differences in specifications between the Zeekr 009 model and premium MPVs such as Alphard/Vellfire, Lexus LM, and Kia Carnival.

Dimensions

The majority of the models mentioned have dimensions exceeding 5 meters.

Starting with the Alphard/Vellfire, it measures 5,010 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, 1,950 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.

Another twin, the Lexus LM, has longer dimensions (5,125 mm) and is wider (1,890 mm) but maintains the same wheelbase length.

The Kia Carnival, on the other hand, presents much larger dimensions, measuring 5,155 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, a wheelbase of 3,090 mm, but lower in height (1,740 mm).

The largest? Certainly the Zeekr 009.

With dimensions measuring 5,209 mm in length, it is also wider (2,024 mm) with a longer wheelbase (3,205 mm). Its height is around 1,848 mm, meaning it is slightly lower compared to the Alphard/Vellfire.

Engine

This is an interesting comparison, as all five premium MPV models are equipped with different powertrains.

The least powerful is undoubtedly the Toyota Vellfire with a 2.5-liter NA engine generating 180 hp and 235 Nm of torque.

The Toyota Alphard, on the other hand, comes with a 2.4-liter turbo engine producing 274 hp and 430 Nm of torque, while the Lexus LM is equipped with a similar capacity engine but with a hybrid setup, delivering a total power of 371 hp and 550 Nm of torque.

The Kia Carnival features a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine that has been offered for quite some time, producing 199 hp and 440 Nm of torque.

Due to the powerful electric motors, this MPV is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. It is very suitable for transporting VIPs who have difficulty keeping to a schedule in Malaysia.

Price

One aspect considered by buyers in Malaysia is the selling price.

The most affordable in this list is undoubtedly the Kia Carnival, with the base variant available for as low as RM198,500. The most expensive version of the Carnival bears a price tag of RM259,888.

Shifting to the Toyota/Lexus trio, the cheapest among the three models is the Toyota Vellfire, with a starting selling price of around RM438,000.

The Toyota Alphard is slightly more expensive, priced at RM538,000, while the much more premium Lexus LM can be obtained for RM1,228,000 to RM1,468,000!

The Zeekr 009 seems to be more comfortably positioned in the middle, with an estimated selling price below RM370,000, with the actual selling price to be known only after its official launch.

Will Zeekr 009 be a good buy?

How does the Zeekr X stack up against the smart #1, smart #3 and Volvo EX30?

In addition to the luxurious MPV 009, Zeekr Malaysia is also set to launch an electric crossover known as the X to heat up the competition in the local EV market.

For your information, the X actually has ‘siblings’ that have already been launched in Malaysia, specifically the smart #1 and #3, along with the Volvo EX30.

What is the connection between the X and these three models? Interestingly, despite their very different designs, all of them share the same ‘skeleton’ that is the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform developed by Geely.

This is not surprising, as smart, Volvo, and Zeekr all operate under the Geely umbrella and platform sharing is arguably the easiest way to reduce costs.

In this article, we will compare the four models to help you choose the one that best fits your budget and needs:

Dimensions

Although they utilise the same platform, all four EVs have slightly different dimensions. The smart #1 is the smallest, measuring 4,270 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, and 1,636 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

The #3 is slightly larger, with a length of 4,400 mm, width of 1,844 mm, height of 1,556 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.

The EX30, Volvo’s smallest car to date, measures 4,223 mm in length, 1,837 mm in width, 1,555 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,650 mm.

Meanwhile, the X stands out as the longest model, measuring 4,450 mm in length, 1,836 mm in width, and 1,572 mm in height. However, its wheelbase is identical to that of the #1, also at 2,750 mm.

Powertrain

For this category, we will compare the twin electric motor variants. Interestingly, all four have the same power output of 422 hp (315 kW) and 543 Nm of torque.

However, looking at the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h, the EX30 Ultra Twin Performance is the fastest at 3.6 seconds. The #3 Brabus follows closely at 3.7 seconds, with the X at 3.8 seconds, and finally, the #1 at 3.9 seconds.

The maximum speed for all four models is capped at 180 km/h.

Battery and Range

In terms of battery, the #1 Pro and #3 Pro come equipped with LFP 49 kWh batteries, offering ranges between 315 km and 325 km. The Premium variants of both models use nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) 66 kWh batteries, with ranges from 440 km to 455 km.

The highest variant, Brabus, uses the same battery but with a shorter range of 400 km for the #1 and 415 km for the #3.

The EX30 features a 69 kWh NMC battery, providing a range of 476 km for the single motor variants (Plus and Ultra) and 450 km for the Ultra Twin Performance variant with twin motors.

Meanwhile, the X is equipped with a 66 kWh NMC battery, promising a range of 440 km based on the WLTP cycle.

Price

This may be the most crucial aspect when comparing these four electric crossovers.

Starting with the #1, the Pro variant is priced at RM169,000, the Premium at RM209,000, and the Brabus at RM249,000.

The #3 Pro retails for RM175,000, the Premium for RM215,000, and the Brabus at RM255,000.

For the EX30, the base variant (Plus) is priced at RM188,888, the Ultra at RM208,888, and the Ultra Twin Performance at RM228,888.

As of the time of writing, the official price for the Zeekr X has yet to be announced. However, according to the company, it is expected to be priced below RM180,000.

CAM EC35 ambulance shown at IGEM – 268 km range, priced at RM199k

The International Greentech and Eco Product Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM), held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, showcased a variety of electric vehicles for commercial use.

Among them is the CAM EC35 electric van, which is available in three versions: panel van, semi-panel van, and window van. The displayed unit is a window van that has been modified into an ambulance.

All three versions share the same dimensions, measuring 4,500 mm in length, 1,680 mm in width, and 1,985 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,050 mm. The gross weight is 2,600 kg, while the payload capacity ranges from 1,025 to 1,090 kg.

The panel van accommodates two seats, the semi-panel van has five seats, while the window van features a configuration for six or eight seats.

The EC35 is powered by a single electric motor located on the rear axle, generating 80 hp (60 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. Energy is supplied by a 38.7 kWh battery, which allows for a range of 268 km based on the WLTP cycle.

Standard AC charging takes approximately five hours to recharge the battery from 20% to 80%, while DC fast charging requires 80 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% or 2.5 hours for a full charge.

Additional features of the EC35 include power windows, ABS, EBD, reverse sensors, and a reverse camera with the feed displayed on an eight-inch screen.

Needless to say, several modifications must be made to convert it into an ambulance.

These include installing a LED light bar, siren, loudspeakers, PA system, and eight units of LED warning lights (two on the front grille, four on the side of the roof, and two on the rear of the roof). All rear windows are tinted with a VLT of 95%.

Inside, the vehicle features an 18 mm thick waterproof plywood floor, aluminum cabinets, and an oxygen pipeline along with related components. It is also equipped with a fire extinguisher, AC inverter, three-pin socket, USB ports, LED ceiling lights, and two stretchers.

Steering issue: Honda USA recalls 1.7 million vehicles

In the United States, Honda and Acura are conducting a recall campaign involving a total of 1,693,199 vehicle units, according to Automotive News.

Based on information from the NHTSA agency, there is a problem with the installation process of steering components, resulting in excessive internal friction. This condition can cause some owners to have difficulty in controlling their vehicles.

Honda suspects that the steering rack issue only involves one percent of the vehicles, or around 17,000 units out of the total number recalled.

The steering problem was first detected in September 2021, and since then, Honda has received a total of 10,328 warranty claims.

The NHTSA agency has also received 13 reports of accidents related to the steering issue, including 11 cases filed by drivers who were unable to control their vehicles properly. Fortunately, no injury incidents have been reported.

Affected models include the Acura Integra (model years 2023-2025), Honda Civic (2023-2025, including hybrid models), Honda Civic Type R (2023-2025), Honda CR-V (2023-2025, including the 2025 CR-V FCEV), and Honda HR-V (2023-2025).

Honda USA plans to replace the worm gear spring component with a new one, and add grease to reduce friction on each recalled vehicle at no additional cost.

Isuzu D-Max breaks record with 2,000 km drive on a single tank

Isuzu D-Max demonstrates its fuel-sipping capabilities once again by completing a record-breaking 2,000 km journey on a single 76-litre fuel tank.

This is not the first time the D-Max has flaunted its prowess. Back in 2015, the D-Max completed a journey from Bangkok to Singapore, covering a distance of 1,809 km on just one tank of diesel.

Then in March 2020, Isuzu Malaysia successfully drove a 1.9-litre Single Cab model loaded with a tonne of weight, clocking a distance of over 1,000 kilometres using just its single tank of fuel.

For the latest achievement, the company fielded three units of the D-Max, which comprised the 1.9L 4X2 Auto Plus, 1.9L 4X4 Auto Premium, and the 3.0L 4X4 X-Terrain variants.

The pickup trucks were driven from the central Thai town of Phitsanulok, located approximately 300 km north of Bangkok to Klang, Selangor.

This was the first time the company put the new third-generation D-Max to the test. Besides featuring a highly aerodynamic exterior design, the 2024 models feature updated Euro 4 engines, offering superior power delivery and fuel efficiency.

The epic feat was witnessed by a technical steward from the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) who sealed the fuel tanks and observed that the vehicles were driven throughout the journey without any introduction of additional fuel.

It also earned the Isuzu D-Max a place in the Malaysian Book of Records for the ‘Longest Distance Driven In A Pick-up Truck With A Single Tank Of Fuel’.

Speaking at the arrival of the vehicles at the new Ultra Gallant Isuzu 3S Centre in Klang, Selangor after completing its 2,000km journey, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia Shunsuke Okazoe said that the achievement underlined Isuzu’s amazing engineering capabilities in developing Blue Power diesel engines that perform way beyond the call of duty.

“While we do not expect every customer to drive their Isuzu vehicles 2,000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel, it clearly demonstrates the level of engineering that goes into every Isuzu vehicle to even make a feat of this magnitude a possibility,” said Okazoe.

“With the rising costs of various daily items including the price of diesel, those who use the Isuzu D-Max in their daily operations will truly benefit from its cost-saving character,” added Light Commercial Vehicle Division COO, Kenkichi Sogo.

Ducati Multistrada V4 RS enters Malaysian market – RM286k

Ducati Malaysia has officially launched the Ducati Multistrada V4 RS, a motorcycle that combines superbike
performance with long-distance touring comfort.

The combination makes the Multistrada V4 RS equally suitable for both high-speed riding as well as cross-country exploration.

What’s interesting is that the Multistrada V4 RS is the only Multistrada to be powered by the Desmosedici Stradale, the MotoGP-derived engine used on the Panigale and the Streetfighter.

The 1,103 cc four-cylinder engine generates a healthy 180 hp, which is 10 hp more than the Multistrada V4, with a torque of 118 Nm.

Just like the Panigale V4 SP2 , the Multistrada V4 RS also features the STM EVO-SBK dry clutch in billet aluminium for that unmistakable Ducati performance and sound, complemented by an Akrapovič silencer.

In terms of appearance, the Multistrada V4 RS can be distinguished from other versions by its special livery, which includes Iceberg White, red inserts, and MotoGP-inspired graphic elements.

This is further accentuated by specialised carbon fiber components such as the front fender, hand guards, heat shield and front ‘beak’, which are exclusive items to the Multistrada V4 RS.

There’s also a unique serial number shown on the steering head on a black anodised aluminium plate.

Moreover, the motorcycle comes with a technopolymer tail and a titanium subframe, which not only add a fierce look but also reduce weight by 2.5 kg.

Further weight-saving measure includes the use of 17-inch forged aluminum Marchesini wheels, which are 2.7 kg lighter compared to standard cast rims.

The Multistrada V4 RS is equipped with Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 electronic suspension, while the braking system features dual 330 mm discs and Brembo Stylema four-piston monobloc calipers at the front, and a single 265 mm disc with a two-piston Brembo caliper at the rear.

Other features of the motorcycle include Ducati Quickshift, Cornering ABS, Full Power Mode, and a 6.5-inch TFT display.

The seat height is adjustable from 840 mm to 860 mm, or from 810 mm to 830 mm with a low seat accessory.

The Multistrada V4 RS is now available at all Ducati showrooms across Malaysia, with a starting price of RM285,900.

Proton to run two S70 R3 race cars in this year’s Sepang 1000km

Proton has officially introduced the Proton S70 R3 race car, which will compete in the gruelling Sepang 1000km endurance race scheduled from November 22 to 24.

Official images released by the national car manufacturer show the S70 R3 undergoing final preparations, awaiting only the application of its racing livery.

Specifications have not been disclosed; however, based on the distinct roar heard in a video shared on October 1, there is a possibility that the car uses the 1.6-litre Campro engine, similar to those used in previous Proton racing cars.

Established in 2003, Proton R3 is the factory supported motorsports division of Proton with the acronym standing for Race, Rally, Research.

Over the last two decades, R3 have successfully campaigned Proton models both domestically and internationally in racing and rallying events, while using the knowledge gained to develop a range of performance enhancing components and limited edition models for sale to customers.

More recently, they have also ventured into the lubricants space, selling performance lubricants carrying the R3 banner.

The S70 R3 is the latest in a long line of Proton models developed for motorsports. With its debut, both Proton and its motorsports division are venturing into uncharted waters, campaigning a car co-developed with Geely and just one year after its market launch.

Proton is the most successful OEM in the 15-year history of Sepang 1000km with six wins, while R3 are the most successful team with five wins, including three in a row from 2017 to 2019.

“Having not competed in the last three Sepang 1000km races, Proton is excited to be back on the starting grid in 2024. The Proton S70 R3 marks a new milestone for the brand as we take a model developed together with Geely into the heat of competition for the very first time,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton.

“Despite being a new car, Proton is taking the challenge to field two units of the S70 R3 in the race instead of using a proven older model as a backup. We are determined to prove the abilities of the newest Proton sedan model in the racetrack and while we expect competition from teams who have actively competed the last three years, it is our belief the lessons learnt in racing will translate to us building better cars for our customers in the future,” he added.

The signing will be the first step for Denza entering into Malaysia. The luxury electric vehicle sub-brand is set to bring a new dimension to Malaysia’s EV market with premium cutting-edge technology, features and driving experience.

Proton retains second place despite sales dip in September

Proton announced it has recorded sales of 11,269 units (domestic + export) in September to bring its year to date (YTD) total sales volume to 112,758 units.

As a result, the national automaker remains in second position in the national automotive sales rankings with a forecast market share of 20.1% for the month and a YTD figure of 19.1% for the whole of 2024.

Total sales for the automotive industry were down in September, historically a slow month, as total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have dropped to its lowest point in 17 months.

Early estimates show the number to be at just 56,067 units, which is a reduction of 22.2% from the previous month. The estimated YTD total for TIV however remains ahead of 2023 with a total volume of just under 590,000 units being 3% better than last year.

Launched on 19 August this year, the 2025 Proton X70 enabled the company to return back to the head of the C-segment SUV market with 1,466 units sold in September. This is the highest sales volume for the model since December 2022.

The other two Proton SUV models also ended the month as sales leaders. After being updated in June, the Proton X50 continued its strong sales performance with another 1,771 units sold. The Proton X90, meanwhile, retook leadership for D-segment sales with 217 units sold to bring its YTD total to a market leading 2,724 units.

Another model leading its segment for YTD sales is the Proton S70, which remains the cumulative sales leader for the segment and added 1,013 units to bring its total to 14,768 units in its first full year of sales.

Though temporarily displaced from the top of the monthly sales leaderboard it will receive a boost with the unveiling of the Proton S70 R3 that is set to compete in the Sepang 1000km endurance race in November.

The Proton Saga continues to be the company’s bestseller, achieving 5,162 sales last month, placing it in second place for A-segment sedans. Its sedan sister, the Proton Persona, clocked up 1,295 sales while the Proton Iriz had a steady sales month with 345 units sold.

Aveta VTM 250 launched in enduro & supermoto guises, from RM13k

Aveta Global Marketing Sdn Bhd, the manufacturer, assembler and distributor of Aveta motorcycles, has expanded its adventure bike range with the official launch of the new VTM 250.

The dual-purpose motorcycle is available in two variants, each catering to different target groups.

The LX variant, available by the end of October, is designed for enduro enthusiasts ready to explore various trails and terrains.

By December, the M variant will hit the market, offers an affordable entry into the world of supermoto suitable for everyday use.

Both variants share a 250cc oil-cooled 4-stroke single-cylinder SOHC engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine makes 18.8 hp at 8,500 rpm and 16 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm.

The key difference lies in their ground clearance and wheel sizes. The LX boasts a higher ground clearance of 305 mm, with a 21-inch front rim and 18-inch rear rim, while the M variant offers 290 mm clearance with 17-inch front and rear aluminium rims.

The company says the aluminium rims on the M variant not only enhance durability but also reduce overall weight, improving agility and handling for street riding.

Additionally, the colour schemes differ, with the LX available in Arsenal Red or Army Green, and the M in Blazing Red or Admiral Blue.

The VTM 250 LX is priced at RM12,988 (excluding insurance and road tax) while the M variant will retail at RM13,388. Both variants come with a one-year or 10,000km warranty, whichever comes first.

To sweeten the deal, Aveta is offering an exclusive Gift with Purchase (GWP) set for the first 50 customers of each VTM 250 variant (LX and M).
