RTD issued 5,306 offence notices during ‘Ops Khas Gempur Teknikal’

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 5,306 offence notices after inspecting 17,729 commercial and public service vehicles during a five-day Special Technical Raid Operation that concluded today, according to Bernama.

Transport Ministry (MoT) secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan said the notices involved vehicle detentions, inspection orders and for questioning.

“Additionally, out of this total, action was taken against 1,787 vehicles, with 16 seized, 15 of which were commercial and a public service vehicle.

“JPJ is not out to find faults by issuing notices; we only aim to ensure road safety and optimal road conditions. Notices are not issued arbitrarily,” he told reporters during the Special Technical Raid Operation at the Seremban Southbound Rest and Service Area (RnR) today.

He said a recurring issue with commercial vehicles, such as lorries and trailers, is using unsuitable or retreaded tyres on the road.

He said this issue is a key operation focus, ensuring brakes and tyres are in proper condition. Vehicles will be stopped from continuing their journey if violations are found.

“During checks earlier, we observed several vehicles using retreaded tyres with the outer layer nearly peeling off. Suppose these come off while on the road, it could pose significant danger to road users. This is precisely the situation we aim to prevent,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jana Santhiran said that JPJ has deployed over 1,500 personnel nationwide to strengthen enforcement of trade-related offences, including overloading, technical issues, documentation and traffic violations, particularly during festive seasons.

“We have increased the number of personnel. Previously, it was fewer than 1,000 officers, but now we have deployed them to highways, urban roads, and other areas, especially during festive periods,” he said.

He also advised all heavy vehicle drivers to place cones or road barriers when their vehicles stop in emergency lanes due to breakdowns to signal other road users.

“Recently, there have been several accidents caused by lorry drivers failing to use cones or place them behind their vehicles to indicate an emergency stop. I hope everyone pays full attention to road safety regulations,” he said.

Mandatory periodic inspections for heavy vehicles by Puspakom, stricter actions required – NIOSH

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has called for the mandatory use of advanced monitoring technologies, such as the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and telematics, in all heavy vehicles to detect mechanical issues promptly.

Its vice-chairman Manivanan Gowin said that these technologies could provide an early warning of potential damage that might endanger lives.

“It’s time for us to utilise technological advancements to improve road safety,” he said in a statement today in response to the tragic crash at KM 204 northbound of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) in Melaka that resulted in seven fatalities, including five family members.

Manivanan said that the incident had uncovered a major weakness in the safety system of heavy vehicles on the road, calling for immediate action and stricter enforcement, and urged all stakeholders to take significant measures to prevent future tragedies.

He said that for this purpose, government agencies, transport operators, local authorities, and non-governmental organisations needed to work together in developing a long-term strategic plan for road safety.

Manivanan said that NIOSH was willing to offer its highly skilled experts to assist the relevant authorities and agencies in identifying safety issues and finding more effective and long-term solutions.

“This team is ready to carry out technical analysis and investigation of the cause of the accident, as well as propose accurate and appropriate improvement measures.

“NIOSH also offers prudent driving courses and ISO Traffic Management-related training aimed at increasing driver awareness as well as assisting organisations in complying with relevant international safety standards.

“These programmes are a proactive effort to reduce accidents involving heavy vehicles,” he said.

NIOSH also suggested that transport operators implement a more comprehensive continuous safety training programme, especially for lorry and bus drivers, which should include in-depth knowledge of prudent driving, understanding of road laws, and the strict application of safety principles.

Manivanan said that accidents could be reduced through heightened awareness and discipline.

He also urged the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to ramp up enforcement and take stern action, including heavy fines, against heavy vehicles failing to comply with safety standards.

“This includes ensuring that all vehicles undergo regular inspections at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM). Regular and thorough monitoring is crucial to prevent unsafe vehicles from being on the road,” he said.

Firefly: an urban EV with iPhone-like lens lights

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has launched a new brand to compete with luxury compact electric vehicle brands such as Smart and Mini.

The new brand is named Firefly, which is set to be positioned between Nio’s own brand and Onvo in terms of size, features, and pricing.

The first model to hit the market in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia will be a hatchback designed with elements reminiscent of the now-discontinued Honda e.

Designed by former BMW and Ford designer Kris Tomasson, the Firefly hatchback features a unique design element: its LED headlights and taillights resemble the lens of an iPhone camera.

Other notable features include flush door handles, cute six-spoke wheels, and body cladding made from sustainable materials.

This urban EV offers a front cargo space of 92 liters with a water drainage function, and the rear cargo area can expand to 1,250 liters when the second-row seats are folded flat.

While the overall dimensions of the Firefly hatchback have not yet been disclosed, it is likely to be similar in size to models like the BYD Dolphin and Renault 5, with a turning radius of 9.4 meters.

Nio also claims that this EV has been designed to achieve a five-star rating in Euro NCAP and C-NCAP tests, featuring safety measures that include nine airbags as standard equipment.

The use of aluminum and high-strength steel, constituting 83.4 percent of the vehicle’s structural body, along with dual impact beams in the front doors, contributes to a top-tier torsional rigidity figure in its class (35,700 Nm).

Currently, the specifications for the Firefly’s battery and electric motor have not been revealed, but Nio has indicated that the Firefly will support battery swapping functionality.

In the Chinese market, the Firefly can be pre-ordered starting at 148,800 yuan (approximately RM91,085).

By the end of 2025, Nio aims to have the Firefly brand established in 25 countries.

Students from Nissan Automotive College create ‘Z Wagon’ using Stagea Wagon platform

The phrase “sports car” and “practicality” may seem difficult to place in the same sentence.

However, that is precisely what a group of students from Nissan Automotive College aims to achieve for the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025.

The project is named Z Lealia, a combination of the words “Lead” and “Familia,” where Z Lealia is designed as a sports wagon suitable for the entire family.

This sporty wagon does not actually originate from the rear-wheel-drive platform of the Nissan Z; instead, it is entirely based on the second-generation Nissan Stagea wagon platform.

From the front view, we can see the successful integration of the front fascia of the Nissan Z.

However, the work on the rear section of the wagon appears to be lacking, particularly in terms of the excessively wide fender dimensions and the gap existing between the taillights and the rear bumper.

The vehicle is finished in Ikazuchi Yellow, featuring 19-inch aftermarket rims, a steering wheel from the Nissan Z, and a custom two-tone upholstery.

Praise should be given to the college students for their boldness in creating something unique.

In addition to the Z Wagon, there are two other modified models: the Nissan Neo Skyline and the Bluebird Kiwami, produced by two different student groups.

The Nissan Neo Skyline is essentially a Skyline Coupe V35 with custom body panels inspired by the 1970s “Kenmeri” Skyline model.

The entire body is painted in Tomoaki Blue, complemented by 18-inch rims and a two-tone interior finish.

On the other hand, the Bluebird Kiwami (from Aichi College) is built based on the Nissan Bluebird Maxima that existed 36 years ago, featuring a wide, boxy body kit.

At the same time, the student group successfully maintained the original features of the vehicle, including the frameless door design and luxurious interior finishes.

All three customized cars will be officially showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025, taking place from January 10 to 12 in Japan.

No second drivers, JPJ issues summonses to 25 express, tour buses

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued summonses to 25 express and tour buses for not having a second driver for trips exceeding 300 kilometres (km) or four hours continuously during a special operation at three toll plazas in Penang.

JPJ said the operation started at 10 pm yesterday and ended at 7 am today, and was conducted at both sides of the Juru, Bukit Tambun and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah toll plazas.

“JPJ also compounded an express bus as the driver had no driving licences as well as a container lorry as the driver was underaged,” the department said in a Facebook post today.

The department also took action against 23 buses for not having driver’s logbooks or not maintaining them and one for not having a tour guide.

Overall, 273 summonses were issued.

This RM85k yellow 850i E31 is BMW fans’ worst nightmare

Purists, look away now, as we are about to show a BMW 8 Series (E31) that may well induce depression and rob you of sleep at night.

Indeed, this radioactive yellow contraption donning a rather unflattering body kit started life as a 1990 850i Coupe. And believe it or not, it could be yours for just £14,995 (RM84,715).

However, the Signature Motor Company’s website, where this car is advertised, fails to provide any crucial details regarding its ownership history or even mileage.

According to the company, this is a standard 850i featuring a 5.0-litre V12 engine capable of producing 296 hp. Produced from 1990 to 1994, the 850i was available with either a four-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission – this particular unit has the manual.

There’s no denying that a V12 engine paired with a manual transmission is a tantalising combination for car enthusiasts. However, in this case, the ghastly body kit is simply too hideous to ignore.

As you can see, the overly angular design of the front and rear bumpers, combined with the profusion of holes mar the E31’s timeless appeal. To make matters worse, the massive rear spoiler and chrome rims clash horrendously with the car’s overall shape.

Fortunately, the vehicle can still be identified by its iconic kidney grille and pop-up headlights at the front. However, from the rear, you would be hard-pressed to recognise it as an E31, as the original lights have been replaced with six round lamps sourced from a cheap accessory shop.

As might be expected, the interior has been ‘tainted’ with faux leather upholstery in black and yellow, along with aftermarket steering wheel and gear knob. The unfortunate soul who purchases this car will likely need to fork out a lot moolah to restore it to its former glory.

2025 Hyundai Palisade, for those who are allergic to minivans

Whether one realizes it or not, the Hyundai Palisade has now entered a new generation after making its debut in 2018.

Unlike its predecessor, the second generation of the Hyundai Palisade 2026 boasts a sturdier design without overly busy body lines.

In terms of dimensions, the Hyundai Palisade 2026 is now 5,060 mm long (+65 mm), 1,980 mm wide (+5 mm), 1,805 mm tall (+55 mm), and has a wheelbase of 2,970 mm (+70 mm).

From the side profile, the added dimensions result in a shorter front overhang and a longer rear overhang.

It resembles a Range Rover.

This luxurious appearance is further enhanced by a relatively large and wide grille, followed by a cluster of gigantic LED daytime running lights that also serve as turn signal indicators visible from a distance.

The layered lighting theme continues at the rear, though without the transverse LED bar that is currently in trend.

Inside the cabin, the Palisade features a layout that is far more luxurious, akin to a Genesis brand vehicle.

The dashboard houses a twin 12.3-inch screen in a single curved panel, adorned with wooden trim, ambient lighting, a steering wheel similar to the Range Rover model, and a cluster of controls for the infotainment and cabin temperature systems.

In Korea, the Hyundai Palisade is also available in a nine-seat version, where the ninth seat is a small bench between the front seats that can be converted into a center console.

For other markets, the Palisade remains available in seven- or eight-seat versions.

In the seven-passenger version, the second-row seats come with electric adjustability (including reclining and folding), massage functions, and a tilting walk-in feature for easy access to the third row.

Cargo space can also be maximized to 615 liters simply by moving the third-row seats slightly forward.

Drivers are also given the freedom to adjust the position and angle of the second and third-row seats through the infotainment screen menu.

It is worth noting that the Hyundai Palisade 2026 still retains the same unibody platform as its predecessor, although it has been upgraded.

Despite sharing the same platform, the new Hyundai Palisade does not retain the 3.8-liter V6 engine, instead replacing it with a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 277 hp and 422 Nm of torque.

The hybrid version, which consists of the 2.5-liter turbo engine, a single electric motor (72 hp/264 Nm), and a 1.65 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, can generate up to 330 hp, with a driving range exceeding 1,000 km!

In addition to the new engines, the Hyundai Palisade is the first Hyundai SUV to feature a technology known as Electronic Controlled Suspension (ECS).

This ECS system uses navigational data and sensors to adjust vehicle movements throughout the journey, prioritizing enhanced passenger comfort.

Furthermore, the new Palisade offers a quieter cabin using thicker glass and additional sound insulation around the windows.

The second-generation Hyundai Palisade 2026 is set to be sold in the Korean market starting at ₩43,830,000 (approximately RM135,724).

Toyota Alphard/Vellfire PHEV launched in Japan, 73 km EV range, starting from RM306k

7 of the greatest inventions in the automotive industry

Since the advent of the world’s first automobile, the Benz Patent Motorwagen in 1886, the automotive industry has spawned countless innovations, revolutionising the car into a mode of transport that is safer, more comfortable, and increasingly sophisticated.

Here are seven of the most significant inventions in the automotive sector:

Fuel injection

Believe it or not, the technology behind fuel injection has existed in its most basic form for over 120 years. Henry Ford employed a mechanical injection system in his racing car, the ‘Sweepstakes’, in 1901, and by the 1920s, this technology was more widely adopted in diesel engines. In 1955, Mercedes-Benz introduced direct gasoline injection with the iconic 300 SL, followed two years later by Chevrolet, which featured port fuel injection in the Bel Air and Corvette.

Turbocharger

The turbocharger, a jewel among car enthusiasts, was invented by Swiss engineer Alfred Büchi in 1905. He conceived the idea while studying steam turbines. Interestingly, this technology was used in aircraft during World War I before being extensively applied to automobiles. The first cars equipped with turbo engines were the Oldsmobile Jetfire Rocket and the Chevrolet Corvair Monza, both launched in 1962.

Cruise Control

This system was devised by the blind engineer Ralph Teetor in 1948, born out of his frustration with his driver who would speed up and slow down erratically. Essentially, cruise control allows the driver to maintain a set speed without using the accelerator. The Chrysler Imperial was the first car to feature this system, which was dubbed ‘Auto Pilot’ by the automaker.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) employs sensors to monitor wheel speed during braking. If it detects a wheel on the verge of locking, it applies and releases the brakes faster than a human could react. This technology is crucial in preventing skidding, thus enabling the driver to maintain control of the vehicle.

Catalytic converter

This device is fitted into a vehicle’s exhaust system to convert pollutants found in exhaust fumes, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, into carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water, which are far less harmful. This conversion occurs through chemical reactions involving catalysts like platinum, which, though resistant to corrosion, can be quite expensive, making catalytic converters a target for thieves.

Airbags

Airbags were patented for automotive use in the early 1950s as a passive safety feature that deploys during an accident. However, their adoption was slow until the 1970s when General Motors introduced them in the Chevy Impala produced for government fleets. Today, airbags deploy not only from the steering wheel and dashboard but also from doors, pillars, and roofs.

Seat belts

No discourse on vehicle safety features would be complete without the mention of seat belts. The earliest forms of seat belts appeared in the mid-19th century, but the modern three-point seat belt, now standard in all vehicles, was developed and perfected by Nils Bohlin for Volvo, which introduced it in 1958. Recognising the importance of this innovation, Volvo granted permission for other manufacturers to use the design free of charge.

First MAN eTruck begins service with automotive logistics specialist Duvenbeck

MAN Truck & Bus is setting another milestone in the electrification of freight transport with the handover of the first MAN eTruck to the Duvenbeck Group,

The Ultra Low Liner eTGX semitrailer tractor, specially developed for the loading volume requirements of automotive logistics, is set to make Volkswagen plant logistics particularly climate-friendly in the future.

In accordance with the letter of intent (LOI) signed by both parties, Duvenbeck intends to put up to 120 units of the MAN eTGX into service by 2026.

Duvenbeck will deploy the MAN eTruck in various areas of the Rhine-Ruhr and BeNeLux freight forwarding region as part of VW’s plant logistics.

“With the Ultra Low Liner eTruck, MAN has developed a solution that is perfectly tailored to the requirements of the automotive industry. No other series produced electric semitrailer tractor can pull trailers with an interior height of three meters. This makes it the ideal choice for transports with high volume requirements,” explains Friedrich Baumann, Chief Sales & Customer Solutions Officer at MAN Truck & Bus.

“We are delighted to have two strong partners at our side, Duvenbeck and Volkswagen, to bring this innovation to the road.”

The Ultra Low Liner eTruck MAN eTGX features a semitrailer height of just 950 mm, a very short wheelbase of 3.75 meters and a battery that offers a range of around 500 km.

This makes it perfect for use in automotive logistics, where maximum load volume up to three meters in interior height is more important than high load weights.

Thanks to its modular battery concept with a choice of four, five or six battery packs and power levels of 449 and 544 hp, it can be optimally adapted to any transport task.

In addition to the standard CCS charging technology (up to 375 kW), it can also be ordered with the new MCS standard with up to one megawatt charging power, which enables even faster intermediate charging during the driver’s break from driving.

Kia Syros is EV9’s ICE-powered little brother made for Indian market

Kia has introduced its latest compact crossover, the Syros, which will compete in the Indian market. Although it may resemble the EV9, the automaker’s latest offering is powered by an internal combustion engine paired with a manual transmission.

It is also significantly smaller compared to the colossal electric SUV, measuring 3,995 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,665 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,550 mm. The Syros is built on the K1 platform, which is also used by the Hyundai Casper.

Despite the size difference, the Syros incorporates several design elements found in the EV9, such as ice cube-shaped LED headlights, Starmap LED taillights, and Kia’s Digital Tiger Face.

Its futuristic appearance is further enhanced by 17-inch Crystal Cut alloy wheels, flush door handles, and puddle lights with Kia logo projection.

The interior layout is also reminiscent of the EV9, albeit on a smaller scale. According to Kia, the Syros is equipped with various segment-first features, including a 30-inch Trinity Panoramic Display comprised of two 12.3-inch screens and a five-inch climate control display.

Additionally, it offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, a Harman Kardon premium sound system with eight speakers, and a 64-colour ambient lighting system.

Kia stated that the Syros also comes with a call center-assisted navigation system that allows drivers to receive real-time guidance. Software and connectivity features will be updated over the air (OTA).

Another segment-first feature introduced by the Syros is the sliding and reclining, 60:40 split rear seats, which also come with ventilation. Behind the rear seats is a fairly large boot space with a capacity of 465 litres.

In terms of safety, the Syros comes with six airbags and a Level 2 ADAS system that includes 16 features such as Front Collision Warning, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Follow Assist, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, among others.

Customers can choose between two available engines: a Smartstream 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine producing 120 PS and 172 Nm, or a CRDi 1.5-litre diesel engine with 116 PS and 250 Nm. In addition to a manual transmission, an automatic transmission option is also available – both tasked to drive the front wheels.

Elderly woman returns manual RX-7 to Mazda Japan on her 80th birthday

Did you know that this silver Mazda RX-7 was owned and driven for 25 years by an elderly woman, Naoko Nishimoto?

In conjunction with her 80th birthday celebration on December 18, Naoko decided to voluntarily surrender her driver’s license and return her beloved RX-7 to Mazda Japan.

Her intention to sell the RX-7 captured public attention when it was featured on YouTube on September 2024, creating a significant phenomenon.

After her story aired, Naoko received over 400 emails, including one from Mazda’s Public Relations department.

Coincidentally, an engineer at Mazda watched the program and immediately contacted the PR department, stating, “Mazda should take over this (RX-7)!”

When Naoko read the email from Mazda, she remarked, “It was an email filled with enthusiasm and sincerity, and it seemed to shine for me.”

It is understood that the sender of the email also had a strong attachment to the Mazda RX-7.

Naoko’s story of her love for driving the manual RX-7 began when she was 55, at which point her Corona Coupe, owned for nearly a decade, started to have issues.

Coincidentally, she watched the animated series Initial D with her son and fell in love at first sight with the design of the Mazda RX-7 (FD3S).

She then promptly went to the nearest Mazda dealership to place an order, where at that time (1999), the price was around 3.2 million yen (approximately RM91,855).

Initially, Naoko wanted to choose a blue color as shown in the product brochure, but the Mazda salesperson suggested she opt for Highlight Silver Metallic.

“Looking back, I feel relieved that I chose that color,” she stated.

Thanks to the care and maintenance provided by Kyushu Mazda Akasako, Naoko’s RX-7 never experienced major problems during her 25 years of ownership.

The mileage of 77,592 km is evidence of her passion for the unique driving experience of the RX-7, which never made her feel fatigued, even on long journeys.

According to Naoko, she particularly loves the design of this sports car’s rear, especially the rear wing and the number seven on the license plate.

During the purchase process, the staff at Kyushu Mazda kindly handled all registration procedures, successfully obtaining the number 7 from the Land Transportation Bureau for the RX-7.

As a result, this became one of Naoko’s favorite features of the car.

Naoko also never found it difficult to drive the manual RX-7 in her hilly neighborhood in Nagasaki.

“When I first bought it, I felt nervous; however, now I have gotten used to it, and it is no longer a problem,” she expressed.

This Mazda RX-7 Type RB S package is powered by a 13B-REW engine with sequential twin turbocharging, capable of generating up to 265 PS and 294 Nm of torque.

Her story also captured the attention of Mazda President and CEO Moro Masahiro, who sent an appreciation letter read by Kosuke Doi, General Manager of Mazda’s Domestic Sales Division.

In the letter, Moro mentioned, “The RX-7 is the first model I was responsible for marketing after joining Mazda, so it holds special memories for me.”

“We will cherish this car, along with the stories of your (Naoko) joyful and vibrant life experiences.”

After the handover event, Naoko then proceeded to the Urakami police station in Nagasaki Prefecture to voluntarily return her driver’s license.

Mazda Japan promised to take excellent care of the RX-7 and plans to transfer the model to the R&D center in Yokohama for use as a public relations vehicle or to be exhibited at official events.

Liberty Walk launches the world’s first JDM mechanical keyboard, limited to just 500 units

Last year at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023, the renowned Japanese tuning company Liberty Walk unveiled the most controversial wide-body project to be fitted onto the classic supercar, the Ferrari F40.

While some people appreciate the approach taken by Liberty Walk, others have taken to criticizing it.

What is certain, however, is that the wide-body Ferrari F40 project has successfully drawn public attention, especially with its striking white finish and the presence of Japanese flag graphics on the sides.

The spirit of the Ferrari F40 Liberty Walk is continued with the introduction of a new product—a mechanical keyboard in collaboration with Original Konbini.

Described as the world’s first JDM mechanical keyboard, it is limited to only 500 units and will officially launch on December 31.

The keyboard’s frame is constructed from two blocks of aluminum, finished in a faded white color with red accents, Japanese flag graphics, RGB lighting, and features a USB-C wired connection.

Each purchase of this compact keyboard will come bundled with a mouse pad that can be used to showcase personal diecast car collections on your desk.

Liberty Walk has not disclosed the actual retail price of the mechanical keyboard; however, the term “limited edition” is enough to suggest that it will likely make a significant dent in your wallet.
