Hong Leong Yamaha launches road safety campaign themed ‘Terang Dalam Gelap’

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM), in collaboration with the Motorcycle & Scooter Dealer Association of Malaysia (MMSDA), recently launched its annual road safety campaign themed ‘Terang Dalam Gelap’ at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about nighttime riding safety while also offering safety initiatives including a helmet exchange program, motorcycle safety checks, and interactive public activities.

HLYM adopted a new approach by holding the campaign in the evening, aligning it with local community activities and bustling bazaar areas.

In addition, it employs a creative storytelling approach using illustrated characters and interactive digital engagement to reinforce road safety messages.

In this way, HLYM hopes that the implemented campaign will make a more effective impact, while ensuring motorcycles are ready for a safer and smoother ‘balik kampung’ journey.

According to Dato’ Professor Dr. Jim Khor, Group Managing Director of Hong Leong Industries Berhad, “At HLYM, our role goes beyond simply providing motorcycles; we care about our riders’ safety.

“‘Terang Dalam Gelap’ is more than just a campaign; it’s our way of looking out for the community and equipping them with the right knowledge and tools to ride safely,” he stated.

HLYM will also continue this safety campaign initiative by organizing a Free Motorcycle Inspection Campaign at all authorized Yamaha dealers nationwide from March 20 to March 27, 2025.

Motorcyclists participating in this campaign will receive a free motorcycle inspection and have the chance to win exciting prizes sponsored by Genblu Reward.

Yamaha unveils series parallel hybrid system prototype for mid-sized scooters

Not just building on the simple hybrid systems that already used in its existing production models, Yamaha has now presented the Series Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SPHEV) prototype, specifically engineered for the mid-class scooter segment.

This parallel hybrid system combines an engine with two electric motors fitted onto a modified XMAX scooter.

One of the electric motors is used to drive the wheels, while the other is directly connected to the engine to generate electric power.

Similar to any hybrid powertrain, the SPHEV system offers an electric driving mode that operates without engine assistance, a series hybrid driving mode for more efficient riding, and an engine operation mode for higher speeds.

Interestingly, the SPHEV system also features a boost mode.

The dual boost mode will harness power from both the engine and the drive motor, while the triple boost mode will utilize power from the generator motor.

In addition to scooters, Yamaha is also exploring the potential of this powertrain unit for integration with other models, such as street bikes and sports bikes.

Yamaha FZ mild hybrid version hits the Indian market

Unlike the electric motorcycle and scooter segment, it can be challenging to find two-wheeled machines powered by hybrid engines.

Kawasaki has previously unveiled two hybrid models, the Ninja 7 Hybrid and Z7 Hybrid.

What about Yamaha?

At the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, which took place last month, Yamaha Motor India showcased a naked motorcycle that was once popular in Malaysia—the FZ.

More specifically, it’s the all-new Yamaha FZ-S Hybrid, powered by a single-cylinder 149 cc air-cooled engine that produces 12.4 hp and 13.3 Nm of torque.

Unlike the hybrid systems found in Kawasaki machines, the FZ-S Hybrid relies on a mild-hybrid system, where extra power is supplied by an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).

While there is no benefit in terms of zero-emission riding, assistance from the electric motor can enhance the characteristics of the 150 cc engine to feel more like a 200 cc, especially during acceleration or when overtaking vehicles.

With this mild-hybrid system, it’s possible for the 13-liter fuel tank to achieve a riding range of over 480 km.

Other features include:

  • 41 mm front telescopic forks
  • Single shock absorber with 7-level preload adjustment
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Seat height of 790 mm
  • Traction control system (TCS)
  • 282 mm front brake rotor, 220 mm rear
  • Single-channel ABS braking system

In the Indian market, the Yamaha FZ-S Hybrid is priced at INR 130,700 (approximately RM 6,600).

Yamaha establishes Enyring for e-bike battery swap in Europe, beginning 1H 2025

YAMAHA has announced the establishment of a new company called Enyring, which will offer battery exchange services based on subscription in Europe.

According to the official images provided, this Yamaha battery exchange service is seen to use smaller-sized battery units compared to Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e units.

In addition to offering electric scooter battery exchange subscription plans to users, Enyring will also collaborate with leaders in Europe to recycle used batteries.

In doing so, Yamaha will create a closed-loop system that relies entirely on recycling materials to produce the latest products.

Enyring will be based in Berlin, Germany, with operations set to commence in the first half of 2025. To start, Enyring will establish battery exchange infrastructure in two major cities, Berlin and Amsterdam.

The selection of these two locations is considered highly suitable as the use of bicycles and electric scooters has already become popular among the local population.
