“It’s a car, not a phone”: Volkswagen reintroduces physical control buttons

After several years, Volkswagen has finally admitted that the minimalist approach taken in the design of their vehicle cabins was a significant mistake.

This minimalist approach involved cramming all vehicle control functions into a central touchscreen and completely removing physical control buttons from the cabin.

In a report by Autocar, VW’s head of design Andreas Mindt acknowledged this mistake and promised to revert to a previous approach.

“Starting with the ID.2all model and beyond, we will reintroduce physical control buttons for the five most important functions – audio volume, temperature control for both the driver and passenger sides, airflow control, and hazard lights – beneath the main screen.

“This functionality will be reimplemented in every vehicle we produce. This time, we will not repeat this mistake.

“On the steering wheel, we will also bring back physical buttons. They provide feedback, create a real experience, and people will appreciate this feature.

“To be honest, it’s a car, not a phone,” he added.

The measures taken by VW are also a response to requirements set by Euro NCAP, which starting in 2026, will not allow a vehicle to achieve the maximum five-star rating unless it features physical controls for the horn, windshield wipers, turn signals, hazard lights, and SOS functions.

Since Tesla pioneered this minimalist approach, more manufacturers have attempted to follow the trend by offering simpler cabin layouts — meaning drivers must rely entirely on the screen to change necessary settings, especially while driving.

The situation has worsened with some vehicle models that do not have physical levers for turn signals, windshield wipers, or transmission.

In fact, in the name of cost savings, some manufacturers have even relocated window switches to the central console. While this creates a minimalist appearance, it ultimately complicates the user experience.

Volkswagen ID.Every1 is brand’s most affordable EV at just RM96k

Volkswagen has confirmed its entry into the entry-level EV segment with the introduction of the ID.Every1, the smallest model in its all-electric ID lineup.

Although the model is still at the concept concept stage, it could hit the market sooner than you think. Volkswagen has announced that the production version will be launched in 2027, with a starting price of around €20,000 (RM95,555).

In addition to the ID.Every1, the company has revealed plans to introduce the ID.2all a year prior, carrying an estimated price tag of around €25,000 (RM119,461).

Both models are part of Volkswagen’s Electric Urban Car lineup, utilising the MEB modular electric drive platform with front-wheel drive.

The ID.Every1 will take over the baton from the e-up!, which ceased production in 2023. In terms of size, it is 280 mm longer than its predecessor, measuring 3,880 mm in length. The height stands at 1,490 mm, while the width reaches 1,816 mm.

It’s worth noting that the design you see is not the final version destined for production. Expect some changes in various areas, such as the side mirrors, door handles, and wheels.

While it may appear teeny, the car is spacious enough to comfortably seat four passengers, with a boot capacity of 305 litres.

The cabin design looks futuristic, but with a large infotainment screen, a small driver display, and a low centre console, it certainly looks like many other EVs on the market today.

According to Volkswagen, the ID.Every1 will be the first model within the Volkswagen Group to feature a new software architecture that enables the vehicle to receive updates and upgrades throughout its entire life cycle.

Powering the ID.Every1 will be a newly developed electric motor generating 95 PS (70 kW), allowing the compact EV to achieve a top speed of 130 km/h.

While the battery capacity has yet to be disclosed, Volkswagen claims that this car can cover at least 250 km on a single charge.

Volkswagen Golf R Mk8.5 arrives with 333 PS and ChatGPT

VOLKSWAGEN has introduced the Golf R facelift, which not only comes with a fresher design and the latest features but also a more powerful engine.

As with the pre-facelift model, the Golf R Mk8.5 is available in both the five-door hatchback and estate (known as the Golf R Variant) guises.

At first glance, it may appear similar to the Mk8 Golf R, but the facelifted version has a fresher front fascia made up of new LED Plus headlights, larger intakes on the bumper, and illuminated LED strips and VW logo.

Customers can now opt for the available 19-inch Warmenau wheels, which the automaker claims weigh only 8 kg each and have a more efficient design for brake cooling.

Inside, you will find a 12.9-inch touchscreen display (the largest offered by Volkswagen to date) with improved operation and a 10.2-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster with a new Sport Skin display mode.

The infotainment system now includes the voice assistant IDA, which accesses the AI-based software ChatGPT to answer questions. The responsiveness of the steering wheel touch panels has been optimised, the brand said.

Customers looking to spruce up cabin can do so by ticking the box for the Nappa leather upholstery and rear carbon fibre trim.

Like before, the Golf R Mk8.5 is powered by the EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, but this time the output has been bumped up from 320 PS to 333 PS, making it the most powerful Golf ever produced.

The engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission tasked with delivering power to the wheels through the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with R-Performance Torque Vectoring.

Although torque remains at 420 Nm, the 0-100 km/h acceleration time has been cut short by 0.2 seconds to just 4.6 seconds. Needless to say, the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

However, the figure can be increased to 270 km/h if equipped with the optional R-Performance package.

Said package also adds two more driving modes, namely Drift and Special. The former needs no explanation, while the latter is specifically adapted to the conditions on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Not stopping there, Volkswagen also throws in a GPS lap timer and G-meter – both of which are displayed in the Digital Cockpit Pro.

VW wants to use part of its EV budget for development of combustion engines

IT is safe to say that the transition towards full electric (EV) is not progressing as some manufacturers expected. Several manufacturers have delayed their electrification goals.

Just last year, Volkswagen projected that EVs would account for up to 80 percent of vehicle sales in Europe by the end of this decade. However, the lukewarm reception of their ID models has led VW to reassess their strategy.

Of the 180 billion Euros (RM914 billion) budget allocated in 2023 for new-generation EVs, the German manufacturer will now use one-third of it for the development of combustion engines.

This announcement came from Arn Antlitz, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at Volkswagen Group. “The company aims to spend approximately 60 billion Euros (RM304 billion) to ensure our combustion cars remain competitive.”

He added, “The future is electric, but the past has not yet ended.”

Last year, VW CEO Thomas Schäfer referred to ICE as “old technology” in the context of e-fuel. He stated that synthetic fuels were just “unnecessary noise,” even though Porsche, also part of the same group, is actively involved in synthetic fuels at its plant in Chile.

Another premium brand under VW is also researching how sustainable fuels can evolve. Bugatti plans to build fuel stations that can be installed at owners’ homes and filled with synthetic fuels.

Lamborghini believes combustion engines can be saved by making them run on fuels other than fossil oil. Bentley is also exploring fuels with almost zero carbon emissions.

It is clear that more car manufacturers are reassessing their EV strategies as consumers are not yet ready to let go of ICE engines.

Manufacturers are somewhat aggressive as emission standards become stricter, necessitating investment in cleaner-running petrol engines. At the same time, the influx of EVs from China is also concerning major manufacturers.

Volkswagen once stuffed a VR6 engine into a Mk6 Golf

In the span of eight generations, the Volkswagen Golf has brought forth countless special edition models. One of the highly coveted models is a sixth-generation Golf powered by the VR6 engine.

However, due to unknown reasons, the car never saw the light of day. Had it been made available to buyers, it still would have been the most powerful Golf model in the market.

According to Enrico Beltz, Chief of Content, Classic Communication & Media Relations, the VR6-powered was built as a one-off model in 2009, before the release of Golf R Mk6.

The 3.2-litre engine fitted into said Golf was essentially the same engine found in the Golf R32 but that particular unit was tuned and built by Rothe Motorsport.

While the original naturally-aspirated version had only 247 hp, the reworked engine made a whopping 463 hp and 520 Nm of torque.

The upgrades made include a Garret GT35 turbocharger, custom pistons, a new intake manifold, new injectors, aluminum pressure pipes, and Rothe Motorsport exhaust valves, to name a few.

VW also fitted brakes from an Audi RS6, 19-inch wheels from Lamborghini, and Bilstein B16 suspension system. The interior was reupholstered with Alcantara and leather wrapping on the dashboard.

The performance figures were never disclosed, but with a dual-clutch seven-speed transmission, all-wheel drive system, and a weight of around 1,360 kg, it would have been able to keep up with any modern supercar. VW claims it is capable of achieving speeds exceeding 250 km/h.

Golf GTI W12-650

Interestingly, this was not the last Golf to be equipped with the VR6 engine. In 2013, the German manufacturer introduced the Golf Design Vision GTI concept car with over 500 hp. Two years later, the Golf GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo emerged with 503 hp on tap.

If you think the VR6 is the largest engine ever crammed into the Golf, you are mistaken. 17 years ago, VW did the unthinkable by stuffing a 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine from the Bentley Continental GT into a Golf Mk5-based concept car.

Known as the Golf GTI W12-650, the car had 641 hp, front brakes from an Audi RS4, and rear axle and brakes from a Lamborghini Gallardo.

CKD Volkswagen Golf R officially on sale at RM334k

VOLKSWAGEN Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has announced the official sale of the locally assembled Golf R, at the recommended retail price of RM334,012 on-the-road without insurance.

The price is inclusive of Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which supports owners with a five-year maintenance, five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and five-year roadside assistance.

The Golf R comes standard with the R Performance Package, which includes a titanium Akrapovič exhaust, 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels, a new rear spoiler, as well as Drift and Special modes.

The Drift and Special modes – accessible through the R button on the steering wheel, extend the range of customisation modes for the drivetrain and chassis to inject even more excitement to the driving experience.

In Drift mode, torque is prioritised to the rear wheels for fluid and controlled slides. The Special mode, which is specifically designed for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, adjusts suspension settings for optimum contact.

Powering the Golf R is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine pushing out 320 PS and 400 Nm of torque. With a seven-speed wet-type, dual-clutch DSG transmission, the Golf R rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds to reach a maximum speed of 250 km/h.

Stability and traction is maintained via its 4Motion all-wheel drive system with performance torque vectoring.

Visually, the flagship model of the Golf range is identified by its motorsport-inspired R front bumper and R radiator grille. Three colour choices are available – the signature Lapiz Blue, Deep Black and Pure White.

Inside, there’s R decorative trim in Carbon Grey, premium Nappa sport leather seats, as well as the R performance steering wheel with blue backlit R button and shift paddles.

Other new features include a head-up display, 10-inch Discover Pro infotainment system, a 10-speaker, 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system, wireless smartphone charging and automatic high beam assist.

The Golf R is supported with IQ.Drive, which comprises Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Side Assist, Front Assist, Lane Assist and Emergency Assist.

Volkswagen recalls 6,671 cars in Malaysia over Takata airbag issue

VOLKSWAGEN Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has issued a recall involving 6,671 vehicles manufactured between 2010 and 2014 following a Takata airbag safety issue.

This recall campaign involves six Volkswagen models, namely the sixth-generation Golf GTI, Eos, Passat CC, Polo, Beetle, and Vento, which are equipped with a specific driver front airbag gas generator housing.

According to VPCM, the concern with the front driver airbag housing generator is caused by deterioration of the generator’s propellant due to high air humidity and temperature fluctuations over a long period of time. This could lead to potential injury on the driver and passenger.

In an official statement, the company said that they have taken the necessary steps with its dealer partners to ensure parts availability and that the recall is conducted smoothly and efficiently. The nationwide recall will be carried out in phases to manage the number of cases.

“All notifications to identified owners, based on the Volkswagen database will be conducted by email and WhatsApp, and customers who purchased the vehicle from a previous owner or a used car dealership are advised to urgently contact the nearest Volkswagen authorised dealer for verification,” it said.

Should parts replacement be required in the event of parts replacement, all labour and replacement parts for this service will be at no cost to owners, the company added.

Owners may visit https://www.volkswagen.com.my/volkswagen-service/repair-and-service/service-action and key in their 17-digit VIN number which can be found at the bottom left of their vehicle’s windscreen.
