Mercedes wants to put big chunks of its budget into combustion engines

After realizing that their electrification goals may be too ambitious, Mercedes is now allocating a significant portion of their budget to internal combustion engines.

According to an interview with the German media Wirtschaftswoche, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius stated that ICE (internal combustion engine) technology “will persist until after 2030”. Significant investments are needed to ensure that these engines continue to comply with increasingly stringent standards.

Källenius mentioned that the S-Class and its facelift are expected in 2026, stating, “We have invested significantly more in updating the S-Class model with combustion engines than we typically do for a facelift.”

Mercedes’ goal is to ensure that their conventional engines are at the “highest level of technology”. Without significant investment in petrol and diesel engines, the luxury brand “will abruptly halt combustion engine sales around 2027 or 2028”.

Mercedes realized the need to acknowledge that the transition to EVs was not progressing as planned. Three years ago, they mentioned that PHEV and EV vehicles would represent approximately 50 percent of annual sales by 2025.

However, it seems unlikely. At one point, Mercedes stated they would be fully electric by 2030 in some countries “if market conditions allow”.

Now, their new goal is for PHEV and EV to represent half of sales by the end of this decade (2030). However, according to Källenius, the objective for carbon neutrality by 2040 remains unchanged.

Malaysia’s Hayden Haikal won first GT4 race in Thailand Super Series

Malaysia’s Hayden Haikal proved he has what it takes to move up the ranks in the Thailand Super Series Championship when he raced to victory in his first ever drive in a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT4. His victory also gave the newly-minted Racing Aurora – a Malaysian team – its first GT4 Class and international win.

The 19-year-old completed the 1-hour + 1 lap race around the 4.554km Chang International Circuit, 26 seconds clear of his nearest contender K. Kantadhee in a Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport.

Having competed and finishing third in the Super Eco Class 30 minutes earlier, Hayden joined The Super Series Supercar GT4 race 27 minutes after the start, taking over from his Racing Aurora team mate Peter Hackett at the mid-point compulsory driver change. Up to that point, Kantadhee had been in the lead with an 8-second advantage.

In a series of events that unfolded during the stop, AAS Motorport’s Kantadhee was held back in the pit as mechanics worked to remove a delaminated wrap on his bonnet, while another contender, the ZW Zoomies pair of P. Prakhun and A. Warren in another Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport was slapped with a 2-second stop-and-go penalty for breaching the minimum pit stop time limit.

Unaware of these incidents, Hayden piled on the pressure at the head of the GT4 pack gradually extending his lead from a mere 8 seconds to finish well clear of any opposition.

“Pulling double duty (competing in the Super Eco and GT4 Class) and to come away with my first race win in GT4 is just a phenomenal feeling and I would like to thank Peter (Hackett), Racing Aurora and sponsors for making all of this possible,” said Hayden.

“I look forward to this being the start of a strong season ahead for both the team and I.”

Race 2 tomorrow (Sunday 5, May) will see Hayden starting the race before handing over to Hackett, who was the 2001 Australian Formula 3 champion.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has announced the arrival of the GLE 2024 in the local market. This medium-sized premium SUV is offered in the single variant of GLE450 4Matic, priced at RM528,888.

Assembled at the MBM plant in Pekan, Pahang, the 2024 Mercedes GLE450 has been enhanced both externally and internally compared to the previous model. Updates include redesigned front and rear lights, bumper design, and grille.

It also comes with the AMG Line package, featuring 21-inch AMG rims, larger brakes, and sporty cladding on the wheel arches. The GLE450 2024 is now available in four color options: Obsidian Black, Selenite Grey, High-tech Silver, and a new “highlight” color, Manufaktur Diamond White Bright.

Mercedes Vision EQXX completed 1,000km journey with 300km range left!

MERCEDES has once again sent their electric vehicle (EV) concept car – Vision EQXX – on a long-distance journey to test its efficiency. This time, it was tested in the Arabian Peninsula to demonstrate that EVs can be driven long distances even in desert heat.

The Vision EQXX recently traveled a distance of 627.6 miles (1,010km) from the Mercedes-Benz Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to the Mercedes-Benz Brand Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The journey took 14 hours and 42 minutes.

Despite temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius, the EV remained efficient with a power usage of only 7.4kWh per 100km. For comparison, it recorded 8.3kWh/100km during a test from Germany to England.

The Vision EQXX also had a remaining range of 192 miles (309km) when it reached its destination in Dubai. This theoretically means that the EV can be driven for up to 820 miles (1,319km) on a full charge.

This test result is a positive outcome for Mercedes engineers as extreme temperatures (too hot or too cold) can have a negative impact on the driving range of EVs. To mitigate the impact of temperature on the batteries, the Vision EQXX uses a special heat pump to cool the cabin, which Mercedes claims has minimal effect on the driving range.

To further enhance power efficiency, the Vision EQXX test unit is equipped with 117 solar cells. During the test, these cells generated 1.8kWh of energy, adding a range of 15 miles (24km). Mercedes stated that they will incorporate this feature into the production cars.

Also tested during this driving trial is the smart assistance system. This system provides recommendations to the driver on how to drive more efficiently, and it is indeed intelligent.

In this case, it also takes into account crosswinds from the coast to help the driver maximize the battery range. During stops, it assists in finding the most ideal parking space to receive sunlight for recharging the solar system.

The MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) system in this GLA is the latest generation, featuring Navigation Assistance, 64-color ambient lighting, and connectivity with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The GLA200 also comes with five USB-C charging sockets with illumination.

Safety features have also been enhanced. The GLA200 now comes with Blind Spot Assist, Exit Warning Assist, Active Brake Assist, and a Parking Package along with the Mirror Package. Other technologies in this SUV include Keyless-Go, Handsfree Access, Tirefit, and the Easy-Pack power tailgate.

The Mercedes GLA200 is powered by a 1.3-liter engine with an output of 163hp and 250Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7G-DCT), enabling this front-wheel-drive SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.

Dynamic Select is also standard, offering Sport, Comfort, and Eco modes. These settings will adjust the engine response, transmission, suspension, and steering.

The 2024 Mercedes GLA200 is a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) model, offered at a price of RM258,888 (on-the-road without insurance). Buyers can also opt for the new Spectral Blue color for this SUV.
