2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA debuts as an electric sedan, hybrid version to follow

With the A-Class sedan no longer on offer, the third-generation CLA-Class coupe sedan now bears the heavy responsibility of being Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level sedan.

Competing against the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, the CLA features larger dimensions, measuring 4,722 mm in length (+41 mm) and with a wheelbase now increased by 61 mm to 2,789 mm.

However, these dimensional changes primarily benefit the driver and rear passengers, who will enjoy more legroom.

Rear passengers, on the other hand, will have to contend with slightly reduced leg space.

To start, the CLA-Class is available in a fully electric (EV) version with two variants offered.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ with EQ Technology comes equipped with a rear-wheel-drive electric motor producing 268 hp and 335 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h in just 6.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 209 km/h.

Meanwhile, the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology features a dual-motor setup (349 hp/515 Nm) and an all-wheel-drive system, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

With an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, this entry-level electric sedan can achieve a range of 672-771 km, or up to 694-792 km for the 250+ variant.

The 800-volt electrical architecture provides DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 320 kW, allowing owners to add up to 325 km of range in just 10 minutes.

A hybrid variant is also expected to be introduced later, which will feature a 1.5-liter engine paired with a 1.3 kWh battery pack, 48-volt technology, and an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In terms of exterior design, the EV variant of the CLA features a grille panel adorned with a glowing three-pointed star, while the hybrid variant sports a more traditional grille structure.

The Mercedes star element is also incorporated into the front and rear headlight units.

Compared to its predecessor, the 2026 CLA has an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.21, thanks to its flush door handles, sleeker roofline, and more aerodynamic wheel designs (ranging from 17 to 19 inches).

To make the cabin feel more luxurious, Mercedes offers the MBUX Superscreen system, which includes a 10.25-inch instrument cluster display and a pair of 14-inch screens.

The MBUX Superscreen is powered by the Mercedes-Benz Operating System and features artificial intelligence capabilities, showcasing ChatGPT-4, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini.

In addition to its focus on screens, the 2026 CLA will also come equipped with a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, heated front seats, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and a single-zone climate control system.

For the first time, a Mercedes vehicle offers a front trunk (frunk) with a capacity of 71 liters, complementing the rear cargo space of 405 liters.

For fans of internal combustion engines (ICE), unfortunately you cannot enjoy this feature.

We will keep making V8 and V12 engines – Mercedes-Benz

This is good news for fans of V8 and V12 engines from AMG. During its annual results conference recently, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would continue to offer these engines.

For the V12 engine, the German manufacturer plans to keep producing it for the long term, although only for specific markets.

This is not really surprising, as currently, only one Mercedes model utilises the 12-cylinder mill, namely the Maybach S680. With a displacement of 6.0-litres and a pair turbochargers, the engine generates 612 PS and 900 Nm of torque.

Among the trio of German luxury brands, Mercedes will be the last to retain a 12-cylinder engine in its lineup. The last time BMW had a V12 model was in 2022 with the M760i, while Audi exited the segment in 2017 with the W12-powered A8.

Furthermore, Mercedes stated that it is developing a “next-generation, high-tech electrified V8” for models built on the AMG.EA platform. The engine is being developed to comply with stricter Euro 7 emission standards.

It is uncertain whether the next-generation C63 will adopt the new engine, but looking at the lacklustre response to the current four-cylinder hybrid model, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

The automaker made no mention of the inline-six engine used by the S580e and CLS53, hence it’s safe to assume that it will soldier on.

When it comes to four-cylinder engines though, Mercedes said will debut a 1.5-litre 48-volt hybrid engine paired with an eight-speed DCT transmission in the new CLA next month.

Mercedes-Benz EQS will be killed after its first generation

The lifespan of the luxurious electric sedan Mercedes-Benz EQS may not last as long as expected.

This is because according to the latest report from Autocar, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the electric sedan will be replaced with an electric version of the S-Class.

“In the future, there will be two versions of the S-Class, namely ICE and electric,” he said.

Unlike the current approach, Mercedes-Benz will use the same design for both models, although they will not be based on the same platform.

According to the report, the electric S-Class sedan will be built on a specific EV platform, while the ICE version will continue to use the improved MRA architecture.

The approach of the same design for two different powertrain models has already been used by its competitor BMW in the new generation models of the 5-Series and 7-Series.

The name EQS is also likely to be dropped, referring to the long name used by the previously launched electric-powered G-wagen (G580 with EQ Technology).

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has announced the arrival of the limited edition Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4Matic+ Limited Edition in the local market.

Since it’s a limited edition model, only 10 units of the A45 S Limited Edition will be offered in Malaysia, each priced at RM558,888 OTR without insurance. Bookings can be made through the online showroom at Mercedes-Benz Store.

First and foremost, the A45 S Limited Edition sets itself apart from the standard version through the AMG Green Hell Magno colour, which was first introduced in 2018 through the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

The striking green hue is complemented by yellow stripes on the body and rims, as well as the AMG crest on the bonnet and ’45 S’ lettering on the doors. It rides on 19-inch AMG forged wheels in a model-exclusive seven-twin-spoke design.

Hidden behind the wheels are AMG High Performance brake calipers which are coloured glossy black and have white AMG logos.

Completing the exterior package are the exclusive fuel cap with the AMG logo and the light projector that shines the AMG coat of arms onto the road when you get in and out of the vehicle.

The A45 S Limited Edition comes with three equipment packages, namely the AMG Night Package, AMG Night Package II, and AMG Aerodynamics Package.

The AMG Night Package includes elements in black and high-gloss black such as the front splitter, side mirrors, and beltline, while the AMG Night Package II brings darkened struts on the radiator trim as well as the black chrome typography on the front fenders and tailgate.

The AMG Aerodynamics Package, as the name suggests, includes special add-on parts and a fixed AMG rear wing that were developed in a wind tunnel.

With an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds before maxing out at 270 km/h.

5 things we don’t fancy about the Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4Matic

For the Malaysian market, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4Matic, along with the SUV version, represents the flagship offerings in the brand’s electric vehicle lineup.

It was first launched in Malaysia in July 2022 in the fully imported EQS 450+ guise. Less than a year later, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) pulled the covers off the locally assembled EQS 500 at its manufacturing plant in Pekan, Pahang.

Undeniably, as the highest variant in its lineup, the EQS 500 offers luxury and top technology for its customers, but for this writer, it still has some discernible shortcomings.

It’s not an S-Class

Some may have thought that the EQS is the electric version of the S-Class. This may be true in some ways but it is worth noting that the EQS is based on the automaker’s dedicated electric platform known as Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA), while the S-Class is underpinned by the Modular Rear Architecture (MRA2) platform.

This gives the EQS a slightly smaller footprint than the S-Class, with a length of 5,216 mm, width of 1,926 mm, and height of 1,512 mm. The wheelbase is also 6 mm shorter at 3,210 mm. The interior is spacious but not as roomy as the S-Class.

Unconventional design

Unlike the S-Class, which exudes elegance in its traditional ‘three-box’ shape, the EQS has a much more unique appearance highlighted by its oval-shaped body. According to Mercedes, the shape plays a significant role in helping the EQS achieve a drag coefficient of 0.20, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars in the world.

While most were intrigued by its futuristic appearance, this writer can’t help but think how the EQS looks like an egg on wheels.

The MBUX Hyperscreen takes the cake but…

Inside, the centrepiece is Mercedes-Benz’s impressive MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system, which combines three displays: a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, a 17.1-inch OLED touchscreen in the middle, and a 12.3-inch OLED touchscreen for the front passenger.

It has to be said that the giant display does make the EQS look somewhat like a spaceship, but the glass panel picks up smudges and fingerprints easily.

Say auf Wiedersehen to physical buttons

Save for the start stop and hazard light buttons, the majority of the vehicle’s functions, including the air conditioning system, can only be accessed through the central touchscreen. Needless to say, this will increase driver distraction.

On top of that, the touch panels on the steering wheel are not exactly user-friendly, and it will take some time getting used to.

Air suspension is supple but a little too soft

On the highway, the EQS demonstrates why Mercedes-Benz’s air suspension is among the best in the market. It absorbs every undulating surface so smoothly that long journeys are hardly felt.

However, on normal roads, this writer needs to be careful as the suspension is quite soft and tends to bottom out if the car is driven too fast over bumps. The suspension can be raised to increase the ground clearance but that means having to fiddle with the infotainment menu while driving.

Mercedes-Benz EQE gains three new variants, from RM380k

MERCEDES-BENZ Malaysia (MBM) has expanded its EQE lineup with the launch of three new variants, namely the EQE 350+ Electric Art Line, EQE 350+ SUV Electric Art Line, and EQE 350+ SUV AMG Line.

Mercedes to stop using EQ for future EV models, revert to traditional naming

MERCEDES is reported to be considering discontinuing the use of the ‘EQ’ name for future fully electric vehicle (EV) models. According to a report by AutoExpress, this step will be taken after the end of life of all current first-generation EVs.

The German manufacturer will return to using traditional naming structures for their non-EV models. Currently, almost all Mercedes EV models have ‘EQ’ in their names, from EQA to EQS.

An exception was made for the G-Class, which was launched in Beijing last month. It was not called EQG as expected, but instead was named G580 with EQ Technology. This signifies a new direction in the naming of the brand’s EV models.

“EQ is a technical beginning, Mercedes-Benz in the future will not become EQ,” said Mercedes’ product manager, Tobi Mantele. “EQ is a technical platform for us. Once you move towards full electrification, you don’t want to undermine a brand like the S-Class, for example,” added another Mercedes spokesperson.

This direction also indicates that Mercedes wants to normalize EV as a regular model line and will use naming conventions similar to petrol and diesel models.

At the same time, Mercedes will not only offer pure EVs, but their electrification will also include plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. “We don’t want to completely eliminate the opportunities with our existing ICE platforms. We have top-performing PHEVs in the range, and we will update them,” said the spokesperson.
