Hyundai, LG open first EV battery plant in Indonesia

Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution inaugurated the opening of the first electric vehicle battery production plant in Indonesia last week.

With an annual battery cell capacity of 10 Gigawatt-hours (GWh), the plant is capable of supplying the battery packs needed for over 150,000 EV units, starting with the Kona Electric followed by various Hyundai and Kia models.

The opening of the plant is part of both parties’ commitment to invest up to $9.8 billion (RM46.14 billion) to develop the EV supply chain in the largest economy in Southeast Asia.

Hyundai and LGES are also prepared to develop the second phase of the plant involving a $2 billion (RM9.42 billion) investment to increase the annual battery cell capacity by 20 GWh.

Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, explained that the battery plant will strengthen Indonesia in the global EV supply chain.

“This is the first and largest EV battery cell plant in Southeast Asia, and I believe we will be able to compete with other countries due to the availability of nickel, bauxite, and copper resources here,” he said.

Indonesia has the world’s largest nickel reserves, where the country imposed a ban on raw nickel exports in 2020 to encourage investment in domestic metal processing.

Honda Prelude confirmed for UK, hybrid sports coupe utilizing the Civic platform

Honda has previously revived the iconic Integra name for use in the American and Chinese markets.

Despite sporting a different appearance, it still brings one notable similarity – using the base of the Honda Civic.

Now, another iconic name is set to be given a new lease of life, that is the Honda Prelude where this two-door sports car is expected to be offered in the European market in the coming decade.

Similar to the two mentioned Honda Integra models, this new generation Honda Prelude will also be built based on the Honda Civic platform.

In addition to being offered in left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) versions, Honda is expected to market the Prelude sports car with the e:HEV hybrid technology that already exists in the current Civic model.

In its current configuration, the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter hybrid engine is capable of producing up to 181 hp and 232 Nm of torque, but there are reports that the figures will be increased to 208 hp specifically for the Prelude model.

This new generation Honda Prelude also promises an enjoyable driving experience that can be achieved through the perfect balance between driving dynamics and fuel efficiency.

Certainly, chief engineer Tomoyuki Yamagami has previously emphasized that the Honda Prelude will not be a sportier model than the Honda Civic Type R.

Based on the official images provided, this red Honda Prelude does not bring significant design changes compared to the concept unit showcased during the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

All four wheel arches are now paired with 20-inch black rims, followed by red brake calipers and a carbon fiber body kit to match.

So far, Honda has not revealed details regarding the cabin design, but considering the low hood structure and high windshield, it can offer a wider field of vision.

The good news is that this sixth-generation Honda Prelude will be showcased to the public at the Goodwood Festival of Speed taking place this week.

BYD opens its first EV assembly plant in Thailand

The Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD has recently launched the opening of its first vehicle assembly plant in the Southeast Asia region.

The plant, located in Rayong, Thailand, has a production capacity of approximately 150,000 units per year and will serve as the assembly location for its four key models, namely Dophin, Atto 3, Song, and Sealion.

Additionally, one of BYD’s subsidiaries is reported to be establishing a battery production plant at the same location.

Thailand has traditionally been a hub for assembly and regional car exports, long dominated by Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, and Isuzu.

By 2030, the country aims to transition 30 percent of its annual production of 2.5 million vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). As a result, BYD plans to make Thailand its manufacturing hub for exports to the ASEAN market and other countries.

In addition to Thailand, the EV company is also reportedly planning to open its second ASEAN assembly plant in Indonesia by 2026.

Japan wants to build a 500 km conveyor belt system to address truck driver shortage

Those who have traveled abroad are surely impressed by the efficiency of staff and machinery at airports in handling hundreds to thousands of bags in a day. Now, imagine the same system, but over a longer distance.

Yes, that is one of the solutions being proposed by the Japanese Ministry of Transport in an effort to address the increasingly acute shortage of truck drivers each year. According to Japan News, a system called Autoflow Road, or simply a conveyor belt system, will be built to connect Tokyo and Osaka over 500 km for the purpose of distributing cargo.

This conveyor belt system can be built adjacent to existing main roads or using underground routes. With continuous operation every day, theoretically, this system can handle the same cargo delivery capacity made by 25,000 truck drivers in a day.

As previously reported, Japan is expected to face a shortage of up to 36 percent of the workforce needed to handle 1.40 billion tons of cargo by 2030. By potentially reducing up to 25,000 trucks from the roads, it may help alleviate traffic congestion, reduce emission levels, and mitigate the impact of the labor shortage crisis.

The use of a conveyor belt system is not unfamiliar, as Japan itself already uses a similar method to transport limestone over 23 km. The main challenge, of course, is the construction cost.

According to a study conducted by a construction company, the cost of building an underground tunnel starts from ¥7 billion (RM204 million) and could reach up to ¥80 billion (RM2.3 billion) for every 10 km. Therefore, the total cost of building a system connecting Tokyo and Osaka could potentially reach up to ¥3.7 trillion (RM108.2 billion)!

Varis parts can make your GR Corolla look more aggressive

If you have the option to get a powerful and family-friendly hot hatch, the GR Corolla may very well be a suitable candidate.

Easy-to-control power, paired with a delightful clutch match, balanced suspension tuning, and most importantly an already aggressive appearance.

However, for a few owners who desire a more aggressive appearance for their GR Corolla, there is a solution offered by the leading tuner, Varis.

Starting from the front, Varis has developed a carbon fiber splitter priced at $1,695(RM7,984) for a fiercer look, followed by set of front turbulators priced at $645 (RM3,038) aimed at reducing drag and increasing downforce.

The side can be enhanced by the presence of a pair of carbon fiber side skirts priced at $2,295 (RM10,811), followed by the installation of carbon fiber rear diffuser at $845 (RM3,980), exhaust heat shield at $335 (RM1,578), and rear exhaust pipe protector priced at $695 (RM3,274).

Want a more aggressive look? Simply order a adjustable carbon fiber rear wing priced at $1,895 (RM8,926) and carbon fiber engine hood priced at $2,995 (RM14,108), but both components will take about 8 months to reach the customer’s hands.

As of now, Varis does not offer any mechanical modifications, meaning owners can still enjoy the standard 300 hp and 400 Nm torque from the G16E-GTS engine that powers all wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

Pagani Huayra Epitome, V12 hypercar with manual transmission!

Good news for manual transmission enthusiasts.

This is because Pagani has just launched a special edition Huayra model that will debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, and yes, it is the first Huayra model equipped with a manual gearbox!

The Pagani Huayra Epitome – epitomizing the pinnacle of Pagani – was created for an ultra-rich customer who truly desired a Huayra with a manual transmission.

The Xtrac seven-speed gearbox utilizes a state-of-the-art triple-disc clutch system for transferring torque from the powerful twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 Mercedes-AMG engine boasting 852 hp and 1,100 Nm more effectively.

From a technical perspective, the Huayra Epitome has nearly the same power as the Huayra Utopia, allowing it to reach a top speed of 350 km/h.

Pagani engineers also reworked the suspension aspects of this Epitome model to produce a lower roll and pitch effect compared to the standard Huayra.

However, there is also a “Super Soft” mode to enable owners to enjoy a more serene driving experience on the roads, which will automatically deactivate at a speed of 150 km/h.

The exterior of this Epitome has received slight design touches, especially on the front and rear bumpers, LED lighting system, and larger grilles for more efficient airflow.

At the rear, there is a large wing, followed by a diffuser and four titanium exhaust outlets capable of producing an alluring exhaust note.

Upon closer inspection, the blue hue used on the body panels of this Huayra Epitome is actually genuine carbon fiber weave.

Lastly, the Huayra Epitome is paired with gold-colored rims and similar accents in a few areas.

According to Pagani, the Grandi Complicazioni division took approximately nine months to design the Epitome, with an additional 10 months for completion.

Unfortunately, this exquisite design will only be produced once, meaning you may have to seek other alternatives to experience a Huayra Epitome – perhaps in the form of a diecast model.

Ferrari extends PHEV battery warranty period to 16 years

Cars with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems can offer unique benefits to buyers still hesitant to purchase EVs, but one lingering nightmare for some users is the relatively expensive cost of battery replacement.

This concern is particularly pronounced when they choose to purchase high-performance models such as Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars.

For Ferrari owners, the Prancing Horse brand now offers two extended warranty plans for PHEV models such as the SF90 Stradale, SF90 Spider, SF90 XX Stradale, SF90 XX Spider, 296 GTB, and 296 GTS.

The two plans in question are the Warranty Extension Hybrid and Power Hybrid, targeting Ferrari owners who want to maintain the performance and excellence of their hybrid sports cars over time.

The Warranty Extension Hybrid plan offers a warranty period of up to eight years of ownership, during which high-voltage batteries will be replaced at no additional cost.

Meanwhile, the Power Hybrid plan is a long-term plan that covers all main components, including the hybrid system, from the eighth to the sixteenth year.

This means that if the PHEV battery pack encounters issues in the sixteenth year, it will also be replaced free of charge.

Interestingly, in the future, supercar PHEV Ferrari owners may be able to enjoy much more advanced and sophisticated battery technology.

According to Ferrari, problematic high-voltage batteries will be replaced with new components that promise the same or even better performance than the original battery.

This long-term plan can also be transferred to any subsequent owner who purchases the supercar after the original owner sells it.

Ferrari also explains that this new plan is available for any supercar no longer covered under the original manufacturer’s warranty, but it requires a thorough technical inspection.

Geely ‘Short Blade’ EV battery can last up to 1 million km, bulletproof!

Geely Auto Group has unveiled a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery promising durability of up to one million kilometers, faster charging rates, and most importantly, greater safety for use.

According to Geely, this Short Blade battery has been tested for up to 3,500 charging cycles, equivalent to charging and driving for one million kilometers with minimal impact on driving range.

Based on an average annual driving distance of around 20,000 km, this Short Blade battery is capable of lasting up to 50 years, thereby extending the battery’s lifespan, enhancing the resale value of EVs, and reducing carbon emissions by over 80,000 tonnes per year.

Furthermore, Geely’s new battery is said to be capable of faster charging and operating more stably at low ambient temperatures – issues that have plagued current electric vehicles.

Test data indicates that the average charging time from 10-80 percent State of Charge (SoC) for this Short Blade battery is around 17 minutes and 4 seconds, compared to 26 minutes for a similar capacity blade battery.

In extreme cold temperatures, the Short Blade battery has a high discharge rate and offers a longer driving range compared to the long blade battery.

Moreover, in ambient temperatures below negative 30℃, the Short Blade battery can maintain a capacity retention rate of 90.54 percent, compared to the average value of 78.96 percent for the long blade battery.

Importantly, this new Geely battery pack offers more robust features, thanks to the use of high-strength materials and better heat resistance.

The Short Blade battery utilizes upgraded diaphragm and electrode structures, as well as Self-Fusing technology that can prevent the occurrence of short circuits commonly encountered in accident situations.

To prove the safety level of this latest battery, Geely conducted eight 5 mm needle puncture tests simultaneously, followed by leaving it for an hour without any negative effects.

Additionally, it also underwent a test of 5.8×42 mm rifle bullet shots where no incidents of thermal runaway occurred in the structure.

Most significantly, Geely also conducted six sets of more extreme tests than industry standards, including immersion in seawater, extremely cold environments, high-frequency package bottom abrasion, 26-ton load rollover, side impact, and fire tests.

According to CarNewsChina, this Short Blade battery will debut in the Geely Galaxy E5 electric SUV model, scheduled to launch in early August.

Two battery pack capacities are offered, namely 49.52 kWh with a range of up to 440 km, and a 60.22 kWh battery pack with a driving range of up to 530 km (according to CLTC data).

Suzuki is reported to be taking a drastic step by discontinuing the sales of four of its key models in the UK to make way for electric vehicle (EV) models.

The four vehicle models in question are the Suzuki Ignis, Suzuki Jimny LCV, Suzuki Swace, and Suzuki Swift Sport.

These four pure internal combustion engine (ICE) models will cease sales as early as 2025, or possibly sooner if distributor stocks run out.

This means that Suzuki will only have a lineup of hybrid models next year, consisting of the new generation Swift, Vitara, S-Cross, and Across PHEV, before the first EV emerges after the second half of 2025.

According to Dale Wyatt, the boss of Suzuki UK, “We will be exiting the ICE era with a focus on SUVs and the new Swift, and then starting in the second half of 2025, we’ll begin a period of EV growth.”

Previously, Suzuki showcased the eVX concept model almost the same size as the Grand Vitara SUV.

Electric power specifics were not disclosed, except for a 60 kWh battery capacity that allows a range of up to 550 km on a full charge.

Are you ready to welcome Suzuki’s EV offerings in the future?

Honda, Mitsubishi form ALTNA company to assist in more efficient EV battery management

A few weeks ago, Honda Motor Company and Mitsubishi Corporation announced the establishment of a new 50:50 joint venture company named ALTNA in Japan.

The primary goal of this new company is to help optimize the costs of electric vehicle (EV) usage, enhance battery life value, and circulation of resources in Japan, as well as to support the increasing demand for energy through the use of grid storage batteries.

ALTNA is set to introduce three main businesses in the future, namely EV battery leasing, battery recycling, and smart charging plans.

ALTNA will begin offering EV battery leasing plans through the Honda N-VAN e: model, where they will completely manage the leased battery ownership process and monitor usage levels throughout the lease period.

The data collected will be utilized for the purpose of improving reliability levels measured through various parameters.

Once these batteries reach the end of their lifecycle, they will be repurposed as grid storage batteries. ALTNA will also ensure that these batteries are recycled following correct procedures.

Through the smart charging business, ALTNA will offer plans that help users avoid peak charging times, thus reducing costs overall.

Furthermore, ALTNA’s charging plans will prioritize the use of renewable green energy for EV charging if there is surplus energy available on the power grid.

Renault Grand Koleos debuts in South Korea as the twin of Geely Xingyue L

Renault has announced their first collaboration with Geely through the introduction of the latest hybrid SUV model Grand Koleos, at the Busan Motor Show in South Korea.

There is no direct relation to the existing Koleos; the 2025 Grand Koleos is a rebranded SUV model based on the Geely Xingyue L.

It is not just a mere rebranding process, as Renault has given a distinct identity to this Grand Koleos model.

For instance, it features a more futuristic grille design, revamped LED headlight graphics, more angular quarter window design, along with minor changes to the bumpers and tailgate.

The Renault Grand Koleos measures 4,780 mm in length with a wheelbase stretching up to 2,820 mm, the longest in its class.

Moreover, the five-seater layout allows the Grand Koleos to offer a cargo capacity of 633 liters.

Renault also showcased the premium Esprit Alpine variant featuring blue accents, Alpine badges, 20-inch alloy wheels, complemented by a dark-themed cabin with Alcantara finishes and blue stitching.

All variants come with a setup of three 12.3-inch screens encompassing almost the entire dashboard dimensions.

Sharing the same CMA platform with Volvo XC40 and some Geely and Lynk & Co models, the Renault Grand Koleos also offers similar engine options.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model comes with a 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with two electric motors and a DHT transmission, producing a total output of 245 hp.

There is also a 2.0-liter turbo engine option with a power of up to 208 hp paired with a seven-speed DCT transmission.

The Renault Grand Koleos will go on sale in the Korean market starting this fall.

Toyota GR Supra 2.0 is officially dead

Unable to enjoy its second anniversary, the sales of the Toyota GR Supra sports car with a four-cylinder inline 2.0-liter engine for the United States market have been terminated this month.

In a press release, Toyota USA confirmed that the 2025 GR Supra model will only be available with a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six cylinder engine producing 382 hp and 499 Nm of torque.

Fortunately, buyers can still acquire the GR Supra 2025 with a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.

Toyota introduced the GR Supra with a 2.0-liter turbocharged heart (255 hp/400 Nm) in 2022 as a more affordable option, but this move was seen as not aiding in improving the already sluggish sales performance.

Throughout 2023, Toyota only managed to sell a total of 2,652 units of the GR Supra (manual and automatic models combined).

Returning to the GR Supra 2025, Toyota offers nearly identical features to the 2024 model, such as leather/Alcantara-trimmed sports seats or the option of grey leather, an 8.8-inch touch screen, wireless device charging, and a 500-watt JBL audio system with 12 speakers.

All models come equipped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, TRAC grip control, Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Warning, Vehicle Stability Control, Automatic High Beams, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and traditional Cruise Control.

The automatic transmission model also includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) function.

The selling price has increased from US$56,495 (RM266,487) last year to US$57,345 (RM270,496), while the 3.0 Premium model now priced at $60,495 (RM285,355).

Based on a brief internet search, the Toyota GR Supra 2.0-liter is still available in the Japanese market, but only with an automatic transmission.

Those desiring a manual gearbox must opt for the inline-six cylinder version of the GR Supra.
