GWM Malaysia recorded 331% year-on-year sales growth in 2024

Great Wall Motor (GWM) Malaysia has announced that it achieved an impressive year-on-year growth of 331% in 2024.

According to the company, the milestone highlights the growing trust and confidence Malaysian consumers place in GWM’s innovative, high-quality vehicles.

Malaysia’s sales have also played a vital role in contributing to GWM’s overall global success.

The growth in GWM Malaysia’s sales underscores the increasing demand for top-performing vehicles tailored to local preferences.

Last year, the company introduced three new models, namely the Ora 07 electric coupe, the Tank 300 off-road SUV and the Haval H6 HEV hybrid SUV, which garnered 1,500 bookings within the first of its launch.

On a global scale, GWM achieved exceptional milestones in 2024 with 1.23 million vehicles sold in total,  contributing to a cumulative sales record of 14.9 million units.

In the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, the company delivered 321,795 units, representing a year-on-year growth of 22.82%, while overseas sales saw an increase of 43.93% to 453,141 units.

With a strong foundation built on its 2024 success, GWM Malaysia is set to introduce more models in 2025. The company also aims to build deeper connections with its customers and strengthening its after-sales support.

As the new year begins and with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, GWM Malaysia has launched the “Drive Into Prosperity” promotion, which offers exclusive rewards including 10,000 km of free travel mileage with every purchase of the Haval H6 HEV.

5 telltale signs your suspension is failing

Unlike the engine and transmission, the suspension system is one of the components often overlooked by drivers. We’re just taking a guess here but it could be because it does not require maintenance as frequently as the engine and, depending on usage, rarely causes major issues.

However, it is important to remember that, like other components, the suspension can also suffer from damage that can incur high repair costs if you do not give it the proper attention it deserves.

To help you avoid thinning your wallet at the workshop, here are five signs that your suspension system may be experiencing problems:

Car pulls to the left or right when driven

In addition to suspension issues, this symptom can also occur if the tyres are under-inflated or misaligned. However, if your tyres are in good condition and you have recently had an alignment, then it is very likely due to a faulty suspension. Don’t delay—take your car to the workshop straight away.

Car bounces or dips excessively

Essentially, the suspension is designed to absorb shocks from uneven road surfaces. If your car bounces excessively over bumps or dips markedly at the front when braking, this indicates that the suspension system is compromised and no longer performing its function adequately.

Wobbly steering

The suspension system and steering system are closely related. If your steering wheel shakes while driving on a flat road or feels loose when turning, this indicates a problem with the suspension system.

Car leans to one side when parked

Some of you, especially those who grew up in the 90s and 00s, might remember that one funny scene in the used car lot in the film Senario Lagi. Quite simply, that’s what happens when one of your shock absorbers or springs is faulty. This is usually accompanied by a squeaking noise.

Uneven tyre wear

When one of your shock absorbers or springs is damaged, the vehicle’s weight can no longer be distributed evenly, causing one of the tyres to bear excessive weight. As a result, that tyre will wear out more quickly than the others. If this situation is left unaddressed, not only will you need to replace the suspension, but you will also have to fork out more on new tyres.

Honda City costs about RM4,295 to service over 100,000 km/5 years of ownership

It is perhaps unnecessary to reiterate that the Honda City is one of the most popular B-segment sedans in the market for non-local manufacturers.

The facelifted version launched in August 2023 saw the addition of a petrol RS variant positioned between the e:HEV RS and the V. Overall, there are five variants to choose from, with prices ranging from RM84,900 to RM111,900.

For those interested in buying the City, here are the maintenance costs for the petrol variants up to 100,000 km:

10,000 km, 50,000 km & 70,000 km

Good news for fans of the City: the first service is required only when the odometer reaches 10,000 km or within the first six months of ownership. The service involves an engine oil change and a drain plug washer (RM139.56) and a check of the front and rear brakes (RM10.17). Including labour costs (RM112.50) and service tax (RM9.00), customers will need to pay RM271.23.

20,000 km

At 20,000 km, in addition to the engine oil and drain plug washer (RM139.56) and brake checks (RM10.17), Honda Malaysia will also replace the oil filter (RM34.68). With labour costs (RM135) and service tax (RM10.80) included, the total cost this time comes to RM330.21.

30,000 km & 90,000 km

At this interval, Honda Malaysia will add the air cleaner element (RM93.60) and dust filter (RM234.06) to the list of items that need replacing, in addition to the engine oil, drain plug washer, and brake checks. No labour costs or service tax apply this time around, so the total amount due is RM477.39.

40,000 km & 80,000 km

In addition to the engine oil, drain plug washer, oil filter, and brake checks, customers will also need to replace the transmission fluid (RM189.38). The labour and service tax for this service come to RM150 and RM12, respectively, bringing the total to RM535.79.

60,000 km

For 60,000 km or three years of ownership, there are five items to be replaced: engine oil and drain plug washer, oil filter, air cleaner element, dust filter, and brake fluid (RM41.21). Both the labour cost and service tax are waived, meaning owners only need to pay for the parts, totaling RM553.28.

100,000 km

When the odometer hits the significant 100,000 km mark, owners only need to replace three items: engine oil and drain plug washer, oil filter, and iridium spark plugs (RM387.67). No labour or service tax is charged, resulting in a total cost of RM572.08.

Conclusion

The total cost for periodic servicing of the petrol Honda City amounts to RM4,295.62 for 100,000 km/five years of ownership. This averages out to RM859.12 per year or RM71.59 per month for servicing.

This calculation is important because, in addition to instalment payments, customers should also consider service costs and other expenses such as fuel, insurance, and tolls before making a decision.

There are no changes under the bonnet. The petrol variants—E, V, and RS—are still powered by a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo engine that produces 182 PS and 240 Nm, transmitted to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.

The Civic e:HEV RS retains its hybrid powertrain, which consists of a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle engine with 143 PS/184 Nm, and an electric motor that generates 184 PS and 315 Nm.

In addition to the Econ, Normal, and Sport driving modes, the hybrid variant now features a new Individual mode.

JPJ officers to be equipped with bodycams for transperancy

The Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke has announced that the use of bodycams for Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel will be introduced to enhance the transparency of enforcement.

Loke stated that equipping JPJ officers with bodycams in the field would improve their effectiveness, particularly concerning heavy vehicles.

He added that the Director-General of JPJ, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, had previously requested that the department’s personnel be equipped with body cameras to ensure that the image, safety, and integrity of officers on duty are maintained at the highest level.

“… the use body cameras not only protects the image and integrity of JPJ but also safeguards the officers themselves.

“As I have mentioned before, sometimes our officers face criticism, humiliation, and various accusations. With the body camera, JPJ officers are protected, as any evidence during their enforcement actions can be captured,” he said.

Previously, JPJ Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations) Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi was reported stating that the use of body cameras for enforcement officers is essential to enhance integrity among officers and improve public trust.

He pointed out that the cameras would also prevent common misunderstandings that often arise during enforcement.

“(Discussions are underway) to secure immediate funding for the procurement, and I hope that JPJ officers will be equipped with the body cameras within this year,” he stated.

Peugeot 408: Why the Premium variant is better than the GT

The Peugeot 408 was launched in the Malaysian market in April last year with three variants to choose from, namely Allure, Premium, and GT, priced at RM146,055, RM166,055, and RM196,055 respectively.

All three variants are powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged PureTech four-cylinder engine that produces 218 PS and 300 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels.

Of course, the key difference between these three variants lies in their equipment levels. In this article, we will compare between the Premium and GT variants, and why this writer thinks the Premium is a better proposition than the GT.

It is more affordable

No matter how you slice it, RM196,055 for a C-segment car is quite unreasonable. In this context, the Premium variant appears to be a smarter and more sensible investment.

Indeed, with the GT variant, you receive an array of additional features such as Matrix LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather upholstery, massage and memory functions for the driver’s seat, a 10-speaker Focal audio system, and more. However, in my opinion, the equipment included with the Premium is sufficient to meet the needs of buyers in this segment.

It is cheaper to maintain

All 408 variants are powered by the same engine; however, by choosing the Premium variant, you may save your bank account in the future, as it comes with 18-inch wheels instead of the 20-inch ones found on the GT.

Of course, tyres do not need to be replaced every year, but the price difference between 18-inch and 20-inch tyres can be quite significant, which can be seen as a worthwhile saving in the long run. Plus, the Premium wheels look so much better than the GT’s.

It is more practical

Another advantage of the Premium variant over the GT is its boot capacity, which can be expanded from 536 litres to 1,611 litres (compared to 1,583 litres in the GT), given that it does not include a subwoofer.

Additionally, it also comes with a space-saver spare tyre instead of the tyre repair kit that is included with the GT.

Now you can see that the highest variant does not necessarily mean it is the best choice. However, ultimately, the decision is yours.

How to extend the lifespan of your car wipers

Modern vehicles are fortified with an array of active and passive safety systems designed to ensure the well-being of drivers and other road users alike.

Among these myriad safety features, there is one indispensable element that practically allows you to get behind the wheel on rainy days – the windscreen wiper.

Believe it or not, wipers are a crucial safety system in your vehicle. Therefore, maintaining this component is essential for your safety as well as that of others on the road.

So without further ado, here are several tips to extend the lifespan of your car wipers:

Avoid wiping a dry windscreen

Essentially, wipers are designed to clear away water or moisture from your windscreen. Using them on a dry screen can inflict damage, as any dirt present on the surface can wear down the rubber blades and potentially scratch your windscreen.

Keep your windscreen clean

As previously mentioned, any grime on your windscreen can cause damage not only to the wipers but to the glass itself. To prevent this, regularly wipe your windscreen using a microfiber cloth along with an appropriate cleaning solution to remove any dirt.

Clean the wiper blades

In addition to your windscreen, it’s important to keep the wiper blades clean to ensure optimal performance. The best method involves washing the blades with a mixture of warm water and soap (or a washer fluid), followed by rinsing them with clean water.

Always refill the washer fluid

As its name suggests, washer fluid or screenwash fluid is specially formulated to clean the windscreen from all sorts of dust, grime, and even droppings. It contains specific chemicals that help break down stubborn dirt much more effectively than plain water.

Park in the Shade

Prolonged exposure to heat can cause the rubber blades to deteriorate more quickly. If a shaded area isn’t available, ensure you lift the wipers away from the windscreen to prevent them from melting against the hot glass.

Here’s what you need to know about blind spots

What is a blind spot?

When driving on the road, you should be able to see clearly in front of, beside, and behind your vehicle.

However, did you know that there are certain areas around your vehicle that are hidden from your field of vision and cannot be seen through your mirrors? These areas are known as blind spots.

Where are the blind spots?

Every vehicle has blind spots, but their size varies depending on the type of vehicle. Larger vehicles such as lorries, vans, and buses typically have larger blind spots compared to smaller vehicles like saloons and hatchbacks.

Generally, blind spots are located behind the wing mirrors and adjacent to the front and rear doors of the vehicle.

Why are blind spots dangerous?

As the name suggests, blind spots prevent you from seeing other vehicles and road users. This can be extremely dangerous and increases the risk of accidents, especially if you change lanes without checking your blind spots first.

How can you avoid blind spots?

Essentially, you cannot eliminate blind spots unless you are an alien with an extra pair of eyes at the back of your head.

In other words, blind spots will always exist, but as a driver, you can reduce them by following these steps:

1. Ensure that your rear-view and wing mirrors are adjusted accordingly

When adjusting your mirrors, make sure you are sitting normally in the driver’s seat. The rear-view mirror should give you a full view of the rear, while the wing mirrors should show a small portion of the sides of your vehicle.

2. Use the SMOG technique when changing lanes.

S for signal – use your indicators when changing lanes.
M for mirrors – check your wing mirrors and rear-view mirror.
O for over your shoulder – look over your shoulder.
G for go – change lanes if it is safe to do so.

3. Consider aftermarket accessories

You can obtain blind spot mirrors (usually small and round in shape) to attach to your wing mirrors. If you have extra bucks to spend, you might also consider an aftermarket blind spot monitoring system if your car doesn’t already have this feature.

Govt to commence trial of QR code immigration clearance at KLIA

A trial of a QR code system specifically for Malaysian citizens will commence this month, aimed at streamlining the immigration clearance process at 40 dedicated lanes in Terminal 1 and 2 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the use of QR codes in the arrival and departure areas of T1 and T2 is a solution to the congestion issues frequently experienced at the country’s entry points particularly during peak times and festive seasons.

One of the advantages of using a QR code is reduced duration of immigration clearance, which will take between five to seven seconds compared to 15 to 25 seconds when using conventional automatic gates.

In addition, the QR code system can enhance security and service efficiency through the use of cutting-edge technology while also minimising leakages.

“Through this QR code system, travellers no longer need to take their passports out to clear immigration. However, they are still required to bring their passports with them on their travels,” he said.

Saifuddin noted that while immigration clearance will now be conducted using QR codes, manual counters and conventional automatic gate systems will remain available.

Last December, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, was reported to have said that the government was considering a new QR code-based system to expedite the inspection process at immigration counters, particularly at KLIA, as part of efforts to reduce congestion.

This system will allow travellers to scan a QR code containing their personal information and travel details.
