2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES launched – RM119,338

LAUNCHED alongside the new Honda CBR250RR is the 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES, also fondly known as Africa Twin.

For the latest model, the torque generated by the 1084 cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine is now increased by 7% to 112 Nm at 5,500 rpm, while power remains at 100.5 hp (75 kW) at 7,500 rpm.

In addition to higher torque output, the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) has also been reworked to give a much more natural, ‘feathered’ clutch feel on initial take-off and between first and second gears.

In Manual Transmission (MT) mode, there are three modes of operation that give allow the rider to shift with the handlebar trigger control buttons. The Automatic D mode is ideal for city and highway riding, while Automatic S offers three levels of sportier riding.

There’s also a G switch that is accessible via the TFT touch screen display. It reduces the amount of clutch slip during gear changes to improve the feel for available tracion and machine control.

Other features include Throttle-by-Wire (TBW) and a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The latter has been improved, offering four levels of power and three levels of engine braking.

Additionally, the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) provides seven levels of intervention to give riders a finer choice in controlling rear tyre slide, particularly useful for off-road riding. This can be completely turned off for riders who prefer full manual control.

The Africa Twin is also fitted with ABS and Wheelie Control with three levels of input, and four riding modes, namely Tour, Urban, Gravel and Off-Road.

Additionally, there are two customisable User settings, allowing riders to tailor the bike’s performance to their specific needs and preferences.

The Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (Showa EERA) suspension, which was an option for the previous model, is now equipped as a standard feature.

It offers four suspension modes (Mid, Hard, Soft, Off-Road) and a User mode, ensuring optimal performance whether riding solo, with a passenger, with luggage, or off-road.

The Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES also comes with a new front fairing, aggressively redesigned to improve upper body wind deflection and aerodynamics. It also gets a larger 19-inch front wheel that significantly improves the bike’s stability during on-road riding.

Elsewhere, the new seat uses a 15 mm thicker urethane foam cushion with optimised density and has a 8% larger area along with adjustable seat height, which can be set between 820 mm and 840 mm without the need for tools.

Available in Mat Ballistic Black Metallic and Pearl Glare White, the new CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES comes with a price tag of RM119,338.

2024 Honda CBR250RR is more powerful, more aerodynamic

BOON Siew Honda has launched an upgraded version of the Honda CBR250RR, which comes with a slightly more powerful engine and new styling.

For the 2024 model year, the 250 cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC parallel-twin engine now delivers a maximum output of 42 PS (31 kW) at 13,000 rpm and 25 Nm of torque at 11,000 rpm, marking a (1.36 PS) 1 kW increase over the previous model.

The power hike is made possible reducing the combustion chamber volume from 7.55 to 7.00 cm3, which in turn alters the compression ratio from 12.1 to 12.5.

Additionally, the inlet port throat diameter has been enlarged from 21.4 to 21.6 mm to increase intake capacity, while optimised piston and oil ring tensions reduce friction.

Another major upgrade to the CBR250RR is the Showa Separate Function Fork – Big Piston (SFF-BP) inverted front suspension that stabilizes the damping force and allows more freedom of load shifting during sports riding.

Meanwhile, existing features such as the Assist & Slipper clutch, dual-channel ABS, and Throttle-by-Wire system with Sport, Sport+ and Comfort modes are retained.

Styling-wise, the new CBR250RR embodies the ‘aggressive speedy shape’ concept, featuring a forward-leaning posture, sharp edges, and a dense body structure that echoes larger motorcycles.

This has been enhanced with optimised cowl geometries and advanced aerodynamics that reduce air resistance by 6%.

There are two new colours to choose from, namely Mat Zodiac Blue Metallic and Honda Tricolor. Pricing starts at RM27,999 excluding road tax, insurance, and registration.

Boon Siew Honda offers a two-year or 20,000-km manufacturing warranty, whichever comes first.

We’ll keep making V12 engines until they’re banned – Ferrari

DESPITE the fact that Ferrari has started offering smaller turbocharged hybrid V6 and V8 engines in its cars, the famed manufacturer is determined to keep its V12 engines alive for as long as possible.

Speaking to Car Expert, Ferrari’s head of product marketing Emanuele Carando assured enthusiasts that the company will continue to produce cars with the 6.5-litre engine for as long as the regulations allow them to.

“We will produce naturally aspirated V-12s until the law [no longer] allows us to. We hope the law in the future will continue to show opportunities, probably working on new petrol which is more sustainable,” said Carando.

In the 12Cilindri Coupe and Spider, the Ferrari 6.5-litre V12 engine can rev up to only 9,500 rpm, but technically it is capable of reaching 10,000 rpm.

Ruggero Cevolani, the head of the V12 program, explained that the lower rev limit was deliberately chosen to maximise power delivery and avoid “drop off in the sensation of constant acceleration.”

He further added that Ferrari is first and foremost an “engineering company,” and that’s why performance is a top priority.

Previously, Ferrari’s chief designer, Flavio Manzoni, acknowledged that the V8 turbo engine outperforms the V12 in terms of performance. Not only that, he also stated that the 12-cylinder engine is not the most efficient.

However, the company will continue to fight for the engine to ensure that it lives on for as long as possible, as it is more emotional than smaller engines.

Ferrari is not the only luxury brand still interested in producing V12 engines. Aston Martin also has a similar direction with the upcoming Vanquish model, which is said to have a more powerful twin-turbo V12 engine.

Toyota Hilux FCEV enters testing and demonstration phase

The Toyota Hilux hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) development project, which was first announced in December 2022, has now entered its final phase.

According to Toyota, 10 Hilux FCEV prototypes have been built at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) plant in Derby, England.

Five vehicles are undergoing rigorous field testing to assess safety, performance, functionality, and durability, generating test drive data in real-world situations, while the other five are engaged in customer and media demonstrations, including at the forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024.

Externally, the fuel cell model has the same dimensions and rugged appearance as the latest Hilux generation but beneath the surface, there’s a ‘heart’ derived from the Mirai that offers a range of up to 600 km – further than might be achieved using a battery electric system.

And thanks to hydrogen’s light weight, the Hilux FCEV is said to have higher payload capacity and towing capability compared to other zero-emission alternatives

Hydrogen is stored in three high-pressure fuel tanks, each containing 2.6kg to give a total capacity of 7.8kg. The tanks are mounted within the vehicle’s ladder frame chassis.

At the front axle, there is polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack comprising 330 cells producing 174 PS, while mounted on the rear axle an electric motor generating 182 PS and 300 Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, the lithium-ion battery, which stores the electricity generated by the fuel cells, is located in the rear load deck, above the hydrogen tanks. This avoids any loss of cabin space.

Hydrogen fuel cell is one of the powertrains developed by Toyota as part of its previously announced multi-pathway strategy.

The company expects Europe to be one of the world’s largest hydrogen fuel markets by 2030. As a result, in December 2023, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) announced the Hydrogen Factory Europe to help accelerate the commercialization of the technology.

9 brands given green light to test Level 3 autonomous driving in China

CHINA has reportedly granted permission to nine vehicle manufacturers to test Level 3 autonomous driving systems on public roads.

This move comes about eight months after the Chinese government issued guidelines and began accepting applications from companies interested in testing their autonomous driving technology.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has confirmed that approvals have been granted to Nio, BYD, Changan Auto, GAC, SAIC, BAIC BluePark, China FAW Group, SAIC Hongyan, and Yutong Bus.

These companies will be allowed to test autonomous vehicles on limited roads, with drivers permitted to release their hands from the steering wheel.

Level 3 semi-autonomous vehicles are not yet being sold in the Chinese market, but this testing will pave the way for such systems to be launched for individual buyers and fleet operators.

According to Reuters, at least 10 car manufacturers in China are offering vehicles with Level 2 autonomous driving systems, including Huawei and Xpeng.

The testing program will be supervised by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Ministry of Public Security.

The new legislation also allows Tesla to start offering its semi-autonomous driving system in the country.

Previously, Elon Musk hinted that the brand might launch a robotaxi equipped with Full Self-Driving technology before introducing it to privately-owned cars. Chinese representatives were reportedly open to this idea.

However, before this can happen, Tesla needs approval to collect and transfer the necessary data for its autonomous system.

The Model 3 and Model Y are now permitted to enter specific areas in China after previously being restricted due to data safety concerns. This permission was granted after a leading Chinese automotive association confirmed that Tesla complies with data safety regulations.

Mazda admits to using ‘external device’, modified engine sofware on vehicle testing

Following the safety test scandal of Daihatsu, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan has initiated an investigation into other domestic manufacturers.

In an official statement, Mazda stated it had conducted an investigation into all of its 2,403 tests for applications for Type Designation tests performed between January 2014 and January 2024. The investigation results confirmed irregularities in a total of five tests in two test categories.

The irregularities, which were reported to MLIT on May 30, involve 150,878 manufactured vehicles, out of which 149,313 were sold in the domestic market.

According to Mazda, they had used an “external device” in the frontal collision test for the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3, respectively known as Atenza and Axela in Japan.

The devise was used to trigger a timed activation of the airbag instead of spontaneous activation based on collision detection by an onboard sensor.

Even though these models are no longer being produced, Mazda said it has conducted in-house technical verification as well as re-tests, and confirmed that these models have the performance that meets the legal standards for occupant protection performance in the event of a frontal collision.

Additionally, Mazda admitted to using a different engine control software in the petrol engine output test for the MX-5 RF and Mazda 2.

“The test should have been performed using engine control software in the same condition as a mass-production vehicle, but it was conducted by using control software in which the ignition timing adjust function was partially deactivated,” the manufacturer said.

In light of the result, Mazda stated that they will rewrite the engine control software and conduct the tests again under the same conditions as those for mass-production vehicles.

The company assured that the affected units are still safe to drive but have temporarily suspended their sales since May 30.

Volkswagen once stuffed a VR6 engine into a Mk6 Golf

In the span of eight generations, the Volkswagen Golf has brought forth countless special edition models. One of the highly coveted models is a sixth-generation Golf powered by the VR6 engine.

However, due to unknown reasons, the car never saw the light of day. Had it been made available to buyers, it still would have been the most powerful Golf model in the market.

According to Enrico Beltz, Chief of Content, Classic Communication & Media Relations, the VR6-powered was built as a one-off model in 2009, before the release of Golf R Mk6.

The 3.2-litre engine fitted into said Golf was essentially the same engine found in the Golf R32 but that particular unit was tuned and built by Rothe Motorsport.

While the original naturally-aspirated version had only 247 hp, the reworked engine made a whopping 463 hp and 520 Nm of torque.

The upgrades made include a Garret GT35 turbocharger, custom pistons, a new intake manifold, new injectors, aluminum pressure pipes, and Rothe Motorsport exhaust valves, to name a few.

VW also fitted brakes from an Audi RS6, 19-inch wheels from Lamborghini, and Bilstein B16 suspension system. The interior was reupholstered with Alcantara and leather wrapping on the dashboard.

The performance figures were never disclosed, but with a dual-clutch seven-speed transmission, all-wheel drive system, and a weight of around 1,360 kg, it would have been able to keep up with any modern supercar. VW claims it is capable of achieving speeds exceeding 250 km/h.

Golf GTI W12-650

Interestingly, this was not the last Golf to be equipped with the VR6 engine. In 2013, the German manufacturer introduced the Golf Design Vision GTI concept car with over 500 hp. Two years later, the Golf GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo emerged with 503 hp on tap.

If you think the VR6 is the largest engine ever crammed into the Golf, you are mistaken. 17 years ago, VW did the unthinkable by stuffing a 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine from the Bentley Continental GT into a Golf Mk5-based concept car.

Known as the Golf GTI W12-650, the car had 641 hp, front brakes from an Audi RS4, and rear axle and brakes from a Lamborghini Gallardo.

The Subaru WRX tS isn’t exactly an STI but…

SUBARU has expanded its WRX model lineup in the United States with a new variant known as the WRX tS or Tuned by STI.

The WRX tS is not a full blown STI but it does come with several tasty upgrades. Visually, it comes with side mirrors, a fin-type antenna, and a rear spoiler painted in black, while the brake calipers are gold in colour.

Additionally, there’s a tS logo on the rear deck lid, and the model is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels in Satin Gray shod with 245/35 Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres.

Moving to the interior, the conventional gauges have been replaced with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, which means that the driver no longer needs to rely on the 11.6-inch touchscreen to view the map.

The WRX tS comes with Recaro Performance Design seats wrapped in black Ultrasuede with blue accents, as well as the WRX tS logo on the head rests and floor mats.

To make things more interesting, Subaru has removed the power moonroof to reduce weight and provide more headroom for helmeted drivers.

For the tS variant, the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine remains untouched, meaning it still makes 271 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, routed via the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and Active Torque Vectoring.

While the engine’s output is retained, the vehicle is gains electronically controlled dampers and a revised suspension system by STI. Drivers can tailor the damper’s dynamic performance through three modes, namely Comfort, Normal, and Sport.

Braking performance is enhanced through a high-performance Brembo braking system, including 6-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers, as well as larger pads and rotors.

Lamborghini Urus SE now in Malaysia, RM1.028 million before taxes and options

LESS than two months after making its debut at Auto Shanghai 2024, the Lamborghini Urus SE has now been launched in Malaysia at a price of RM1,028,000 before taxes, duties and customisations.

The Urus SE is not a special edition model as some may have thought, but rather a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model based on the Urus S.

It features a new design, optimised aerodynamics, and a new hybrid powertrain that not only offers the highest output in its lineup but also reduces emissions by up to 80%.

Powering the Urus SE is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 620 PS and 800 Nm, paired with an electric motor on the rear axle generating 192 PS and 483 Nm. When combined, the powertrain generates total of 800 PS and 950 Nm.

With an 8-speed automatic transmission, it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.1 seconds faster than the Urus S) and achieve a maximum speed of 312 km/h (7 km/h faster than the Urus S).

Six existing driving modes from the Urus S (Strada, Sport, Corsa, Neve, Sabbia, and Terra) are now accompanied by four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS) modes: EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge.

In EV Drive, a 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery located under the floor and above the rear differential provides a driving range of over 60 km and a maximum speed of 135 km/h.

Depending on the driving mode selected, the vehicle’s air springs adjust for ground clearance, with travel ranging from 15 mm in Corsa up to 75 mm when the lifting system is activated.

Styling-wise, the Urus SE sports a new bonnet with a floating design, as well as newly designed matrix LED headlights, bumper, front grille, taillights and diffuser. The addition of a new spoiler increases the rear downforce by 35%, while new under-body air vents and revamped air ducts improve air cooling by 30%.

The cabin has also been updated, now featuring a larger 12.3-inch screen, as well as new seats and dashboard. The mechanical pushbutton panel gives a more tactile feel.

Needless to say, Lamborghini offers a wide range of customisation options. For instance, there are three dedicated P Zeros tyre, from 21 to 23 inches, to meet customers’ different requirements for comfort and sportiness.

Customers can also choose from over 100 exterior colours (including two new colours, Arancio Egon and Bianco Sapphirus), as well as 47 colour combinations and four types of embroidery for the interior.

Proton introduces 5-star after sales rating initiative

PROTON has announced the commencement of a 5-Star Rating initiative to further raise the level of after sales service for customers at its outlets nationwide.

The new initiative recognises Proton dealers who have achieved an outstanding level of after sales service and is an extension of the Proton Operational Excellence (POE) initiative that was begun on March 6, 2024.

The new rating is awarded to dealers based on their POE score and Service Quality, encouraging all outlets to achieve and maintain a high level of customer service and satisfaction.

Service Quality is evaluated in two categories, namely Speed and Compliance, and these are then measured over six focus areas. The end goal is for outlets to manage customers concerns effectively and to deliver the best customer experience.

Proton’s POE initiative emphasizes adherence to a thorough list of requirements such as service process, technician competency, stock inventory and customer management.

“It was launched with the primary aim of enhancing the business performance of outlets and improving the operations efficiency of service centres nationwide,” the company says in a statement.

Each outlet is assessed on a monthly basis and the results shared with all dealers to clearly indicate where they stand within the network.

The automaker’s After Sales Division works closely with the outlets to proactively raise their service levels and scores with quarterly roadshows also held to give recognition to top achievers as well as reinforce standards by the sharing of best practices.

With the beginning of the 5-Star Rating initiative, five dealerships will be awarded the top accolade every month, marking them out as centres of excellence for after sales and customer service.

To ensure parity and buy-in from its network, KPI’s for the initiative are set based on feedback from all outlets as well as after benchmarking of best practices from other OEMs.

To mark the commencement of the 5-Star initiative, a launch event was held at Melinau Auto in Kuching, one of the top three Proton outlets to be recognised for meeting all the requirements to earn the new accolade.

Following the launch the 5-Star Initiative, the list of outlets to obtain the ranking will be published on Proton’s corporate website, www.proton.com, accompanied by a distinctive badge for dealership recognition.
